ED’S NOTE

Since moving to Cape Town I have learnt that winter is not just a few weeks affair, as it was when I was living in Durban. Oh how embarrased I am to think of how much I used to complain. Little did I know about the true meaning of winter (Europeans will probably sniff at this statement however). As I type this it is nearing the end of July and winter is holding on for dear life. So we might as well make the most of it. Once again we’ve included recipes, restaurants, experiences, book ideas and even a jewellery line that has the most beautiful winter range.

This month, yet again, we’re all about keeping warm - starting mostly with our bellies.

I wish you all a beautiful month.

Lastly, if you want to get involved in Flat White Magazine, through articles or advertising, please contact me. We’d love to welcome you to the Flat White family!

With love, laughter and a lot of coffee.Christinewww.flatwhiteconcepts.com

So you’re a coffee lover? You’ve tried most of the top coffee brands in South Africa, have your view on what’s good and what’s not, where the best coffee shops are and what’s the best on their menu... But have you tried to roaSt your own coffee yet? Commercially, you’d need a roasting drum set very specifically to a set time and temperature, but for home roast-ing, you can literally do it on the hob, or on the braai, just like the Ethiopians do. RYO Coffee is South Africa’s first dedicated green Micro lot distributor and we’re here to help you make amazing coffee, yourselves. You can find most required tools on our site (beans, grinder, measuring spoons, French Press), and everything else is probably already in your kitchen (pan / pot, stove, sieve), as well as a host of information to do with the roasting, grind-ing and brewing of your coffee, and some other interesting facts that you may not know.

RED PEPPER, KIDNEY BEAN AND TOMATO SOUP

Ingredients• Oil• Garlic• 1 big onion diced• 2 red bell peppers diced (can add a small red chilli or 2)• 400g red kidney beans (drained) (I use double)• 750ml tomato juice• 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce• Salt & pepper• Fresh coriander leaves• Plain yogurt

Method1. Sauté onions & garlic.2. Add red peppers (& chilli), sauté until soft3. Add rest of ingredients (except coriander &

yogurt) cook for 20 min.4. Blend fine5. Serve and garnish

Serve with a bit of plain yogurt and fresh cori-ander leaves. They complement the spiciness wonderfully and the coriander leaves give an extra delicious dimension to the dish. It is also a good idea to serve the soup with warm bread and real butter.

a life made easy with u cook

Lately ‘U Cook’ kept popping up all over my twitter timeline, with people swearing by this company and their amazing food. So I signed up for a week to try them out and I have to say... I’m impressed.

So what is U Cook? U Cook takes the hassle out of cooking. By signing up you receive three meals for the week. The box includes all the in-gredients, packaged separately for ease of use as well as easy to follow recipe instructions. All the recipes have been created from a number of top chefs, including the winner of the Italian Masterchef TV series Lapo Magni as well as Nic Tonglet who has worked at both the award win-ning Test Kitchen and Pot Luck Club.

You get to choose between three types of dish-es: Vegetarian, Rustic and Low Carb. I went for the Low Carb, and this is what I got:

Grilled Cape Salmon with Herbed Beans, Peas and Cherry Tomatoes: This was amazing. They didn’t have salmon so we got yellowtail instead but they were kind enough to let us know and to inform us of the change in cooking time. What surprised me most about this dish was how un-complicated it was and how easy it was to make vegetables taste so good.

Herb Crusted Lamb Chops With Mint Peas and Tahini Yoghurt: I have a confession - this was my first time cooking lamb chops. It was easy and delicious. Also, I think tahini yoghurt is my new best thing.

Chicken Breast Al Limone With Flash Roasted Sesame Beans: This was the softest chicken I’ve ever made, which goes to show what cooking in wine can do (drink it, cook with it, it’s all good in my books).

These were all very simple and yet elegant dishes that made me feel and look like a proper chef. Also, with all the ingredients ready it took out all the preparation time, and my food was ready in no time.

