Write On The Money: SESAC celebrates songwriters and publishers at last night’s (11/1) 2015 Nashville Music Awards. Pictured (l-r) are SESAC’s Tim Fink, Country Songwriter of the Year Cary Barlowe, Song of the Year (“Homegrown”) writer Wyatt Durrette and SESAC’s Shannan Hatch.

Remotes Open CMA Week “Brad does most of the parodies,” Carrie Underwood said of her CMA Awards hosting partner in an interview at the radio remotes orientation last night (11/1). “Anything you don’t like, Brad usually does.” She and the referenced Brad Paisley hammed it up in typical fashion, proving that though some things have changed from last year, their quick wit isn’t one of them.

CMA board Radio Committee chair Clay Hunnicutt (now running label Big Loud) addressed the programmers and personalities gathered in the Music City Center, promising a strong slate of participating artists. “One of the things the radio committee did this year is establish a new criteria for artists to get into the room,” he said. “You have to have a No. 1, be on the charts, Hall of Famer, previous winner – things like that. What you’ll see is really the best of the best.”

The shift may cut the total number of artists making the rounds by a handful from last year’s 90, a smaller drop than expected. “Because of how great it went last year, a lot of artists saw how beneficial it was,” Hunnicutt said. As was pointed out later, stations can’t pass on an interview, so the roster of well-established artists should help participating stations get audio “you’ll actually use – not the famous, ‘We’ll can it and use it later,’” Hunnicutt said dryly. “If you say you don’t do that, you’re lying.” The main event, of course, was the press conference with Paisley and Underwood, whose hosting commitment precludes hours spent at the remotes. The Q&A format was slightly more controlled this year, with radio attendees reading pre-selected questions. ABC Radio’s Andrea Dresdale opened with one about gauging what jokes might be too mean to another artist. “It’s what would make you feel bad personally,” Paisley said. “It’s kind of an exercise in empathy ... putting yourself in that person’s position and asking, ‘Would that offend me?’ Then realizing we aren’t quite as easily offended as a few, so would that offend them?” Underwood added, “Between the two of us we know everybody pretty well and can usually say whether or not somebody would be okay with something. We hope everybody can laugh at themselves because ... we are not afraid to laugh at ourselves.” WQDR/Raleigh’s Mike Wheless inquired about the aforementioned comedy songs. “We didn’t do parodies the first year,” Paisley said. “The second year we were hosting I did Letterman the Monday before the awards show. He had somebody come on and sing the top 10 list. They were (continued on page 10)

A Fine Line Of Compliance When Premiere’s syndicated The Bobby Bones Show drew a $1 million FCC fine for iHeartMedia over the misuse of EAS tones (CAT 5/19), many broadcasters began to question the extent to which today’s personalities are versed in the rules of the radio. “It wasn’t supposed to happen,” Bones says of the incident, without going into specifics in the September Country Aircheck print publication. So Country Aircheck asked some top-level programmers what they do to make sure those kinds of mistakes don’t happen. Cumulus SVP/Content & Programming Mike McVay says it begins with the first statement in a “Welcome to Cumulus” manual given to new PDs and air talents. “’Our number one responsibility is to protect the license,’” he says, paraphrasing the frequently updated document’s opening line. “We’ve included what to do and not to do, along with the things the NAB suggests like not using emergency sirens in commercials, stunts or bits because a driver may be looking around for the source.” Midwest VP/Programming Jeff McCarthy says protecting the license takes advanced and ongoing training, particularly for new personalities. Simulating various scenarios can also prepare jocks for virtually any situation that might come up. “If you’re just starting out we might put you in a production studio in advance and allow you to do a show,” he says. “It’s going through what the values are of the company and the radio station. What are the things we expect in terms of the type of content you’re going to have on the air? Where is the line? That’s really important and a lot of times we blur it.” McVay points out that no matter how many eventualities you plan for, some you figure out the hard way. “One of the things in our booklet is the seven words you cannot say,” he says. “We recently had an air talent spell out one of the words, thinking that would be ok. So we had to file the proper paperwork and reprimand the talent – the poor kid just didn’t know. We didn’t suspend him but we gave him a warning. Since then, we’ve added that to our manual.” “A lot of this starts at the top,” says McCarthy. “If you go back to when radio had smaller operators who were much more hands-on, they were conscious of those rules and regulations. Now that it’s become much more corporate, less attention is being paid.” He adds that Midwest still has that focus. “[Owner] Duke Wright follows the laws of the FCC to the letter,” he says. “You don’t ever want to explain to him why we got a fine from the FCC.”

