From the Principal Congratulations to the Drama and Dance students, and Miss Duggan in particular, for the amazing production this week. A lot of hard work has gone into the performance and I’d like to thank all staff who supported the production. The students were amazing and really did us proud. It’s been exciting to see students involved in some awesome My Ed and Collective Ed programs over the last few weeks, including Career Café, the Big Day Out and a Taster Day at Clarence TAFE. Students are really taking on board the opportunities provided to them to ensure they explore the world of work, become aware of the options available to them, and make solid plans for the future. I’m looking forward to hearing about next week’s Big Day Out which has an ARTs focus. Year 10’s have completed their pre enrolments for year 11 and I’m pleased to see many students taking up options here at Bayview College. We have some amazing new courses planned for next year and, combined with our supportive and known environment, make our college sector a great option for all students. Finally, farewell to Bridget van de Kamp, our amazing staff member from Collective Ed. Unfortunately Bridget has to move on to other opportunities but the great thing for us is that she will stay connected to our school. We will welcome a third member to our Collective Ed team very soon to continue on with the great work started by Bridget. Thanks to Bridget on behalf of our whole community for everything you have done to support our students to be successful at school and in life. BIG DAY OUT

Bayview students enjoyed a hospitality “Big Day Out’

on Tuesday August 7, visiting Tim and the crew at

Zimmah Coffee, Lisa and the team at the Grand

Chancellor, we called into Mures for lunch and then

had a ‘menu race’ around Salamanca.

All aboard the bus for the next Big Day Out on

Tuesday 21 August, when students will visit the Theatre Royal, Southern Cross Media, the Tas

Symphony Orchestra and Concert Hall for the ‘Arts’

Big Day Out.

GRADE 7 CSIRO EXCURSION

On Friday 3 August as part of the My Education

Careers Day the grade 7’s went on an excursion to

the CSIRO Expedition at the wharf.

We had a look at some exhibits which featured lots

of things including a touch tank of some sea animals,

a Virtual Reality expo and some information about

different species of sea life that researchers find on

their expeditions through the Antarctic. We were

also really privileged to be able to do a tour of the

CSIRO Research Vessel: Investigator. Our tour guide

showed us through lots of areas of the vessel

including.

Kitchen

Bedrooms

Lounge/recreational room

The “dirty wet room” which was where they

cleaned, gutted and inspected fish for testing

Captain’s room where the captain operates the

vessel

Deck and its equipment

Research lab

It was a very interesting day to be involved in. We

finished the day off visiting the Boat Park in Battery

Point, where we had lunch and played games. Thanks

to Ms Stevens for organising the excursion and the

other teachers who came. Well done to all students

for displaying excellent behaviour.

SENIOR DRAMA AND DANCE STUDENTS

Week 4 has been a dramatic week for all, particularly the Senior Drama & Dance students putting on their major

performance piece for the year, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Viper Lanning as Willy Wonka. Beginning the

Wonka journey in March students were cast as their characters early and have been working on stage performance

and characterisation ever since. The rehearsal process has brought the Senior Drama group closer than ever and after

our first performance to the feeder primary schools, it was heart-warming to see students congratulate each other

backstage.

It takes great collaboration and teamwork to create a school production and this year it would not have been possible

without the help of two staff members in particular. Bronwynne Blazely has worked tirelessly to create our fantasy set

with lots of support from her art students and Luke Wood. They never gave in even when the gob stopper machine

was squished and had to be re-built several times over. Wendy Meek has supported the Senior Drama students in

every way possible from directing scenes to creating props, both their enthusiasm and hard work is greatly received

and appreciated. Speaking of backstage Aden Bosworth is a super star lighting technician who has a promising career in

this field.

All Drama and Dance students have worked incredibly hard during the Wonka rehearsal and performance experience

and I am so proud of each and every one of them. We look forward to next year’s show being bigger and more

dramatic than ever!

NAPLAN ONLINE - TRIAL OF THE NEW ONLINE ASSESSMENT PLATFORM

You may have heard that NAPLAN Online is being introduced across Australia over three years from 2018.

Tasmanian schools will be administering NAPLAN online from 2019.

NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information.

Our school will trial the new assessment platform (the computer system the test will be taken on) and assess our

readiness to participate in NAPLAN Online from 2019. This trial is called the School Readiness Test (SRT).

The SRT is not a test of student achievement and results will not form part of a student’s overall assessment.

Participating in this trial is important as it will help us ensure we have adequate internet connectivity, and whether

students have access to sufficient number of devices for NAPLAN testing. During the trial, our school will have the

opportunity to practice managing the classroom logistics for an online assessment and the new test administration

processes.

Feedback from schools participating in the trial will inform transition to the online assessment as well as provide

valuable feedback to shape the final development of the NAPLAN Online platform.

The SRT has not been constructed to assess curriculum knowledge, but rather to provide students an opportunity to

experience the types of questions that will be included in the new online assessment.

During September 2018, selected students in Year 8 will participate in the trial of the assessment platform, by

undertaking one online test that include examples of the new NAPLAN Online questions. This test will take

approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Participation in this trial is a key step to ensuring a successful NAPLAN Online experience.

If you have further questions, please contact Ms Teena Dunstan at the school.
