It’s Grand Final time... On behalf of the SFNL Board and Administration, I extend congratulations to all the clubs that are represented in a SFNL Grand Final this weekend or participated in one last weekend.
Firstly, well done and congratulations to the Doveton Eagles Football Club for winning the Bendigo Bank Dingley Village Division 3 Senior Grand Final last weekend. What an amazing game it was that had so many momentum shifts which kept the fans engaged all day! Full credit to Endeavour Hills Football Club who had a fantastic season and secured the Division 3 Reserve premiership. No doubt they will come again in 2018 and we congratulate their Seniors on a wonderful season and final series.
Earlier in the day we started with the inaugural Women’s Football Grand Final where after a closely contested first half, Murrumbeena pulled away over local rival Oakleigh District. Well done to Murrumbeena President Fred Hargrave, Coach Emrys Lloyd-Griffiths and all their support staff on going through undefeated and awarded the title of premiers and champions. It was so satisfying seeing all these girls participate in their first season of football with the SFNL. Congratulations must again go out to all clubs that fielded women’s football teams in 2017. A special mention to Cheltenham and Keysborough who did a wonderful job hosting the four weeks of finals.
On to this weekend, we have 11 clubs represented in 12 spots and overall we have had 15 clubs represented in
18 Grand Final positions, which is very pleasing to see so many clubs tasting the premiership dream.
Division 1 Senior - Dingley v Mordialloc Congratulations to Dingley who have made their fourth straight Division 1 Senior Grand Final and looking for a three-peat while Mordialloc have made the Grand Final twice in the last three years, after only being promoted from Division 2 in 2014. A special mention to our wonderful finals venue hosts in Springvale Districts, who have continued to put on a great event every finals day and we thank them for their amazing effort.
Bendigo Bank Dingley Villlage Division 2 Senior – Chelsea Heights v Murrumbeena Congratulations to the entire team at Chelsea Heights on making the Bendigo Bank Dingley Village Division 2 Senior Grand Final. They have all worked so hard in the last few years to build the club on and off the field. Murrumbeena are a wonderful story where they might be on verge of doing something special for their senior coach in Steve Wright. Steve is coaching his last game in the League on Saturday before relocating down to Phillip Island. Steve has been a wonderful Southern supporter for so many years. Thanks to Doveton Eagles and Clayton for being great hosts of this division’s Finals Series.
Under 19 – St Kilda City v Oakleigh District Well done to St Kilda City eyeing their fifth Under 19 premiership in the last nine years and also looking for the three-peat. Oakleigh District advance to their first Under 19 Grand Final since the SFNL re-established the competition back in 2008.
I hope all clubs, officials, players and fans have enjoyed their season of Southern Football and Netball and we look forward to seeing you all again for a bigger and better season 2018.
Very best wishes to all our grand finalists this weekend – good luck!

PLAYER OF THE DAY
The versatile big man was instrumental in the Dingoes’ comprehensive Preliminary Final victory over Bentleigh last Sunday. An imposing presence in the forward half, Ades took plenty of strong grabs, including several contested marks, and constantly drove the footy deep into attack. He also provided ample support as a back-up ruckman for Chris Morgan and competed well in the air against Bentleigh star Mitchell Smart. Ades had been in terrific form throughout the 2017, and is one of several players capable of standing up and turning it on in the big dance.
Congratulations, Danny!

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTER
Dingley 15.15 (105) def Bentleigh 6.7 (43) The Dingoes are through to their fourth consecutive Division 1 Senior Grand Final after thrashing Bentleigh by 62 points at Springvale Reserve.
After a disappointing loss to Mordialloc in last week’s Second Semi Final, the Dingoes were keen to make amends. And they certainly succeeded, seizing control of the contest from quarter time and ensuring they enter next week’s decider with confidence restored.
The opening stanza was for the most part a tough and physical encounter, with Bentleigh’s relentless attack on the footy giving them the upper hand in the contest. Although Dingley were the first to hit the scoreboard with a goal into the breeze within the first 90 seconds, the Demons hit back with three majors of their own to put a gap on their opponents.
Chris Horton-Milne goaled in time on to bring keep the Dingoes in touch, but the Demons nevertheless entered quarter time with a seven-point advantage.
But any hopes of a tight contest quickly evaporated as Dingley flicked the switch in the second term and, with the aid of the wind, simply ran the tired Bentleigh off their feet.
The Dingoes’ famed run and spread that was so lacking last week was back on display, and the Demons had no answered for their dominance on the outside.
Tearaway winger Lucas Walmsley got the better of his direct opponent in Kayne O’Brien, and racked up plenty of possessions around the ground, while up forward Daniel Farmer broke the game open with two classy goals.
As a result, the Dingoes piled on 5.6 to just one behind in a dominant quarter of football, and by the major break had opened up a commanding 28-point lead.
With their season on the line, Bentleigh upped their pressure and intensity at the contest in the premiership quarter and refused to allow the Dingoes as to win as much outside ball. The result was 20-odd minutes of scrappy, high-pressure football littered with turnovers, a far cry from the frenetic pace of the term prior.
However, Dingley absorbed the pressure and Bentleigh could make no inroads into the margin, despite the aid of the breeze. Consequently, the third-term stalemate had the reigning premiers in the box seat at the final change.
Dingley then put the tiring Demons to the sword in the final term, booting six goals to ensure a commanding victory and keep their dream of a premiership hat trick well and truly alive.
It was a performance that was bore no resemblance to their 10-goal loss a week earlier. While plenty of Dingoes had their colours lowered against the Bloods that day, there were no passengers on Sunday in what was a complete team performance that would have given coach Shane Morwood plenty of reasons to smile.
In particular, Dingley co-captain Jackson Peet was a class above through the midfield, racking up a stack of possessions and finishing with three goals in a dominant display. He had plenty of help, though, with Walmsley, Chris Horton-Milne and Josh Ellis all working tirelessly in the engine room.
Young Kristen Feehan was assigned the difficult task of manning the dangerous Matt Troutbeck, and handled it with aplomb, keeping the star spearhead goalless and largely unsighted for the day.
Big men Chris Morgan and Danny Ades were pillars of strength, both in the ruck and around the ground, while Travis La Rocca was again superb in the back half, especially in the pressure-cooker third term.
Winners for Bentleigh, however, were more difficult to find.
Tom Massey stood up through the midfield in Sam McGarry’s absence, winning plenty of footy and competing hard around the contest. He also provided one of the highlights of the day with his stunning goal from the boundary line in the first term, which gave his teammates a visible lift.
Man-mountain Mitchell Smart did a tremendous job rucking solo all day, while Michael Rogers also did a reasonable job on Cal McQueen, despite the League’s leading goalkicker finishing with three majors.
The usual suspects in Scott Lawry, Jackson Meredith and Brody Lawford were also prominent.

