Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!! Do you remember this from when you were
younger or on the playground at school? Did you believe it then? Do you believe it now?
In the Bible, James 3 tells us no human being can tame the tongue and it is a restless evil, full of deadly
poison and we can’t praise God and start fires with the same tongue. But Proverbs 12:18 says:
The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
How do you use your tongue? Is it for praising God, taking your requests to Him, building up your sisters in
Christ or tearing down or raising suspicions among them? Are you a peacemaker or a trouble maker?
We often get caught in repeating what someone else has said—either overheard or said directly to you. Even
if what they said is true and you are just repeating facts, it can hurt or sever relationships. Check your motive
on repeating what you have heard. Very seldom can anything be gained by repeating someone else’s
conversation.
Even if your motive in sharing that bit of information is to protect that person to whom you are talking or let
them know what others are saying, what real purpose does it serve? It usually only makes the person you
are trying to “protect” insecure because others are talking about what is going on in their life and passing
judgment.
Be careful what you listen to and keep it to yourself. When you hear something about someone you know,
kindly speak up in their defense or walk away. Say something to offset their criticism or off handed remarks.
No need to be tacky or rude and no need to pass it on to the person they were talking about.
Don’t share gossip in the cover of a prayer request. Having a true prayer partner is wonderful and knowing
you can trust them is a gift beyond measure. Don’t abuse their trust!
Again, our Bible is a great source of advice and instruction. Proverbs 18:21 in the Message says it best I
think…Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.

“LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD”. Habakkuk 3:1
I listened in awe last Monday evening as my Monday Night Bible Study girls shared their summer experiences. They did a lot of the fun things all teenagers and college students do in the summer, but most inspiring were the accounts of their mission trips. These girls had traveled to Africa, France, Jordan, Latvia and Alabama, respectively. They were bursting to share what God had taught them and how they were challenged. What a faith boost! Missions seems to be my focus right now as Phil and I are preparing to send our only daughter where God has called her. She knew His call on her life when she was 10, but it was much easier preparing for this time then. She leaves with our blessings and prayers on August 30. Where has God called you? All calls aren't to foreign soil. Has He called you to some area of service at FBC? Are you being an obedient daughter? “So it's paramount that you keep the commandments of GOD, your God, walk down the roads He shows you and reverently respect Him."(Deut 8:6 MSG)

Do you have a wish list? I wish to do this, I hope to go there, I want to buy this and that, etc. There is nothing wrong with having a wish list; however, some of the items might be selfish desires. I wonder if God has individual wish lists for each of us? According to God’s word, there are certain things He wishes to see us accomplish. God’s wish list may look something like this: Receive the gift of salvation. John 3:16 Continuously seek Me in prayer. Ephesians 6:18 Meditate on my Word. Psalm 1 Mature in the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25 Seek first My kingdom and righteousness. Matthew 6:33 Use and share spiritual gifts. Roman 12:6-8 Before preparing your wish list, seek God’s insight. You might be surprised how different your list looks when you include Him.

No one can forget the aroma of home-made yeast rolls baking at church when Marvell
was the church cook. The memory still causes smiles and mouths to water for those
fortunate enough to have experienced her cooking. Marvell moved to Muskogee from
Arkansas after she graduated from high school in 1943. She began cooking at Camp
Gruber and also started her hobby of collecting patches. One patch on the uniform of
Bill Baroli caught her eye. When she asked Bill for the patch, he told her she would
have to pay for it and to meet him in the commissary Friday night. She met him, paid
80 cents for the patch, and they began dating. Marvell said, "I still have that patch
that brought us together, stuck in my Bible that kept us together." Marvell and Bill were married in
1944. They began attending First Baptist in 1947. Marvell loved working with the children's choirs, Sunday
school, training union and was "talked into being the church cook" by Allen Wilkerson. She loved going to
Falls Creek and cooking for the kids. Marvell and Bill had 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grand-
children! According to Marvell, her life was “plain”, but her children and her church made it exciting.
