New legislation and safety systems, as well as constantly evolving specifications mean that while Palfinger lorry loader cranes are incredibly capable, they are also complex pieces of equipment. The knowledge needed to operate and maintain them can sometimes seem quite daunting. To overcome this T H White’s Lorry Crane service department now offers fleet customers an on-site ‘introduction to lorry cranes’ course for maintenance controllers to ensure that operatives have a basic understanding of all the new systems and changes. The course involves a brief overview of:• Lorry loader applications • Attachment configurations• Control lever positions• Radio remote operations• Rated capacity and optimum geometry positions • Basic hydraulic overview• Components and their locations

• Safety and warning system legislations and operation• Paltronic 50 operating systems and diagnostic displays• Maintenance SchedulesThe course enables fleet control centre staff to gain a greater understanding of the lorry loader industry, and the issues that may arise when dealing with the end users / operators on a daily basis, as well as keeping up with any changes in legislation. T H White's Security and Fire Division has just been awarded approved supplier status with EMS Wireless Fire Systems. EMS is a premier UK supplier of wireless fire detection equipment, based in Herne Bay, Kent, where the company designs and manufactures all its products. This award will mean T H White and EMS will now work together to develop the use of wireless fire products in the UK, particularly on larger project schemes. Gareth Brand, EMS’s Commercial Manager is shown presenting the award to Steve Kenny, General Manager of our Security and Fire Division.

Staff at T H White’s Fiat Group Brand Centre in Swindon have raised funds for the town’s Prospect Hospice – just by being naff! On Monday, December 15, the team was on strict orders to flout the usual dress code and instead turn up to work in their flashiest, silliest and funniest festive top. Each participant had to donate £2 to the hospice for the privilege. Steve Woodward, commercial sales manager, hatched the fun plan along with a colleague and soon the team was on board.

Tony Ainsley (fourth from the left in this 1970s photograph) has died aged 83. After leaving school Tony got his first job with T Pope Ltd and was almost immediately called to do National Service during which he completed two years with the army as an engineer. When he returned in 1955 T H White had taken over Popes and Tony became a fitter the Agricultural Workshop at Granham Hill Works. In the early 60s he took over as Workshop Foreman, then gained the position of Service Manager, staying with T H White when in 1978 the business moved to today’s site at London Road, Marlborough. Tony retired aged 60 in October 1992. Tony was a very knowledgeable and versatile person, turning his hand to any machine that needed repairing and helping his fitters when they had difficulties. He was strict with his workforce and set high standards, always insisting on doing nothing less than a first class job. Tony leaves two daughters – Carol and Deborah – also two grand children Jack and Adam, of whom he was very proud.

The Prospect Hospice was an obvious choice for Steve, who has first hand experience of the care it provides to patients at the end of their lives. “I think Prospect is a great cause,” he added. “It’s something that’s a bit personal to me. Most of my family have had cancer and have used Prospect at one stage or another. “They do a really good job. We are all proud to have raised as much as we did and we had a few giggles in the process – we’re all for that!”

Apprenticeships have been at the heart of the T H White recruitment policy for many years, and on 8 December three young staff from the Agriculture Division attended a presentation and lunch to celebrate their successful completion of their apprenticeship with T H White. T H White's Grasscare Division has become an exclusive dealer for the ProLine range produced by Wessex International. The range comprises some of the highest quality finishing mowers, roller mowers and sweeper collectors produced in Britain today. A remarkable new monitoring system that will help to provide dairy farmers with automatic early warnings about the condition of their cows has been launched by DeLaval. Herd NavigatorTM is now available for British milk producers who use Voluntary Milking Systems (VMS) and promises to improve the financial result and time efficiency relative to each cow. When cows are being milked, representative milk samples are taken simultaneously from different milking points in different VMS units and sent, one-by-one, to the analyser instrument. The system automatically selects, through an advanced bio-model, which cows to sample for which parameter – ketosis, mastitis, reproduction or urea.

“Herd Navigator provides early warnings that alert the milk producer to the appropriate quick action needed for individual cows,” explains Kieran FitzGerald, DeLaval’s VMS Solutions Manager. “This is especially useful for reproduction (knowing when a cow is likely to be in heat, when she is actually in heat and when to inseminate), as well as health and nutrition.” Using Herd Navigator’s sophisticated bio modelling, analytical results are presented on the farmer’s computer in a clear form that makes it easy to spot animals which need special attention. Herd Navigator also automatically measures the level of progesterone in milk – the ‘Gold

Standard’ for the cow’s reproductive status. With the system, you will see when the cow is in heat (therefore breeding the right cow at the right time), when she is pregnant, when she has an early embryonic loss and which cows have abnormal ovarian structures such as cysts and anoestrus. Less time will be spent on monitoring heats by farm staff and annual palpitations and ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis is replaced by Herd Navigator. The enzyme LDH (lactate de-hydrogenase) is highly correlated to somatic cell counts early in new infections and is closely linked to the presence of mastitis. Levels of LDH rise rapidly when a new infection begins, measuring this with Herd Navigator results in an infection being detected before it is visible to the human eye. Treatment of ketosis as soon as it begins avoids unnecessary treatments and, by treating the right cow at the right time, results an increase on average of 600kg of milk per cow treated, per lactation. Farms using Herd Navigator have been able to detect 50 per cent more clinical and sub-clinical cases of ketosis than previously detected with traditional tools. Herd Navigator is automatically monitoring the BHB – betahydroxbutyrate - in the milk in the first 60 days after calving, focusing on the cows at risk of ketosis, thus enabling producers to act early and prevent a loss in milk production with the consequent increased veterinary costs through displaced abomasums. In combination with monitoring urea levels during milking – urea being used as an indicator of over or under feeding protein – Herd Navigator provides on a daily basis the data that you need to adjust rations or the cow’s environment.
