Cold, wet and windy weekend of Finals! For as many years as I can remember we have been very lucky with nice weather on the weekends and minimal rain. So far if we look at the first two finals weekends, that luck appears to have run out. It is much colder and wetter than we have experienced in the last eight years or so.

Well done to all teams that have progressed to another week of finals. In particular, congratulations to Endeavour Hills who had their senior team make finals for the first time ever in their seven-year history and in doing so have already made the Bendigo Bank Dingley Village Division 3 Senior Grand Final.

“Match Day” …The results are in! Our third edition of the Voice of the South – Fan Engagement Survey was Match Day with the questions focusing on the fan’s match day experiences.

The purpose of these surveys is to better engage with our community so that we can understand as a competition how we can improve and evolve.

We had another great response rate with over 400 individual surveys completed. The majority of respondents were footballers, netballers and supporters and 64% of all respondents were male.

Congratulations to the Heatherton FNC who had the most survey responses and were awarded the $500 club credit.

The high-level results from the survey were as follows:

I. Majority (250+ respondents) attend 16-20 SFNL games per season.

II. Majority indicated that Family (110+ respondents) and Work (60+ respondents) were the main factors preventing them from attending games.

I. Majority indicated that Caulfield and Heatherton were the best venues to watch football at, however, it must be noted that both clubs had the highest level of responses aligned to their club.

II. Majority indicated that they were Unsure or listed South Yarra as the the worst venue to watch football at.

III. Majority indicated that on average they would spend over $20 at a game.

IV. 3.6/5 was the weighted average response to the quality of canteen food on offer at clubs. Majority indicated that they were Unsure or listed Caulfield, Dingley and Heatherton as the clubs that had the best canteen offering. Again, it must be highlighted that these clubs had the highest level of responses aligned to their club.

V. Majority rated the overall match day atmosphere and crowd behaviour as Okay (61%) with the secondary ranking as Excellent (32%).

VI. Majority (69%) indicated that they have heard offensive / inappropriate comments in the crowd at matches. However, majority (72%) said they consider SFNL matches an appropriate environment to bring children.

VII. Majority of responses of the the one thing they would like to see implemented at the footy included:

More and better seating, Undercover spectator areas, Better umpires, Auskick at half time, Half time entertainment, More family engagement, Merging of netball and football, Half time activities for kids, Electronic scoreboards/better scoreboards, More crowd involvement and Theme songs playing as teams run out.

Where to from here? The SFNL are now analysing this data with the view to investigating some ways in which we can assist clubs improve their home game experience.

Best of luck to all teams this weekend!

PLAYER OF THE DAY

The solidly-built ball-winner was again at the forefront as Mordialloc overpowered St Pauls in last Saturday’s Qualifying Final. Nicholls led a midfield brigade that dominated possession through the middle of the ground, winning plenty of clearances at the feet of ruckman Tom McMahon. His strength was also a decisive factor, allowing him to win plenty of contested ball, before using his leg speed to bursting clear from the stoppages and deliver the footy with precision.

Congratulations, Daniel!

Wright was the unanimous winner of the award on Sunday with an outstanding performance in the Beena’s Elimination Final victory over Skye. Rock solid in defence all afternoon, the big-bodied swingman read the play superbly and floated across to stop plenty of Skye forward thrusts. Wright simply did as he pleased in the back half for much of the contest, and was super damaging on the rebound to help set up plenty of Murrumbeena counter attacks.

Congratulations, Josh!

FINALS WEEK 1 REVIEW

Qualifying Final

Mordialloc 10.14 (74) def St Pauls 4.9 (33) The powerhouse Bloods are just one win away from a berth in the Division 1 Grand Final after belting St Pauls by 41 points in Saturday’s Qualifying Final at Springvale Reserve.

Mordi were in control of the contest from the opening bounce, but some early inaccuracy kept the Dogs in the hunt in the first half. A wasteful first quarter saw them put just 2.5 on the scoreboard to quarter time, which wasn’t really a reflection of their superiority over their goalless opponent.

Their half time lead was stretched to 21 points, despite some late goals to St Pauls, but in reality, it should have been closer to double that. The Bloods’ inability to put sides away early in the piece has been a bugbear for them all season, but thankfully it didn’t come back to bite them on this occasion.

The Bloods continued to bottle up the ball and create plenty of stoppages, allowing the bigger, stronger bodies of Justin Summons, Jordan Derbyshire, Danny Nicholls and Chris Brooking to exert a decisive influence around the contest. This not only ensured the Bloods dominated possession through the midfield, but made it difficult for the Dogs to display their trademark run and spread.

The Dogs’ lifted their intensity markedly in the third term – a facet of their game that was noticeably lacking in the first half – but again Mordialloc seemed to have the answers to all of St Pauls’ endeavours.

Confronted with five-goal deficit at the final change, the stage was set for one of the Dogs’ famed last quarter comebacks. And although there were coming from a long way back, their positive start to the final stanza gave their supporters plenty of hope.

St Pauls did most of the early attacking, and kept the ball locked in their forward half the for the first few minutes of the quarter. However, they could not find a way to penetrate the resolute Mordialloc defence, and consequently their second goalless quarter for the match handed victory to the red and whites.

The Mordi mids in Nicholls, Derbyshire, Brooking and Todd Bastion all had a massive impact, with ruckman Tom McMahon giving them first use at the stoppages. Down back, Alisdair Jackson stood out, while up the other end Steve Tolongs (three goals) and Matt Ravenall were both terrific.

For the Dogs, it was the quartet of experienced campaigners in Matt Kreymborg, Brad Gilder, Kieran Knox and Trent McIntyre leading the way. Young defender Will Clarke also put in a tremendous performance.

Elimination Final

Bentleigh 9.14 (68) def East Malvern 7.6 (48) The Panthers have bowed out of the 2017 Finals Series, falling 20 points short of Bentleigh in their Elimination Final on Sunday.

While far from a pretty spectacle, the match was no less compelling viewing as the Demons led from go to woah in a two-hour exhibition of tough, uncompromising football.

