Supervision at games Just a reminder that your students need to be supervised by you. Some parents are either just leaving their kids at school for games or are here with them but letting them run throughout the building with no knowledge of where they are or what they are doing, which can be disruptive and unsafe. Please help with this by supervising your children. Secondary Late Stay We are having an issue with many secondary students who are avoiding Late Stay. When students turn up in other places and are questioned about it, they often say that their parents told them not to go to Late Stay. When students are here at school, we are responsible for them. Therefore, it is important that all students follow the policies in place to ensure their safety. We cannot just have students running the campus or running around town without permission. Times have changed from when we were younger. In this day of trafficking, kidnapping, drugs, shootings, attacks, and much more, we have to work even harder to protect our children. Please encourage them to go where they are supposed to go as stated in our school policy, located in our Handbook. [Click Here] At 3:15 any student who is not picked up, in a school club, meeting with a teacher, or at sports practice must go to late Stay. Again, these policies are in our Handbook and are in place to en-sure supervision and safety of our (your) students. A student who takes off without following the proper procedure of going to Late Stay will face disciplinary consequences. High School Students who have a form on file (see the Info tab for the form) may check in to Late Stay so we know where they are and then go off-campus with your permission. Middle School students should not be going off campus other than the few exceptions that are laid out in the Handbook. In other words, middle school students should go to Late Stay. If a student wishes to attend ball games but are here for Late Stay, they need to go to Late Stay and the Late Stay supervisor will bring the students to the gym and supervise them until Late Stay ends at 5:30. It is not the responsibility of the Late Stay supervisor to stay and supervise the students all evening. Therefore, after 5:30, the students are no longer the school’s responsibility. In oth-er words, at 5:30, they be signed out in the Late Stay book, and the parents must either be here to supervise or pick up their students or must have made arrangements with another parent who is here to watch them. Again, please do not just leave elementary and middle school students unsu-pervised. If a student plays on a team that has a later game or practice, they need to either go home with their parents, be with their parents, or have arrangements made to be supervised by their coach or another responsible adult who has agreed to supervise them. If none of these are possible, they must be in Late Stay. If they are on a team and have a team activity that day, then they are not charged a fee for Late Stay. They just need to sign in for Late Stay as “athletic event.” The key is supervision. They cannot just run off to Target, McDonalds, etc.

Please Read the Handbooks We have had several issues that have come up over the last few weeks, and they stem from not following policies that are in the handbook. Please go to our website’s Info [Click Here] tab and look at the Handbooks, especially if you are unsure of something and need clarification. Progress Reports Progress Reports were emailed out today for those who are current on their bill. If you have concerns about your student's grades please feel free to follow up with a teacher. Elementary Pick Up If you need to go over something with a teacher, please either schedule an appointment with them or wait until they take the class to Late Stay at 3:15. During the pickup time, the teachers’ main focus needs to be on the students and their safety. They would be happy to discuss whatever it is that you need to discuss after they finish pick-up duty. Christmas Programs, Sweet Frog, and Bake Sale The PTO will be having their Annual Christmas Bake Sale Friday, December 8 in the CCS library from 2-4 and before/after each Christmas program that evening. We always have an amazing selection of cookies and fudge perfect for your holidays. Please plan to join us! We will also be having our Sweet Frog fundraiser that same evening. Just come by the Westminster Sweet Frog any time from 6:00 p.m. till closing and tell the cashier you are with CCS. All proceeds from both events will benefit our teachers. Amazon Smile

K2 - Mrs. Richardson This week in K2, we had fun exploring with our senses — see-ing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. We learned about a different sense each day! On Monday, it was “Eye-Spy.” Tuesday we went on a “listening walk.” On Wednesday, we used our noses to discover lots of interesting scents, from flowers and pine trees to chocolate and vanilla! Thursday we were taste testers! We discovered sweet, salty, bitter, and sour. And on Friday, we used our sense of touch. We touched things that were soft and hard, cold and hot, and rough and smooth and talked about their differences. We had a great time, and we thanked God for making us in such a wonderful way! Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/IPjDXl6fs1pSk/

K3 - Mrs. Myers This week the K3 class learned the letter I. We made an igloo using cotton balls. We learned about insects and how they have 6 legs, 3 body parts, and antennae. We also made inchworms and watched a video about how they move. On Thursday we talked about our favor-ite flavor of ice cream and even had ice cream for snack. On Friday we pretended to go to an island. We have also started decorating the room for Christmas. We made wreaths to hang on our wall. We also decorated our tree with candy canes that we painted. We used tissue paper to decorate ornaments and hung them from our ceiling. Next week we learn about weather. Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/2nShumz2TPuoQ/

