HISTORY OF INTERNET IN INDIA

The history of the Internet in India started with launch ofservices by VSNL on 15 August 1995

They were able to add about 10,000 Internet users within6 months

However, for the next 10 years the Internet experience inthe country remained less attractive with narrow-bandconnections having speeds less than 56 kbit/s (dial-up)

In 2004, the government formulated its broadbandpolicy which defined broadband as "an always-onInternet connection with download speed of 256 kbit/sor above

INTERNET IN INDIA AS OF 2004

From 2005 onward the growth of the broadband sector in the country

accelerated, but remained below the growth estimates of thegovernment and related agencies due to resource issues in last-mileaccess which were predominantly wired-line technologies

This bottleneck was removed in 2010 when the governmentauctioned 3G spectrum followed by an equally high profile auctionof 4G spectrum that set the scene for a competitive and invigorated wireless broadband market

Now Internet access in India is provided by both public and privatecompanies using a variety of technologies and media including dial-up(PSTN), xDSL, coaxial cable, Ethernet, FTTH, ISDN, HSDPA (3G), WiFi, WiMAX, etc

India now has the world third largest number of internetusers with over 121 million users(59% uses mobileinternet) .

As of December 2011 the estimated internet connection

stood at 22.39 million There are 165 Internet Service Provider(ISP) as of May

2013.

Cyber cafe remains the main source of internet access in

india In 2011 about 49% users access internet through Cyber

café.

BROADBAND IN INDIA

The number of broadband subscribers at the end of May2013 was 15.13 million

Cumulative Annual Growth rate (CAGR) of broadbandduring the five-year period between 2005 and 2010 was

about 117 per cent DSL, while holding slightly more than 75% of the local

broadband market, was steadily losing market share toother non-DSL broadband platforms, especially to wireless

broadband. One of the major issues facing the Internet segment in

India is the lower average bandwidth of broadbandconnections compared to that of developed countries.

BROADBAND IN INDIA(CONTD…)

According to 2007 statistics, the average download speedin India hovered at about 40 KB per second (256 kbit/s),the minimum speed set by TRAI, whereas theinternational average was 5.6 Mbit/s during the same

period In order to attend this infrastructure issue the

government declared 2007 as “the year of broadband”.

One of the major issue is the digital divide where growth

is biased in favour of urban areas; according to 2010statistics, more than 75 per cent of the broadbandconnections in the country are in the top 30 cities
