Thank you to all the staff and parents who worked tirelessly all day to ensure the day was a success. A huge thank you to Ross Bailey and Sam Robinson for organising the sports day – the preparation for days such as this is immense.

If your child is showing any signs of being unwell we would appreciate you keeping them at home until they are fully recovered. In case of gastro, children need to be clear of symptoms for 24 hours before they return to school. SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S REPORT At this week’s School Council meeting, the Principal of Sandringham Secondary College, Allen McAuliffe, provided an update on the proposed plans for the College. He informed Council that the College is working towards establishing a new vision and accompanying long term strategy, including with regard to developing its science and sports learning. He confirmed that the current plan is for the Beaumaris campus to remain as a year 7-10 campus (although no year 7 will be offered in 2014), with future options for VCE years. The College anticipates making further announcements as their plans develop and become more certain towards the end of this year. Council also discussed the proposed removal by the Department of the old year 3 portable classroom and old toilet block between the oval and basketball courts. The removals are likely to occur in the upcoming school holidays. Staff are implementing a plan to smoothly transition the affected year 3 students to a suitable classroom before the end of term, with a priority of minimising any impacts on students. The school is engaging students, parents and the community to inform them about these changes. The school is also investigating options for making the best use of the spaces once these buildings are removed. Council approved the school’s new Sustainability Policy and updated Religious Instruction Policy. These policies will be available on the school’s website together with other policies of our school. LEVEL LOW DOWN Prep

On Tuesday we were visited by Paul, John and ‘Grumpy Mick’ – the fire fighters from the Mentone Fire Brigade. They talked about what an ‘emergency’ was and the importance of ringing 000 in an emergency only. We learned to ‘Crawl down low and …go, go go’ in the case of a fire and our Preps have been practising it as a part of ‘dramatic play’ during investigations. Please discuss your ‘home’ fire plan with your children and help them remember their full address and home or mobile phone number. All Preps have learned what action to take if we have a fire emergency at school so please ask them to tell you all about that. Don’t forget our excursion to Scienceworks this coming Monday – 26th August. Please make sure your child is here in their classroom at 8.30 as we will be departing at 8.40 SHARP.

Year One The Year 1’s have had a BUSY week! We have been practising our subtraction and data collection skills by making our own graphs, playing subtraction bingo and race to zero. We have also been writing our very own subtraction stories. Here are some that you might like to work out at home; I had 15 bananas and my sister ate 10. How many bananas did I have all together? I had 25 balloons and 2 went POP! How many balloons did I have all together? (By Sarah, 1B) I had $99.00 and I spent $86.00. How much money did I have left? (By Archie B, 1B) We have also started investigating Procedural texts, which are texts that tell you how to make or do something. Our spelling focus for this week was words with the “Qu” blend such as, Queen, Quick and Quack.

Year Two The year 2’s have been busy learning lots about money! We have been adding money, working out change, playing banking games, building houses and working out the cost and even looking at exchange rates! The students have loved working on their money skills. We have encouraged them to continue working on their change skills at home when shopping with mum and dad.

During investigations, 1GP

practised their fine motor

skills as they designed and

made their own T shirts.

Year Three Parent experts talk about Design, creativity and technology Year 3 are very fortunate to have so my talented and skilled parents and grandparents who are always willing to come and share their knowledge. We are very thankful to have had four design and technology experts Joan Northfield, Heath Kerr, Marc D’Unienville and Andrew Read come in to share their knowledge with us on Wednesday. A big Thank you goes out to all these parents. They added another dimension to our teaching and learning and all the students benefitted immensely from each presentation. Today, my dad Andy came to speak to us about building. He taught us that you have to wear a lot of safety equipment to be safe. He also taught us about how

many types of bricks and materials there are and how we can use them to build a sustainable house.

Jess Read

Today, my dad Marc came in to class to talk to us about the body and how sometimes we need to use technology such as stents and balloons to keep healthy. We learned about arteries, veins, stents, hearts, brains and lungs. The balloons and stents help to unblock arteries. Some stents have balloons at the end to open the artery. Belle D’Unienville

On Wednesday the 21st of August, Josie’s Nan came in to make Owls with us. First we stuffed the Owl. Then we stuck the eyes on and sewed the bottom. After that we cut out the feet and stuck them on. I waited for it to dry then played with my Owl. Olivia Field

Today Milla’s dad Heath taught us about filming, Go-pros and the different camera lenses. We went outside and acted in a small film. The film was in slow

motion. We learnt a lot about camera technology. Bailey Parrot and David Overton

In addition we would also like to thank Warren Overton for presenting an exceptional double session on sustainable housing designs. Every grade 3 students was held captivated throughout the entire presentation and

all came away with a solid understanding of what sustainable houses could look like. In fact, they are all attempting to design their own for homework this week.

Year Four This week in Year 4 our students continued the immersion process of Design, Creativity and Technology. On Monday, we were fortunate enough to have Ryan from Supreme Incursions visit our school to teach us how to make a billy cart using various tools and materials. Students worked very well in teams and had lots of fun racing their billy carts too.

Year Five and Six What a fantastic day at our House Athletics yesterday. Our students participated, performed , encouraged and shone as did staff and our wonderful parent helpers. It was fantastic to see students support and encourage one another, demonstrate resilience and show great

sportsmanship. Most of all it was so wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves and having a go.