The in-form Demons entered the clash as slight favourites, and shot out of the blocks with four goals in the opening stanza. The Panthers were forced to play catch-up football for the remainder of the afternoon, and while they refused to roll over, they simply couldn’t quite bridge the gap.

East Malvern won more than their fair share of the footy throughout the day, with Ryan Mullett, Ed Sim, Steve Daniher and Jack Hammond all having an influence through the midfield at various stages, but it was their execution in the front half that let them down, rather than a lack of effort.

At three quarter time, Bentleigh clung to a 12-point lead, and the match looked like going right down to the wire. But the Demons lifted their pressure around the contest and tackled with increased ferocity, which slowed the game down and denied East Malvern any outside ball.

As a result, Bentleigh were able to grind out a tenacious victory and keep its season alive.

The Demons’ big guns in Sam McGarry, Scott Lawry, Jackson Meredith and Brody Lawford were all influential in the result, but spearhead Matt Troutbeck was the clear difference between the two sides, booting six goals in a complete best on ground performance.

Opposing ruckmen Mitch Smart and Matt Terech also fought out a tremendous battle in the air for the entire afternoon, with both featuring among their sides’ best players.

Simon Taylor booted three goals for East Malvern, while Dean Millhouse was their best with a sublime performance off half back.

FINALS WEEK 2 PREVIEW

This weekend sees two blockbuster finals clashes between fierce rivals, and by 5:00pm on Saturday afternoon we will have the first of two 2017 Grand Finalists confirmed.

Second Semi Final – Saturday 9 September

Dingley V Mordialloc (Springvale Reserve)

Previous meetings: Round 13: Dingley 12.7 (79) def Mordialloc 10.13 (73)

Round 4: Mordialloc 8.6 (54) def Dingley 7.10 (52)

Matches in the Southern Football Netball League don’t come much bigger than Dingley and Mordialloc derbies.

It is a titanic rivalry that is fast reaching iconic status given the recent history between the two powerhouse clubs. Four of the last six matches have been decided by one straight kick or less, with another of these contests featuring a 12-point differential at the final siren.

This week the two sides will write the latest chapter in their storied rivalry, and with a Grand Final berth on the line, the stakes has risen ten-fold.

As we have seen through the season, these teams are difficult to split. The Bloods’ powerfully-built midfield unit featuring the likes of Danny Nicholls, Jordan Derbyshire and Todd Bastion did a number on St Pauls last week with their physicality at the contest. But add in the polish of blokes like Aaron Kneebone and Tom Curry and you have an onball group that is equally damaging on both the inside and the outside of the contest.

Dingley also features a star-studded array of midfielders, with the likes of Lucas Walmsley, Jackson Peet, Josh Ferguson and Chris Horton-Milne all able to blow a game open with 10 minutes of brilliance. The will make for an exciting battle in the centre of Springvale Reserve, particularly given the form of the two opposing ruckmen in Tom McMahon (Mordialloc) and Troy McKenzie (Dingley).

But key to this match is the Dingoes’ star forward Calhan McQueen. The Division 1 leading goalkicker missed the last match between these two sides with an ankle complaint back in Round 13, and there is no doubt Dingley are a vastly better side with ‘The Dream’ leading out of the goalsquare.

Mordialloc, meanwhile, has its own arsenal of forward line weaponry, with Steve Tolongs, James Morris and Matt Ravenall all capable of booting a bag on their day, and the Dingoes defenders, including Andrew Frost and Jack Clausen, will need to work hard to keep them all contained.

This match should again go right down to the wire. The Bloods are in tremendous form, and have several big-game players that can swing the match firmly in their favour. But with the week off to freshen up, Dingley coach Shane Morwood will his charges primed and ready to fire on Saturday, which should see them home in another classic.

Dingley by four points.

First Semi Final – Sunday 10 September

St Pauls V Bentleigh (Springvale Reserve)

Previous meetings: Round 10: St Pauls 12.8 (80) def Bentleigh 10.9 (69)

Round 1: Bentleigh 8.6 (54) def St Pauls 5.10 (40)

Fierce local rivals Bentleigh and St Pauls again go head to head this Sunday, and with only one of these two sides to continue their season beyond this weekend, expect no love to be lost between them.

St Pauls announced themselves as the real deal after their upset away victory over Mordialloc in Round 5, a status solidified by a come-from-behind win over the Dingoes a month later. But they had their colours lowered by the Bloods for the second time in successive meetings in last week’s Qualifying Final, the young pups simply unable to match it with their hardness around the contest.

Expect to see Bentleigh employ a similarly physical approach on Sunday.

The Demons tackled like men possessed in the final term of their victory over East Malvern, limiting the amount of outside ball the

Panthers’ playmakers could get their hands on. If they can again increase the amount of stoppages, and bottle the ball up at every opportunity, then it will make it difficult for the Dogs to showcase their trademark run and spread, which is their best chance of victory on the huge Springvale venue.

Assisting the effervescent young pups with be hard-bodies of experienced stars Matt Kreymborg, Keiran Knox and Brad Gilder. All three have had outstanding seasons, and will need to be at their best to get their side over the line. Skipper Harley Ambrose is also set to return to the senior line up after making a successful comeback from a hamstring injury in the reserves last week, and will greatly bolster the Dogs’ midfield strength.

Conversely, Bentleigh’s star ball-winners in Scott Lawry, Sam McGarry, Jackson Meredith and Brody Lawford all fired last week, but the two most important players in the Demons’ side on Sunday will be Mitchell Smart and Matt Troutbeck. Smart’s size and athleticism gives him a distinct aerial advantage over his St Pauls counterparts, which will assist in giving his teammates first use from the stoppages, while versatile spearhead Troutbeck has booted 15 goals in his last three games and is capable of winning games of his own boot, as he displayed last week. Young St Pauls defender Will Clarke is enjoying a breakout season and may spend some time on him through the day, but he will need plenty of support from his teammates to keep the in-form Demon quiet.