DIVISION 1: GRAND FINAL PREVIEW / WILL HUNTERDIVISION 1: GRAND FINAL PREVIEW / WILL HUNTER
Dingley V Mordialloc (Springvale Reserve)
Sunday 24 September, 2:40pm
Previous Meetings: Second Semi Final – Dingley 6.14 (52) def by Mordialloc 18.4 (112)
Round 13 – Dingley 12.7 (79) def Mordialloc 10.13 (73)
Round 4 – Mordialloc 8.6 (54) def Dingley 7.10 (52)
Season 2017 has been one of the most intriguing in years, and fittingly it will be the two best sides in Dingley and Mordialloc that will go head to head for the ultimate prize in Sunday’s Division Senior Grand Final.
For the Dingoes, Sunday marks their fourth straight appearance in the Division 1 decider, and it is just one victory away from become the first side since the all-conquering Balwyn in 2000 – and just the second in Southern League history – to claim a premiership three-peat.
Mordialloc, meanwhile, is also no stranger to the big dance, with the then Sam Anstey-led side reaching three consecutive deciders between 2013 and 2015, including the 2014 Division 2 premiership.
Both clubs have forged a healthy competition with each other over the last three seasons. Since Mordialloc’s promotion into Division 1 in 2015, the two sides have faced off eight times – including in that season’s Grand Final – with four of these matches decided by less than a goal.
Consequently, few Southern League matched generate more excitement than the Dingley V Mordialloc blockbusters, and every indication the latest
instalment of this burgeoning rivalry will be one of the best yet.
While their two home and away clashes this year were nail-biters, their most recent encounter in the Second Semi Final a fortnight ago was less of a contest, with Mordi streaking to an impressive 10-goal
victory which earning them a week off before Sunday’s decider.
The Dingoes’ loss forced them to play in their first Preliminary Final victory since 2014 – they were
subsequently beaten in the Grand Final by East Brighton the following week – but coach Shane Morwood
doesn’t necessarily
see this as a disadvantage given
the circumstances.
“I think it’s always been a challenge for the team that finishes on top to have a week off and win, then have another week off and play in a Grand Final,” Morwood said.
“In effect, you are playing your third game in five weeks, or second game in four weeks, however you want to look at it. That’s where your training needs to be spot on, your intensity in between those breaks.
“Players need consistency from a conditioning point of view, hopefully with us playing three weeks in a row it might provide us with a different edge that we haven’t experienced since 2014.”
This extra week would certainly have been helpful for several players, including Lucas Walmsley, Kristen Feehan and Luke Bartholomew, who have all missed weeks through injury and unavailability in the back half of the season and could benefit from some additional match conditioning.
Furthermore, last Sunday’s Preliminary Final allowed the players to atone from the previous week’s disappointment, and they responded with a comprehensive drubbing of last year’s Grand Finalist Bentleigh, which ensures the boys enter the big dance with confidence restored.
Conversely, Mordialloc coach Daniel Quinn viewed their week off as an opportunity for his players to recharge the batteries.
Back in 2015, Mordialloc finished fifth on the ladder and were forced to play three elimination finals in a row in order to reach the last Sunday in September. Quinn, who played for the Bloods during that finals series, concedes the side was “pretty worn-out and weary by the time they played that Grand Final”, but insists the side is much better placed this time around.
“We’ve been able to freshen a couple of blokes up, which is good. This time of the year, just about every bloke’s got a niggle, so it’s a really good chance to take a load off them and freshen them up,” Quinn said.
On paper, both teams are pretty evenly matched. Both have a vast array of quality ball winners through the midfield, a potent forward line, multiple avenues to goal and a rock-solid defence.
But it is in the engine room where the 2017 premiership will be decided.
Dingley’s on-ball brigade has shown an ability over the last few years to tear sides apart with its outside, line-breaking run and ball use. Stars such as Walmsley, Jackson Peet, Rob Rusan and Josh Ferguson, among others, are particularly damaging, and only need a sniff to wreak havoc.
And if Dingley can get first hands on the pill at the
contest and feed it out to their outside runners, it could be a long day for Mordialloc.
“You win the stoppages, you control the game,” Morwood said.
“We’ve got some good leg speed around the ground, and certainly with our onballers... If we can win the ball and get it out to our running-type players and break the lines then we are going to be hard to stop.
“If we don’t, then we are going to have to do some pretty heavy work around the stoppages to negate their effectiveness.”
Mordi, however, were simply awesome around the stoppages in the Second Semi, monopolising the clearances after quarter time. If their hard-bodied mids such as skipper Todd Bastion, ex-Magpie Danny Nicholls and Jordan Derbyshire can again crack in and win the contested ball, a repeat of the result from a fortnight ago may be on the cards.
But while their ability to win the hard ball has received much praise this season, the real strength of this Mordialloc side lies in its all-round versatility, ensuring there are plenty of soldiers that can roll through the midfield at various stages.
“We’re lucky we’ve got a very versatile side, we can throw a few different blokes there (midfield) as well,” Quinn said.
“We back our contested footy, there’s no doubt about that, but we try and back all of our 22, whichever position or role they are playing.”
In addition, the Bloods’ even spread of talent lessens the team’s reliance on a select group of superstar match winners, which is a big part of Quinn’s philosophy. It’s this even contribution from every single player that gives Mordi it’s best chance of victory.
The opposing ruckmen will also play a massive part in deciding which team gets first use of the footy. For Mordialloc, Tom McMahon has been terrific all season, and is one of the main reasons behind their Bloods’ stoppage
dominance. McMahon has the motor to ruck long periods, with versatile tall
Justin Summons also able to lend a hand.
Troy MacKenzie has been a tremendous
pick up for the Dingoes this
season, and worked well
in tandem with Chris Morgan.
MacKenzie has
unfortunately missed the
last month with a knee injury, and
will be given until Friday night to prove
his fitness for Sunday, but Morgan has stepped up
ably in his absence. Big Danny
Ades has also competed well when thrown into the ruck.
There is also plenty of firepower up forward for both sides, with several players on either team capable of booting bags of goals on their day.
Mordialloc have frequently selected a multi-pronged attack featuring strong marking options James Morris, Steve Tolongs and Matt Ravenall. The trio have combined for 130 goals this season and have regularly stretched opposition defences. Each of the three presents very well at the footy and they will provide a stern test for the Dingley defenders in Andrew Frost, Jack Clausen and ‘Pup’ Feehan.
Up the other end of the ground is the league’s leading goalkicker, Calhan McQueen. The vivacious forward is a super lead out target with a great set of hands and can boost his team with his boundless energy and enthusiasm. Working in tandem with McQueen is the silky Daniel Farmer, who can always be relied upon to kick a classy team-lifting goal when his side needs it most.
The two teams also get plenty of goals out of its respective midfield group, and, as such, both Quinn and Morwood demand accountability and two-way running from all of their charges to reduce to stress on their defensive structure.
Experience also counts for plenty in Grand Finals, and while the clubs have played in three each since 2013, the sides that line up on Sunday will be vastly different to those that competed in the 2015 decider. In fact, Morwood estimates that only five players will take the field for a fourth straight Grand Final in Dingley colours.
In any case, given the striking similarities between these two powerhouse clubs, the result of Sunday’s Grand Final is almost impossible to predict, which makes for a fitting conclusion to what has been a remarkably competitive season.
There is no doubt Mordialloc’s best is good enough to topple the Dingoes, but does it have the capacity to do it on the SFNL’s biggest stage? There is no doubt they are better placed to than any side has been in the last couple of years, however, it’s you cannot overlook Dingley’s recent record in Grand Finals.
Ultimately, whichever team settles their nerves first and gets on top in the midfield early will likely go on to be crowned premiers. While that could realistically go either way, the Dingles have proven themselves multiple time on Grand Final.
This looms as one of the best Grand Finals we have seen in many years as these two proud clubs write the next chapter in their storied histories. Dingley will likely go on to claim a rare premiership treble, but expect Mordialloc to stay with them every step of the way.
Dingley by 10 points.

