Dear Parents, Staff and Students, I would like to share this week my experiences with the maths students I have been working with over the past week in year 3 / 4 and year 6. What was noticeable was the mind set these students displayed when they were challenged and to see them work through the problems was impressive. In maths, confidence and resilience are important traits and if we as a school can continue to see improvement in these areas the results will follow. If you were lucky enough to attend our last assembly you would have been impressed with the vast array of talent on show. There is no better way to start our Fridays than with our choir who sing our Australian anthem and school song so beautifully. Then we witnessed our regular student of the week awards, complimented with outstanding efforts and rewards in the Poetry competition. Congratulations to all our students who participated in the competition and we wish our winners all the very best as they represent our school at the next State level. Be sure to read in our Bulletin this week all the acknowledgements regarding the competition. Every Friday we also have class sharing and this week we saw how our prep children have been learning the days of the week in German and English, they were wonderful, ably supported by our Year 6 students who impressed with their musical skills. There is no better way to see what the great things that are happening in our school than witnessing our assembly. Thank you to all our staff who continue to support and drive our students to greater heights. In other news, as a result of a request from one of our parents Lisa Phelan, we have re- introduced the ideas box that will be stored in the office area. So if you have any ideas for the development of the school be sure to let us know. During the past week the DET official parent opinion survey has gone home to 41 randomly selected families. All Victorian schools participate in this survey. If you have received the survey please ensure you have returned it to the office by Monday 10am. We will analyse the feedback and implement school improvements based on this.

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-

Provide care and be a friend

Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)

Help a child sort through a problem or an issue

Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)

Connect with parents as the need arises

Refer a child to other professionals

Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the needs that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Swimming August 15– 25—Knox Leisure Centre

Swimming will begin on August 15 and will conclude on August 25. Medical information has been sent out to those children who will be participating in the program. Please make sure that you return all the relevant paperwork to school asap as we need to pass this information onto the swim centre. All swimming needs to be fully paid for by Monday August 8. Unfortunately non payment may result in your child not participating in the program. I have listed below times when students will be at the pool: 9.30am—10.15am Prep-P, PSB, half of 1-W (bus leaves at 9.05am) 10.15am—11.00am 1-S, 2-M, other half of 1-W 11.00am - 11.45am 2-W & 3/4W 11.45am—12.30pm 3/4R & 3/4H Parents are most welcome to come to the pool to watch their child/ren swim. Classroom Sharing—German Poetry Competition

German Poetry Competition 2016 Round 1 Results

On Wednesday 20th July all Year 4, 5 and 6 students took part in our annual German Poetry Competition. Each student was required to memorise a German poem and present it articulately with accurate pronunciation and appropriate tone, stress and pausing. They were also asked to show their understanding and interpretation of the poem through their delivery, without using props or exaggerated gestures. Students had the option of entering the DaF section (German as a foreign language) or the Open section. Anyone is eligible to enter the Open section but the poems are typically more difficult and all native speakers are required to enter this section. This year a majority of our students took up the challenge of entering this division, with great success. Even though individual presentations can be very challenging, I was really pleased with the effort students put in to learning and reciting their poems. Congratulations to all our Year 4, 5 and 6 students! All first-round place-getters and High Achievement Award recipients (shaded below) progress to the second round of judging.

BSPS Arts Extravaganza is Coming!

This year the Music and Art teachers would like to offer an evening event to BSPS community members. We are calling it our “Arts Extravaganza”.

The concept is that students who particularly enjoy the Visual or Performing Arts can have a fur-ther opportunity to showcase their work.

Visual Arts works will be on display for the whole evening and musical items will be performed in the hall (or, if we are overwhelmed with items, in the Music Room and the hall). Visitors may choose to come in and out of the performance areas in between items. The choir will perform at the end of the evening.

Students who wish to perform individual or small group items must be fully prepared and have auditioned with Herr Roe or Frau Blaich.

Students who wish to have a Visual Arts piece displayed need to speak with Mrs Murrihy.

Entry to the soiree is by gold coin donation (all proceeds will support our planned purchase of some new xylophones). We are looking forward to celebrating our students’ artistic talents. Hope to see you there!

