possible listener/population base. Since the average for meters in our marketplace is 2.3 per household, that’s likely around 103 homes. And the sampling of that demo is usually the lowest percentile of index for Nielsen (usually between 70 and 80%), so those households/meters are usually weighted significantly. “While [WLHK/Indianapolis PD] Fritz Moser spoke briefly about meters and some heavy usage, I felt like it was important for everyone to be aware of the math in my market and in most others before we draw any drastic conclusions on the viability of the format. That’s the “behind the curtain” stuff that rarely seems to get talked about much anymore. I know we can’t sample every-one, but really?” Emmis WLHK/Indianapolis PD Fritz Moser: “Agreed. With the sample size and decreasing PUMM [People Using Measured Media], it has become a game of inch-es. That’s where one or two meters makes all the difference. I’m sure getting and keeping qualified meter holders is a challenge but if they aren’t helping radio measurement, boot ‘em out sooner to keep the panel active. I’m a simpleton, I know. “Jon had a great point that the 18-34 decline isn’t just in a couple markets. However, comparing year to year is going to be more defining. We’ve noticed some cyclical swings during spring break, summer and Christmas. When our station is in front of 30,000 concert-goers during summer months we tend to do a little better, especially in younger demos. Looking at current Media Monitors data here, it appears the new Classic Hip-Hop station in our market will shake this demo up a bit as has been the trend in other markets.” iHeartMedia KWNR/Las Vegas PD JoJo Turnbeaugh: “Don’t get me started on the sample size here in Las Vegas. One meter in the Country life group is the difference be-tween hero and zero. There are about 1,000 meters for more than 45 radio stations. The panelists also are told that the meters are to monitor their media usage; they have no idea it’s for radio. So how many of those 1000 panelists are actually heavy radio users? We have been waiting for two years to see the Country P1s get more meters and it looks like – as of late – that it might be happening right now. In the last month we have seen the best meter count for the Country format in the last two years. Fingers crossed.”

In response, Miller points out the 18-34 data came from a nationwide sample of almost 20,000 panelists across 48 markets – more than sufficient to identify trends nationally. Look for a more in-depth examination of PPM sample size in an upcoming issue. In the meantime, share your own feedback here.

Chart Chat Congrats to Luke Bryan, Royce Risser, Shane Allen, Katie Dean and the entire Capitol promotion staff on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “I See You.” Notably, the song is the sixth chart-topper from Bryan’s Crash My Party, setting a new record for No. 1s from one album. Kudos are also extended to Norbert Nix and the Columbia team for landing 61 adds for Kenny Chesney w/Grace Potter’s “Wild Child,” topping this week’s board.

OFF THE RECORD: AAROn WATsOnBig Label/Thirty Tigers’ Aaron Watson puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I listened to KGNC/Amarillo when I was growing up, but my dad had control of the radio so we listened to the Oldies station non-stop. I loved it. That’s timeless music, great musicians and well-crafted songs. Dad had a cleaning business and I can still see that little transistor radio we took with us wherever we were cleaning. My dad’s record collection is fantastic. Having all that vinyl at my fin-

gertips was fun. There was Willie and Waylon, The Beatles, Buck Owens and Frank Sinatra – all these different flavors. My mom always encouraged me to sing at church. Little did I know as I was growing up, I was kind of taking singing lessons. I learned to carry a tune without an instrument. That’s a lost art these days. Singing a cappella in church gave me the ability to hear it and sing it. My kids are all into music. Jake is 8, Jack is 7 and little sister Jolie Kate is 5. Jake is into The Beatles and he knows every song. Jolie Kate and I dance to Frank Sinatra every night before she goes to bed. And Jack wrote me a song so I could sing it for the whole wide world to make the family money. The first time I was played on the radio, it was this little station in Abilene that no longer exists. I made a CD that was in-credibly average. The guy at the station would put in my song to fill time. Now, it may be a four-minute song, and there may only be a minute and a half of time there, but he’d play a minute and a half of it and then just fade out and go into a commercial. With my new album The Underdog, we focused on songwriting, lyrical integrity, melody, music. Everyone talks about the ‘new format.’ Well I’m here to do my thing. I told [producer] Keith Stegall I wanted to make the best record in country music and he didn’t even chuckle. He said, “Let’s do it.” I wasn’t being arrogant, I was being confident. It’s me pushing myself. Three years ago I tore a page out of the SkyMall catalog as a hint for my wife. All I wanted for Christmas was a record player that burns your record to CD. Christmas came and no re-cord player. Last year I made a big deal out of it. I’m still waiting. Maybe if you print this I’ll get a SkyMall record player next year.Ed. Note: Sadly, after this interview SkyMall filed for bankruptcy. There’s always Target, Mrs. Watson.