McVay says a refresher never hurts, as others’ mistakes can be learning opportunities. “We instruct our program directors to take people through it, and after Mr. Bones got in trouble, we certainly sent it around to everybody and asked every air talent to acknowledge that they’d read and understood it,” he says. The bottom line, says McCarthy, is everyone needs to be on the same page before anyone goes on the air. “If you had a car you paid $5 million for, would you just hand the keys over to someone and say, ‘I’ll see you in five hours?’” he asks. “This is what happens way too often with radio stations. ‘Oh, they’re just a part-timer.’ At some point that part-timer is driving that car. They should never be allowed to go on the air before being prepped. It really comes down to the goal of the PD to educate that person, especially if they haven’t had the experience or education in the business.” Reach McVay here and McCarthy here. –Jess Wright

Warner Bros./WEA’s Ryan Kinder puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to Birmingham’s WDXB and WZZK. The first time I heard myself on the radio, I was sitting in a car with my wife. We were about to go in the Kroger. We were both freaking out. I rolled down the window and yelled at the closest person to tell them I was on the radio. They came over and listened with us. My favorite people to travel with

are my manager Nick Garvin and my songwriting partner Luke Sheets. We’ve been buddies for so long and we know how to handle each other on extremely long road trips. I’d love to have dinner with Quincy Jones or the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. Quincy is the epitome of a music producer and musician. He’s one of the best, and I feel like he would have so many great stories. And Stevie Ray Vaughn is one of my favorite guitar players in the world. I would order wine and steaks. If Rob Thomas, Gavin DeGraw and John Mayer were melded together as one person and born in Alabama, you’d get a taste of my music. My last impulse buy was at a Guitar Center. We went in to buy miscellaneous gear and I ended up walking out with a brand new Telecaster. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is beaver hunting at midnight at my family’s farm. Beavers are normally not a nuisance unless they’re cutting off the water supply to whatever lake or stream the deer or turkey drink from. They prevent growth of the species by damming up the river or lake. And they tear up the woods by making their dam. I have to have protein powder, workout clothes and tennis shoes with me on the road. I have to work out to stay healthy. If I’m not healthy that means I have to cancel a show, which means my band aren’t getting paid and the people around me aren’t getting taken care of. If I’m sick, I’m letting everybody down. I enjoy having somebody care enough to ask me questions, so there are no least favorite interview questions. I’d like to be stuck in Seaside, FL because it’s one of the most magical places in the world. They filmed The Truman Show in Seaside.

Writers Rock That lady or gentleman in formal wear at tonight’s (11/2) 53rd Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards could have been one of Nashville’s top songwriters – or perhaps it was a member of the Secret Service. Trisha Yearwood was honored with the PRO’s Voice of Music Award, presented by former President Jimmy Carter, and celebrated with three tribute performances introduced by Justin Timberlake. Both are Yearwood’s personal friends. Lady Antebellum sang Yearwood’s “Walkaway Joe” while Reba performed “The Song Remembers When” and Garth Brooks’ daughter Allie Brooks sang “She’s In Love With The Boy.” Top winners included Ashley Gorley, Songwriter of the Year; Sam Hunt, Songwriter/Artist of the Year; “Leave The Night On” (written by Hunt and Josh Osborne, performed by Hunt), Song of the Year; and Warner/Chappell Music, Publisher of the Year. Logan’s Roadhouse CEO Sam Borgese was presented the Partners In Music Award, which recognizes an ASCAP licensee that has shown exceptional dedication in presenting ASCAP members’ music to the public. In total, ASCAP honored the writers and publishers behind 46 most-performed songs including songwriters Chris DeStefano, Brett James, Ben Hayslip, David Lee Murphy, Brad Paisley and Chris Tompkins. Artists attending included A Thousand Horses, Kelsea Ballerini, Lee Brice, Garth Brooks, Brothers Osborne, The Cadillac Three, Dan + Shay, Tyler Farr, Jewel, Maddie & Tae, Kip Moore, David Nail, Eric Paslay, Cassadee Pope, John Rich, Cole Swindell, the Swon Brothers and Lee Ann Womack. Top winners at last night’s (11/1) SESAC Nashville Music Awards included Cary Barlowe, Country Songwriter of the Year. Barlowe’s recent hits are Florida Georgia Line’s “Sun Daze” and Dustin Lynch’s “Where It’s At (Yep, Yep).” “Homegrown” (written by Zac Brown, Niko Moon and Wyatt Durrette) was named Country Song of the Year and Magic Mustang Music was awarded Publisher of the Year. Richard Leigh was presented the Songwriter Legacy Award and honored with Crystal Gayle’s and Reba’s performances of his classics “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” and “The Greatest Man I Never Knew,” respectively. Artists attending included Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott, Joe Nichols, Jerrod Niemann, Cole Swindell and Kelsea Ballerini. –Wendy Newcomer