From Our Sport/House Captains

Sports Captains Article On the 28th of July the students in Years 5 and 6 chose their Summer Interschool Sports. The four sports are Kanga 8 Cricket, Hot Shots Tennis, Softball, and Volleyball. We are all excited as our two days of competition get closer and all the teams are practising very hard. The Olympics are coming up in Rio in Brazil from August 5th – August 21st. We have got so many talented Australians going and competing in the Rio Olympics. Hopefully, we will have some of our school students going to the Olympics in the future. On Thursday, at Bayswater South there will be a free dress day and on the synthetic grass there will be activities related to the Olympics. We are all excited this upcoming event. Emily and Vijai—Sports leaders Interschool Summer Sports - Cricket Preparations Cricket practice has just started up and the excitement is still sinking in. Training has been great with our wonderful captains, Romesh (Captain) and Zane (Vice-Captain). From Our School Chaplain

Affirmations Hi Parents, what’s an affirmation? It’s a short statement that we say to ourselves throughout the day to help build our self-esteem, to encourage ourselves especially when the day is not going so well, which is both positive and supports our goals. Affirmations are spoken in the present tense and can be used to counter negative talk too. As we do this more and more this positive self-talk becomes a habit and we begin to do it automatically. This then becomes a subconscious habit and can have a huge positive impact on who we are, who we become and how we relate to other people. Affirmations need to be given considerable thought about what you want to say to yourself that will bring about the changes you’d like to see in your life. Once you’ve practised this and have it down pat, teaching this skill to your children could see the significant change you and they may wish to see in their lives too. Just remember, it won’t happen overnight and will take persistence and patience. But it’s so worth it! Designing the affirmation to suit the individual is extremely important. What you say will help motivate and drive you and your children forward in a positive way. This will vary for each of you and will need considerable thought. Consider things like:- What are your passions? What do you like to do? What goals do you want to reach both soon and into the future? What do you want to see change by changing what you say to yourself? One important point is that affirmations need to be said over and over or whenever they come to mind until they become something you do automatically. The more you repeat them the more easily they will be absorbed by your subconscious mind. They have more of an impact if spoken out loud so you may wish to make some generic statements that you can say together as a family whenever the opportunity arises. Maybe when you’re in the car or at breakfast time to start off the day positively. You can put them around the house on post it notes too as a reminder to say them often. Emotions play a large part in affirmations and are more effective if they actually make you feel a certain way. So choose words that have an uplifting effect on you. Remember that negative words or thoughts repeated over and over will have exactly the same impact on your subconscious but will not help, but hinder you. If you or your children suffer from negative self-talk or self-belief helping yourselves in this way has the potential to turn your lives around by overriding previously negative infor-mation you’ve fed into your subconscious. Some suggestions you could say may be:-

I believe in myself

I am capable of great things

I am special, there is no-one else like me

Mistakes are okay, they help me to learn

I’m choosing to have a great day today, no matter what I face

The truth is important to me

I am proud to be different

If I think I can, I can

I have great ideas When you start, the statements you say may not even be believed to be true or possible for you. But as you say them over and over, just watch what happens. One day you will realise you actually believe them now and can see the huge potential within you just bubbling under the surface and waiting to be released for great things! School Council President’s News

A few months ago I reported that I had attended a primary school council president’s meeting. At that meeting, presidents of various primary schools in outer east Melbourne were informed on what it is like to be the school council’s president and it gave presidents the opportunity to exchange stories and ideas. At the meeting I had expressed my interest to attend another school’s council meeting in order to find out what issues are at other schools and how they deal with it, and to see how a fellow school council president performs his/her duties. And recently I attended a council meeting of a primary school in our region and here are some of my observations. What was most pleasing to find out was that the issues both schools deal with, and in particular at the council, are very similar to each other. Naturally, there is an -of course- element in that statement as we both are primary schools teaching kids and it is really comparing an apple with an apple. But as explained in a previous president’s column, besides education there are many elements to a school, and School Council also have to look after the school’s clients (students), its assets, finances, safety, and I don’t know how many more items. And all those topics were also discussed at the meeting of this school council. BSPS school council often discusses a variety of topics at the council meeting. Many discussions are related to an ongoing topic (for instance maintenance and finances) and as such council usually reports the state of where we are at on that particular issue. When a project has reached its conclusion council will report back to the community with the outcomes of that project. As you are all aware, one such project which has kept various people quite busy this year is our new uniform. Very soon, if not in this newsletter then in the next one, we hope to inform you all on where we are at with the new uniform. Other projects still run their due course, and we will report on them when a decision is made. Council will start preparing BSPS for next year already too. As we will have a record year of prep students next year, we have to look into how we can best accommodate the extra influx of prep students. Other initiatives to improve our school and prepare it for next year (and possibly beyond) are also on the table and as reported in my last column, council will have a special extended meeting next time to deal with these topics. All initiatives should be properly studied and subsequently council members have currently quite a workload to go through. Hopefully council will be able to report back to the community on some of the initiatives that are currently being considered after its next meeting on 15th August. On Thursday 11th August, Bayswater South Primary School will be holding an Olympics Day.

Between lunch and recess, students will participate in a rotation of games and activities in multi-age groups. We encourage

the students to dress in sporting attire that relates to the Olympics or in colours in support of a country that will be competing

in Rio 2016. Please be mindful that clothing needs to be appropriate to allow the student to participate in the sports related

activities on the day.