It’s done, the Grand Final competitors have been decided and it took a thrilling contest in the Preliminary Final to decide who Chelsea Heights will face in the Southern Football Netball League Division 2 decider.
Murrumbeena 5.19 (49) def Keysborough 3.11 (29) Unbelievable.
Murrumbeena has booked a spot in the Division 2 grand final for the second time in three years after upsetting Keysborough in the Preliminary Final.
It was far from pretty, but it was enough and Murrumbeena supporters everywhere celebrated a stunning victory from a side that has now won nine matches in a row.
In a match with reeked with inaccuracy, with both sides kicking more behinds than actual goals scored, the Beena was able to battle on and put together a final quarter push to come from a nine-point three quarter time deficit.
And when the game was on the line it was the club’s most experienced players who stood up, with none other than former Division 1 premiership player Liam Wilson leading the way, his influence across the midfield earning him best afield honours.
Wilson was joined by gun midfielder Jake Semmel in his best game this finals series, while inspirational captain Mitch
Walder lifted his side over the line.
Lachlan Batt was the game’s leading goal kicker with two majors for the victors.
The game was a hard-fought slog fest and it began right from the opening siren, with neither side unable to register a goal in the first term, resigned to just three behinds apiece.
Murrumbeena found a breakthrough during the second term in windy conditions, but could only muster one goal from nine scoring shots, failing to capitalise and only establishing a 13-point lead by half time.
Keysborough lifted during the third term, restricting Murrumbeena to just two behinds, while putting three majors on the board.
Inaccuracy plagued it as well however, as the Burra finished with three goals from nine shots to lead by nine at the final change.
Murrumbeena would come home with a flurry however, kicking four unanswered goals from 10 shots to steal back momentum and run away with the contest, going on to eventually win by 20 points.
Riet Pal finished his season strongly, named Keysborough’s best alongside Jack Cole and Tim Werner.

So it all comes down to this, the last game of the season. Chelsea Heights and Murrumbeena will go to battle at Doveton for premiership glory and a spot in Division 1 in 2018.
Chelsea Heights v Murrumbeena (Power Reserve)
Saturday 23 September – 2:40pm
Previous meetings Round 1 – Chelsea Heights 11.8 (74) def Murrumbeena 7.7 (49) at Beazley Reserve
Round 12 – Murrumbeena 8.13 (61) def Chelsea Heights 8.11 (59) at Murrumbeena Park
So it all comes down to this, after 24 weeks of football it comes down to one game.
All the hard work put together across the preseason and through all the highs and lows that come with playing the sport we all love.
It all comes down to two hours of football between two teams that
deserve to be standing there on that one day in September.
Fittingly, the match will be played by the
best team in the competition and the first team to knock them off during their minor premiership run.
Chelsea Heights, after
finishing with 15 wins from
18 games, will go into the
match as short priced favourites,
and rightly so after being the team to beat all season.
While comfortable victories have been a staple of the Heighters’ season, it hasn’t all been easy for Brad Canavan’s men with the club experiencing several difficulties across the year, most noticeably the revelation of Cal Dodson and his battle with cancer.
Dodson’s battle has done nothing but inspire the playing group and has helped shape their season into what it has become.
Led by gun midfielder Nathan Herrington, who has been the standout player for the year, Chelsea Heights boasts a deep and talented midfield core.
Herrington, along with the likes of Joel Williams, Michael Shaw and Jarryd Uren have stood tall throughout the season and will play important roles in Saturday’s clash.
The man to watch will no doubt be big man Phil Smith, especially after last year’s heartbreak in the Preliminary Final.
Smith has dominated inside 50 this season to the tune of 64 goals from 16 games and is comfortably the best forward in the competition, establishing dangerous partnerships with the likes of James Robertson, Lachlan Dobson and Phil Matheson.
For Murrumbeena, it’s hard not to look back on the last time it was in a Grand Final, but it wasn’t a happy occasion for the Beena, going down to Oakleigh Districts in 2015.
But two years is a long time in football, and the Murrumbeena team that played then is vastly different from the one that will run onto Power Reserve on Saturday.
Leading the way is gun midfield duo Jake Semmel and Liam Wilson, who have both had outstanding seasons and can win the ball seemingly at will.
Not to be overlooked are the combination of Chris Evans, Darcy Hargrave and Jarrod Walker, who have also been standouts across the year.
Not known for being a high scoring
team, the Beena
does have a more than
capable target
inside 50 in Alaster Bradley,
who has had an impressive finals series to date.
Despite being held goalless in the preliminary
final, Bradley has produced 34 goals on the year
and, combined with Rhys Clayton and Eduardo
Espinosa, forms a formidable forward line trio.
Last, but certainly not least, is captain Mitch
Walder, a versatile leader who plays with his
heart for coach Stevie Wright.
But enough about the stars of the game, it’s
time to predict a result.
While logic certainly dictates a likely victory for
Chelsea Heights, it has been the better team all
season, the way Murrumbeena has played not
only in the lead up to the finals, but for three
straight weeks, cannot be ignored.
As most games do,
it will come down to
possession through the
midfield and which side
can make the most of
their opportunities.
Before I pick a
winner and a
margin, I would
like to congratulate
both sides on
their outstanding
years and wish
them all the best in
Saturday’s clash.
Chelsea Heights by
12 points.