Not only can you order meals through them but you can also shop at their online shop. The sec-tions for this are: Bakery, Biltong, Cellar, Choco-late, Coffee, Juice, Pesto and Salts.

If you’re looking for a way to eat hearty, healthy meals without the stress than this is the place to go! Let’s support this amazing local company.

craft burger bar82 regent road, sea point

www.craftburgerbar.co.za

A place that let’s you build your own burger? Well obviously that peaked my interest! I love nothing more than a good juicy burger and I loved the idea of building my own. The premise is simple - you get a sheet and a pen and all you have to do is tick what you want. Step 1 - 4 all falls under the R49 price and after that you sim-ply add on for whatever extras you would like (price dependant on what you choose). You can go as simple or as crazy as you want!

The hardest part comes in the choosing, of course, and we sat there for ages, our pens dan-gling near all the choices, until we finally decid-ed. I chose a beef burger with lettuce, tomato, fried onions, blue cheese, avocado, basil pesto and deep fried yams on the side. Warren went for a similar burger, but chose bacon instead of the pesto and chips instead of the yams. We were both very happy with our choices and ea-gerly devoured them.

At the moment they are featuring La Capra wines

by Fairview, and I chose the delicious Cabernet Sauvignon, while Warren went for the Merlot. I was easily swayed by the description ‘Vibrant, deep and red, like a gypsy’s kiss’.

The place itself is wonderfully vibrant and cosy. It’s small and ambient and easy to spend a good few hours over a few glasses of wine. Or beer, if you’re more that way inclined, as their craft beer selection is extensive.

If you don’t want to go the ‘build your own’ route then they also have a wide variety of burgers to choose from. Personally, however, I would rec-ommend that you make your own - it’s a great little adventure!

A lovely evening and I’ll definitely be back. Espe-cially for those deep fried yams!

Byblos The new coffee kid on the block

As a super fan of Mischu I was excited when I discov-ered he had opened up a new coffee shop with his wife and I rushed over to check it out. Situated in The Palms shopping centre in Woodstock it made find-ing parking a dream, which is always my number one concern when visiting that area. Parking sorted, we made our way to the shop.

Byblos, a city in Lebanon, holds a special place in the owners heart. It’s his favourite city and it’s where he started his first business, so it was important that he named his new shop in honour of where it all began.

They serve a wide variety of coffees, using their fa-mous Isabella Blend as well as the Palms Blend, and I was excited to enjoy a cup. We sat down on the sofa and watched as the friendly barista’s made our Flat White’s. Beautiful. Once again, this coffee did not dis-appoint, and to me is still one of the best coffees in Cape Town. These guys sure know what they are do-ing.

Another great reason to visit is that they are one of the few shops that have Yerba maté on their menu. Yerba maté is a natural antioxidant-rich tea which helps to increase the metabolism, curb the appetite, improve focus and increase energy levels.

So my idea is simple: visit Byblos every morning and start the day off with a Yerba maté and a Flat White. Day sorted!

TASTEIt’s our Winter Warmer edition and I was searching for a place to go that fit the description of ‘warmth’ and ‘food’. My twitter response was rife with comments such as ‘The Wild Fig OF COURSE’ or ‘Have you tried The Wild Fig? They have a fireplace’. When I told that I had not been I could tell that people were unimpressed. So I quickly made a booking for Warren and I. It seems we just discovered Cape Town’s best kept secret!

The day we went was deceivingly beautiful outside. The blue skies told us lies while the wind blew cold air around us. When we arrived I was im-mediately blown away by the view, with the mountain looming down over the restaurant while being surrounded by a field of green. It took us ages to actually get inside because we kept stopping to take photos. It’s obvious that this is a place that would also be amazing in the summer. However, summer it was not, and so we made our way inside and plonked ourselves at a table near the fireplace.

The restaurant is far bigger than I had imagined and easily caters for a wide variety of party sizes, from small intimate tables to large groups for func-tions, events and conferences. I already have my eye on this place for my Christmas party this year.