Church In The Lurch “If you’ve seen this show somewhere on our tour so far, you’re probably wondering what the hell is going on,” said EMI/Nash-ville’s Eric Church to open Saturday’s (1/31) The Outsiders World Tour stop in Salt Lake City. “So am I.” Church’s entire band and crew were hit with the flu, but he was feeling fine and decided to go on without them. “Every-one was wearing SARS masks backstage,” says KEGA PD Jon Watkins of his visit to the meet-and-greet. KSOP PD Deb Turpin says she was excited when Church broke the news to them back-stage: “I thought, ‘Nobody else is ever going to get this show.” Adds KBUL PD Shawn Stevens, “Eric told us, ‘I have no idea what’s about to take place ... however it turns out, it turns out.’” It seems it turned out just fine. “It was the best show,” says Watkins. “He came out with a little extra fire in his belly.” Ste-vens agrees, calling it “the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen. He just played his heart out. I mean we’ve all seen intimate performances, but this was like having Eric Church in your living room with 15,000 of your closest friends.” “The comments from our listeners are still coming in, and they’re phenomenal,” Turpin says. “He created a lot of believers here.” She says the buzz is so big that people who weren’t there are asking if they can get tickets to the make-up show Church is coming back for May 25. Even acoustic, Church didn’t skimp on the tunes, playing a full 90-minute set. “If he hadn’t said he was coming back, nobody would have been throwing a fit,” says Stevens. “It’s just a bonus that he’s coming back.” All three programmers came away impressed. “Not everyone can go up onstage by themselves and just take charge, but he owned it,” Watkins says. Stevens says, “He gained a lot of respect. It would have been really easy to cancel that show. The majority of people would have.” Turpin sums, “It just goes to show you what a class act he is.” See how Church opened the show here. Reach Watkins here, Stevens here and Turpin here. –Jess Wright

Arista’s The Swon Brothers’ Colton and Zach discuss their most influential music.1. The Eagles: Colton: Their records never get boring. They’re so versatile, from “Life In The Fast Lane” to “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” 2. The Eagles in concert, 2013: Zach: These guys are well into their sixties now and still rocking. We want to

be able to tour for 40 years and still pack arenas with timeless songs. 3. How Great Thou Art: Colton: Growing up, we always heard our mom singing that song. She’s four foot nothing and has a big powerhouse voice. Hearing mom sing that is the best thing in the world.4. Travis Tritt, T-R-O-U-B-L-E: Zach: It was the first CD I ever bought with my own money. I wore that thing out until you couldn’t get any musical sound to come out of it. It’s full circle too, because he is partly responsible for getting The Eagles back together when he remade “Take It Easy.” 5. George Jones: Colton: Every time I get on a plane I turn on George Jones. It’s very therapeutic. He’s one of the greatest voices in country music. •A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Colton: I’ve never listened to an entire Kiss record. Zach: I like The Beatles but I’ve never listened to an entire record. I feel bad about that. It’s on my list of things to do.•An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Colton: I don’t get the “screamo” music. I do understand it takes a lot to scream every night and still have a voice. I don’t know how people do it. •An album you listened to incessantly: Zach: I played Little Texas’ Greatest Hits. Those harmonies were great. We got to write with Tim Rushlow, who was the lead singer. It was cool to pick his brain.•One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Zach: Kings Of Leon’s “Comeback Story.” You get drawn in by the peaceful melody. The lyrics are the sim-plest words you’ve ever heard but really clever. •Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Colton: Daft Punk will make you want to dance – and I don’t like to dance. Zach: Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA.” Every time that guitar kicks off, I get in a good mood.