FINALS WEEK 3 REVIEW
Preliminary Final 1
St Kilda City 15.11-101 defeated Cheltenham 8.10-58 A grand final appearance wasn’t meant to be for a dogged Cheltenham, who went down by 43 points at the hands of a dominant St Kilda City.
The Rosellas held the lead at the first break by three points, and only four points separated the teams as City led at the main break (30-26).
The third term saw City beginning to break away from their opponents, booting 6.0 to Cheltenham’s 3.2 and leading by 20 points (66-46) at three quarter time. With Ubil Chol and Jordan Coughlan-Stevenson starring for City, a comeback would prove challenging for the Rosellas.
Despite best efforts from Totti Kilner and Nathan Karpathakis, Cheltenham unfortunately could not pick up the pieces to top off a successful year in an
uphill battle created by City, who preceded to kick five goals to one in the final term.
Three goals each from Jack O’Shea and Ayang Nyanjok, and two from Darren McGorm, Matthew McNaughton, Jackson Vargas and Ubil Chol reflected a team effort from City, earning their side a chance to defend their 2016 premiership this week.
Preliminary Final 2
Oakleigh District 10.12-72 defeated Hallam 9.3-57 Fifth-finishers Oakleigh District earned their ticket to the Grand Final this week, cutting Hallam’s finals series short by 20 points.
The Hawks were the early aggressors, shooting out of the blocks to build a seven-point lead by half time in an entertain contest, before Oakleigh mounted a spirited comeback with three goals to two in the third term.
Only one point divided the teams going into the final term, with Oakleigh District holding a marginal
advantage (46-45). Led by the impressive Nathan Peddle and Anthony Casset, a determined Oakleigh returned after three quarter time and asserting their hunger for a premiership, kicking 4.2 to 2.0 in the final term and effectively taking the win.
Lachlan Signal and Alex Mackenzie were standouts for Hallam who despite the final result, can be congratulated on a successful year.
Liam McCabe was again a highlight in the forward line for the winners with four goals, alongside Nathan Peddle who kicked three.
Shane Woolley was instrumental for Hallam also with three goals to his name.
GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
St Kilda City vs Oakleigh District St Kilda City and Oakleigh District have proved supreme in the Under 19s competition, earning a ticket to the ultimate dance in the Grand Final on Sunday, 12pm at Springvale Reserve.
Finishing fifth this year, Oakleigh faced a tough run in the finals series. Unwavered by their underdog position, they convincingly knocked out Skye, Dingley and Hallam.
They are matched with the forceful minor premiers St Kilda City, who boast a 16-2 winning record this season and the 2015 and 2016 premierships.
The pair have only crossed paths once this season, with St Kilda winning by 32 points. A hungry Oakleigh with nothing to lose against last year’s premiers will be determined to change that record.
However, and as many finals tales tell, history means nothing in a Grand Final as both sides take to the field as equals in an eagerly awaited contest of the League’s youngest talent.
Congratulations to both sides on a stellar season, and best of luck in your pursuit to be crowned the Southern Football Netball League’s Under 19 Premiers for 2017.

