newsletter on a beautifully sunny day. It is particularly on days like today that I marvel and feel grateful for both the view and location of The Kings of Wessex School, nestled in the Cheddar Valley amidst the picturesque Mendip Hills.

Paris sous la pluie... et enfin au soleil...! (February 2008)

At the beginning of February a group of seventeen Year 12 and Year 13 students accompanied by Mme Davies and

Monsieur Richardson spent a long weekend in Paris.

The group attended a two-day conference at the Palais des Congrès, but also found time for some sightseeing, a visit to the Paris office of a top English firm of solicitors and a glorious morning at the renowned Musée d’Orsay.

Here are just some of the student’s impressions:

En route to the Palais des Congrès .......Friday

We were met with a surprisingly busy metro station, in which people were pushed on to get as many in as possible. This was of course because the French had decided to go on strike again! I was hit with mass panic when I looked around to find my group had vanished…the only thing I could do was wait until I could squeeze onto the train.

I then had to pray I had heard the correct station to get off at that Madame Davies had hammered into our heads when we were together. When the stop came, I clambered through the sea of French and emerged out of the doors to be greeted by the terrified Madame Davies - who had been in a state of shock!

I was given a star’s welcome with applause and cheers…It was all part of just another eventful day in Paris. By Rhiannon Evans

Guest speakers....... Much to everyone’s disapproval on a sunny Saturday, the group endured four hours of lectures! However, we were all surprised at how interesting and amusing some of the lecturers were. An all-round success was Dan Germain, the co-founder of Innocent Smoothies. I think it was fair to say he was a bit of a smoothie himself! In a non-sickening, funny, informative and inspirational way.

He told us how, a small idea and a big risk led to a company with an estimated 1.5 million turnover in 2008. Dan is a great ambassador for being fair and nice, in every aspect of his work. He described how he believes that all his staff should be given the opportunity to achieve some of their life ambitions, or have a hobby funded by the company.

By Grace Barrett

A sunny afternoon...... After having conferences for the majority of the morning, we emerged from the Palais des Congrès, into a really sunny day, something that we hadn’t seen so far. We made our way towards L’Arc de Triomphe…eventually.

However, we were slowed down by le photographe (a.k.a Monsieur Richardson), who insisted on taking beaucoup de photos of everything!!! Whilst under L’Arc de Triomphe, Monsieur Richardson liked to make people aware of the risk of pick pocketing by posing as one himself. However, after tugging Clowance’s bag, he quickly ran away, suggesting I was to blame!

After trying to convince Clowance it wasn’t me, we headed to la Rivière Seine, for the boat trip.

Page 6: Issue no. 79 The Kings’ Messenger - The Kings of Wessex

6

We passed the Eiffel tower, which was a great photo opportunity for everyone. Just before going on the boat, we stocked up with crêpe avec chocolat et chichis, and sat at the back of the le bateau. It was a great tour along the river with amazing views of the city. After getting off the boat, we walked back to l’hôtel ready for the evening répas.

By Ellen Jenkins and Clowance Cotterill

Eating out...... Thursday evening: McDo, (a.k.a. McDonalds)

After a busy day of travelling Madame Davies made the decision to feed us with this delightful dish!

It was very busy and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we were filled with fear, confusion or both, at the realisation that this is where our French-speaking weekend began. Ordering in French proved manageable and we soon had our food in front of us.

On emerging from McDo we had a very soggy walk to 'La Tour Eiffel', but the rain didn't bother us when we saw its bright lights against the night sky. On purchasing our 'billets', we discovered that we could only get to the 'deuxième étage', and although this was a little disappointing we all understood when we took a walk around the east side and were nearly blown off the edge.

Even though it was 'très froid', the views of Paris were spectacular, and it was a great photo opportunity. On our way home Mme Davies saved the day and treated us to 'un chocolat chaud' in a little café.

Friday evening: Bistro Romain Opera, mmmmmmmmmmm... After a small amount of confusion as to which restaurant we had booked a table at (there were two with the same name about 500 metres from each other) we entered this lovely restaurant and were seated at three or four little tables. We soon had some fantastic food which we all tucked into and enjoyed thoroughly!

Saturday evening: Le Self Service This was the night when the girls got their glad-rags on, we had time to return to the hotel before going out and we thought a little effort would be made for our last night in Paris. Well, the restaurant although promisingly located at the top of the Champs Elysées wasn’t exactly what we had in mind…But we decided that having to carry our food to our table wasn't the end of the world and we convinced ourselves that it would be ok!