This is another contest that could go either way, but the strength and experience of the Demons may hold them in good stead.

Bentleigh by 10 points.

FINALS WEEK 1 REVIEW

Stellar performances from Tim Werner and Alaster Bradley were the highlights of the first week of Division 2 finals with their sides, Keysborough and Murrumbeena on the winners list.

Keysborough 13.7 (85) def Caulfield 8.9 (57) Burra gun Tim Werner was the star as the second ranked Keysie dismantled Caulfield at Clayton’s Meade reserve in the Qualifying Final.

Werner finished the game with three goals in a best on ground performance, booting his side’s first two goals as part of a six-goal onslaught.

Werner’s brother Matt was also in excellent form with two goals alongside an impressive Daniel Morland and Jake D’Atri.

Although Caulfield scored the first goal of the game through Jake Buggy, the rest of the term belong to Keysborough as it slammed home six goals to take a 32-point lead into the first change.

If the Bears were shell shocked it didn’t last long as they booted the first two goals of the second, but again the Burra had the answers, kicking the last three of the half to open up a 33-point advantage.

Tim Werner scored his third goal of the game in the third term, as Keysborough slammed home four to two and increased its lead to 47 by the final change.

Although the game was seemingly won and done, Caulfield finished strongly, booting three goals to two behinds in the last, but the final result still went Keysborough’s way, by 28 points.

Buggy finished as Caulfield’s best alongside Tom Heagney.

Murrumbeena 9.11 (65) def Skye 5.14 (44) The boys from the Beena arena sent an inaccurate Bombers outfit into a tailspin with a superb final quarter display when the game was on the line.

Neither side had shown much in the way of accuracy through three quarters, with Skye narrowly leading Murrumbeena 4.8 to 3.10, but the Beena slammed home six goals from seven scoring shots to one goal from seven from the Bombers in the final quarter to win the game.

Alaster Bradley was excellent as a focal point up forward for the victors, kicking two goals while providing a strong set of hands alongside gutsy captain Mitch Walder who finished with three.

In light of gun Jake Semmel not at his best, Jordan Cusin and Lachlan Batt were in excellent form and put on a display of efficient football.

A tight first quarter saw Murrumbeena a narrow five-point lead into the first change, courtesy of a two goal to one output.

Skye was able to reduce the margin in the second, largely thanks to poor kicking inside 50 from Murrumbeena, with two goals from the Bombers cutting it back to three.

Only one goal was scored in a grinding third term, as the Bombers took a four-point lead into the final change.

Murrumbeena roared to life in the last with the game on the line, as it slammed home six goals to one to take away the victory and stave off elimination.

FINALS WEEK 2 PREVIEW

Semi Final week in Division 2 moves from Clayton to Power Reserve in Doveton as the blockbuster second Semi Final takes centre stage.

Second Semi Final – Saturday 9 September

Chelsea Heights v Keysborough (Power Reserve)

Game of the Week

Previous results: Round 2 – Chelsea Heights 11.9 (75) def Keysborough 6.11 (47) at Keysborough Reserve

Round 13 – Chelsea Heights 14.8 (92) def Keysborough 11.13 (79) at Beazley Reserve

This will be a fantastic game and it’s really hard to pick between the two sides, despite Chelsea Heights not having lost to Keysborough this season.

The question for the minor premiers is what have they done since they played their last game of football, all the way back on August 19, having had two byes in a row.

The other question is how much can Keysborough take advantage of the any slow start Chelsea Heights may have because of the extended break?

For Keysborough, can former captain Ryan Goodes make a return from a facial injury and can they nullify the Heighters’ power forwards?

All these questions will be answered on Saturday when the two sides fight it out for a spot in the Grand Final.

Beginning with Chelsea Heights, the big show Phil Smith is the key player to watch, having booted 60 goals in 15 matches to lead the league.

While Smith has been the focal point, club stalwart Phil Matheson is one of my personal favourite players and always dangerous as a lead up option while James Robertson and Matthew Baxter have enjoyed good years.

Through the midfield Nathan Herrington has been outstanding and is one to watch come League Best & Fairest night, while Jarryd Uren and Jordan Peryman are also dangerous.

The likes of Joel Williams and Michael Shaw have also enjoyed positive seasons.

For the Burra, they were well served by the Werner combination in light of the league’s second leading goal kicker in Chris Byran missing out.

Geoff Humphreys has had a fantastic season and is lively around goals while Daniel Morland continues to impress with his work ethic alongside Jake D’Atri.

With each side boasting key forwards capable of kicking a bag, the result of this game will come down to which midfield can with the slog through the middle.

Chelsea Heights by 10 points.

First Semi Final – Saturday 10 September

DIVISION 2: THE INNER SANCTUM / JASON BARBIN DIVISION 2: THE INNER SANCTUM / JASON BARBIN@JBarbin10 @JBarbin10

Caulfield v Murrumbeena (Power Reserve)

Previous results: Round 3 – Caulfield 9.9 (63) def Murrumbeena 7.6 (48) at Murrumbeena Park

Round 14 – Caulfield 10.8 (68) def Murrumbeena 8.6 (54) at Koornang Park Reserve

Another match that’s set up to be one to go down to the wire, these two sides have had some ripping battles during the past couple of seasons.

While Caulfield has had the wood over Murrumbeena during their meetings this season, Murrumbeena may in better form coming off wins in their last seven games.

In fact, the Beena’s last loss was against the Bears in Round 14.

So the big question is can Murrumbeena translate its excellent form into a win against a side that will desperately be avoiding going out in straight sets?

As we have seen throughout the season, Caulfield doesn’t rely on one big power forward to kick all its goals, instead relying on balance and sharing the load to kick a winning score.

Chris Dove and Tom Heagney are the Bears’ leading goal scorers with 26 and 19 goals apiece and both have been amongst the club’s better players throughout the season.

Jake Buggy was in good form during the Qualifying Final last week and will be another to keep an eye on, as well as the likes of Brandon Turner, Chris Lewis and Harris Lanyon.

