#OWNTHESOUTH

Awesome weekend of Finals!Nice weather last weekend ensued that crowds came out for an awesome weekend of SFNL SAS Security Finals.

Congratulations and thanks go to Clayton and Keysborough on their excellent finals hosting job at late notice, due to the relocation of the Division 3 Semi Finals from Heatherton Recreation Reserve last weekend.

Similar to the week before, both venues presented so well and we congratulate Clayton and Keysborough for putting in a great effort to host successful events.

Well done to Robbie Imbriano and the Clayton workforce, as well Manny Scata and the Keysborough community. They should all be so proud and we look forward to assessing their finals applications in 2017.

Pleasingly, the SFNL Division 3 Preliminary Finals will be at Heatherton Recreation Reserve this weekend. The playing surface has again improved in the last two weeks following some excellent work by the Kingston Council and Heatherton FNC.

“Engagement” …The results are in!Our second edition of the Voice of the South – Fan Engagement Survey was Engagement with the questions focusing on our digital media platforms.

The survey was designed to give stakeholders an opportunity to provide feedback on the media initiatives of the SFNL.

In another very pleasing outcome, an enormous response rate was received with just under 600 individual surveys’ completed.

The high-level results from the survey was as follows:

I. Majority use Facebook (72%), Website (66%) and Emails (52%) as the main platforms to connect with SFNL.

II. Round Reviews (84%) and Round Previews (80%) were the most likeable Facebook content, followed by Feature Stories (72%) and Top 5 Players of the Round (66%). The results indicated that there was plenty of interest for SFNL TV videos (57%) and the Awkward Bounce videos (56%), however more promotion is required.

III. 64% rated the content of the SFNL Website as OK while 33% stated it was excellent. 73% found the functionality of the SFNL website easy to use, however, the other feedback indicated it wasn’t easy to use on mobile or tablet. The majority use the SFNL website for fixtures (87%), ladders (84%) and results (70%) with lesser interest in news stories (30%).

IV. 77% read the SFNL Record, where 51% rated the content as OK and 48% as excellent. Similar to website results, majority enjoy viewing ladders, results and fixtures, with club notes and team lists also popular.

V. Majority do not listen to SFNL Radio with 44% never listening and 38% listening a few times a year. The main reasons for not listening included ‘not interested’, ‘no time’ and ‘not knowing about it’. Of the listeners, 49% listen live to Match of the Day and 30% listen live to The 5th Quarter (Sunday Show). Majority enjoy SFNL Radio for the scores, game reviews, banter and match day commentary.

VI. 59% do not watch SFNL TV, where majority who do watch it will do so monthly. Majority want to see highlights. Majority would like to watch on a Sunday (29%) with 6-9pm as the preferred time slot (56%).

VII. 55% do not use SFNL Live, with the main reason being they were not aware it existed. Of the users, 65% will use it a few times a year with 20% using it every week. Majority use it for results and live scores for their team.

Where to from here? The SFNL are now analysing this data with the view to making improvements. Some small changes have already been made to the SFNL Website and Record over the last few months and further consideration will be had in the off-season.

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTERQualifying FinalBentleigh 10.9 (69) def by Oakleigh District 15.6 (96) The Districts’ flag tilt is gathering some serious momentum after an impressive 27-point victory over Bentleigh at Springvale.

Their seventh consecutive win ensures the Oaks will progress through to the third week of September at a minimum, and sets up a blockbuster clash with minor premiers Dingley next week for a spot in the 2016 Grand Final.

It was Bentleigh that started the stronger of the two sides, dominating possession and causing the District headaches with their run through the midfield. They were rewarded with the first two goals of the game in quick succession through Matty Troutbeck, whose scintillating opening term was largely the difference between the combatants.

Oakleigh District then sprung to action in the second term on the back of some Khaled Kandakji magic. Three electrifying goals in five minutes to the diminutive livewire provided the spark for the Districts, who went on to register seven in a dominant quarter of football and swing the game firmly in their favour.

The Oaks continued their assault in the second half, extending their 24-point half time lead to 40 by the final change. At various stages, the difference threatened to blow out past 10 goals, and it perhaps would have had it not been for the resistance led by Andrew Walsh, Scott Lawry and Ben Morrison (four goals).

Kandakji, Dan Kiellerup and Dave Velardo were the chief destroyers up forward with four goals each, while Jake Mullen and Ryan Pearson ran rampant through the midfield.

But with Bentleigh comfortably winning the clearances and inside 50 stats, it was the Districts’ backline that perhaps deserves the biggest credit. Pat Carroll, Nathan Brown and Brody Hodic were towers of strength and repelled everything kicked in their direction.

