K ings Mounta in Chapter President Dr. Joe Chambers and his nephew Brian Sims have spearheaded the successful effort to have a license plate approved for the benefit of the Tennessee Society SAR by working with their State Senator Rusty Crowe (R) Johnson City and his very able Research Assistant Logan Grant.

The license plate will represent elements of the Gadsden Flag, a historical American flag with a yellow field depicting a snake coiled and ready to strike. Positioned below the snake are the words "DON’T TREAD ON ME". The flag was designed by and is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden. It was also used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag.

Proceeds from the sale of SAR’s license plates will fund patriotic education, historic preservation, and numerous other eligible activities in Tennessee. The license plate design illustrated above is not the approved design. The state will design the actual license plate that will be sold to the public. Details about how to order your license plate will be included in the next TENNESSEE PATRIOT.

Let us remember our obligations to our forefathers who gave us our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, an independent Supreme Court, and a Nation of free men!

Colin Douglas Wakefield was born in Mobile, Alabama on December 2, 1960, to Dr. Paul McLin Wakefield and Nancy Ruth Clemmer Wakefield, both native Tennesseans. In 1963 Dr. Wakefield moved his family, now including one‐year‐old Cynthia, to Fayetteville, Tennessee, where he established and maintained a successful dental practice until his retirement in 1999. In 1971, the family grew again when John was born.

As a boy, Colin acquired an appreciation for his family and his heritage. He learned to hunt and fish with his dad as they explored the “hills and hollers” of southern Middle Tennessee. He learned the value of hard work, self‐reliance and, at times, sacrifice and still remembers a little saying that his dad used to tell him: “Don’t expect more out of something than you’re willing to put into it.”

Colin graduated from the old Central High School in Fayetteville in 1979. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and graduated in 1984 with a BS majoring in Finance. After graduation, he came back to his hometown and began a career in banking. In November of 1986, while attending a University of Tennessee football game, he became reacquainted with the sister of his close friend and old college roommate, John Helton. Elizabeth Ann Helton (Nan) was also a UT graduate from Fayetteville and they had many shared memories. Well, as fate would have it, in April of 1987, they became engaged and on September 19, 1987, they married.

Over the course of the next ten years the three greatest joys of their life occurred with the births of their three daughters. Mollie Asher was born in 1989, Katherine Ruth in 1991, and Bonnie McLin in 1997. Mollie is a 2011 graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and is currently a second year law school student at the Belmont University College of Law in Nashville. Katie is a comped senior at the University of the South and will graduate in May of 2013. She will intern this summer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and plans to earn a doctorate in marine biology. Bonnie is a sophomore at Fayetteville High School and plans to attend the University of the South after graduation.

Colin left banking in 2001 and began a career as a certified real estate appraiser and today owns and operates Wakefield & Associates, a real estate appraisal business in Fayetteville. His area covers most of Middle Tennessee and North Alabama. Nan is an Assistant Professor and the Program Coordinator of Management Information Systems at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee. She is a member of the Kings Mountain Messenger Chapter DAR. Together they live on a seventy‐acre hill farm about seven miles west of Fayetteville, just off the south side of US Highway 64. “It can be a lot of work at times,” says Colin of the farm, “but when I come home after work, especially on those beautiful Tennessee weekends, and look out across those hills...why, I never want to leave it.”

During his time as a local businessman, Colin has remained active in the community. He is a Past President of the Fayetteville Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He is a past Director of the Fayetteville‐Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce and a past Chairman of the Fayetteville Area Better Business Bureau. He has served on the Lincoln County Commission and as a Governor appointed board member of the Tennessee Elk River Development Agency. He is a member of the John R. Massey Camp 152 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He is a Mason and a member of Andrew Jackson Lodge #68. Colin and family are all members of First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville where Colin currently serves as a Ruling Elder on the Session.