Murrumbeena was able to scrape out a win against Skye in the Elimination Final, though it took one last heave to get the job done.

If the Beena are going to do the same on Sunday they need to play four quarters of good football and will need to be more accurate in front of goal.

That’s where Alaster Bradley comes in.

Murrumbeena’s leading goal kicker for the year with 29, Bradley was best on ground during the win against the Bombers as a focal point inside 50.

Captain Mitch Walder also chipped in with three goals after a return from injury and his leadership will be vital for his side.

Gun midfielder Jake Semmel was somewhat quiet against Skye, but don’t count on it happening two weeks in a row, and he works best alongside Chris Evans and Darcy Hargrave.

Two clubs will everything on the line will play one of the fiercest matches of the season and the result will no doubt be a thriller.

Murrumbeena by three points.

FINALS WEEK 2 REVIEW

Second Semi Final

Hallam 7.5 (47) def by Endeavour Hills 9.9 (63) With a Grand Final berth on offer, an exhilarating contest hung in the balance entering time on in the final term.

So often the most anticipated matches fail to deliver, but Endeavour Hills and Hallam provided a spectacle that will long be remembered.

A classy snap from Phil Ward brought Hallam back within five points at the 15-minute mark of the last quarter.

The Hawks had led by a goal at the final change and coach Scott Slater urged his players to beat the Falcons for the first time this year. He was concerned the Hawks needed to win more centre clearances.

Slater implored his players to put their heads over the ball and prevent their opponents seizing the initiative. However, it was Endeavour Hills that made the early running in the final stanza.

A goal a couple of minutes in levelled the scores.

Star Falcon Daniel Batson then earned a holding the ball free kick and made no mistake with the resultant set shot, giving Endeavour Hills the lead.

Minutes later, Falcons’ skipper Nathan Strom ran into an open goal putting his side 11 points ahead.

That is when Ward stepped up.

His snapped goal was immediately followed by another Hallam forward surge, instigated by a long Manny Peresso kick.

As it had done on many occasions, the efficient Endeavour Hills’ defence repelled the Hawks’ assault. Hallam kept applying pressure and the Falcons continued to resist.

A couple of late Falcons’ goals put the outcome beyond doubt and Endeavour Hills celebrated a 16-point victory and a Grand Final spot.

Shaun Richards was outstanding all day and was a major reason the Falcons trailed by just 10 points at half time.

Richards’ second quarter was a stunning football exhibition as he cleared the ball from defence with extraordinary regularity.

His coach Rob Dipper spoke on The 5th Quarter radio show and discussed the contribution of his blonde number 21 to the team and the versatility he provides.

“Shauny Richards has been really good all year. He’s only ever played forward at the club and I could see something else in him.”

Dipper identified Richards’ long kicking and ability to take intercept marks as attributes that would stand him in good stead in defence. He noted Richards and Daniel Strom are working effectively in partnership and that both have been excellent in the Falcons’ finals campaign.

Defensive resilience was the key to Endeavour Hills working its way into the contest after failing to capitalise on a strong wind advantage in the first term.

By quarter time an accurate Hallam had grabbed its

opportunities up forward, booting four goals straight into the difficult breeze.

At that point the Falcons looked in trouble, having managed just 2.3 to trail by 9 points.

Dipper showed no signs of panic at the huddle, maintaining his quietly spoken manner. His message was hard to hear for anyone outside the playing group, but his side’s response for the rest of the game suggests his communication style hit the mark.

18-year-old Nick Gay was a central figure in the Falcons’ win, marking at both ends of the ground and covering a lot of territory.

Byron Hoe and Batson were again big contributors for Endeavour Hills.

Many of the usual stars stood out for the defeated Hallam.

Manny Peresso, Ward and Daniel Chin excelled.

16-year-old Hawk Chris Raso did plenty to suggest he has a big future and Rory McIvor was another solid performer for Hallam.

Slater’s expectation that he may be able to name a full list was dashed with Steve Chin having a sore hamstring and Justin Marriott and Steve Sigeti unwell. But he wasn’t making any excuses.

“Endeavour Hills played a great brand of footy and deserved to be there. So we need to lift our game this week and hopefully have another crack at them in a couple of weeks,” he said.

There is every chance Hallam and Endeavour Hills will meet one more time this year on the day that matters most, giving the Hawks a chance for revenge against a club that has had their measure in all three meetings this year.

First Semi Final

Ashwood 9.12 (66) def by Doveton Eagles 14.14 (98) The final score fails to reflect what was a gripping Semi Final contest between Ashwood and Doveton.

A 32-point win to the Eagles was a harsh result for an Ashwood team that was right in the game until the halfway point of the final term.

Doveton was a deserving winner, but was made to work hard by a Magpies’ group that played as a team and showed real spirit.

Michael Callinan was a decisive presence for the Eagles creating opportunities with his marking and attacking play. The greater the pressure in the match, the more Callinan lifted and inspired his teammates.

In his quarter time address, Ashwood coach Mick Rossborough highlighted the fact Callinan was a focal point for the Eagles to bring the ball through the centre of the ground.

The Magpies were unable to quell Callinan’s influence in the midfield. He finished with three goals, as did Eagles’ teammate Enayte Samadi.

The match provided a marked contrast to Ashwood’s disappointing display in its Qualifying Final loss to Endeavour Hills.

Mitch Saunders’ return to the Ashwood side was one reason for the Magpies’ improvement. Rossborough praised Saunders’

DIVISION 3: MAN ON THE MARK / ANDREW PALOCZI @Apaloczi

ability to play a major role despite having a torn medial ligament in his knee that requires post-season surgery.

It was the Magpies who started the match brightly and registered the first goal and they retained the lead for most of the first quarter.

With rain falling, Doveton dribbled through a goal to hit the lead just before the first break. However, by half time the Eagles’ advantage was 20 points.

They appeared well placed despite an injury to Russell Robertson late in the second stanza that prevented the ex-AFL star taking any further part in the contest.