However, the Districts’ victory has been soured by a hamstring injury to veteran playmaker Paul Fermanis, the severity of which is yet to be determined.

Elimination FinalClayton 6.11 (47) def by East Malvern 16.11 (107) East Malvern has rediscovered its early season form, pulling out a top-shelf performance to thrash arguably Division 1’s most in-form team, Clayton, by 10 goals at Springvale Reserve.

The Clays entered the clash on the back of eight wins from their last nine games, but it was clear from the outset that they weren’t going to have it all their own way.

East Malvern’s ferocity at the contest prevented Clayton from getting any clean outside ball, resulting in a dour, physical contest for the majority of the opening term.

More than 18 minutes had elapsed before Panthers defender Ralph Sadler snuck forward to pop through the opening goal of the game, and by quarter time East Malvern were out to a 17-point advantage and looked like taking control of the contest.

And after the resumption, that is precisely what they did. The bigger-bodied Panthers dominated in the midfield, despite the absence of star ruckman Matt Terech. With Jimmy Dowling and Ed Sim monopolising the clearances, East Malvern added three goals in the first five minutes to blow Clayton out of the water.

Conversely the Clays struggled in the front half, and too often turned the ball over inside 50 with wayward passes. Consequently, they were held goalless to halftime, while seven second-term majors up the other end had the Panthers ahead by 59 points at the long break.

To their credit, the Clays fought back with five goals in the third, but in reality this was a deficit they were never going to overcome.

While much of the damage was done in the trenches for the Panthers, impressive youngster Jack Hammond provided plenty of run on the outside, while up forward Mark Ryan returned to form with five goals.

Gabby Irons and Matt Wilson worked hard all afternoon, and did their best to spark the Clays into action with three brilliant goals in the third term, but unfortunately they received little support.

Second Semi Final – Saturday 10th SeptemberDingley V Oakleigh District (Springvale Reserve) Minor premiers Dingley get their first taste of finals footy in 2016 as they take on the resurgent Oakleigh District, with the winner to become the first team through to the last Sunday in September.

Dingley have once again been the competition pace-setters this year with a galaxy of stars on every single line. But, more importantly, this is an incredibly well-drilled team with each of the starting 22 performing their role.

Notably, the Dingoes possess the most damaging midfield group in the comp with the perfect blend of grunt and polish. Josh Ferguson, Chris Horton-Milne, Jack Ades and Luke Bartholomew are all valuable contributors both inside and out, with several others capable of rotating through the midfield when required.

Up forward, Cal McQueen looms as the game-breaker, but expect an even spread of goalkickers including Dan Farmer and Kristen Feehan as well as a host of onballers.

The Districts also possess a phenomenally potent forward line, with Dave Velardo, Khaled Kandakji and Aaron Henneman among a host of players capable of bagging multiple goals. Unfortunately, the club will likely be deprived one of their most important and versatile players through the injury-enforced withdrawal of Paul Fermanis.

Expect Oaks midfielders Andy Howison and Jake Mullen to also have an impact.

Dingley will be raring to go after the week off, and expect them to come out all guns blazing from the opening bounce. Meanwhile Oakleigh District plays an exciting brand of footy capable of beating the competition’s best and looks to be peaking at just the right time.

This will be a magnificent contest between two powerful teams, but it’s hard to go past Dingley, who should qualify for their third consecutive Division 1 Grand Final in an absolute thriller.

First Semi Final – Sunday 11th SeptemberBentleigh V East Malvern (Springvale Reserve) High stakes in this cut-throat semi with a Preliminary Final berth on offer for the victor, while Mad Monday awaits the loser.

East Malvern were most impressive in destroying Clayton last week, and seem to have regained the sparkling form from them that we saw from them in the early part of the season. With their big-name stars in Ed Sim, Jimmy Dowling, Tremaine Tohiariki and Nathan Robinson finally regaining their touch after injury-interrupted seasons, they could once again pose a massive threat both in the guts and up forward.

Dominant Panthers ruckman Matt Terech is also likely to miss one more week with a shoulder injury, meaning Luke Poustie and Andrew Johnson will probably be called upon to combat the aerial dominance of Bentleigh’s Andrew Walsh. Although the pair battled manfully in tandem against the Clays, Walsh, one of the preeminent big men in the competition, will be a much more formidable adversary.

But Bentleigh’s biggest worry will be its ability to kick a winning score. It’s forward line depth will be tested on Sunday as it will likely be missing it’s two biggest attacking weapons. With Pat Nicholls unavailable, and Matty Troutbeck unlikely to take the field after injuring his shoulder last week, the Demons will be forced to find goals from other sources.