Endeavour Hills 13.6 (84) def by Doveton Eagles 13.10 (88) When Byron Hoe nailed a set shot from close range, Endeavour Hills was dominating a stunned Doveton team.
That was five minutes into the final quarter and Doveton had gone from a handy half time lead to a deficit of 26 points.
Since the long break the Falcons had registered nine goals straight to a solitary major.
Doveton skipper Corrie Wilson and coach Simon Caldwell contemplated a lost opportunity.
“I thought we were gone. I started blaming everyone else,” Wilson admitted to the SFNL radio team.
“We were in shock. We were like 22 points up at half time, thinking we’ve got this one and all of a sudden bang bang bang and we thought we were gone, or I did.”
So did Caldwell watching from the sidelines.
Even when speaking on The 5th Quarter program the day after a stunning Eagles’ comeback, Caldwell reflected that he couldn’t believe the result.
“I was dumbfounded. I didn’t believe it happened from where we were. To get that result was just amazing.”
He credited his players with the barnstorming finish in which they booted 5.1 to a behind after Endeavour Hills managed the first couple of goals of the last term.
“I was pretty much spectating in that last 10, 15 minutes, just watching the guys do their thing,” Caldwell said.
Russell Robertson was well contained by Ben Moriarty throughout the game, but won a holding the ball free kick approaching time on. His shot sailed through for a goal, putting the Eagles up by five points.
Troy Hancock had sparked the comeback with a goal on the run.
Shortly after, Hancock’s handball set up Cory Wilson who kicked truly and brought the deficit back to 14 points.
An outstanding game from Doveton’s Adam Read had him in the running for the Meneilly Medal for best afield. His third goal 13 minutes into the final term reduced Endeavour Hills’ lead to eight points.
Mitch Clarke nailed a shot on the run six minutes later to put the Eagles just a point behind and that set the stage for Robertson.
Once Robbo delivered Doveton the lead, the Eagles swung into defensive mode.
It was an epic struggle in the dying minutes with Endeavour Hills getting the ball forward and pushing hard to restore the lead.
A Daniel Strom mark 25 minutes in set up a thrilling finish, but when his shot spilled off hands for a behind there were only moments left on the clock.
The four-point win sent Doveton’s players, staff and fans into wild celebrations.
The Eagles’ Michael Callinan capped a superb finals series, winning the Meneilly Medal.
It was thoroughly deserved, although it could just as easily have gone to Read.
Cam Carmody was instrumental in the Eagles’ comeback as he got on top of Nathan Crutchley in the final term ruck battle.
Crutchley had a tremendous finals series and gave his side every chance in the Grand Final with his ruck work in the first three terms.
Eagles’ skipper Wilson started the game brilliantly and finished in style, being a major contributor in the last quarter.
Falcons’ captain Nathan Strom starred up forward and in the midfield and his young teammate Nick Gay ran himself ragged in an outstanding performance.
Hoe, Daniel Batson, and Moriarty were prominent for the defeated side.
Endeavour Hills’ coach Rob Dipper praised the efforts of Jason Davies, commending the tackling pressure he applied in the forward line.
Despite the disappointing result, Dipper can be proud of a tremendous year.
After stepping into the post this season, he guided the club into its first finals campaign at senior level.
Whilst acknowledging the progress made in 2017, Dipper was a shattered man a couple of days after the loss. He was still questioning whether or not he could have done anything differently.
However, Dipper considered the Eagles’ experience perhaps played a part in the game’s dramatic momentum shift.
“Maybe just some wise heads from Doveton, some guys that have played finals footy before maybe got them over the line,” he reflected.
He spoke of the approach the Eagles took to get back into the match.
“They had nothing to lose. They really took the game on and they seemed just to go long and direct.”
Expect Endeavour Hills to again be contenders in 2018 with Dipper hopeful of retaining most players and expecting to add more talented youngsters. But in the short term, that prospect is of little consolation.
For Dipper’s counterpart Caldwell, it was the perfect finish to his time in charge at Doveton.
Although he will stick around the club to help in other capacities, Caldwell made the decision some time ago to step away from coaching after this season due to other commitments.
It appears likely Robertson will take on the challenge of steering the Eagles next season when they embrace the challenge of Division 2 competition.
But first there will be plenty of celebrating.
Congratulations Doveton on a tremendous achievement in winning four straight finals and on a memorable Grand Final comeback.
As for Division 3, a high-quality finals series has this scribe already anticipating the action next season.

Murrumbeena 7.17 (59) defeated Oakleigh District 4.3 (27) The amazing first season of the SFNL Women’s came to an end with Murrumbeena completing the perfect undefeated season with the 32-point defeat of Oakleigh District in the Grand Final at Jack Barker Oval.
Murrumbeena had been the class of the competition but they were made to work for it on the final day of the season.
Beena had the best of the early play with 2.3 but allowed the Oaks to get on the board with 1.0 to see the margin sit at nine points at quarter time.
Oakleigh District took the momentum in the second quarter, allowing three behinds, while kicking 1.2 of their own to trail by four points at half time.
The momentum would again change hands after half time with Murrumbeena’s 2.3 to Oakleigh
District’s 1.1, giving Beena a 12-point lead at the final change, but leaving the game in the balance.
The Oaks would again only manage one goal in the last quarter, with Murrumbeena dominating and only inaccuracy keeping the final margin down.
Murrumbeena captain Grace Bibby was named best on the ground for the Grand Final, ably assisted by Jasmyn Brandon, Alice Kovess, Emma Morison, Rebecca Niclasen and Lauren Wolf.
Bibby and Aisling Muir led the Murrumbeena forward line with two goals each as singles were added by Kovess, Brandon and Danielle Wearne.
SFNL Team of the Year ruck Jess Szalek was Oakleigh District’s best, with Alana Brown, Emily McIntyre, Rebecca Adams, Rachel McNamara and Lexy Amzavas battling hard in defeat.
McIntyre remained Oakleigh District’s best avenue to goal, accounting for all four of their goals.
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: GRAND FINAL REVIEW / JARRYD McGUANE
I would like to take the time to thank all the clubs and players for the access and time they have given when covering the season. It has a pleasure to cover you all, even from Tasmania for the last few weeks of the season. It is evident to me that the league will continue to have success with the high quality of players and the focus on development from all clubs. I look
forward to seeing it grow in the years to come – Jarryd McGuane