When Doveton booted the first major of the second half it seized a 28-point lead, threatening to put the result beyond doubt.

Such was the response from Ashwood that by time on it had a golden opportunity to hit the front.

However, Frank Martinicchio’s shot on the run from close range cannoned into the post, leaving the Magpies a point behind.

A late Corrie Wilson goal then gave the Eagles breathing space with an eight-point lead at the final change.

At three quarter time, Doveton coach Simon Caldwell stressed the need for his players to lift their intensity.

“I spoke to the guys about their tackle pressure. We’d been really good all day and then we dropped off. We had half the amount of tackles we’d had in the other quarters in that third quarter,” he said.

Doveton laid just nine tackles in that term.

Ashwood never gave up, but was unable to bridge the gap and Doveton eventually took charge after applying relentless pressure.

The Eagles reached their tackling benchmark of 18 to 20 a quarter in the final term as they did throughout the first half.

Adam Read was a major contributor for Doveton and booted a couple of goals.

Magpie Josh Stanton worked tirelessly throughout the match helping keep his side in touch.

Veteran Paul Wineberg was another solid contributor for Ashwood, both in the ruck and around the ground.

But it was Doveton’s day.

Rossborough conceded the Eagles were too good, being the better side for longer periods and capitalising when the Magpies dropped off a little.

Doveton will take on Hallam for a chance to meet Endeavour Hills in the grand final.

FINALS WEEK 3 PREVIEW

Preliminary Final – Saturday 9th September

Hallam vs Doveton Eagles (Keysborough Reserve) Hallam coach Scott Slater says that despite a Semi Final loss to Endeavour Hills the equation remains the same for the Hawks.

They came into the finals series needing to win twice to lift the cup and that still holds true.

This week’s challenge comes in the form of a confident Doveton.

The Eagles backed up an Elimination Final win over Black Rock with a hard-earned victory against Ashwood.

Hallam won both clashes with Doveton during the home and away season, triumphing by just nine points in the most recent meeting.

Little can be read into the other 2017 encounter between the sides when a significantly understrength Doveton proved no match for the Hawks in Round 6. On that occasion, the margin was 79 points and the SFNL radio team was left to rue selecting the game as the Match of the Round.

There should be no concern about a one-sided affair this time. Both teams are in good form and it will be a tough stoush.

Slater expects the game to be played hard but in good spirits, in what is a local derby.

“We get along pretty well as clubs, Doveton and Hallam,” he says.

Whichever way the result goes the sides will enjoy a few beers together when the battle is over.

Doveton coach Simon Caldwell expects the key to his side’s chances will be its ability to shut down the game when Hallam gets momentum.

He says the Eagles’ ability to maintain tackling pressure will determine whether or not they can achieve that.

Caldwell contrasts his side with the other remaining premiership contenders.

“We’re the odds ones out. They’re very similar Hallam and Endeavour Hills, how much they run. We’re probably a bit more of an inside team.”

He believes the fact a number of Eagles’ players have played in a premiership may prove a decisive factor in such a high-pressure game.

Doveton was straight down to the beach after its Semi Final win so the players could soak in the bay’s healing waters. But Caldwell won’t be using a six-day break as an excuse if Hallam comes out on top.

The Hawks have an extra day’s rest, a fair outcome given they finished top of the table.

Caldwell will be delighted if forecast showers in the lead up to the game come to fruition, believing a slower game will suit the Eagles.

Hallam should be able to recall midfielder Justin Marriott, forward Steve Sigeti and backman Steve Chin who were unavailable against Endeavour Hills.

There is a question mark on the fitness of Doveton’s ex-Melbourne veteran Russell Robertson who looked in considerable discomfort just prior to half time against Ashwood.

He didn’t return to the field for the remainder of the game.

Caldwell concedes Robertson has a few niggles and was badly winded but downplayed suggestions he suffered a rib injury.

Expect Hallam to get home in another entertaining clash in what is proving to be an absorbing finals series.

The Bloods will be refreshed and will rely on the strong midfield core.

The Oaks come to the Preliminary Final with their strongest squad of the season, allowing flexibility at both ends of the ground.

It is nearly impossible to pick a winner in this game but will go with the fresher side.

UNDER 19 RESULTS: FINALS WEEK 1

QUALIFYING FINAL 1

St Kilda City 4.15-39 defeated Dingley 1.2-8 Reigning premiers St Kilda City have fast tracked their premiership pursuit in a comfortable defeat over a disappointing Dingley.

After an impressive win over St Pauls in Round 18, a lack of scoreboard pressure saw the Dingoes unable to back up their efforts against September specialists City.

Early inaccuracies from City in the first term (1.6) prevented what could have been an almost instant nail in the coffin for their opponents. The Dingoes trailed by six points at the first break, with Luke Simmonds kicking what no one knew would be Dingley’s only goal for the game.

Dingley required spark in the second term, but any hope of such was quickly fizzled by an opening goal from City’s Jackson Vargas. The leading side piled on another two goals in a damaging quarter for the Dingoes, who with one point scored, trailed by 19 at the main break.

A formidable City defence restricted Dingley to another single-point quarter in the third. Led by best on ground Shai Wood, City began to break away and extend the margin to 31 points late in the third term before an injury to a Saints player brought an early ending to the contest. The win was subsequently awarded to St Kilda City.

Despite the unfortunate conclusion to the match, City were ultimately too strong on the day for the Dingoes, however, a second chance for Dingley this week leaves a rematch on the cards.

Loch O’Halloran was Dingley’s best, followed by Taj Lewis. Oliver Woods was a standout for a powerful City side that, despite inaccuracies, set a top example of what their next challengers will face in the coming weeks.

QUALIFYING FINAL 2

Hallam 10.10-70 def Cheltenham 5.14-44 A comeback match from Hallam has sent Cheltenham to a knock out final this week, taking the win by 26 points at Power Reserve.

Tom Davis and Ben Clark-Henry opened the game with a goal each for the Rosellas, and kicked off a convincing a 15-point lead to Hallam’s one point going into the first break.