Nevertheless, expect its established stars in Scott Lawry, Sam McGarry and James Robertson to step up when required.

This looms as a real physical encounter between two sides fighting to stay alive in 2016. The Demons will be full of run on the outside, but the Panthers should have their measure with their strength in the trenches. That harder edge should propel East Malvern to victory, and in the process consign Bentleigh to a straight-sets finals exit.

70 James Howard Made a late run at the senior side. Old-school footballer who does the simple things very well.

71 Scott Mortimer Made entirely of lego, Morts is an incredibly valuable utility.

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES

BENTLEIGH By James Kiernan

The first week of finals saw the club storm Springvale Reserve as we managed to qualify an unprecedented three teams in just the seniors and reserves competitions for finals footy. Our seniors, who finished second on the ladder, played Oakleigh Districts in an incredibly tough qualifying final for a chance to play Dingley and to hold on to their finals second chance. We started well, as utility Matthew Troutbeck had four scoring shots inside seven minutes and we seemed to run the large ground better than our opponents. However, that all changed in the second quarter as our one goal quarter-time lead vanished quickly and Oakleigh took charge of the game through scoring small forward Khaled Kandakji’s three quick goals. We battled hard but at three quarter time we found ourselves down by 40 points and couldn’t fully bring it back in a frustrating day for the club, as we went down by 27 points. Next week the seniors will play East Malvern in a win or go home event. Bentleigh’s reserves

played Cheltenham in the qualifying final for a chance to beat the Rosellas for the first time this year and to play Dingley for a spot in the Grand Final. We jumped on them early with some quick goals and showed our superior leg speed with some good switches and gut running. However, our inaccurate goal kicking kept them in the game for a few quarters, but our consistent forward entries were too much to handle and our lead grew. We ended up 50-point winners and made statement of intent to the league as we look forward to Dingley this week. E.B Bentleigh’s reserves played off against St Kilda City in the hotly contested and thoroughly entertaining elimination final. We trailed for what seemed like the entire game but refused to give up and never gave our opponents a break, as we trailed by just two goals at three-quarter-time. We charged home in the last and it made for a grandstand finish, as Chris Clement starred in the forward line, Alan Hendry imposed his will on any and all opponents and Ben De Nardis was seemingly everywhere. However, just two points down with a couple

minutes left we couldn’t quite kick a winner and fell agonisingly short of a great win, only to be unfortunately knocked out of finals. A great effort by the Vamps and all of our teams this week as we still have two more finals games this week and hopefully many more.

The club will be hosting its Best and Fairest at Bentleigh RSL on October 8. Those wishing to book a spot can confirm attendance on the facebook page or call 0478 473 570.

DINGLEYNetball

Our fantastic Division one team experienced the ultimate disappointment of losing the biggest game of the season to arch rivals Heatherton, going down by enough to confirm that it simply was not ‘their day’, and proving yet again how hard it is to win Grand Finals at any level and on any stage. Our Division three team had spectators’ hearts beating right to the end only to go down by a miserable two points and again to Heatherton. Congratulations to our near neighbours, in what is and a continuation of the two club’s traditional rivalry. A disappointing end to two great seasons, but we’ll re-set for 2017. An absolute certainty was that our U19s were going to be premiers with Dingley One playing off against Dingley Twos. The Twos repeated their victory of the Second Semi to hold the cup up.

It is impossible to overstate the contribution netball has had over all those football clubs who have been able to encompass the sport into their organisation. Dingley is proud of all its netball players, coaches, great managers and die hard supporters.

See you in 2017.

Juniors

Fantastic results for our U16 and U17 boys with flags against East Malvern and Beaumaris respectively. The premiership cups are the icing on the cake and congratulations to all those involved. The real meal on the table is that there is a terrific talent pool of young players ready to take that next step in their careers and hopefully with long careers at their club : at our club.

A quick scan of our senior teams shows that their foundation stone is local kids, i.e. ex juniors. That policy of junior promotion to senior ranks was put in place half a dozen year ago by Shane Morwood and his staff and is the only way to guarantee sustained success.

Thirds

A great win by the Thirds over Skye in last Saturday’s Qualifying Final. Bails and Butch have not stopped smiling since and good luck to ‘Spud’ Sikora and the ‘Boys’ for the rest of the finals.

Seniors

This week, the season proper starts against a confident Oakleigh Districts in the main

game and Bentleigh in the Reserves, both

sides having benefitted from last week’s

rest. The only thing to be said is that both

sides are ready to go and will go into battle

with the full support of the Dingley faithful.