We started off with a glass of The Wild Fig Pinotage each and ordered the Charcuterie Platter to share. This came with a selection of prosciutto, cop-pa, choriza, Italian sausage, Spanish salami, mini gherkins, tomato chutney and wild garlic Boerenkaas, with grilled ciabatta on the side. What a great way to start!

For the mains I went for the Bacon and Egg Salad which came with crispy fried bacon, garlic croutons, avocado, baby peas and a soft boiled egg, topped with a spring onion and parsley dressing. I overheard the two la-dies at a table next to me order the same thing so this was obviously a popular choice. The girls and I had it right - this salad was amazing. Warren went for the special - a rib eye steak with poached egg, roast pota-toes, vine tomatoes and seasonal vegetables.

We were so full that we couldn’t even look at the dessert menu (but I had a sneaky glance online and I’m thinking I need to go back. I saw the words ‘Chocolate Fondant’).

Adjacent to the restaurant lies their bar ‘Annies Arms’, a beautiful non-smoking venue with a huge variety of wines by the glass, bar snacks, craft beers and single malt whiskies.

What a lovely afternoon we had and what a gem we found. If you’re looking for a place to keep you warm then this is the place to be!

books to cuddle up to this winterWe asked you what books you are cuddling up to this winter, and here’s what you had to say.

TALeS OF A FeMALe NOMAd: LiviNG AT LARGe iN THe WORLdBY RiTA GOLdeN GeLMANTales of a Female Nomad is the story of Rita Golden Gelman, an or-dinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of forty-eight, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in L.A. to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986 she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Rita’s example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults.

THe LiveS OF TAO (TAO #1)BY WeSLeY CHuWhen out-of-shape IT technician Roen woke up and started hearing voices in his head, he naturally assumed he was losing it. He wasn’t. He now has a passenger in his brain – an ancient alien life-form called Tao, whose race crash-landed on Earth before the first fish crawled out of the oceans. Now split into two opposing factions – the peace-loving, but under-represented Prophus, and the savage, powerful Genjix – the aliens have been in a state of civil war for centuries. Both sides are searching for a way off-planet, and the Genjix will sacrifice the entire human race, if that’s what it takes. Meanwhile, Roen is having to train to be the ultimate secret agent. How to Write Children’s Fiction - A fun workshop to inspire the uninspired Price: R320.00

date: 5 September 2015, 2 - 5pm

venue: I Love My Laundry, 50 Buitenkant Street, East City, Cape Town. What you get: Notebook, pen, a copy of Christine’s children’s book, ‘Goblins’ Guild’, notes to take home, and a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. (Should you want more: the venue hosts a delicious selection of coffees, wines, cookies and Dim Sum). Who should attend: This is a workshop for the uninspired. Three hours to let your creativity flow and to feel motivated by like-minded individuals. The workshop is aimed at anyone who is interested in learning how to write children’s fiction – whether for their own children or with the aim of becoming published. The idea of the workshop is to simply get you to start writing and to restore faith in your creative writing skills. What you will do: The workshop will help you to unleash your creative side through fun exercises (and don’t worry – you do NOT have to share these with anyone). By the end of the workshop we are hoping you walk away with a better understanding of what children want to read and how you can write it. Workshop host: Christine is a Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Writer at Flat White Concepts. She has self-published a children’s book (Goblins’ Guild) and is in the process of writing and publishing the rest of the series. She doesn’t claim to be an expert (far from it in fact) but believes strongly in the power of motivation through practice and experience. Seats: The group is limited to 10 people. Please email [email protected] to secure your booking, which will be confirmed on receipt of payment. Please note that all payments are non-refundable.

FiNe ART PHOTOGRAPHY

Doing only Fine Art Photography has been a dream for me ever since my years at Technikon (more than 10 years ago now!) But I only started pursuing this dream full time about a year and a half ago. I believe photography is such an amaz-ing medium and can be used in so many more applications than the standard commercial uses. To me, photography is my way of communicat-ing, of telling stories and sharing my ideas and concepts with others, and it is an amazing tool when it comes to creating balanced, striking and serene interiors!