The second term saw Hallam with their first goal of the game and five behinds, and Alex Molyneux was impressive for Cheltenham. A score of 1.3 for the Rosellas maintained their lead, with Hallam trailing by 12 points approaching the main break.

A massive third quarter unleashed a firing Hallam outfit, who stunned the previously leading Rosellas with a five-goal haul, effectively swinging momentum their way. Four points up going into the last quarter, Hallam looked threatening as Cheltenham needed to regroup to avoid a loss and elimination round.

The final term saw no stopping from Hallam, as they preceded to run down the Rosellas with another four goals. Led by best on ground Samuel Delosa, and an unforgiving Jordan Cowling with four goals to his name, Hallam were at their finest here and Cheltenham were simply unable to provide a response.

A 26-point victory guarantees Hallam with a rest this week, and

sends Cheltenham to the chopping block as they utilise their second chance.

ELIMINATION FINAL 1

Oakleigh District 19.15-129 defeated Skye 2.3-16 Skye suffered from a tough ending to their finals series, going down by 113 points at the hands of Oakleigh District.

Dylan Duffield starred for Oakleigh in their triumphant win, which saw Skye scoreless in the first term in contrast to Oakleigh’s score of 3.5.

Skye managed to get their first goal on the board in the second term, but their efforts were no match for a determined Oakleigh, who booted another 3.2, extending their lead to 36 points at the main break.

Oakleigh put on a show in the third term with eight goals to one, and despite best efforts from Skye’s Ryan Dawson and Taylor Hughes, continued to put their foot down with a damaging run home in the final term.

Liam McCabe, Daniel West and Nathan Peddle were nightmares for Skye with a combined effort of ten goals, in a deserving victory bringing Oakleigh one step further towards finals glory.

ELIMINATION FINAL 2

Parkmore/Springvale Districts 5.14-44 defeated St Pauls 2.1-13 Parkmore/Springvale have scored their seat in the Semi Finals following a 31-point victory over St Pauls.

Ben Ekeroma and Robert Lega Frost were no friends of St Pauls, who struggled in attack with a finishing score of just 13 points. With only three goals scored between the teams at half time, the game was seemingly up for grabs by any side as Parkmore / Springvale led 19-7.

However, it was in the third quarter where Parkmore / Springvale gained a considerable margin, booting 3.3 to St Pauls’ 1.0. With Parkmore / Springvale leading 40 to 13 at three quarter time, a low scoring final term failed to impact the result, with St Pauls’ season being effectively cut short and going down by 31.

Jack Lewis-Smith was impactful in the forward line with three goals for Parkmore / Springvale, and Ryan Kreymborg was a highlight for St Pauls.

SEMI FINALS PREVIEW Hallam and St Kilda City will sit back and watch the action unfold between their potential rivals this week, as they are due to reappear in the Preliminary Finals.

SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER A second chance for Dingley will see them clash with a confident Oakleigh, after their big win against Skye. It is do or die for both sides, who will meet at Springvale Reserve at 9.45.

SUNDAY 10 SEPTEMBER After defeating St Pauls, Parkmore/Springvale will challenge Cheltenham in the round’s second battle for a ticket to the Preliminary Finals. A last chance for both sides, there will be nothing left on the field in this match taking place at Springvale Reserve, 9.45.

SUPPORTING THE SFNL AND LOCAL SPORTING CLUBS

The pressure is on today with Grand Final spots on the line for both clubs and umpires. The Division 3 Grand Final appointments will be announced on Thursday night after training and we will celebrate them with dinner in the clubrooms.

Season 2017 has been one of the most successful on record from an umpiring point of view. Our numbers have never been better and this has enabled us to run 235 Three Field Umpire games which are now the norm in SFNL senior footy rather than the exception.

With the introduction of the SFNL Women’s Competition, there are now 496 finals appointments available for those umpires who have put in during the season. Just last week, 168 appointments were made across the four venues in Seniors, Reserves, Under 19s, Thirds and the Women’s finals. With many of our umpires involved in SMJFL finals we were certainly stretched – however the feedback has been very positive.

A feature of season 2017 has been the extraordinary improvement amongst our younger umpires. Last Saturday in the Under 19s Final the average of the panel was 15 and in the Div 1 Final, if goal umpire Sharpy is excluded, the average age of the remainder of the panel was 18. Of course, we have a wonderful mix of experience and youth and regardless of age the best umpires will be appointed.

Our development pathway from the Juniors has never been stronger and after 2017, we are very well placed to move forward next year. Twenty-two new umpires have tasted senior footy in the field for the first time and during the finals many debutants will officiate in the three disciplines.

At our meetings, our group has set its 2017 values and the mantra is to do our job to the best of our ability; to get it right; to work as a team; and to let ‘em play footy. Over the finals, we need to continue to show composure, provide presence and take control when required, which is pretty important. So far we have delivered on our mantra and we must continue to do over the next three weeks.

At the start of the season, four SFNL umpires made the jump to the next level by joining VFL Development Squads – Matt Mahoney, Cam Watts, Joel Davis and Tayla Manning. Joel got a late call-up to VFL senior footy in the last round – a great effort in his first season – and also umpired six Development League games. Cam and Tayla also tasted Development League footy. These four umpires joined nine others from our ranks

in umpiring at higher levels in 2017. Annie Mirabile and Nick Bridges made it onto VFL Senior Squads for the first time. Both umpired their first VFL senior games in the same round in May, with Annie doing 11 all up, and Nick eight. Luke Porter was named on the Senior Development Squad, and umpired eight Development League games. There was fanfare around the inaugural AFLW competition, and Annie Mirabile and Libby Toovey got to be part of it by umpiring a number of AFLW games. It’s been a long season since the AFLW kicked off in February. Several other former SFLUA umpires have been at state league level for some time, and might not be known to a lot of our younger umpires: John Cooper has again made the VFL senior finals panel, and is closing in on 100 VFL senior games (on 95 at the end of the home & away rounds); Dean Jones has now done over 300 games at state league level, including 171 VFL senior games; and Courtney Lai (61 AFL games), Dan Wilson (219) and Rob Haala (304) continue to umpire at the highest level. Courtney suffered a horrific knee injury in a collision with Liam Picken some years ago but fought his way back onto the AFL senior list. He has recently announced his retirement from the AFL, and we may be able to persuade him to come “home” next season.