Turn up and make a noise. Good luck to both

teams.

ST PAULS Our youngsters were our only finals contestants - with Sunday being Father’s Day, only family and a few diehards were watching (Mrs Mercer, Kerry Honey, Paul etc).

From now on it is cut-throat footy - lose and you’re out. After a week of intensive training the boys hit the ground running, with a goal in 26 seconds. Play was scrappy for a while and opportunities were missed, but

we kept Chelt scoreless in the first term. Chelt were keen to amend a poor start but our backs led by Walshy and Joseph held firm - we took a 22-point lead at half time. Wayne asked for increased running and pressure - Browny was everywhere, great goals from him and Josh, then

Chelt responded with goals against the breeze. Harry and Cookie stepped up - we lead by 30 points at the final change. The big ground was testing players’ fitness.

Youngsters Wil and Dylan got the ball

forward regularly and Browny, Harry,

Brad and Dylan scored 4 unanswered

goals. Chelt scored a couple as

players tired, but Dylan scored our

last on the siren.

Need to train even harder for return

match against Oakleigh.

#OWNTHESOUTHSOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

The first round of Southern Football Netball League Division 2 finals is done and dusted with one team preparing for Mad Monday and four gearing up for next week’s games.

Qualifying Final

Chelsea Heights 13.8 (86) def by Caulfield 19.13 (127) The Bears got a season best game from Andrew Sheed with eight goals to roll over the Heighters and move on to the Second Semi Final a chance at a Grand Final berth.

Sheed’s best on ground performance came at the right time with Caulfield coming to the game with average form at best.

Caulfield led by only a point at the first before an eight-goal second term powered them to a 34-point lead at the half time break.

Chelsea Heights took advantage of the favourable conditions during the third term to cut the margin down to 22 points off the back of a four goal to two quarter.

In the end, the Bears proved to have all the answers as they piled on another seven goals to four in the final term to blow the Heighters out of the water and record a 41-point win and a clash against Port Melbourne Colts.

Phil Smith was the figure head up forward for Chelsea Heights with seven majors while Andrew Cupit was also impressive.

Elimination Final

Skye 14.3 (87) def Highett 9.11 (65) In one of the best comebacks of the season, Skye turned a 25-point quarter time deficit into a 22-point victory against Highett.

The forward combination of Kyle Gascoigne, Ben Walker and Brett Dawson proved the difference in the end as the trio combined for nine majors to push the Bombers across the line.

The tireless work from Nathan McConville and James Bateman worked wonders for the Bombers as they booted three goals to three behinds in the second term to cut the lead from 25 points down to only nine at the half time interval.

A further six goals to its tally gave Skye all the momentum as Highett could do little to change the game.

The writing on the wall continued to be written in the final term as the Bombers piled on another four goals while restricting the Dogs to just two to ring in a 22-point triumph.

Mitchell Hoar (three goals) was named as Highett’s best on ground alongside Reece Schuth.

Finals Week 1 Preview It’s Semi Final time in Division 2 and a couple of intriguing match ups are on the dial with one team set to book their spot in the Grand Final in two weeks’ time.

Second Semi Final – Saturday 10th September

Port Melbourne Colts V Caulfield (Jack Barker Oval) The undefeated juggernaut of Division 2 takes on the upstart Bears who seem to have hit their best form at the absolute right time of the year.

The Colts will go into this match as favourites and deservedly so having been rarely bothered throughout the year.

Its dual-threat attack up forward consisting of Mitchell Clarke (54 goals) and Jason Butty (50 goals) have rarely put a foot wrong this season and provide the Colts with two reliable and strong targets inside 50.

The engine room as been dangerous throughout the season with the likes of Justin Taylor and Lewis Mildenhall among the best in the competition.

For the Bears, Andrew Sheed is an obvious selection for in-form players after his eight-goal haul last week, but Nick Gilbert has also been a dangerous commodity and will be someone the Colts need to put work in to.

Josh Wood and Mick Harrington have enjoyed strong seasons in 2016 and will look to perform again on the big stage this weekend.

Tough game to pick but it is hard to go past Port Melbourne booking a spot in the Grand Final.

Port Melbourne by 21 points

First Semi Final

Chelsea Heights v Skye (Jack Barker Oval) The Heighters will be disappointed with last week’s effort against Caulfield and will be out for redemption, while Skye will be riding halfway to cloud nine after fighting back against Highett.

The two sides have split their meetings this year with each winning on their home deck making this contest on neutral ground all the more interesting.

