Additionally, Caz spearheaded the creation of the 360 Progression™, a unique total sports experience that adapts and expands as players develop and grow in their personal athletic journey. The 360 Progression allows young athletes to hone their skills while developing strong character, confidence and faith. Caz and his team have designed Upward Sports to provide a place to play for every young athlete, regardless of skill level, from kindergarten through high school. “Upward Sports believes in providing our players with the best in coaching and competitive experience, enhanced with an intentional focus on creating men and women of character and strong moral fiber,” says Caz. “Our aspiration is for all Upward Sports athletes to play with purpose, growing mentally, athletically, spiritually and socially.” The goal in everything Caz does—personally and through Upward Sports—is to promote the discovery of Jesus. With more than 25 years of experience in ministry, Caz is adept at equipping leaders to cultivate a spiritual foundation in America’s youth, a theme he explores in his most recent book, Act or React: The Decision is Ours. Through Upward Sports, Caz has influenced more than 1 million leaders across the nation. Caz resides in Spartanburg, S.C., with his wife Leslie. A father to three daughters and two sons-in-law and a first-time grandfather, he is active in church and civic organizations in his community and has served on the boards of the South Carolina Christian Foundation and Hannah’s Hope, which supports families in crisis. In addition to Act or React, Caz is also the author of Every Child is a Winner.

CAZ MCCASLIN Founder & President

“Play with purpose.”

With a mission to equip leaders to promote the discovery of Jesus through sports, Caz McCaslin founded Upward Sports in 1995. Under Caz’s leadership, Upward Sports has grown from several hundred children playing in one church basketball league to the world’s largest Christian youth sports league, with more than half a million children playing in 5,000 programs (multisport clinics, camps, academies and leagues) with more than 2,000 church partners in 45 states. During the past 19 years, more than 5 million young athletes have been involved with Upward Sports.

After earning a degree in recreation and leisure studies from The University of Georgia, Caz became a church recreation director in Upstate South Carolina. There, he developed a basketball league that incorporated athletic skills for success on and off the court—including sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, effort and respect. Eventually, the number of children wanting to play outpaced the capacity of the local church gymnasium. Recognizing that his vision was to reach young athletes and their families beyond his local congregation through a first-class sports experience, Caz launched Upward Sports.

Caz’s passion for fostering the “total” athlete in youth, beginning with the skills he originally taught at the church, has inspired Upward Sports’ programming and development from its inception. Under his guidance, Upward Sports created a performance division in 2012, known as Upward Stars, to further develop athletic skills in young athletes through higher levels of competition.