Borgie, Stewie, Brendan Serle and Steve Castersen officiated at the annual Dads Footy Cup at Murphy Reserve last Saturday and noticed some celebrity players including Peter Daicos, Anthony Koutoufides, Michael Gale, James Tompkins (awesome foursome member) and Damien Oliver on the park. After 18 matches involving 12 schools across two ovals, the dads of Hampton won the final defeating the dads of Port Melbourne. After the match, the Port Melbourne Primary School principal slumped dejected in the change-rooms while his players tried to console him. “Don’t worry, Pete”, his players said, “It wasn’t your umpiring that cost us the final”.

Appointments for Umpires being selected to umpire in a Grand Final in the last week of the season will be announced at the SFNL Umpiring Grand Final Appointments Night, which is being held from 7pm on Wednesday September 20 at the Huntingdale Golf Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh. Awards for Best First Year (Field, Boundary, Goal), Most Improved (Field, Boundary, Goal) and the Golden Whistle Award, together with Umpires Association Awards, will be announced.

Remember that:

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES

BENTLEIGH By James Kiernan

It was a mixed bag with both our seniors and reserves having made finals.

There were no second chances for our seniors this year, as after finishing fourth we played East Malvern in an elimination final. As to be expected it was an ugly, intense, four-quarter battle in which we lead the whole way; although never by more than three goals as our opponents refused to give in. With a fragile 12 point lead at three-quarter-time the Demons really turned up the screws in the final quarter and gave East Malvern

no room to move, as we laid tackle

after tackle and grinded our way to a

20-point victory. Full-forward Matt

Troutbeck’s six goals and Mitchell

Smart’s relentless ruck work led us

to victory and kept our season alive.

We now move on to take on St Pauls

in what promises to be an epic rivalry

game.

Our reserves finished third on the

ladder and had earned a second

chance in finals, unfortunately we

would need it in the qualifying final.

After a slow start and some incredibly

straight goal kicking from our

opponents, we found ourselves behind

early and at halftime our deficit was 31 points. We battled back and clawed our way to a three-goal game in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t go all the way, ultimately falling short and going down by 37 points. Our reserves will live to fight another day and next will play Mordialloc in the elimination semi-final.

Much appreciated sponsors of the week:

DINGLEYOur netballers delivered the goods in spades in season 2017 with no less than six sides in grand finals for two premiership cups for the cabinet. Congratulations to all concerned, especially to the victors in divisions three and four. The ladies soldiered on late into the night on grand final night to celebrate their fantastic seasons.

Congratulations to all, and especially to our own superstar Alicia Wise, named in the division one team of the year.

Whilst I have singled Alicia out for that special mention, our ranks are filled with dedicated, talented and committed players who will be striving for even more success in 2018.

Likewise, well done to all our junior teams, many of whom have brought home premierships, trophies and individual honours. Our congratulations go out, not only

to all the players running around, but to all team managers, coaches, runners, waterpersons, trainers, etc, who give freely of their time to get the job done.

Having “been there, done that”, I understand that at times, getting young players organised, feels like you are herding cats, but the rewards are worth every hour spent at it.

The fruit of the labours of our junior club is the continual feed of terrific young players into our senior teams.

Twenty five of the thirty five players who represented the senior team this year were products of our juniors, including our inspirational skippers, Jackson Peet and Travis La Rocca. That’s what junior football is all about.

Last week, we saw the unusual situation where the under 19 first qualifying final against St Kilda City was called off due to a serious injury to a St Kilda City lad. The game was quite rightly awarded to St Kilda

City who were ahead at the time. Lets hope he recovers quickly and is playing again soon.

The other side in action last week was Spud’s thirds who unfortunately went down to Skye.

This week we turn out attention to the senior second semi final against Mordialloc, who overcame St Pauls last week.

As Shane pointed out after round eighteen, “the season starts now”, and we are as prepared as we can possibly be for the challenge. We have either two games to play or three to win another flag. We are hoping it will be just two.

Our reserves face off against Cheltenham, who always seem to grow an extra leg at this time of the year.

We deserved top spot and hope to go on with it.

Good luck to all.

Go Dingoes.

MORDIALLOCIt was a great weekend for the club as both our mens football sides tasted victory at Springvale against St Pauls. The seniors played for a shot at Dingley and the chance to be first into the grand final, and Tub started well by winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the first term. A return of two goals five wasn’t indicative of our dominance, although keeping St Pauls to two points still gave us the advantage. With Dan Nicholls dominating however, we kicked the first three goals at the non-scoring end before the Bulldogs came into the game to go in only 21 points down. A tight third term meant we were only to extend our lead by another nine points, and we knew St Pauls would come again, but an early period of Saints dominance could only net them

four points, and two more steadying goals gave us victory by 74-33. Steve Tolongs with three and Scott Bradley with two were our multiple goalkickers, with Matt Ravenall, Justin Summons and Chris Brooking among our best players.

The seconds played on Sunday knowing that there was no tomorrow for the losers, and it’s fair to say that a scoreless first quarter was not what we had in mind. The important thing was that we kept St Pauls to two goals, and though we only kicked two of our own in the second quarter we were also to keep St Pauls scoreless to go into the main break a point to the good. A fine effort in the third term led to our kicking the only two goals of the day to the grandstand end. This was to prove the gamebreaker, as it meant that we went into the last change level kicking with the breeze

in the last quarter. Whilst a return of two goals seven wasn’t ideal despite the tricky conditions, we kept the Saints to a solitary point to run out winners by 48-30. Al Pike was our talisman on the day with four goals, with Scott Pitura, Nick Fitzgerald and Luke Ardrey in our best.