Key forward Phil Smith has proven to be effective whenever he has lined up for the Heighters and been a reliable forward option with 65 goals from 13 games, while Lachlan Dobson has also been impressive with 42 goals.

In the midfield, the return of Travis Johnstone has been important while Luke Behin and Jordan Peryman are vital to Chelsea Height’s success.

For the Bombers, they have relied on a forward line by committee approach with the likes of Kyle Gascoigne, Ben Evans and Ben Walker each proving they can take a game by the scruff of the neck in attack.

James Bateman and Jordan Thomas have also been important to Skye’s success this season while the return of captain Aaron Pacey has been inspirational.

I like both teams in this one but there can only be one winner so I’ll go with Chelsea Heights; it will have just too much firepower in this one.

Chelsea Heights by 10 points.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTESHIGHETT

LMC Laser club notes. Mixed results last Sunday, the reserves magnificent and the Seniors did not kick straight enough. Thank you to all our officials and helpers, who support our teams each week. To all our players, lets keep supporting our Reserves, stick together and enjoy our ride. GO DOGGIES

PORT COLTSVodaphone Reserves Report The Port Colts reserves are through to semi-final and will battle for a spot in the grand final after downing Springvale Districts 14.7(91) to 9.9(63).

The game was close throughout, as the Districts led at the first change before the Colts gained back the momentum and took a four-point lead into the half time break.

Coach Ben Smith’s words at half time must have been inspiring, as his side came out firing in the second half, booting eight goals to four and running out comfortable 28-point victors.

Despite such a small lead at half time, Smith knew his side still had a strong chance of winning the game.

“The key turning point after half time was our belief in our third quarters,” he said.

“We have been very strong all year in the third and that again showed on the weekend.”

The win will see them face ladder leaders Skye, for the right to be the first time straight into the grand final.

Bay and Bridge Seniors Report 18 from 18. The Colts have finished the regular season on top of the ladder, but more impressively with an unbeaten record.

Its latest win, a comfortable fifty-point victory over Hampton rounds off Port Melbourne’s perfect winning record.

The home side started slowly, possibly due to nerves, as a loss would mean its bid for an 18-0 regular season would be finished.

10 goals over the second and third terms put the result beyond doubt and allowed the Colts to cruise to the win.

As such, Port Melbourne had the first week of finals off and will today face Caulfield, who finished in third place on the ladder at season’s end.

WARRIORS SHINE AGAINST SANDOWN

TWO TIMS TRIUMPH IN MILESTONES

SFNL MEDIA DESK

The Sandown Cobras hosted the Japan Warriors AFL Development Squad in a friendly match under lights at Edinburgh Reserve last Thursday, with the night proving to be a raging success.

A massive crowd was on hand last week to witness the Warriors take on a Cobras outfit consisting of mainly reserve-grade players, with a handful of first 18 players to make up the numbers. And despite the vast difference in footy experience between the two sides, the Warriors surprised a few people (including themselves) and performed exceptionally well.

Following the conclusion of the match, the two teams stuck around and enjoyed the post-match festivities and few cold beverages with each other and a number of supporters until 11:30pm.

Last week’s friendly was the second of two scheduled matches for the Warriors against SFNL opposition, following a match against Keysborough’s Thirds the previous Sunday at Keysborough Reserve. For the record, the visitors pipped the Burras by a solitary point.

For many of the Warriors players, this has been their first trip outside of Japan and their first proper games of Aussie Rules, and by all accounts they’ve absolutely loved their experience.

Well done to both the Keysborough and Sandown Football Netball Clubs for their outstanding big congratulations to the Japanese boys for their great efforts!

It was an extra special day for two Division 2 club favourites on the weekend, with both Caulfield co-captain Tim Kennedy and Skye stalwart Tim Barr celebrating milestone matches during the first week of the finals.

Even better for the two veterans, both of their teams saluted to keep their Division 2 premiership hopes alive.

On Saturday, Kennedy ran out for his 100th game for the Bears as his team took on the might of Chelsea Heights in the Qualifying Final. After a hard-fought contest, TK’s Bears ran out victorious by 41 points, much to the delight of the large contingent of family and friends that had turned out to Jack Barker Oval for the big game.

Coincidentally, Jackson Fry also played his 100th for the Heighters in the same match.

The following day, Barr played a starring role in his 150th club game, as his beloved Bombers defeated Highett in the Elimination Final. So impressive was Barr rebounding out of defence, the SFNL Radio Team gave him the Blackchrome Sportswear Player of the Day award for his unrelenting efforts.