Over 300 SFLUA umpires (68 goalies, 118 boundaries and 112 fieldies) took the field in season 2017 to officiate in SFNL matches this year. 68 fieldies umpired senior matches, with 41 doing Division 1 (22 for the first time), and there were 236 three umpire games.
There are many reasons why our umpires are in action rain, hail or shine each weekend. Association President Al Manning might say it is for the beer after the game, Scotty Learmonth and Jake Rositani might say it is for the money, Hannah Bailes might say it is for the social interactions on and off the field, Matt Crowley because he loves to run, Tane Abbott for the power trip, Joel Lewis because he has nothing better to do, Dan Bomford because it allows him to make up for the mistakes he makes when umpiring cricket, and Leigh Dawkins because it gets him away from the kids. While some of these statements may be correct, all of our umpires do it because they love the game and want to be part of it.
In 2017, we have again delivered for the SFNL and its member clubs effectively and efficiently from Port Melbourne to Carrum, Hallam and Endeavour Hills, filling appointments in Seniors, Reserves, Under 19s, SFNL Women’s and South East Women’s competitions.
In the finals so far, our fieldies have averaged 31 free kicks per game, with an average of 4.5 missed free kicks per match, 2.5 unwarranted free kicks paid and an average of three 50m penalties per match. Whistles have been blown over 3300 times, and the goalies have marked down over 8200 scores, while the ball has been thrown in nearly 2300 times.
This year we sent Joel Davis, Matt Mahoney, Taylor Manning and Cam Watts to trial with the VFL and all four have done well there, with three of them umpiring finals. Sam Bridges, Joel Davis and Annie Mirabile are now on the VFL senior list, and Luke Porter is on the senior development list. Hannah
Bailes, Jack Cunnington and Darcy Trewarn have participated in the VFL Mates program this year, while Darcy and Connor Vaux officiated in the VFL Under 16s Championships back in April. Hannah Bailes, Molly Bowman and Alanah French have been involved in the AFL Vic Female Umpiring Academy this year, with Shannon Kirkby assisting in the coaching there.
The SMJFL umpires’ coaching panel was headed up by Cam Watts with Nick Bergman, Glenn Emery, Nathan Guy and Matt Mahoney also involved. The SMJFL is a great breeding ground for umpires and there were many SFNL umpires involved in the SMJFL finals. Al Manning has coordinated the Super Rules Umpire Appointments with many SFNL umpires in action there every Sunday.
This year, 36 of our umpires officiate in their first Grand Final and I wish them and all our Grand Final umpires all the best for their matches. You will represent all of your colleagues with distinction as you umpire to the best of your ability, implementing our values: honesty, consistency, teamwork, doing our best, presence and composure as they get it right and don’t influence the result.
I congratulate all of our umpiring panel on an excellent season. We have the best seat in the house AND we get paid for it! We cope with all the physical and mental challenges, the wet and muddy winter Saturdays, the supporters who always know better than us, the sometimes less-than-average change rooms and the long nights on the training tracks but are on the field smiling each week.
I thank David Cannizzo and the SFNL Board, David, Matt and Will in the office and all the member clubs. I thank Alan Manning and his SFLUA executive for their support and wonderful working relationship in getting the umpires on the ground. Lastly I thank my group of committed and loyal group of coaches and match day observers.
I look forward to seeing all our 2017 umpires back in action on the training track next February as we make season 2018 even more successful than 2017.
Yours in football,
Pete Marshall SFNL Director of Umpiring.
SEASON 2017 FROM AN UMPIRING PERSPECTIVE / PETER MARSHALL
Best of luck to umpires officiating in Grand Finals today. For those umpires who didn’t get to the “big dance” this year, your turn may come next year. There have been many highlights this season, with record numbers on the track enabling us to run many three field and/or boundary umpire games each week, and many former SFLUA members doing us proud at VFL and AFL levels. Last week Annie Mirabile umpired a TAC Cup Prelim Final, John Cooper a VFL Prelim Final, and Tayla Manning a VFL Women’s Prelim, while four of our current list – Matt Crowley, Nathan Guy, Sam Rogers and Courtney Stelling - will trial with the VFL in the lead up to season 2018.
Your SFLUA Committee has continued to support the Association, with Alan Manning and Rodd Johnson providing strong leadership on and off the field. John Borg has looked after the accounts while Kevin Mitchell has again managed the uniform shop and Thomas Grundy has rounded out the numbers on the Committee.
Thanks to Nigel and Carmel Thompson who have once again ably managed our canteen/bar after training each Thursday. Nigel and Carmel first became involved in the Association back in 2007 when son Jack joined our umpiring ranks. They noticed that our canteen was staffed by a roster of goal umpires and volunteered to take over the operation of the canteen/bar so that our umpires could attend training and lectures without distraction. Every Thursday evening since then from April to September, Nigel and Carmel have been behind the bar serving drinks and food including Nigel’s legendary dim sims, and their contribution has been recognised this year with the awarding of SFLUA Life Membership to both of them.
The White Knight thanks the Umpiring Department: Pete Marshall and his assistants John Auditore, Pete Bailey, Brett Chard, Craig Davenport, Robin Epstein Rodd Johnson, Jeff Mark, Brett McGeorge, Clayton Pressley, Andrew Scott, David Smith and Harry Stamos. We also thank our dedicated trainer, Natalie for looking after us so well this year. Thanks must also go to the SFNL Administration. The SFNL CEO, David Cannizzo is a great supporter of the Association, Adam Sparrow, as the recently departed Football Operations Manager looked after umpiring affairs diligently, Matt Grimwood has handled all the paperwork and Schedula with ease while Will Hunter has promoted umpiring as often as possible through the SFNL Record.
At the Appointments Night on Wednesday, a number of umpires received awards:
The Graeme Bertram Award for excellence in umpiring and a strong off-field commitment to the Association went to Rodd Johnson, who has been a very diligent Association Secretary for five years and has put his hand up for every possible off-field task, while trying his hand at both field and boundary umpiring.
The Luttrell/Martin trophy for Best Clubman trophy went to Kevin Mitchell, who has again spent many hours each week running our uniform store and assisting with social functions while the Coaches Award for the Most Dedicated Umpire went to Joel Lewis who has barely missed a training session.
Other awards were:
Golden Whistle award – Matt Crowley
Best 1st Year Field Umpire – Chris Menera
Best 1st Year Boundary Umpire – Oisin Gribben
Best 1st Year Goal Umpire – Marcus White
Most Improved Field Umpire – Nick Bergman
Most Improved Boundary Umpire – Courtney Stelling
Most Improved Goal Umpire – Tony Levett
Thanks to all umpires who have assisted with doubling up throughout the season, and to those umpires who help out on Saturdays despite being unable to train due to work or family commitments. Thanks also to our club umpires who also play an important role.
There will be an end of season celebration after the Div 1 Grand Final from 6pm back at Bricker Reserve. All Association members are welcome to attend.
Our umpire escorts are the unsung heroes of suburban football and provide us with all the protection we need. Scott Learmonth found himself in need of protection at a non-SFNL related event last week but couldn’t find any and was unable to fulfil his appointment!
Steve Gelsi was unable to fill his finals appointment last week when his car broke down on the way to the game. Luckily, Andrew Scott was on hand to run the boundary in his place and, as you would expect from someone who has umpired Div 1 Grannies on both the field and the boundary, Scottie put in a very impressive performance on the big ground at Springvale.
At the SMJFL vote count last week, the highest individual tally in any competition was 26 registered by our own Darcy Trewarn playing for Murrumbeena Under 17s. Darcy has a tough decision to make next year between playing and umpiring – he excels in both disciplines!
The Annual General Meeting will be held at 7pm on October 4 at the Moorabbin/Cheltenham RSL. All members are welcome to attend and we welcome new blood on the committee each year. The agenda and proxy forms are available at www.sflumpires.com. If you can’t attend, please obtain a proxy form from a committee member at the football today, complete it and return it.
Are you interested in becoming an umpire? Come and join us in 2018. If you love footy, you’ll love being an umpire!
The White Knight wishes all umpires a restful off season and hopes to see you all on the training track next February.
Remember that: “The Ump in Green Should Not Be Seen” and “We Bounce, We Blow, The Rules We Know”