K4 - Mrs.Crago This week, we learned about the letter J. We also looked at how different countries celebrate Christmas: England’s Christ-mas cards & plum pudding, Germany’s Christmas tree tradi-tions, and many more! Last night, some of our parents had time to shop while we enjoyed a special time of fun! Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/Arz4YkX9ccZ6q/

Kindergarten—Mrs. Bassler and Mrs. Hendra Be ye thankful unto Him, and bless His name! What a wonderful season of thanks we have just celebrat-ed. Kinders were blessed to have Mr. Schott come in and share all about bee keepers. His demonstration was informative and sweet, especially with the taste of real honey! Many thanks to Mr. Schott and Ethan. The kinders made like pilgrims and Indians and enjoyed a real Thanksgiving feast together complete with a Teepee! We all enjoyed learning about our rich heritage and preparing butter and corn bread for our meal. Reciting Psalm 100 to-gether was definitely a highlight of our celebration. A great big thank you to all the parents who brought items for our yummy feast. We especially appreciate Mrs. Schott and Mrs. Holbrook for all the set-up and clean-up help! We learned that the first Thanksgiving feast lasted three full days! Im-agine! We are so blessed to live in our great coun-try. Our buddy readers enjoyed reading time with our Kinders in our Teepee. It made for a real fun and exciting learning environment. We now shift to Christmas and are busy rehearsing for our Christmas play! God is so good! Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/kqY24RaaCnoh9/

1st Grade - Mrs. Beard The boys and girls did an amazing job on our Thanksgiving program last week. They sang and recited poems and scripture, and our theme was thankfulness to God. It was wonderful having so many parents join us. We all have so much to be thankful for! In math we are learning so many new things, and our reading improves each week. We all enjoyed sharing the birthday with the twins, Au-brey and Caleb. Their family is celebrating the birth of a new brother, Jude. Happy birthday to Zoey, who also had a birthday. Thanks for the yummy snack. The class is very busy getting ready for our Christmas program on December 8th, and it will be wonderful. 2nd Grade - Miss Sachs We are back from Thanksgiving break and diligently working to get as much done as pos-sible before Christmas! We celebrated Thanksgiving with a class party and hand-made placemats! We also made our very own butter in a jar and got to try it! Some liked it, but some did not. Before Thanksgiving, 2nd grade has learned about temperature and measurement in math. We felt each other's heads to learn about body temperature, and measured each other with items such as tennis balls and pencils to see how tall we were! In spelling we practiced showing our words in Play-Doh. The students really liked that. In reading, the students are working on expression and watching the punctuation. We're looking forward to our field trip to Turkey Hill Experience this Friday! There's no better day for ice cream than a cold day in December! Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/Y8btiOnrIxNfd/

3rd Grade - Mrs. McLaughlin After a relaxing Thanksgiving break, third grade is back to work. Math has us work-ing with clocks, elapsed time, and calen-dars. In Language, we have begun learning how to use and make contrac-tions. Students have finished all animal reports and characteristics for the Animal Notebook and hopefully are diligently working at home to complete it by December 15. Nate Praay finished his early and already turned it in. He did an amazing job on it! Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/mf06HnhBZlKLP/

4th Grade - Mrs. Eckard

Last Friday the 4th graders made two ap-ple turkeys. We started with huge red de-licious apples and added gum drops and marshmallows. It was fun and sticky. One turkey was for the students to keep and one was for them to give away. We had a guest, Jonathan, he was able to join in on the fun. Our turkey theme is just about over. The apples and the hidden turkeys went home on Friday. Enjoy this blessed time of the year. Be safe as you travel and remember to be thankful to the Lord for His many blessings. Check out what we did this week on our website! https://spark.adobe.com/page/Qj3h6F3PnHHis/

5rd Grade - Miss Castaneda

This week fifth grade had a really good time cre-ating art that is Thanksgiving related and re-flecting on all the things for which they are thankful! They also enjoyed some fun activities planned around this very special holiday and they even got to be "teachers" for a day! We’ve been hard at work on long division and prepar-ing for our Science test. Check out what we did this week on our web-site! https://spark.adobe.com/page/ORsSTgF92cYjT/

• Homework takes longer than it should. She forgets about it or is

distracted by surfing the internet or texting friends and ends up

staying up late the night before an assignment is due to finish it.