Congratulations to both men on their milestones. Hopefully there are plenty more games to come!

Tim Barr (left) is chaired off the ground by his Skye teammates after his 150th game on Sunday, while Tim Kennedy (right) is all smiles after the Bears salute in his 100th on Saturday.

DIVISION 3 RESULTS: FINALS WEEK 2Second Semi FinalMount Waverley 20.13 (133) def Ashwood 4.7 (31)Mount Waverley seized control from the outset against Ashwood.

Any thought that the weight of favouritism, or a week off would dull the Mountain Lions’ focus was rapidly dispelled.

They mauled the Magpies all over the ground.

Drew Macrae got things underway, snapping the Mountain Lions’ first goal moments into the game.

Ashwood struggled to penetrate a disciplined Mount Waverley backline.

The Mountain Lions cleared the ball from defence with aplomb and were often quick to take it down the other end.

James Gough rewarded the hard work of his teammates, kicking a couple of first term goals.

Although the Mountain Lions led by just 17 points at quarter time, the signs were ominous for the Magpies.

The Mountain Lions were urged at the huddle to maintain their intensity.

They heeded the advice and Gough soon booted the ball between the big sticks and into the neighbour’s yard.

A few Ashwood players may have already wished it was the only ball and that it couldn’t be found.

The margin continued to grow, reaching 74 points by the final change.

Another Macrae goal during the final term pushed the lead to triple figures and the Mountain Lions prevailed by 102 points.

Daniel Thirkell and Dylan Cincotta both impressed for the winner.

Cincotta set the tone early, showing dash and clearing the ball effectively from defence.

Up forward, Gough finished an authoritative display with eight goals and Ian Taylor kicked three majors.

The pressure he applied to keep the ball in the forward line and his skilful passing made Taylor a major contributor.

Michael Keem was named second best, behind Gough.

First Semi FinalDoveton 15.8 (98) def Hallam 9.18 (72) A behind to Hallam seven minutes into the third term closed Doveton’s lead to a couple of points. An expectant crowd at Keysborough seemed set to be treated to a close finish.Suddenly a transformation came over the game. Doveton shifted into a higher gear and the Hawks couldn’t match this increased intensity. Incredibly, an Eagles’ goal at the 18-minute mark blew the margin out to 32 points. Doveton had kicked five unanswered majors into the wind in 11 minutes of dominance. A Steve Sigeti goal broke the sequence and gave Hallam a glimmer of hope. With a term to play, the deficit was still an imposing 23 points. The Hawks were instructed to “run and carry at all costs” as they faced a make or break term against the wind. In the final term, early chances resulted in just a couple of Hawks’ behinds.

When Doveton’s Adam Read ran into an open goal 10 minutes in, the task was beyond the Hawks.

Doveton won by 26 points.

The season of Eagles’ forward Peter Dye appeared to have been derailed by a knee problem.

He had managed just two games since the start of June and had not played since mid-July, but Doveton backed him to stand up to the pressure of a final.

He rewarded this show of faith with six goals.

Nicholas Beer was named the winner’s best.

Five of Hallam’s goals came from the boot of strong-marking forward Shane Thomas.

Daniel Chin and Manny Peresso performed well and were listed as the Hawks’ best, although the efforts of fellow midfielder Phillip Ward also deserves mention.

WEEK 3 FINALS PREVIEW

Preliminary Final – Saturday 10 SeptemberDoveton Eagles vs Ashwood (Heatherton Recreation Reserve) When Doveton and Ashwood clashed in week one of the finals, the Magpies punished the Eagles for their inaccuracy.

Ashwood capitalised when it had the wind in the second term, after the Eagles kicked a wasteful 3.8 in the opening quarter.

The Eagles failed to erase a half time deficit by the last change.

With injury problems and kicking into a strong breeze there was no realistic hope of overcoming the confident Magpies in the final term.

Ashwood prevailed by 25 points.

Matt Maginnes helped an organised Magpies’ backline keep pressure on Doveton’s forwards.

The Eagles were unable to contain Mitch Saunders who was productive in the midfield and up forward.

Paul Wineberg booted four goals for the Magpies, just two less than the entire Doveton team.

No Eagles managed more than a single major.

Doveton’s forward line will pose a sterner test for the Magpies in the Preliminary Final if Peter Dye is fit.

His ability to be a major contributor in the Eagles’ semi final win over Hallam was commendable.

The concern is whether or not his troublesome knee will enable him to be as effective this week, having returned from a lengthy layoff.

For Ashwood there may be mental scars to overcome after it was humbled by a dominant Mount Waverley last week.