THe PROduCTS

My body of work consists of landscapes, still lives and conceptual portraits, and all of these different types of images are then applied to a range of products. Landscapes and still lives are printed as custom photographic wallpapers and large prints, ideal for decorating a home or office space. The conceptual portraits are my 'stories', an image with a figure in that is more about the concept or feeling than it is about the person in it (hence the 'characters' identities are often hid-den partially from the audience). My products include the 'Forest in my Heart' jewellery range, fine art cushions, purses, notebooks, gift cards and postcards, all featuring my original photog-raphy. The jewellery range specifically is dedicat-ed to my love of all things natural and contains images of trees, plants and animals found here in Nature's Valley, where I live.

PHOTOGRAPHY vS PROduCTS

I have thankfully left 'taking photographs' behind

me! Even though this is an invaluable use and application for photography, it never really felt like a good fit for me. I use photography as my medium, a way to create images and tell stories, much as a painter, illustrator or writer would use their chosen mediums to express themselves.

MOST POPuLAR PieCe

Oh wow, such a difficult question! My image 'Un-tethered' has sold the most prints (and is soon to be a wallpaper!), people are fond of the cushions with the trees on and I have received excellent feedback on the 'Forest in my Heart' jewellery range!

iNSPiRATiON

I am greatly inspired my nature, the sea, the forest in my back yard, the wild bush buck I am lucky enough to see almost every day. And also personal experiences, struggles and generally trying to make sense of the world we live in.

I recently launched a new project with my hus-band through the e-commerce site, Shopstar.

They have been amazing to work with and the whole process has been so incredibly easy. I chatted to the team...

What is Shopstar?

Shopstar is a cloud-based e-commerce platform. It allows you to create and manage your own on-line shop. In fact, Shopstar gives you the tools to set up and manage your entire website. The idea came from Europe where online shop-ping has been around for quite some time. The Shopstar development started at the end of 2012, the first Beta version went live six months later. At Shopstar our focus is not to just blindly develop technology. As our client base grows we are spending more and more time looking at how our merchants operate in the physical and virtual space.

By taking this approach we are developing sys-tems which assist our merchants on various lev-els and are helping them with the implementa-tion of processes which structure and optimise their workflow. At the end of the day technology only optimises what we do. This approach has al-ready allowed us to see many of our clients dou-ble and triple their turn-over in the last months. Are there specific brands that you sell or can anyone get involved?

Anyone can get involved and set up shop on Shopstar, but we are particularly keen on up and coming brands and entrepreneurs in the creative industry. Shopstars target audience are SMEs who sell products. Most of Shopstars clients are in the design sector, fashion, jewellery, leather goods, furniture, etc.

Clients include:• Dear Rae • Super • Matblac • Clementina van der Walt • KIN • Ilundi • Research Unit • Bamboo Revolution • Kamers volGeskenke • Vin d’Easel do people need to be a designer to create a website and can you use your own domain?

No, the platform is designed to allow anyone to create and manage their own shop – without a designer or coding experience. But we offer ad-vice where necessary and users can sit in our stu-dio to work on their shop. This way communica-tion is very quick and easy. And yes, you can add your custom domain. What's your favourite Cape Town coffee spot?

We LOVE coffee and although we are based in Kloof Street, we really like Haas in Buitenkant and Bean There. We also choose different hot coffee shops for our monthly #Echats. We also love cheesecake. Visit them on www.shopstar.co.za

I attended the Brush Lettering Course

When I heard that Astrid from Schwarzie® was hosting a Brush Lettering Workshop I knew I had to go. The Schwarzie® sisters are a very creative and wonderful duo and I knew that this would be something worth doing. Held at I Love My Laundry in Buitenkant Street it was sure to be an afternoon of creative inspiration.

And it was.

10 of us showed up to take part in their first workshop and the whole event went so well that they’ve already opened up another work-shop for August and one for September.

Everyone received a starter pack including pa-per and ink and we were shown how to find our own flair when it came to our writing style. It was a great opportunity to take a break from the rest of the world and spend some time with like-minded individuals who simply wanted to let loose and have some fun.