It’s that time of the year and I for one cannot believe where the season has gone!
The radio team has had a stellar year and we hope that you have enjoyed the coverage of the matches and the Sunday shows, Nothing but Net and
the awarding-winning The 5th Quarter.
I need to thank my team of great people and they are in no particular order -
David Hampton, what a wonderful year you have had calling and, like a good bottle of Yellow Tail, you get better and better with age.
Johnny Takemura, without your famous scoring system we would be stuffed! Another great year by you and your football collecting kids.
Ian Dougherty, by calling more footy you have grown in the role and of course your special comments are on the mark. You did a great job as host of Nothing but Net and handing this role over to Mel Aitken as part of our succession plan. I think this has also been your finest year hosting The 5th Quarter.
Kevin Cummins, well done on the job you did trying to destroy our new equipment and the job you do, particularly telling our listeners the end to which the wind is blowing.
We had a new addition to our team this year and that is Daniel Ewart, otherwise known as “Dan the stats man”. It has been great having you on board!
Melodie Aitken, words cannot express how proud I am of the fantastic work you have done this year as host of Nothing but Net and being a great support to me. You are a star.
Hugh Maclean, the humour you bring to Nothing but Net is fantastic and the knowledge you have of all things netball is incredible.
John Bennett, pity we did not get to have your wedding live on air as this would have been a great moment in community radio. Great work this year by you.
Wayne Fuller, what a pleasure it is to work with you and thanks for all the “little birdies” you bring to the table. And of course you are the king of “What’s Going On?”.
Karl Bianco, you have over the past three years become a valued member of the team and you are the reason we sound so good. It’s really good working with you.
Will Hunter, thanks for being a great supporter and help with I do and for helping out in the van and studio when we have needed it.
To all the regular guests we have had on Nothing but Net, you know who you are, thanks for your efforts. And to all the guests we have had on The 5th Quarter, thanks for giving up your time – it’s really appreciated.
Thanks to all the clubs, presidents, coaches, players and umpires for putting on the games so we can do what we love doing.
Thanks to our sponsors, Casella Family Brands and Laser Clinics Australia Southland and Malvern, for providing prizes for us to give away.
We have had a great year from calling everything from the Seymour Law Grand Final, the inaugural SFNL Women’s match and Grand Final, to the Netball Division 1 and 2 deciders. We have moved that caravan around a fair bit, and massive thanks to Thomas Grundy and John Burke for their assistance.
And finally, to all of our loyal fans, thanks so much for listening!
Until next year,
Robert Sharpe (Sharpie) Executive Producer SFNL Radio

DINGLEYFooty cliches abound at this time of the year, and that old favourite “a week is a long time in football was heard around the traps last week” as we prepared for Bentleigh, who had travelled a hard road to make it as far as they did.
A twenty goal turn around in terms of margins from one week to the next doesn’t really make much sense, but it was an impressive performance from our mob last week. Danny, Jackson, Pup, Morgs and Hodgey were standouts in a very even performance.
So it is on to the big one against a rested Mordialloc. Anybody prepared to punt on the result would either have too much money or a ridiculous sense of humour, or both.
We know that only the very best from all our twenty two will get us over the line, so here’s hoping the bounce of the ball goes our way.
The reserves got up by less than a kick in a heartstopper to have another dip at Cheltenham. Having started the season with many questions being asked about our young side, they have all been answered thus far.
Now that we are in it: lets win it. Good luck to Matty and his team.
Irrespective of todays results, the club has been able to re-sign our entire senior coaching team for season 2018.
That is fantastic news as Shane and Brad will be taking on their jobs for a club record eighth season.
Organisational stability is everything, but it is not often not seen at footy clubs. These
coaching appointments provide that stability and the surety to our supporters, members, and sponsors that we are staying on track.
We hope that everybody who claims to be a Dingley supporter will be there in numbers next week and more importantly get on board for next year. “Get on board” is the message we want to send out as the season draws to close.
Upcoming events include the presentation night at the Dingley Hotel this coming Thursday night, September 28th.
Tickets available now at just seventy bucks.
“Get on board”
We hope to have another couple of flags and silverware to display on the night.
Go Dingoes.”
DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTES
OAKLEIGH DISTRICT What a great weekend for the club last week. Our girls footy started off competing in the grand final on Saturday. We tried our best being inn the contest all day but Murrumbeena were just a little too good in the end.
Nevertheless everyone agrees it was an outstanding first season and congratulations to coaches, helpers, managers, but most of all to the women who just went about it in a refreshing , and optimistic, happy attitude to it all year. We all look forward to next season. Good little party too!
The Under 19’s fronted up on Sunday for the
right to go through to the GF against Hallam. Last time Hallam just got over the line at the Highway, so most expected a hard fought game. The first half we were clearly below our recent form, reason for concern. After half time however we seemed to be back in the groove and seemed to be taking control. ¾ time and still nothing in it, but we hit our straps in the last minutes and the final score was the biggest margin of the day. Fantastic reward for effort from the lads. So! Grand Final coming up, and we can’t wait! Best of luck everyone.
It’s been a great year, don’t forget our netball flag! Remember everyone our presentation coming up next Thursday September 28 We all know the details don’t
we? Village Green 6.30 pm $50 for students $60 for adults , pay for drinks bar prices. See you all there.

