Presented in The Workshop Higher Education Administrator Training (HEAT) Program on Improving Research Excellence On July 6, 2011 Sebelas Maret University 2011
A. Introduction
Basically every human being needs information, that made people rich in knowledge of
both the scientific and social. We get an information may be obtained from a variety of both
printed and electronic media. For scientific information, we can get it in library. The role of
libraries in providing information services currently required to collaborate with the
advancement of technology as a form of quick service to users. The information that
presented at last transformed into electronic information, where users can immediately take
advantage of a collection that is presented without having to be in a room at the library. A
new paradigm occurs, that the success of libraries in the era of ICT is not seen from how
many visitors who come to the library but how much access is utilized by the users of the
existence of collections provided by the library. The library is a center of learning (learning
center) that serves as an agent of social change to improve the quality of life by meeting the
information needs of the community, by contributing in the dissemination of scientific
information in the field of education.
B. University Library is a library set up by universities to support the implementation of the
Tri Dharma University. In this case the library is obliged to provide information needed by users
both academic society itself or user from outside the college who have the right to use the library.
The objectives of the college library is to support the performance of universities in conducting
education by providing sources of scientific information in the library and always serve users
(students) during the running of a college education is concerned. Sources of information through
electronic media are packaged to provide convenience to the users in searching information. The
diversity of sources of information held is supported by a good tracking system, will facilitate the
user in the search, discovery, and utilization of information.

UNS academicians especially lecturers are required to have extensive knowledge about the
science that studies . It required sources of information that is relevant, up-to-date, and quality. The
steps taken by the UNS central Library is to form a digital library, subscribe e-journal and e-book.
With the availability of electronic collection provided by UNS central library, users can access without
having to come to the library, just sit on Internet network, then the collection can be accessed. For
researchers (especially lecturers), the information required in each phase of research activities. Search
pattern according to the situational information-gap-use-theory based on the information needs of
researchers are caused by gaps in knowledge, so that should be pursued filling those gaps with the
right information. The definition of information needs are as follows:
"... when the current state of knowledge is less than needed."2 Thus the information needs arise
when knowledge by person less than required, thus encouraging to find information. However, efforts
to find such information often find obstacles, such as caused by the method of information provision,
affordability information, or from the researchers themselves. Meanwhile, according to Prawati in
Isaac (2006: 92) states that in order to identify the information needs to be done by:3
a) Current approach, the user will pay attention to the needs of cutting-edge information.
b) Everyday approach, namely the need for information necessary in daily.
c) Exhaustive approach, the user needs for information thoroughly.
d) Catching-up approach, the user needs to be quick and concise information.
B. UNS Central Library Collections
The library collection is “Semua informasi dalam bentuk karya tulis, karya cetak, dan/atau karya
rekam dalam berbagai media yang mempunyai nilai pendidikan, dihimpun, diolah, dan dilayankan”. 4
Oriented to the interests of service users with advances in information and communication technology.
University library collections should be in accordance with the areas covered university. The library
collection in digital form provided by the UNS central library are:

In particular, library service collections of digital services, available in digital form. This is in line
with current conditions in which the library collection in digital form is needed to support the library in

compared with conventional collections/ printed. This causes users prefer to use digital collections
compared to the printed collections, in addition to saving time can also save cost and effort. The
advantages of e-journal collections in printed and electronic form can be seen in the following table:5

C. Conclusion
Central library UNS have a duty and obligation to meet the information needs and provide
information access facilities to the user . It is supported by providing a collection in printed format,
also provide electronic collection. Based on the picture above, it can be concluded that the tracking
information through the online media / internet provides many benefits for researchers. Information
needs can be fulfilled with sharing of information from the Higher Education (E-Journal Cengage
Gale, EBSCO, and Proquest), giving service and share IT-based information. Its easiness
information retrieval systems, is expected to motivate researchers in publishing scientific work, both
journals and books. Thus creating an academic atmosphere, a situation that encourages / motivates
communities that are in it to improve the quality and / or amount of scientific work