Colin’s involvement with SAR began in 2008, when he and his father first became members. They were both originally inducted into the Tombigbee Chapter in October of that year. Later that same year, then TNSSAR Secretary Rick Hollis and then TNSSAR Registrar Dick Spencer sent out an invitation to attend an organizational meeting planned for January of 2009 in Tullahoma, Tennessee to see if there was enough interest to start a new chapter. Colin attended and came away from the meeting with the position of Provisional Chapter President. A second organizational meeting was held in February of 2009, in Fayetteville, where the proposed new chapter’s name was selected and it was determined that there were enough members to proceed with a charter. On Saturday, March 28th, 2009, the Joseph Greer Chapter was chartered in Lynchburg, Tennessee and Colin served as its Charter President. He currently serves as Registrar of the Joseph Greer Chapter.

In addition to his tenure as Charter President, Colin has served in the following capacities for the TNSSAR: Middle Tennessee Vice‐President: 2010‐2011, State Vice‐President: 2011‐2012, and State President‐Elect: 2012‐2013. He has been awarded the bronze Good Citizenship medal, as well as the Meritorious Service medal with one Oak Leaf cluster. He is also a George Washington Fellow and has been a contributor to the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage and Friends of the Library. His proudest moments though are those spent as a member of the TNSSAR Color Guard. “Whether you’re marching in a parade in downtown Nashville, talking to a group of school kids, or dedicating the grave of a Patriot out in the middle of rural Lincoln County, there’s just something special about all that...I can’t explain it.”

John Sevier Chapter SAR President Timothy K. Adams and the TNSSAR JROTC Chair John Lynch presented Jim Gentry Chevrolet, of Kindall TN, a Flag Certificate on December 28, 2012. The recognition marks the Chapters appreciation for the Chevy dealership’s visible demonstration of commitment to heritage and patriotism in the Kindall area. The large garrison flag (20’x38’) a top a 60ft aluminum pole can been seen for miles along the Interstate 24 corridor, and is viable 24/7 for all Americans to see and appreciate. This dealership has been here since 1932 and has become a landmark of Kindall’s rich heritage. The Sons of the American Revolution is proud of the leadership shown by Jim Gentry’s dealership and we hope that this example of their

commitment to our heritage and patriotism will inspire others to fly the American flag with pride.

The Sons of the American Revolution is the leading male patriotic lineage society in America and was founded in 1889. SAR strives to perpetuate the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy and triumph of the men and women who gained Independence for the American People. Certainly, there is no greater symbol of our freedom and what it represents than the display of the American Flag.

PRESIDENT COLIN D. WAKEFIELD COMMEMORATES PATRIOTS DAY 2013 AT TENNESSEE STATE SENATE

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT COLIN D. WAKEFIELD TO MEMBERS OF THE TENNESSEE STATE SENATE, 15 APRIL 2013

Lieutenant Governor (Ron) Ramsey . . .Ladies & Gentlemen of the Senate . . .

As members of the Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, it is our honor to be here with you today to present the Colors in recognition of Patriots Day. I also want to thank Senator and Compatriot Mark Norris for his gracious invitation . . .

In 2008, this body established Patriots Day to honor and recognize the opening events of the War of the Revolution and the struggle through which the nation passed in its early days . . .As I reflect on this I’ve often wondered what our Patriot ancestors would say if they could see us now . . .There is no way to know for sure, but I would like to think that, on the whole, they would be proud of us . . .

As Tennesseans it is inherent in our nature to want to be good stewards of that which our ancestors left to us . . .Proof of this I found in a quote from a Tennessee Congressman who happened to visit Bunker Hill while on a trip to Boston some time back . . .He said, “We then went up to the old battle‐ground on Bunker’s Hill where they were erecting a monument to those who fell in that daybreak battle of our rising glory. I felt as if I wanted to call them up, and ask them to tell me how to protect the Liberty they bought for us with their blood; but as I could not do so, I resolved on that Holy Ground, as I had done elsewhere, to go for my country, always and everywhere.” That Tennessee Congressman was David Crockett . . .

