St Peter’s SchoolGrowing Success

St Peter’s Junior School is celebrating asuccessful year with a “good” OfstedInspection, its best ever SAT’s results, the end of a £1 million buildingprogramme and the creation of two extraclasses.

Inspectors, who visited in July, rated theschool good in all areas, praising theprogress children make in all yeargroups, the way they collaborate well andthe great use teachers make of theschool’s large grounds.

They also said that standards pupilsreached by year six were significantlyabove average, and this is reflected inthe school’s SATs results this year, which have shown children making moreprogress than ever before.

Nottinghamshire County Council hasspent more than £1 million on rewiring, completely refurbishing the exterior withnew windows, cladding and insulation, replacing the entire boiler and heatingsystem, and creating a new pitched roofon the main block and hall.

“Many people in Ruddington will knowthat St Peter’s is a converted secondaryschool, which is why it is so spacious,” MrMapperley, the School Head, said. Thisextra space has enabled two newclassrooms to be created in the existingbuilding this year, so the school couldadd an extra class in both years threeand four this September.

“Base Camp”, the school’s free-standingoutside classroom, has been completelyrefurbished and is becoming popular forhire with local community groups, as wellas forming a base for the school’soutdoor learning.

RUDD =Remove Unacceptable Dog Dirt

Owning a dog brings with it certainresponsibilities and none more so thanwhen that dog leaves the confines of itsown home/ garden and is taken out intoa public place.

Dogs should always be on a lead asthey are walked and exercised aroundour village streets. In certain areas theymay be allowed off their lead but theyshould always be kept in sight andunder control at all times. The majorityof owners go out armed with bags andcarefully monitor their pet and when itrequires a “comfort break” theydiligently bag the deposits. If ownersforget their bags there are variousdispensers around the village, particularly in the playground/ parkareas. Red coloured specific dogwaste bins are also situated throughoutthe village but it is fine to use any bin.“Bag that poo- any rubbish bin will do”

So why is our village peppered withpiles of dog dirt? The footpaths, alleys, green spaces and recreationalareas all seem to have been attackedby this blight. If the majority can bebothered to be responsible andconsiderate owners why can’t everyowner?

The two local schools activelyencourage families to walk, scoot orbike to school but on numerousoccasions parents/ carers report thatwheels and shoes have been coveredin dog dirt. It also impacts on otherresidents of all ages.

Feelings within the village are very highat the moment about this unacceptablesituation caused by an inconsiderateminority. Parents/ carers are veryconcerned about the possibleimplications of young children gettingdog faeces on themselves which in theworst case can lead to blindness due toan infection called Toxocara canis. They are determined to identify, nameand report the offenders to the BoroughCouncil. With the advent of moderntechnologies e.g. mobile phones theresources are now readily available torecord and report anything they observe.Continued on page 8

Traffic MadnessIf you are a car driver, or indeed apassenger, you cannot have failed tonotice the vast number of roadworksand diversions currently affecting ourroutes around Rushcliffe and in to theCity. Recently, on a trip back from thecity centre, we decided to detourthrough Wilford to visit a friend in WestBridgford. We were diverted threetimes and workmen were setting uptraffic lights to make progress furthereven more frustrating. Of course, I amsure this work is essentialmaintenance, development, repairsand/or engineering for the new NETextension but as we approach thefestive season I am not sure ‘goodwill’will be on the tip of everyone’s lipswhen they are trying to do theirChristmas shopping.

So why go out of the village for yourFestive Fayre? Why not shop in thevillage? Apart from the obvious thingslike turkey, ham and Brussels sprouts, you can get a massive selection of lessobvious things, from soft furnishings toChristmas trimmings, indigestionmixture to fine wine and many shopswill be stocking a good selection ofgifts. There are a number of ChristmasFair’s to be held in the village inNovember and December – some ofwhich will have more unusual andinteresting presents for you to buy.

So – give the city and its traffic jamsand parking charges a miss – shoplocally and help our village to stayvibrant and interesting. You can takeyour time, have a coffee break, chat tofriends and when you’re finished youcan even walk home.

Ruddington Group RDAcelebrates 25 years

The Ruddington Group Riding for theDisabled (RDA) has just celebrated itsSilver Jubilee with a special party onSaturday 19 October. The Group, which provides riding lessons and otherequestrian activities to children fromNethergate School in Clifton, wasestablished by Bradmore residentDiana Haddon and a group oflikeminded friends in 1988.

The Group originally rode at a ridingschool in Ruddington but later moved totheir current home at Bunny Hill RidingCentre. Diana – the Group’s onlyremaining founder member – has seendozens of riders and helpers come andgo over the years. And she was thrilledto be reunited with former RuddingtonGroup RDA staff members and evensome of the original Nethergateteachers at the 25th birthday party.

‘Ruddington Group RDA has achieveda huge amount over the last 25 years,’says Diana. ‘Our success in the RDA’sMusical Ride Competitions stands out– especially our second place in theNational Championships in 2004 for ourversion of “Joseph and the AmazingTechnicolour Dreamcoat”. We’ve takenpart in countless shows and festivals, triumphed at the RDA North MidlandsRegional Awards and even set up ourown achievement award in 2010, inmemory of our former rider, GoldGallagher, who sadly passed away in2003.’

The first recipient of the Gold GallagherAchievement Award, Yauvan Teeluck, embodies the essence of the RDA andwhat they aim to do. When Yauvan firststarted with the Ruddington GroupRDA, he couldn't even sit up on hispony – he kept falling over its neck andcouldn't hold himself upright. Butthanks to their help and instruction,Yauvan was able to ride almostunaided when he left the Group acouple of years ago.

As you’d expect, a huge amount of timeis spent by Diana and her fellowvolunteers in raising vital funds to keepRuddington Group RDA going.
