Academy Sport 2016 - 2017

The year 2016 - 17 was an all action year for sport at The Kings of Wessex Academy. The Academy entered teams in all the major team sports in both friendly and cup competitions. The boys started the year off in fine style, with both the year 9 and 10 teams reaching the later stages of The Somerset Schools Cup. Unfortunately neither side made the final this year. It was another successful year for the girls’ rugby who won the South West Girls 10 aside competition for the third year in a row. A fantastic experience for the girls and an outstanding achievement for the Academy. Success also came from the year 10 girls who won the area netball and hockey tournament. The year 9 girls won the hockey and Year 9 and 10 were runners up in the Mendip Netball tournament. The summer term was, as always, a busy time with many year 9 and 10 students competing for the Academy in the County Athletics competitions. A special mention should go to Abi Peake who ran National qualifying times in the 100m at the county championships. A number of year 9 students were selected to represent the Mendip Athletics Team after successful performances at the Mendip Athletics at Millfield School. The department also participated in friendly competitions in rounders. The year 10 girls won the area rounders competition and qualified for the finals at Millfield Inter House sport saw some exciting competition throughout the year, with a large number of students competing in Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Football and Handball. As usual the Academy Sports Day was closely contended with over 200 students taking part in the day. This year sports day records were reset in many events and a number of academy records were set on the track and field. The Swim Gala also made a comeback this year and record numbers participated, there were many outstanding individual performances and the standard of swimming was outstanding. The Physical Education Department would like to thank all students who have taken part last year and all staff who have contributed to the extracurricular program. As always we look forward to another successful year in 2017-18.

The Kings of Wessex Academy Equestrian Team The Kings of Wessex Academy equestrian team have continued to enjoy huge success over the 2017 year- competing at many top venues including Hickstead and the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The highlights of the year include the Winter British Show jumping Finals at Wales and West centre where our teams won four of the five team championship titles! Also at this final Katie Thomas won individually in the 110m. This success was followed by Kings finishing top of the national show jumping school leagues at 1 metre and 110cm to claim the prize of a sponsored training camp held at Arena UK in Lincoln. Their league positions also qualified the teams to compete at the prestigious British Show jumping Championships at Stoneleigh Park in August. Here our 80cm team of Hattie Newton, Naomi Pollard, Lily Bedingfield and Jade Wright placed 3rd. In the 90cm the team of Sam Fountain, Iona Impey, Alice Sandiford and Florence Human WON championship title. This success was replicated by Sam, Iona, Florence - this time joined by Katie Thomas - who retained the 1m championship title. A fantastic double victory for the Kings teams! Katie Thomas was then joined by Hamish Clarke and Emily Mugford in the 110cm class taking 2nd place. There were also many individual placings at this championship for Kings riders making this year our most successful to date! Kings equestrian teams have also qualified for numerous classes at the forthcoming National Schools Equestrian Association Championships to be held at Addington Manor in October - GOOD LUCK to them all. Anyone interested in joining the equestrian teams please contact Claire and Rob Thomas as we are always looking for new members [email protected]