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you again for this privilege . . .

May God bless each of you, may God bless our Great State of Tennessee, and may God continue to bless the Unites States of America.

COL. BENJAMIN CLEVELAND 1738 ‐ 1806

Benjamin Cleveland was born in Virginia, later served in the North Carolina House of Commons and led the Wilkes County militia at the Battle of King’s Mountain on October 7, 1780. This battle was considered a turning point of the American Revolution in the South. On January 20, 1838 the Tennessee State legislature designated the settlement at Taylor’s Place as a county seat of Bradley County and named it Cleveland in honor of Col. Benjamin Cleveland.

More than 200 people gathered on Patriots Day 2013 to view the ceremony and unveiling of the statue of Col. Benjamin Cleveland in First Street Plaza in Cleveland, Tennessee. Rain forced the crowd comprised of towns people, SAR and DAR members, as well as Cleveland family members from around the United States inside the Museum Center at Five Points lobby.

The Tennessee Society SAR Color Guard posted colors and Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter SAR President Van Deacon presided. Fundraising for the project was led by Phil Newman. An able team of leaders were recognized for their participation. Southern District SAR Vice President General John R. Taylor of Mize, Mississippi presented twelve members with Dist r ic t Meritorious Service medals and certificates.

A resolution was read by Deacon prior to the unveiling.

Mayor Tom Rowland accepted the presentation of the statue to the city. “On behalf of the city of Cleveland ... we appreciate very much [the statue]. This is another spoke in the wheel toward revitalizing our downtown district,” Rowland said. “It gives us a point of reference, and a point for future generations to come and say, ‘Yes, that is the man we named our city after.’”

Sculptor Josh Coleman, a local artist commissioned to create the Cleveland statue, was present for the unveiling proceedings.

“I can’t imagine too many incredible things to do in your own city,” Coleman said. “It is just a complete honor. He said seeing the looks on guests’ faces at the unveiling was reward in and of itself.

SPECIAL THANKS to the Cleveland Daily Banner for Mayor Rowland and Sculptor Coleman’s quotes.

In 2007, Bill Eubank and John Echerd presented the marker with the letters “S A R” to the NSSAR Revolutionary War Graves Committee and obtained approval to produce the marker as designed. The Merchandise Committee endorsed the idea because they did not believe that their staff could handle the heavy markers. The Revolutionary War Graves chair submitted the marker idea to the Executive Committee for approval. Since that time, numerous markers have been purchased by chapters across the country to mark Patriot graves.

In 2012, a new committee chair, acting without sufficient knowledge, did not anticipate that the Tennessee Society went through the proper procedures to have the granite marker design authorized by NSSAR and made an impetuous public claim that TNSSAR was guilty of a copyright infringement against the SAR. In response to the injudicious claim, documents were soon produced that cleared TNSSAR of all implications of impropriety.

In the meantime, TNSSAR created a new marker design with the word “Patriot”. Approved by our Board of Governors at its January 2013 meeting, sales of the new granite Patriot grave marker design have begun.

Some have suggested an alternative to ordering the markers. So, for added convenience, one may use a template to have your local monument company carve a grave Patriot marker of your preference. Samples of templates that may be used are found on this page.

We hope this is helpful to all SAR

WILL REICH HONORED WITH NEW AWARD

Our obligation to our forefathers Spring 2013 Page 19

BRANTLEY ROSS PILLER NEW STEPHEN HOLSTON MEMBER

The Stephen Holston Chapter, Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution announced that Will Reich is the inaugural recipient of the Haynie/Britton Service Award which has been created by Compatriot Dr. Alan DeCarlo to recognize significant contributions made by youth involved in service to activities sponsored by the Stephen Holston Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution.