CHELTENHAMTo President John Graham, his committee, our coaches headed by Senior coach Des Ryan, Reserves coaches Al Garlick and Keiran Nolan, Thirds leader Steve Brosnan and our Colts Coach Greg Barclay ahuge well done on season 2017.
While the finals have been being conducted at numerous sites around the SFNL we have hosted 2 weeks of Third Div Finals at Jack Barker and while the players have had a roster we have been most fortunate to have the best band of volunteers going around to provide the experience that was on offer.
Thanks to Bayside Council and the Bowden Group Builders for their efforts in the completion of the new changerooms and kitchen, a truly fantastic facility that we will be able to utilise in the season 2018.
BENTLEIGH RSL RESERVES:. After pre-season training began in November we are now at the point where we can make it all the more worthwhile. The side has
deserved its place in this week’s Grand Final through its form throughout the season and winning its 2 finals to date. The efforts of Licka and Kizza need to be recognised as they are at the hands of the Senior selection each week and to achieve what they have to date is terrific. To all aour players and supporters lets hope that they can bring home the bacon on Sunday.
TASMAN MEATS COLTS: Only 4 points down at half time and looking as though they were right in the fight, but the second half did not turn out the way we vwished. Congratulations to Curl and all the Colts players for a fantastic effort during the year and you have done the club proud .Best palyers were Kilner x 2, Davis, Freeman, Karpathakis and Zuccala.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES
MURRUMBEENAWomens Footy Our women played in the Grand Final at Cheltenham against Oakleigh Districts with a single focus on one thing - to stick to our game plan and play our roles. Beena got off to a good start, had all the play and managed a 9 point buffer at quarter time.
In a very even second quarter with Oakleigh attacking more than Beena, the back line was superb, holding them out going into half time with a 4 point lead. The second half saw a committment the side has shown all year and came out winning the third and fourth quarter to run away with a thoroughly well deserved victory bringing home the chocolates to be crowned Premiers and Champions. Thank you to all the
helpers who helped the women’s side achieve their ultimate goal. A sensational first season for our lady’s this year, well done to Emrys and his crew Michelle, Bryn, Ron Luff, Rob Guerra, Val Stevenson and Lynda Lloyd-Griffiths.
Goal kickers; Ash and Gracie 2 Jasmyn, Alice & Dani 1
Best; Grace Bibby, Jasmyn Brandon, Alice Kovess, Emma Morison, Rebecca Niclasen & Lauren Wolf.
Seniors We took on Keysie in the prelim in testing conditions. Only one goal was kicked in the first half of footy and thankfully it was from Beena. 13 points up at the long break Keysie came out firing in the third kicking 3 goals to zero. 9 points down at the last change we were determined to
put everything into the final quarter and that we did kicking the only 4 goals and progressing to the Grand Final with a well deserved 20 point win. Willo was sensational all day and clearly BOG. All the backs did an outstanding job led by Jordy sauce and Baz.
Good luck for our boys today against Chelsea Heights. Play with Pride, kick with passion and roar with no fear! Deck Turkington will play his 100th game for the Club – great day out Beenas.
Thank you to all our sponsors throughout our fantastic season;

CHELSEA HEIGHTSThese notes are brought to you by our Gold Sponsors – Thomas Thomas Plastering and Combined Waste Services –
Welcome to the “Grand Finale”, the “Big Show” or whatever you like to call it. I call it the “Devils Playground.” The game we all strive for. For coaches, players, support staff, committee and supporters, this is the ultimate and the excitement can be felt around the “Demons Lair, “here at Beazley Reserve. This match is at Power Road in Doveton and we take on Murrumbeena, a team that inflicted one of our rare defeats on us, during the home and away season. Grand Finals bring out the best in everyone and we need to play at our best and be on our toes to enable us to bring the silver-ware home.
Thanks - As this is our last game for Season 2017 we need to thank the many people who have helped us during the year. Firstly to all our long suffering

To the players and coaching staff, who have done the job, on-field, to have got us this far, we say well done and well played. To our loyal supporters, thanks for riding all the highs and lows with us. “The Devil’s Advocate.”
MORDIALLOCOnly one of our sides played this week, and they certainly gave us a great ride on a sunny Sunday morning. We played a highly-credentialed Dingley side that had won six more games over the season than we had, and we gave them one almighty fright before finally falling.
We started off kicking to the non-scoring end, and kept Dingley to two goals while kicking one of our own. Sadly we could only match our opponents with one goal each in the second quarter to go in to half time four points down in a low scoring arm wrestle. A couple of fifty metre penalties led to Dingley turning for home three goals to the good, but the boys responded to Gatty’s rallying call at three quarter time
and dominated the last term. We kicked a couple of goals but sadly the Dingley defence was a bit strong and we couldn’t kick the vital third. A final scoreline of 37-32 was testament to the tightness of the affair, and we finished with four individual goalkickers. Luke Ardrey’s leadership and Scott Pitura’s willingness for the battle stood out on the day, James Roberts probably had his best game for the club, Carey Neville was, well, Carey Neville, and Brad Lindsay and Michael Schofield were brilliant down back. This was the day, though, where there were no passengers and all that donned the red and white can be justifiably proud of themselves.
And so the seniors play the grand final on Sunday against an old foe for whom we have the utmost respect. We have had many amazing
battles with Dingley over the years, and there’s no doubt that this will be another beauty, so I urge all with the red and white faith to get out to Springvale on Sunday afternoon. We wish our players all the very best – we know that you will represent our great club with pride and distinction. Indeed we wish all players, coaches and officials on this last weekend of the season the very best of fortune for the day.
As committee and supporters of the Mordialloc football club, we thank all our coaches, players and assistants for the work they’ve put in this season. Hopefully on Sunday night we’ll be basking in glory, but we know that if both sides bring their best football, then the spectacle will truly be worthy of this grand occasion. Go well, and go Mordi!!!

SFNL FUN ZONEDIVISION 3: CLUB NOTES
SOUTH YARRA
Bendigo Bank Wrap Up The Yarras came into their preliminary final full of confidence on the back of their impressive semi-final win against Cheltenham. Skye Bombers had split the wins, one a piece in their regular season contests, but on the expansive Springvale Reserve, the Yarras had a slight advantage with the bookmakers leading into the match.
There were a few changes to the Yarra’s team from the previous week, most notably the return of the Evans brothers. All three brothers had a big influence on the game, especially James Evans down back, who made the Skye forwards look very slow. Paddy Johnson continued his impressive finals form, as did Brock, however he struggled with his goal kicking accuracy.
This was about the only thing keeping Syke in the contest and at three quarter time the Yarras were 7 goals up. A few free kicks + 50 metre penalties in the last quarter evened up the contest marginally, however the Yarras had all the running and cruised to a 20 point victory.
They’ll now take on Cerberus in the club’s only Grand Final appearance since 2009! The match will be played at 9:45am on Saturday 23rd September at Power Reserve, Doveton.
The Yarras are now seeking expressions of interest for the Reserves and Thirds coaching positions for the 2018 season. If you would like to apply for either position, please email your interest to [email protected].
Presentation night is on 23rd Sept. 2017, start booking your seats! Details are on the Facebook page.
