Diversity week
3rd – 7th July 2017
During the week beginning the 3rd July, Oaks Park will be celebrating school
diversity week. This includes diversity in ethnicity, background, appearance,
sexuality (LGBT+) and gender. We will be celebrating to show students at Oaks
Park that we have a united front and are all accepting of the uniqueness and
differences of all our pupils; the week will involve pupils taking part in tutor time
workshops, assemblies and a decorate your form door competition.
We would also like to invite all students to take part in celebrating school
diversity week on Friday 7th July by wearing any pattern, print or coloured tie,
tights or socks or all three! Teachers are also going to participate. Come on do
your bit to celebrate what makes you, you, and stand out with crazy tights, tie or
socks : )

CEIAG News Alumni News:
It is always great to hear back from ex-students of Oaks Park and the many successes that they are having
after leaving our school. Tasqeen left Oaks Park in 2012 and has gone onto have a very successful career
in the Sciences. Please read her story below: “My journey since leaving OPHS: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biochemistry, followed by Master of Science (MSc) in Cancer &
Molecular Pathology and Genomics, now leading up to working in the Civil Service in science policy. I was always captivated by
scientific concepts but it was most definitely my year 9 science classes with Mr Douglas that made me certain that science was
the path I should pursue. I studied a Biochemistry degree at Queen Mary University of London,
as I always had a deep interest in both Biology and Chemistry. During my degree, I undertook
a laboratory research project in a Biotechnology company about cancer chemotherapy. This
ignited my passion for cancer research which inspired me to study an MSc in Cancer & Molec-
ular Pathology and Genomics at Bart’s Cancer Institute. Throughout my BSc and MSc, I was
keen to develop my work experience portfolio in order to strengthen my communication skills
(which are hugely important in the working world!) and to help me decide what kind of career
to pursue. So, I secured placements at the British Petroleum headquarters, Pfizer (global
pharmaceutical company) and as a research assistant for a psychology PhD stu-dent. I also worked as a radio presenter and a university student ambassador, helping school
students like you, with their university options – which was a lot of fun!
Following my MSc, I was keen to work in an environment that would enable me to apply my
scientific skills to support the delivery of exciting, large-scale and impactful work
that would drive change and contribute to the lives of UK citizens. The perfect
opportunity came along when I spotted the Science Fast Stream in the Civil Service
and I have now secured a position for this job - which I’m really excited about! I’ll
have the unique opportunity to work in different government departments
including the Department of Health, where I could be supporting the Chief Scientific Advisor with various
science projects, all the way to the Department for International Development, working on global concerns like
malaria.
If you’re interested in science, remember that medicine is not the only career option! There’s a world of opportunities out there
– you just have to do your research! Whether it’s taking part in a science competition, or getting exposure to a school or hospi-
tal laboratory, there are a number of ways to get started on building your future scientific career”

Connect 4 Update
Mr. Bissett Maths Department
The ninth annual Connect 4 tournament is over! It's an Alpha clean sweep this year, as Vincent
Young dominated qualifying and the knockout tournament to become the first player ever to win both
sections of the competition. The final was well balanced, but Vincent's speedy style with sharp defences
was too much for the circumspect and careful Omar Noori. It was a tournament where practice made perfect
and the players who had honed their skills saw the rewards. Both defeated semi finalists put up admirable
performances, and Sakir Bhuiyan's defeat of Arsh Bashir in the third place playoff could have been a final in
itself.
Congratulations to all players, and especially to Alpha House, whose highest previous best in Connect 4 was
third place in 2014.