Will Reich is a member of the Stephen Holston Chapter TNSSAR and a freshman at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. The Haynie/Britton Service Award is a newly instituted award for involvement in community projects and activities associated with the Stephen Holston Chapter, Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. It is open for Members 16‐25 years of age and promotes young adult service. It was noted that Will Reich significantly contributed to the restoration of the Haynie Family Cemetery, headstone restoration and placement of Revolutionary War Veteran Markers at this and other Revolutionary War cemeteries throughout Eastern and Middle Tennessee. Will has also been active in supporting activities with Ben Atchley Veteran's Hospital, and other American War Veterans recognition activities along with historic reenactments and historical tour guide at the Governor John Sevier Marble Springs Historic Site. The award will be presented at the Chapter’s annual President’s Day Luncheon on February 23rd.

Brantley Ross Piller is the newest member of Stephen Holston Chapter in Knoxville. Here, sitting with his "Mickey", they are both holding the membership certificate; he has his SAR pin in his hands. Some background.

Brantley's great....grandfather, George Ross served as a private in the Revolutionary War in Col. William Bratten's South Carolina Regiment. Later through an aide of future President James K. Polk, a practicing lawyer

in Columbia, Tennessee, he received a pension of $50 per year certificate #19543, 4 March 1831. He died 21 August 1826 and was buried at his farm on Indian Creek in Hardin Co, Tennessee. In 1905‐06, Montague Ross received a permit from the Quarter Master General’s office in the War Department and obtained a permit to remove George Ross and his wife (placed in same casket) from the old family burial ground at Indian Creek and were reinterred at Shiloh National Cemetery at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, the site of the Battle of Shiloh. The burial records of Shiloh National Cemetery show: "George Ross, Revolutionary War Soldier, Col. Bratten's S. Carolina Regiment, grave #3611." He is the only revolutionary War soldier buried at Shiloh. [Ross grave marker at right]

Brantley's 3rd great‐grandfather Isaac Walker Ross, served with the 2nd Mounted Infantry for the Union, during the Civil War. He was wounded in leg, and his horse killed during a skirmish near Clifton, Tennessee. He suffered from a permanent limp for the rest of his life. I have attached a letter, you might find interesting, written to Isaac, by another veteran, giving a very personal account of the skirmish when they were both wounded. He is asking Isaac for help in getting a pension many years after the war.

Brantley's great‐grandfather was a patrol plane commander, flying a PBM Mariner in the Atlantic and Pacific during WWII. In the Pacific, he flew night missions at 200 feet above the water bombing and strafing Japanese shipping. He was awarded the DFC. His grandfather Bill Ross served as an MP with the 4th Infantry Division, 1972‐73.

His grandfather, Bill Ross stated, “Brantley comes from a long line of grandfathers in uniform, but it would make me happy if he never has to serve.”

Kelton Cemetery at Black Fox Spring (c. 1813) Bicentennial Restoration Project 2013

Compatriot David Miles Vaughn is a member of the Tennessee Sons of the American Revolution, Col Anthony Bledsoe Chapter in Gallatin, Tennessee. He began his genealogy search of his family in 2008. His 2nd cousin Sandra Barnes Drake of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, a member of the local Daughters of the American Revolution, told him he was a direct descendant of an American Revolutionary War Patriot named William Kelton. David was hooked and began learning more about his ancestors. David got all of his documentation together and used Sandra’s DAR application to become a new member of the Sons of the American Revolution. After becoming a member in 2009, Sandra told him that she had been to the cemetery where William Kelton was buried in a field off of

Bradyville Pike in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Well, he wanted to see the cemetery. She had only been there once in 1981, and knew the approximate location. David and Sandra stopped at a man’s house on Bradyville Pike and talked with him to see if they could park there and walk across his backyard, which was about eighty yards to the woods behind his house. Once they arrived at the edge of the woods Sandra could not believe how it had grown up, and that this was going to be a challenge just to find the graves among the briars and small trees and the extensive undergrowth. She had told David that most all of the stone markers had been broken and laying on the ground in disarray. Well she was right after, about twenty minutes of digging through the undergrowth they located a couple of stones. They were still legible. After more searching in the area they found William Kelton and his wife Elizabeth Ramsay Kelton’s stone markers lying on the ground. They also found a few more markers that were on the ground and a few that were still standing.

