The Big Draw
This year the theme for The Big Draw was ‘Living Lines’. We chose to explore the idea of Living Lines by looking at maps as a way of documenting the lines and routes (roads/paths) we travel everyday. The student’s daily commute to school seemed the obvious option and we have been impressed by their
colourful response as opposed to the presumed swathes of blackness and frustrated scribbles envisaged. Instead it seems they love getting up early; they love walking a mile in the rain with a stream of noisy traffic splashing giant jets of water all over their fresh white socks; they LIKE coming to school! The
work was inspired by the artist Alison Worman who documents her journeys using and a variety of mixed-media, looking specifically at texture, mark-making, composition and abstraction. The final piece (along with audio) should hopefully be available to view soon.Miss Wood
Class Charts Parental Logon and Access
Dear Parent / Carer
As you are aware we have been focused this term on raising expectations of behaviour for learning using the the Gold Standard.
One of the tools which allows teachers to recognise and reward the good work done by students, or to register concerns is Class Charts software which is used in every classroom. For example, with the click of a button its possible to reward a student with 20 credits for good progress in lessons. It has other intelligent functions such as allowing your child’s tutors to run an instant report to see how they have done over a week or half term.
As we have developed its use over this term we now are in a position open the parent functions to you. With a logon you can look at your child’s profile to see • A positive and negative behaviour points record over time • An activity feed which gives a short description of the reason for an award or cause for concern.• AM and PM attendance It also has a home work function which for the moment will not be in use as we continue to use Show My Homework. All of the information can be viewed on a range of platforms and is easy to use on a smart phone.
Our intention is for us to roll out the logon information in the week beginning 6th November, initially by email one year on each day of the week to give us the capability to respond to any issues should they arise.
From personal experience I have used this with my son’s new secondary school and the set up and use is very easy. More importantly, the information that you get from it is very helpful and allows you to talk and support your children with their schooling.
The data that you will be able to see in the first instance is from the start of this academic year.
Many thanksMr Jobling

The Grand Old Duke of York
The Grand Old Duke of York had 10,000 men. He lost 10% of them on the way to the top of the hill. He then lost 15% of the rest on the way back down. What percentage of his 10,000 men remained when he got to the bottom of the hill?
How did you get on with last week’s challenge?

SensationalDefinition--Sensational- adj. 1. of or relating to the senses. 2. exceedingly great, outstanding. 3. arousing strong feelings, intense interest, often in an exaggerated way. Discussion--This is one of the catch phrases for sports announcers everywhere. I don't know how many times I have heard an announcer shout something like, "What a sensational play!" In this context, sensational is used to describe excel-lence.Sensational has always seemed to me to be a somewhat cheesy word. I picture a game show host saying something like, "We have a wide array of sensational prizes to give away today, " or something like that. I can also see this being a fa-vorite word of the car salesman, "Come on over here, I want to show you some sensational deals that we have!" I mean, who really says sensational in everyday conversation?Sensational can also be used to mean relating to the senses. For example, some-one who jumps into a pool of extremely cold water is bound to have a sensational experience!Sensational is also used to refer to something that is attempting to arouse some-ones interest and emotion, such as a news story. Reporters often sensationalize a story to pique the audience's interest, exaggerating certain points and minimiz-ing others. We have grown accostomed to this sensationalized form of report-ing on shows such as Inside Edition or Current Affair, but even the bigger news shows are guilty of these practices. It's all about ratings, after all.
Etymology--Sensational- formed from English sensation, borrowed from French sensation, from Medieval Latin sensationem, from Late Latin sensatus, from Lat-in sensus, feeling.

Year 11 Horticulture NewsThe Year 11 Horticulture Students have been experimenting with Growing Media this week. They have made their own recipe for compost and designed aquaponics systems that they will build in school from recycled materials. They have also been experimenting with aquagel as a soil free alternative for decorative planting. They will be making some of their unique designs over the next 2 weeks and these will be on sale in school to raise money for course materials.Miss Burden

Active in Mind Watersports trip- Hove Lagoon
A group of students began a three week carousel of watersports as part of the Active in Mind project at Hove Lagoon which involved taking part in taster sessions in sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding. In week one students were taught how to rig and sail a small dingy, adjust sails according to the wind and carry out a capsize drill. Week two saw students have a go at windsurfing which tested student balance,
co-ordination and strength as well as their ability to adjust their sails according to the direction of the wind. During the final session students were introduced to Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) where they learned how to manoeuvre their board using a variety of different strokes.

Parliament Week is being held to engage students in the work of Parliament: On Monday 13th of November the school will be holding a workshop and mock Commons debate andOn Friday 17th November we will have a talk and Q&A, with MP for Worthing West, Sir Peter Bottomley MP.
‘The Passenger’On Monday afternoon all Year 11s watched a performance by the Box Clever Theatre Company. It was called ‘The Passenger’ and centered around all the issues that teenagers have to deal with when being a passenger in a car with a new driver; drinking, drugs, phones, acting to impress peers etc.
The 3 actors really held the audience’s attention. They were funny, energetic, full of emotion and impact. The performance communicated a powerful message to our students about the impact they can
have on the driver of a vehicle.
Two outstanding performances from Joshua Puttock and Shauni Robey deserve praise as they were brave enough to volunteer to take part in the performance. The event was funded
by Sussex Safer Roads Campaign. Thanks to all Year 11’s who were an excellent audience!Miss Gittus
Tall Ship Sailing A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to go tall ship sailing for the day. I had to be at Gunwharf Quays at 8:30am to board. When we were getting onto the boat we were given the team that we would be in for the rest of the day. I was put in Front Starboard, which is working at the front right of the boat. We had to organise and prepare the sails ready to catch the wind to depart. I learnt that there are 3 sails, the Royal, The T’gallant and the Topsol. The boat we travelled on was a 3 mast birch. I had a really good day, it was a great experience. I would like to thank the Rotary club for giving me this amazing opportunity.