joking around about things in the news and made it a song. I thought, ‘Why can’t we do that?’ And that was the year we sang ‘Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Kanye.’ From there it was a bottomless pit.”

Nash Nights Live’s Elaina Smith got Paisley to admit that in his dream collaboration with Silentó, he’s much more comfortable performing the “Stanky Leg” than the Whip/Nae Nae. Asked if artists inquire whether they will be the subject of jokes before the show, Underwood demurred, “People ask us in confidence.” “I do think it’s very admirable Blake went on Seth Meyers and said, ‘Bring it,’” Paisley said. “So we will. He and I had a

few conversations here and there. He’s not someone that’s concerned at all, honestly. It’s really refreshing.” WOGI/Pittsburgh’s Jeremy “Danger Frog” asked Underwood about touring with a baby, and she detailed modifications to her bus. “All the doors and drawers have magnetic locks so he doesn’t fall down the trash chute,” she said. Paisley actually liked that idea. “That would be very Star Wars,” he said. “You could even make the walls [close in].” Asked soon after if Paisley might be tapped for babysitting, Underwood answered quickly, “Probably not. Because he thinks it’s okay that the baby goes down the trash chute.” Tune in for more Brad and Carrie on ABC-TV Wednesday (11/4).

Chart Chat Congrats to Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, Matthew Hargis and the entire Republic Nashville promotion staff on landing this week’s No. 1 with “Anything Goes.” The song is the fourth chart-topper from their current album by the same title. Staying at BMLG (and throwing in UMGN, too), kudos to Kris Lamb and the Dot reps for scoring 40 adds on Maddie & Tae’s “Shut Up And Fish,” topping this week’s board in a tie with Keith Urban’s “Break On Me.” So kudos to Shane Allen and the Capitol crew as well!

Valory’s Thomas Rhett discusses his most influential music:1. Hank Williams: I can vividly remember being in my living room at the age of five singing every Hank Williams, Sr. song that ever existed with my dad. To this day every time I hear “Tear In My Beer” or “Your Cheatin’ Heart” or “Window Shopping,” I go back to that living room. He definitely influenced the melodic and songwriting structure of what I do today.

2. Rolling Stones, Vanderbilt Stadium, 1998: Besides seeing my dad play, it was the first concert I ever saw. Watching Mick Jagger run around onstage is when I first wanted to be an entertainer. From that point forward I wanted to be in front of a camera or in talent shows. I tried to be the center of attention at all of our family get-togethers.3. Eric Church: “These Boots,” “Two Pink Lines,” “Sinners Like Me” and the title song from Carolina are the reasons I ever wanted to write songs in the first place. I got to write with him last year. It’s pretty cool to be able to write with someone you’ve looked up to since you were 15 years old.4. ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s Rock: I was in a punk rock band in middle school because I was such a huge fan of The Ramones. Led Zeppelin was also one of my favorite bands. If I could go back in time and see any band, it would be them.5. The Allman Brothers: I’ve looked up to Warren Haynes and Gregg Allman my whole life. Even though I’m not a great guitar player, I wish I could play like them.• An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: I used to listen to classical music in college while I studied because someone said you retain more information when you listen to Mozart, but I’ve never “gotten” it. I respect orchestra members as individual artists but I’ve never gotten super-hyped about classical music.• An album you listened to incessantly: I have listened to Eric Church’s Carolina 600 times. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: When I was in junior high I was at Rocketown in Nashville every weekend watching scream-o metal bands. Me and Jaren Johnston from The Cadillac Three completely dorked out on the bus to that music the other night for about three hours.