40, I’ve been lucky to have been in the same building with [WUSY] US101 in Chattanooga, [WDXB] the Bull in Birmingham and [WFUS] US103.5 here in Tampa. Some of the people I consider mentors and great friends are great Country programmers like Clay Hunnicutt, Doug Hammond, Tom Hanrahan and Travis Daily. Michael Bryan at WSIX/Nashville, who made this transition a couple of years ago, is my lifelong best friend. All of those people and stations have molded me along the way and helped prepare me for this. How long have you known Michael? He’s from Greenville, TN and I’m from Erwin, TN and they’re side by side. His dad ran the AM station in Greenville and my dad ran the one in Erwin. I must’ve done my first board shift at seven and I’m sure he did his at seven or younger, so we were at the radio station from the time we could walk. In high school Michael and I both worked on the radio as teenagers and would talk all night on the hotlines while we were doing our shows, just dreaming about where we wanted to be one day. We stayed close through college and later he was the best man at my wedding. So having my best friend go through this and have success with WSIX is great. There’s been an influx of Top 40 programmers to Country in recent years. Why is that and is there an ad-vantage to having that background? Country has become so mainstream that it’s just not that big of a stretch. It’s certainly not as much of a leap as it would’ve been 20 years ago. And Michael, [CBS Radio’s] Rob Morris and Jeff Kapugi and myself all really respect the format and appreciate all that comes with it. And Country is really appealing. I happen to be in a situation where I get to do it without giving up Top 40 since I’m also the Program Director of one of the biggest Top 40 stations in America with Hot 99.5 in D.C. It’s really the best of both worlds. Why is Country so appealing? The loyalty is remarkable. Fans are super loyal to artists and the artists are just as loyal to the fans. I’ve been part of Country meet-and-greets over the years and the way the artists treat their fans is just amazing. I remember going to one of the Zac Brown Band’s eat-and-greets and thinking, “This is unreal.” And it’s all the artists. There are certainly some Top 40 acts that do that, you can’t say that about the format. And there’s the obvious stuff

(continued from page 1)Chuck’s Wagon: Meet WPOC’s New PD

like Country being family-friendly and patriotic. That aspect of it makes it really special to me and something I really love. And there are Top 40 stations that do a lot to give back to their community, but it’s nothing like what the Country format does. Take how the format comes together as one big family and raises money for St. Jude. I can remember standing out in the freezing rain helping [afternooner] Dex at US101 in Chattanooga collect change for St. Jude and seeing a long line of cars drive through with fans of the station donating their time and their money. The Country format, radio, artists and fans all just come together and help their neighbor and that’s awesome. Will you be based in Baltimore or Washington? Both and that will depend on where I’m most needed on any given day. I want to be flexible and living in a place that’s between the two. If I need to spend half a day in one and half a day in the other, then great. I’m going to have two offices, so we’ll have to figure out organizational things like meetings. But these radio stations are both monsters and are very important to me and to the company. So I’ll be wherever I’m most needed. What are your goals this year? The professional goals are pretty obvious in that we want to keep WPOC in the top position and grow our lead. I want to develop the strongest possible relationship with my team and to be the leader that they expect and deserve. And there’s a whole new world of people to get to know. I know that all the people in Nashville are great to work with, so I’m excited to get to know them. Otherwise it’s all about relationship-building, asking a lot of questions, figuring out what I don’t know and getting rolling as quickly as possible. Personally, my wife and I have a three-year-old boy who I feel like runs on jet fuel and a baby girl due in May. And we’re selling a house, buying a house, and moving across the country. There’s a lot of excitement for my new job, but the goal is to not let that get in the way of what’s most important. One of my favorite quotes is “No amount of success in the office can justify a failure in the home.” So I want to try to be true to that and make sure I’m taking care of the home front through it all. Welcome Chuck to the format here. –Russ Penuell