This weekend is huge for the club. The seniors play in the second semi-final against our old foes Dingley at Springvale on Saturday at 2.15. The reserves play for their season in the first semi final against Bentleigh at Springvale on Sunday at noon. And the ladies are back in action in their preliminary final against Oakleigh District at Clayton on Saturday at 2.00. A win will give the girls a berth in the first ever SFNL womens grand final. So, club members, let’s get out on the weekend and support the troops. Go Mordi!!!

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES

ST PAULS U19 Sponsored by Bendigo Bank Ormond-McKinnon After an even first term we only managed one more goal for the match whilst PSD had another 14 attempts for 4 majors

Our best were Ryan Kremma Josh and Nick. Over the last 8 weeks we had limited numbers which made it difficult to go deep into September

Reserves Sponsored by JBS Hospitality We were well in the game til half time, but costly turnover in Q3 allowed Mordi to get 2 goals against the strong breeze while we only scored 2 with it.

We were beaten in the ruck and centre clearances and held to 3 behinds

in the last term - Mordi winning comfortably.

Jack, Jake and Ben Thorson our best and good workouts for Harley and Mike Johnstone.

Seniors Sponsored by onePaper Industries Ltd. Early play was very congested til Mordi scored a goal, followed by a long period where we found it difficult to open up play. Only 2 behinds to 2.5 at quarter time and we lost Josh for the day.

Mordi goaled from a free for a 21 point lead. We had chances but could not convert.

They opened up play with good handball and goaled again. Late in the quarter a run of good teamwork saw

O-dog goal from the pocket, a minute later he missed on the run.

A great goal by Kremma saw us 21 points down at half time.

Play see-sawed for 10 minutes of 3rd term til Gilder ran into open goal for our 3rd.

Mordi replied in kind, then goaled again from a free in front. However our next goal was countered by Mordi with a mark and true kick on 3/4 time.

We kept trying in the last term but Mordi were too good and ran out 40 point winners.

Our best - Wil Clarke, Kremma, and Gilder. Good support from T Mac Knox and Spencer.

Will re-group to face Bentleigh

MURRUMBEENAWe ventured to Meade Reserve to take on Keysborough in the Reserves in an elimination final. We were out of the blocks early with 3 on the board in the first 10 and yes all 3 to Rhysy. Keysie came back in the second with 4 of their own to level it up at the long break. We held Keysie goalless in the second half, kicking 3 of our own to come away with a hard fought 16 point victory to take on Highett this week. Will Voorham was sensational all day as was Schmieds and Smithy stood up when it counted. Congratulations to Mick McMahon on his 50th club game last week

The Seniors took on Skye in

what was always going to be a torrid affair. Kicking with the breeze in the first Skye brought the pressure and held us out quite well. The second was an arm wrestle as we held a 3 point lead at the long break. Skye maintained the pressure in the third holding us goalless to take a 4 point lead into the last. This is where we played our best footy for the game slamming home 6 majors to Skye’s one to come away with a 21 point win and book a second final against the Bears. Mitch slotted home 3, with all our backs holding their opponents. Saucy did a job on one of their keys and Batty presented all day.

Rory Cahalane will be playing his 50th club game this weekend.

Thanks to all our supporters, runners, trainers and water persons.

The Beena Women head down to Meade Reserve Clayton this Saturday to play their Preliminary final against East Brighton with kick off at 12 noon. Be great to see as many supporters down there to cheer the girls on!

DIVISION 3: CLUB NOTES

ASHWOOD After our loss last week it was a prelim spot up for the winners. The first quarter against Doveton was very even with our defence standing tall with Josh Stanton a standout. He used the ball well and was well backed up by Matt Maginnes across half back. We let ourselves down in the second quarter and went into the long break 20 points down. In the third quarter we showed some real fight and Mason Morgan led the way with an inspirational act when he went with the flight of ball and was crunched but got up for the next contest which resulted in a goal. Unfortunately we tired in the last quarter and Doveton were able to come away with the chocolates. Paul Wineberg took over the ruck duties when Matt Menzies was unavailable and did a great job giving our mids of Gavin Mahony and Ryan Forsyth first use. Jeremy Nelson played a great defensive role on the day and although hampered by injury Mitch Saunders was still a handy player as was skipper Dale Carroll. Unfortunately we bowed out of the finals but Mick and the coaching staff should be very proud of what was achieved.

ASHWOOD RESERVE REPORT Following our stirring win last week at Keysborough we travelled to Cheltenham full of confidence to take on Hallam who gave us a bit of a touch up early in the season. With 3 handy inclusions in Hempill, Salama and Burkwood and 12 changes overall to last time we played them we knew we had the cattle out there to succeed.

Hallam kicked with a 4 goal wind and was in command early with 5 majors as we battled hard for our 2 majors which wasn’t a bad result if we could use the wind ourselves.

Hallam threw man back and held us to just one and the writing was on the wall. Third quarter and the Hawks took control of the game through their run and the lead was out to 40 points with 10 mins still to go in the quarter as their talls dominated.

Cometh the hour and cometh the man as Jim conjured up a couple of miracles and then took advantage of our ruck dominance to get us going out the middle. With the “hole” now filled by the ruckman, run from behind being created by the backline and Willo taking control of his opponent we had the momentum switch required.

Now to the scoring end it was all Ashwood and in a great team quarter we stormed home to win it by 9 points in a sensational game of footy to watch.

Team Ashwood is our saying and Team Ashwood it was and coach Nelson could not have been prouder.

With the prospect of A couple to be added to the squad and a weeks break to work on our skills and freshen up put Cheltenham September 16 in your diary and BE THERE!!

Thanks to all the training staff, volunteers and supporters for their efforts over a long weekend for our club.

AROUND THE GROUND With the finals still active it’s business as usual for training with as many expected to get out on the track and help out.

Socially speaking continue to listen to Punter regarding vote count day and start to get your name and tables together for presentation nite.