Expect an intriguing Preliminary Final as feathers fly in this avian battle.

Awaiting the winner is a Grand Final place against the hungry Mountain Lions.

The old cliché of taking it one week at a time has rarely been more apt.

Tipping this one is about as tough as calling the recent Federal election. At least there is bound to be a worthy winner on this occasion.

Expect the result to go Doveton’s way, but it won’t be a landslide.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTESSANDOWN COBRASCongratulations to Shane Cosstick on his 100th game with our club! Well Done!

Thirds We have started our Finals Campaign. We played Endeavour Hills at Jack Barker Oval Cheltenham in the Elimination Final. It was a thrilling win on our part, great team effort, we got over Endeavour Hills by 70 points. Coach Matt McCormick applauded his team

by saying this was the best he had seen from them yet. He also encouraged a positive attitude by saying “Now do you see what we can achieve!” Best on field were J Mott, J Billing, J Hurford, F Masofa, D Fitzgerald and J Meyer. Looking forward to playing Endeavour Hills again next season.

Thank you to all players, coaches and Board members who helped to man the gates for the SFNL on Saturday your commitment is duly noted.

Thank you to all Volunteers and supporters whom we appreciate and would not be without.

Our next match is Sunday 11th September at Jack Barker Oval Cheltenham at 9.30am.

Reserves Report: This time to Keysborough in our tour of the South East of Melbourne in a knock out final against Hallam. Little luck early as Gurkin pinged one and our run off half back disappeared with Daniel’s shoulder before half time.

Changes were made, some worked some didn’t still we are not one to surrender and we forced our way back in the game through Mott’s marking and Punters guts. Within a goal but we just couldn’t grab the one needed to pinch it. A good year but out in straight sets and a summer to think about where we find a bit more youth and mid field pace. Well done to Jona and Johnnie and the support staff outstanding as always.

Seniors Report: played Mt Waverley at Clayton with the ground in very good condition. With a grand final berth to play

for we put in a very disappointing effort. It was very difficult to pick out best players on the day with the exception of Hodgey and Boofa down back, Mitch in the middle and Alex and Jonga. The real positive is we have this week to atone for last week’s performance and win a berth in the grand final to exact revenge on our neighbours. Good luck to the boys in this week’s game.

Social Calendar: Friday October 14th, Presentation Night please place your name on the board in the social rooms and get your payment in to Punter now please.

UNDER 19: ON THE UP / ALEX CHARLES

Springvale Reserve once again played host to the Under 19 finals series. Hampton had the week off following their deserved minor premiership and it was up to the remaining four sides to play-off in the Qualifying and Elimination Finals.

St Kilda and Oakleigh took to the field to play in the Qualifying Final with both teams knowing they had a second chance. The Saints entered the fixture in much stronger form but Oakleigh would be no pushover. However, St Kilda used their finals experience and as reigning champions, took a comfortable 36-point lead into the main break.

The Saints continued their impressive form into the second half to prevail by 59 points – setting up a fixture with Hampton in the process. Oakleigh’s inability to hit the scoreboard proved too costly as they only managed 5 goals for the game. Nevertheless, they will get another shot next week.

Oakleigh’s week two opponents, St Pauls, made light-work of Cheltenham in the Elimination Final. The Bulldogs brought some of their early season form to the table when it mattered most, managing a 22-point lead at half time. Their ability to restrict Cheltenham’s scoring in a similar fashion to St Kilda City a day prior was a

key component of this win.

With a five-goal lead at the final change,

the Bulldogs kicked the next four goals

to end Cheltenham’s season. However,

they never gave up and limited the final

margin to just 50 points. Having uncovered

plenty of future stars including Brad

Parker, Tom Davis and the three Kilner

brothers, the future is certainly bright. For

St Pauls, a match against Oakleigh during

the season’s only Semi Final will be very

significant as they seem to be the finals

darkhorse.

Both games weren’t too close but

supporters managed to bring a great

atmosphere and we anticipate more of the

same in the coming weeks! We’d also like

to congratulate the remaining four sides

along with Cheltenham, who were far

from disgraced against the Bulldogs are a

wonderful season.

Onto the remaining finals fixtures – after

their stellar start to the season and

small dip in form, could St Pauls book a

Preliminary Final place or will Oakleigh

put themselves into a premiership-winning

position? Make sure you stay tuned for

next week’s recap as we also see Hampton

against St Kilda for a place in the Grand

Final with the loser getting a second

chance against either Oakleigh or St Pauls.