Over the next couple of years David starting talking with local people about how to restore this cemetery. He soon discovered that this was a project that he was going to have to take on himself. In 2012, David started talking with the landowner about what he was planning on the restoration project, and the landowner said that he had purchased the property just a few years before and knew that the cemetery was there and was hoping someone would restore it. So David talked with some of his best friends during the summer of 2012 to see if they could volunteer in the winter of 2013 to help him with this project. They all said that they could help him in the different phases of the restoration.

In January 2013, David and three friends went to the cemetery with chainsaws and a brush cutter to start the cleanout. It took them two days to clean out a 100 x 100 ft. area and what they discovered was amazing. Nineteen markers were found. They had to move some of the markers during the cleanout so they used red markings flags where the stones laid with numbers and names that were on the markers for putting them back where they were found. What was also amazing was that where they were laying, they were approximately close where they originally were because the bottom of the markers where they broke off were still visible in the ground. After the cleanout was completed all of the stone markers were put back with the marking flags. There was about four rows of stone markers. Wow, what had they discovered? They made a diagram with all of the names and location.

Then David went to Lowes with some pictures of the cemetery showing the cleanup and the diagram with the cemetery names to see what materials could be donated for this project. Lowes donated lumber and concrete for the resetting of the stones. Then about a week later, David and four of his friends went to the cemetery to start the marker resetting process. They dug new footers that were 10 inches deep by 1 x 2 foot square and poured concrete, and stood the markers and reset them. One note to add that while they were digging the footers they discovered one more marker and in another location they found a small brass marker plate. He used a granite epoxy to glue some of the broken stones back together. He made a couple of concrete flat stones to put the brass plate on. One of the markers that the inscription was on the very bottom, was laid flat on the concrete so it could be read.

Our obligation to our forefathers Spring 2013 Page 21

Over the next few weeks David went to some other vendors for donations of more materials and they were all eager to help from top soil, sign metal, posts and cable for the fence and grass seed. David and his friends first spread two trailer loads of topsoil to fill in indentions, holes, stumps so the cemetery could be level. Then they laid a flat rock entrance to the cemetery then put in the posts and installed a cable through the posts to make a fence barrier around the cemetery. Then after the cemetery sign was fabricated and lettered, it was installed.

The Kelton Cemetery Restoration project was completed. Now David used his diagram of names to start connecting the people buried there. It is amazing what he found. First, William Kelton, his 5th Great Grandfather who died May 18th, 1813, was the first burial. William purchased the land consisting of 619 acres in 1801 in which he is buried. Not only his wife Elizabeth, but a son James Kelton and his wife Elizabeth White and three of William’s granddaughters and a great granddaughter and a great grandson, William Abraham Sloan, are also buried there and a few other family members and two burials that are not related. The last known burial was 1940. Note that most of the death dates were early 1800’s.

Since 2008, when David started his family research he found many ancestors and information. For example, he just got his first SAR supplemental. Anthony Crockett was with the 7th Virginia Continental Regiment. Anthony Crockett fought in the War of 1812. Last year David discovered his connection to Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition. David has over 1100 relatives now in his research and you can visit his Family Tree Website at www.Davidvaughn.tribalpages.com The Kelton Cemetery at Black Fox Spring “200 Years Celebration and Grave Marking” will be May 18th, 2013, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee see www.Anthonybledsoe.com for further information.

TENNESSEE SOCIETY SAR MISSION

Perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men and women who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man's eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions, including the stories of those brave men and women who came to this Tennessee wilderness with little more than their raw grit and determination and proceeded to claw out a gracious society of which WE are the recipients.