The chips were good, the sauce covering the steak was passable; although, the steak itself was rather rare... well, in fact I think it was still twitching! After a few steaks were sent back to the kitchen to be heated all the way through we decided that we would munch our way through and that an early night didn’t sound too bad at all.

PSHE/ Citizenship News Flash The Bare Facts revealed...

The delicate topic of sex and relationship education is a

recurring theme within our PSHE/ Citizenship Scheme

of Work. We use a variety of resources and take full

advantage of visiting health professionals and other

guests to ensure our young people are well informed

and aware so that they can make appropriate and

responsible lifestyle choices.

We appreciate however, that it is - to say the least - not

always an easy topic for discussion between parents and

adolescents... The half term’s Kings’ Messenger is

therefore an ideal vehicle to let you know about a new

IT-based resource available nationally, specifically

aimed at assisting parents through this potential

minefield.

Just over a month ago the BBC launched its “Bare Facts”

season across TV, radio and online. Central to this

offering is a new website where parents and carers can

find out almost everything they ever wanted their

children to know about sex, love and relationships but

were too embarrassed to tell them.

The website www.bbc.co.uk/barefacts has been

developed in consultation with the fpa (formerly the

Family Planning Association), and provides advice to

parents on how to approach some of the trickiest

questions and issues via a series of easily accessible

video clips with links to other useful information, tips

and links. By Katie Davies, PSHE Subject Leader

Science Revision Guides – to be returned!

YEAR 9: All Science

Revision Guides should

have been returned

immediately after the SATs.

Please ensure that they are

returned by Friday 6 June

2008 at the very latest.

Students will be charged for

them if they are not

returned by this date.

Year 9 will be beginning their GCSE Science course

straight after half term so it is important for all students to

copy up any work missed during this time.

YEAR 11: Revision Guides and CDs/text books must be

returned straight after the last Science exam.

Any unused Workbooks would be gratefully received too –

although hopefully there shouldn’t be any! Bethan Riddick

Matthew 7:7-8 I wonder what these words from the Bible mean to you? At a busy and stressful time in the life of the school when every year group faces exams of one kind or another, I guess that now is a good time to consider what we rely on to help us through those difficult times. Senior Boys Football: Under 19 Somerset Cup Final – The Kings Of Wessex 1 v 0 Gordano

Our 1ST XI Football Team made history on Friday evening by becoming Kings’ first senior side to win the

Under 19 Somerset Cup.

The squad travelled to Street Football Club where they met Gordano School. Unbeaten throughout the

season they arrived in confident mood having dispatched Norton Hill, Chew Valley and Churchill senior

sides in the previous rounds. Two of the three games had gone to extra time and it looked very much as if

the final was heading the same way.

Kings really took the game to their Bristol opponents and dominated long phases of the match. Many

chances were created but the hard-working strike force of Oli Sealey and Mike Taylor just couldn’t beat the

Gordano keeper who kept his side very much in the match. The Kings back four of Captain Lewis Matthews,

John Te Boon, Dan Hobbs and Sam Stephens were immense and they snuffed out any real threats from

Gordano’s attacks with a superb defensive display. In midfield, Pete Coates, Mo Affifi, Rob Edwards and Ali

Hall battled for every 50-50 ball in the middle third of the pitch and ensured the momentum stayed with our

side. Kings’ goalkeeper David Haining was rarely troubled such was the solidity of his defensive cover and

he was effective in his role.

The game began to edge nervously towards the lottery of a penalty shoot-out when Kings’ substitute striker

Tom Fozzard rode a very physical tackle to keep his balance and slot the ball through to Pete Coates who

calmly slotted the ball low and past the Gordano keeper to take the lead with just 3 minutes remaining.

Despite players dropping with cramp all over the field, Kings held their nerve and composure and jubilant

scenes from players and sizeable crowd alike greeted the ref’s final blast. Lewis Matthews received the

silverware on behalf of his side and the celebrations began…

Year 10 Rounders: Over 25 students are regularly attending Rounders practices on Thursday lunchtimes. The level of performance is

improving and the teams have played well in their matches so far.

The first fixture was at home against Sidcot which was a high scoring game which Kings won 24-13.

Our next game was against Wells Blue School which is usually one of our stronger opponents when we were able to

field two teams. The players fielded extremely well and this was the difference between the two sides. Kings won

both games 17-17 and 10-3. Unfortunately, matches against St Dunstan’s were cancelled due to bad weather.

There are matches after half term – and the teams look forward to maintaining their 100% match winning record!