I walked away with a better understanding and appreciation for brush lettering.

Thanks Astrid!

upcoming event details:

date: 15 August & 19 September, 2 - 5pm

included: A beautiful starter pack to take home filled with your very own clip board, the perfect brush to get you started, paper, ink, pencil, and a free coffee voucher to use on the day of the workshop. A few extra bits are included but Sch! We’re keeping that a surprise!

What to bring: One or more of your favorite phrases to turn into a brush lettered piece dur-ing the workshop. Oh and of course, even the ti-niest bit of creative fuel and excitement couldn’t hurt. P.S If you know how to say the alphabet you’re going to be just fine, so in other words no prior experience at lettering necessary.

Tickets: Only 10 tickets available. Book by 8 Au-gust 2015 to secure your spot and starter pack. A confirmation email will be sent securing your spot once payment has been made.

CHOCOLATe CHOCOLATe CHOCOLATeThe Winelands Chocolate Festival took place over the weekend of the 25th and 26th July at the beautiful Lourensford Wine Estate in Som-erset West. The weather was gorgeous and it made for a wonderful afternoon. A lot of people complained afterwards about the lack of space inside but as a festival in its first year running I can only see it getting better and better. The lack of space just meant that too many eager people had come to try the chocolate!

Chocolate! Boy did we try a lot. The exhibitors on the day were:Alexander Avery• Beyers Chocolate• Chocolat Frey• CocoaFair• Felchlin Chocolate (at von Geusau)• JP Fortain Chocolates

• Gayleen’s Decadence• Honest Chocolates• Huguenot Fine Chocolates• La Chocolaterie Rococo• LINDT• Monate Chocolates• My Sugar• Rococoa• Tony Harper Chocolates• von Geusau Fine Chocolates• VP Truffles

After sampling the chocolate, we bought our-selves some food and a bottle of champagne and went out onto the grass to enjoy. We had a wonderful afternoon.

The organisers have been incredibly respon-sive to all the feedback and I’m personally looking forward to a bigger and better festival next year. You’ll never keep me away from the chocolate.

A diNNeR ANd MOvie dATe WiTH A diFFeReNCe!

I absolutely love The Twelve Apostles, and when I found out that they had a Dinner and Movie night as part of their winter special I knew I had to visit! What a special evening it turned out to be.

One word of advice - go hungry! The evening be-gan at their beautiful Azure Restaurant (the views!) where we were treated to a glass of champagne, fol-lowed by a three course dinner. I chose the Roasted Tomato Soup starter with ricotta dumplings, followed by the Salmon which came with smoked mussels tempura, creamed fennel, burnt shallots, pickled dai-kon, bok choy and dashi jus. Warren chose the Baby Calamari Risotto starter which came with cauliflower, pearl barley and sultana pureé, and for his main he chose similar to me but with tuna instead of salmon. The food was all beautifully presented and delicious - hats off to the chef. We had four desserts to choose from but we decided to save space for our movie treats instead.

At 8.30pm we made our way to the cinema, a plush little 16-seater, and sat down to enjoy our movie - ‘The Reader’. Brilliant movie enjoyed with a box of popcorn and a big chocolate milkshake each. Like I said, go hungry!

To book, visit www.12apostleshotel.com, call 021 - 437 9029 or email [email protected] you will get a full view of the movie schedule to choose from. It really is a wonderful experience.

Enjoy date night with a difference!

Pendant size: 30mm, comes on a 68cm fine silver chain.‘Forest in my Heart’ jewellery range was developed as my little contribution to wearable art. A small piece of Nature that we can wear and have close to us at all times. All the jewellery pieces contain original images taken of the natural elements of my home and set with resin in nickel free plated sil-ver. Jewellery pieces are handmade in our workshop in Nature’s Valley. And in the spirit of true grati-tude a percentage of all jewellery sales are donated to the Nature’s Valley Trust in aid of conservation of my beautiful home.
