Red Hat Chit Chat The Lakeshore Red Hatters meet the 2nd Friday of the month at 1:30pm at the Manitowoc Senior Center. Monthly tea will be November 9th, 2012. Hostesses are Sharon Bruckshen, Ann Smaglik, Lee Alsteen and Gloria Mankins. DOROTHY BLASCZYK WILL BE COLLECTING OUR $17.50 FOR THE CHRISTMAS PARTY. We will be having our FALL RUMMAGE SALE. ANY ITEMS, not just red and purple. Our kitty needs an infusion! Shirley Oswald and Mary Ann Preston volunteered to set up. Our hostesses for our Halloween Party were Barb Zipperer, Shirley Oswald and Charlotte Sobel. They had Mike Maher, Executive Director of the Manitowoc County Historical Society as he portrayed Thomas Olson Helle, a Norwegian farmer from Valders. He used many props and people from the audience to tell a story about ancestors coming to our country. He was so much fun and taught us a lot of history. Great job Mike and thanks to the ladies for having him. We collected $43.50 for a donation to the historical society. We sang happy birthday to Joy Krejcarek, Audrey Behnke, Terry Prigge, Evie Schneider and Kathleen Welch. They served a nice lunch of a variety of cheese and crackers, sausage, cupcakes and bars and coffee and tea. Our costume winners were Mary Ann Brueninger, Bonnie Willems, Marilyn Neumeyer, Berdeva Fischer and Denise Beyer with the most clever costume: SUB-DE-TOOT REFEREE. The paper hat winners were Terry Prigge, Irene Kotarek, Marilyn Neumeyer and Charlotte Sobel. We would all like to welcome new member Joan Maltby, friend of Diane Cisler. Our November luncheon out will be on Wednesday, November 14th at 4 Seasons. Eat at Noon. Please remember if you sign up to go to a luncheon and then are unable to attend, let the hostess know so they can give a more accurate count to the restaurant. Our Christmas Party will be at the Lighthouse Inn on December 14th. Meet at 11:00am and eat at Noon. We voted to have chicken and ham with grasshopper torte for dessert at a cost of $17.50 for meal, tax and tip. It will be on the main floor so NO STEPS. The entertainment will be Erich Adam, son-in-law of Donna Durben from Waukesha. He plays keyboard and accordion, sings and tells jokes. We will pay for this entertainment out of the treasury. I heard he is Great! The Red Hat Singers are in full swing again and always looking for new voices! We practice on various Wednesdays and perform usually the 3rd Wednesday. We performed at Harmony West in Manitowoc, October 24th. We will perform at River Wood Estates in Manitowoc on November 28th at 2:00pm. Anyone is always welcome to join us at our performances to see our show!

“Why is my

balance getting worse, and why am I falling?”

As many as 28 % - 45 % of Seniors fall each year. Though our

balance will decline as we age, balance activities, elderly balance training and balance exercises can limit the loss or actually improve our performance. A fitness program which incorporates strength, endurance and balance training is essential in main-taining and promoting good balance.

Join Dr. Heimerl with Advanced Family Chiropractic when he answers that question and discusses the facts. Ask what you can do to prevent a fall.

Open to the Public.

You are invited to join Kevin Hoffman,

Firefighter/Paramedic from the Manitowoc Fire Department as he

discusses Fire Safety and Prevention in your home.

Topics include: Planning a Home Fire Escape Plan, Common Fire Risk in your home, the use and operation of Smoke Detectors, Carbon Monoxide Detectors

and Fire Extinguishers.

Question & Answer session to follow.

Open to the Public. Please bring your family members!

Join John Johnson of J. Johnson & Associates at 1:00pm on Thur. Nov. 15th for a discussion & presentation on Legacy Planning. This concept can also benefit your concerns regarding Long Term Care or Home Care needs. This is not a presentation on Long Term Care, but it could enhance your existing benefits and estate.

Please call 686-3060 to reserve your spot by November 13th.

If you are unable to attend and/or would like

further information, you may call Mr. Johnson at 683-3606.

Recipes of the Month 18

Ingredients: 2 C all purpose flour 1-1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 7/3 C butter, softened 1/2 C each packed brown and granulated sugars 1 C whole-milk ricotta cheese 1 egg 1 Tbsp finely shredded orange peel 1 Tbsp orange juice 1/2 tsp vanilla 1-1/2 C fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped 2 Tbsp finely chopped crystallized ginger 1 recipe Orange Glaze 1/2 C walnuts, toasted and chopped.

1. Preheat oven to 350 deg. Grease fifteen 2.5” muffin cups. IN a bowl, combine first four ingredients with 1/4 tsp salt. In a large bowl beat butter and sugars until fluffy. Beat in ricotta, egg, orange peel, orange juice and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture just until combined. Fold in cranberries and ginger.

2. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake 20-25min or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in pan 5min. Remove; cool slightly. Spoon on glaze. Sprinkle with nuts and additional orange peel if desired.

ORANGE GLAZE Combine 1 C powdered sugar, 1 Tbsp orange juice and 1/2 tsp vanilla. Stir in 2 Tbsp melted butter and 1/2 tsp shredded orange peel.

Make mini pies with Turkey Day leftovers and enjoy the whole feast a second time.

To assemble these tasty little morsels, press pie dough into muffin tins; bake in a 425 deg oven for 8-10 minutes until golden. Spoon whatever you please—stuffing, turkey, potatoes, corn—into the pie shells. Warm in a 350 deg oven for about 8 minutes.

How simple and de-licious!

(Don’t have pie crust?..use the stuffing as the shell. When it bakes, it will hold the shape of the muffin tin.)

Based on Nicholas Sparks' bestseller, The Lucky One, Zac Efron ("17 Again," "Charlie St. Cloud") stars alongside Taylor Schilling (TV's "Mercy") and Blythe Danner ("Meet the Parents" franchise) in this romantic drama directed by Academy Award®-nominated writer/director Scott Hicks ("Shine," "No Reservations").

U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan, Thibault (Efron,) returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keep-ing him alive—a photograph he found of a woman he doesn't even know. Learning her name is Beth (Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complica-tions in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.

Special Thanks to Homecare Health Services for providing treats

and refreshments during the movie.

OUR THANKSGIVING PRAYEROUR THANKSGIVING PRAYEROUR THANKSGIVING PRAYEROUR THANKSGIVING PRAYER Thanksgiving is a festive day

That brings our family near;

We love the food and fellowship -

Are grateful that we’re here!

For things we take for granted, Lord,

We bring our thanks to you;

For freedom we can still enjoy,

And rest when day is through!

And God, though sometimes we neglect

To take the time to pray;

We thank you that you’re always there

To love us, come what may!

There are no words that can convey

Our feelings deep inside;

For thru your words, our lives have changed,

And peace and love abide!

Thanksgiving is a special time

To thank you for all things;

But foremost, Lord, for your dear son,

And for the hope he brings!

Happy Thanksgiving! Elaine Kestly