UMPIRES’ CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHT

The pressure is on for Grand Final spots this weekend, with the two Division 3 panels to be announced after training next Thursday and the remaining six panels to be announced the following Wednesday. Your on-field performances this week will have a big impact on if and where you are umpiring next week. Off-field performances may also count, and arriving at matches on-time, and neatly dressed, will count in your favour at the selection table.

With only three weeks to the Div 1 Granny, it is time for umpires to step up if they haven’t done so already. Field umpires MUST pay all obvious and major free kicks, and all members of every panel must work as a team from the moment they arrive until all the match day paperwork is completed. Fraggle and Harry have been delighted with the performances of all the goal umpires so far in this finals series – they have set a high benchmark for their boundary and field umpire colleagues.

Many umpires have had the opportunity to strut their staff during the first full week of finals. Age should not be a barrier to finals selection. While the older brigade led by Big Al are getting lots of runs on the board some of our younger field umpires have umpired their first senior final or their first Div 1 final in the last fortnight: congratulations to Nathan Guy, Joel Lewis, Matt Mahoney, Dan Streker, Cam Watts and Riley Webster. Joel and Cam were so thrilled with their performances last Saturday that they celebrated in style until sunrise. Boys, don’t be getting ahead of yourselves!! Another young gun to step up was Tom McKinley who goal umpired his first Div 1 final last week at the age of 15!

Several former SFNL umpires ran in VFL finals last weekend. John Cooper and Brad Standfield in VFL seniors and Annie Mirabile, Tyler Hankinson, Nick Bridges and Dean Jones in Development League and TAC Cup finals. Hopefully they will all get Grand Finals later in September. They may be joined in VFL September action next year by some of our current SFNL umpires!

Umpires are expected to arrive at the ground an hour before the start of all finals matches. However, Tom Strudwick and Tessa Gorban overdid things a little last week when they both arrived twenty-five hours before the start! You must also confirm you match on Schedula by Friday morning, or run the risk of having your appointment given to another umpire.

Marshie has asked the senior umpires to “leave the green cards at home” during the finals, although he has

encouraged umpires in the lower grades to use them to give players some “cooling off” time if necessary. After having to take the field during a Colts final last week, when a fieldie was forced off with an injury, Marshie the issued the first green card for the day. Talk about leading by example!

Scottie Learmonth has yet to learn how to iron, as evidenced by the crumpled umpiring shirt he arrived with last Sunday. Luckily Brendan Bartling was able to lend him an impeccably ironed replacement shirt. I hope that it boomerangs – Borgie is still waiting to get back the sweat bands Scottie “borrowed” from him a few weeks ago.

Daryl Cox lost a contact lens at three quarter time last week, and was observed to be umpiring even better in the last quarter than earlier in the game. Perhaps he will run without either lens next week.

Perhaps the largest crowd last weekend was at Murphy Reserve where seven teams of dads representing seven primary schools played six matches in a Dads Footy carnival. The PFA food tent was just outside the umpires’ room and John Borg spent every break with the mums feasting on a variety of snacks. After one of the matches, a player voiced his displeasure with the umpires using language that was singularly inappropriate given that many primary students were in earshot. About ten minutes later, a very humble dad was led to the umpires’ room by his school principal and spent several minutes eating humble pie with a long apology. Perhaps this is an initiative that the SFNL could introduce. Other sanctions could include detention, writing lines, and possibly the strap! At the conclusion of the day, the player judged BOG was presented with the Martin Medal (named after one of the school principals), before Borgie and Steve Jasiak found themselves acting as marshals for a major fireworks display on one of the ovals. Given this experience, they are available to assist the SFNL if it mounts a fireworks display in the future.

Next Thursday, we will celebrate the Division 3 Grand Final appointments with a meal after training. Then, the following Wednesday, all appointments for Umpires being selected to umpire in the last week of the finals will be announced at the Grand Final Appointments Night, which is being held at the Huntingdale Golf Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh.

The Districts were a dominant force on Saturday in their convincing Qualifying Final win over Bentleigh on Saturday, and leading the charge was midfielder Ryan Pearson. The electric speedster was seemingly everywhere, winning

plenty of footy all over the ground and was strong at every contest. He used

the footy magnificently by foot, and was particularly damaging bringing the ball

through the centre.

Congratulations, Ryan!

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Barr has long been a favourite of the SFNL Radio Team, but his outstanding

performance in his 150th game on Sunday saw his stocks rise in their estimation. As Highett kept pumping the ball inside 50, it was Barr that was continually bringing

it back out again. The veteran’s speed and decision making rebounding out of

defence set up teammates further up the ground and helped the Bombers claw

their way back into the contest.

Congratulations, Tim!