• She is an inefficient student. She appears to study for tests, but

performance does not seem to match the time spent studying.

• She has weak reading comprehension. She can get facts from a

text but does not make links between the ideas she reads. She

misses details in instructions on assignments and tests.

• She struggles with friendships because she does not read social

cues or follow conversations. Peers start to reject her, isolate her

or make fun of her.

• She forgets things she needs (e.g., dance shoes or soccer cleats).

This is a classic sign but agreeable girls with ADHD will often have

friends or adults who compensate for them (for example sharing a

pen because she doesn't have one).

• She misplaces her things regularly (e.g. phone or keys).

• She talks, and talks and talks.

• She does not run and climb about like boys but is the classroom

helper and is social and chatty in class.

• She has lots of friends because she is fun to be around but when

she tries to organize activities she seems anxious and indecisive.

Her friends help her make decisions, find her things and keep her

organized.

• She has great ideas and wants to start acting on them right away

but does not finish projects or follow through.

• She is chronically late or is not ready when she needs to be.

• She channels hyperactivity by being involved in many extracurricu-

lar activities like swimming, school clubs and soccer.

• She does not seem to learn from consequences.

• She has wide swings in mood. One moment she is on top of the

world and the next moment she is crushed because of a casual

comment that is taken as harsh criticism.”

Many Discovery students have comorbid diagnoses, which is defined as: the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a

patient. Oftentimes, one of these comorbid diagnoses is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is estimated by the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that 11% of children between the ages of 4 and 17 have ADHD., or approximately 6.4 million children.

With these numbers in mind, I wanted to share some information about ADHD and its symptoms, particularly as it concerns the differences

between girls and boys. Following are excerpts from an article by Meadow Schroeder, an assistant professor of education at the University of

Calgary in The Conversation, Copyright 2017. Some rights reserved. If you would like to read the article in its entirety, it can be found at

http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/27/health/girls-adhd-signs-partner/index.html.

“When asked to describe a typical child with ADHD, most people would describe ‘a young boy who climbs on things, is impatient and does not

do what he is told.’ Few people would describe a bubbly young girl with lots of friends, who works hard to get good grades.

ADHD can look different in girls than boys. A boy who is hyperactive might have trouble sitting in his seat in the classroom. In contrast, a hy-

peractive girl may be out of her seat but have taken on the role of classroom helper. A teacher completing a rating scale might rate the boy

higher on hyperactive questions than the girl because the second example is not seen as disruptive. Thus, girls do not score as high as boys on

these scales and are underrepresented because they do not meet criteria for a diagnosis.

Sometimes, when adults encounter girls who have difficulty meeting their expectations, but the girls are agreeable, they excuse the behaviors

by describing the girls as "ditzy," "dramatic" or "artsy."

CCS Strives to Bring Joy to Others

by Keith Moore & Brittany Restivo

On Wednesday, Nov. 22nd, some of the CCS students made

Christmas cards for our brave police officers and firemen.

Usually, we write to those in the military, but this year we

wrote to the strong men and women here in America serving

every day. Many kids made little pictures on the cards. Some

students also quoted verses along with personal messages

thanking them for all their hard work and for protecting us.

Later that day, we went into the gym to do the activities Mr.

Jennings had prepared for us. We played games for a while,

and later we got to go home at noon to enjoy Thanksgiving

with our families.

CCS Students & Teachers Celebrate Thanksgiving in a Variety of Ways!

Compiled by Jordan Head & Sydney Sykes

What year was Romeo and Juliet set?

Well, we don't really know for certain when "Romeo and Juliet" is set, or when it was written either. Scholars currently think

that the play might plausibly be dated to 1595. We know too that it can't be any later than 1596, or any earlier than 1591.

Where was coffee made?

It was here in Arabia that coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, in a similar way to how it is now prepared. By the 16th

century, it had reached the rest of the Middle East, Persia, Turkey, and northern Africa. Coffee seeds were first exported from

Ethiopia to Yemen.

Is an ostrich's eye bigger than its brain?

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. It is not true that the ostrich hides its head in the sand in time of danger. But young

birds will conceal themselves by lying down and stretching their necks out along the ground.

Random Fun Facts Compiled by Sydney Campbell & Natalie Brodie

CCS teachers and students were asked what they did for Thanksgiving. Here is what they said:

Mr. Wright: He went to his family’s house and ate cheesecake, and got a fidget spinner.

Abby: “I went to my grandparents’” “We ate mashed potatoes … pineapple and bread pudding.”

Mr. Szczepanik: “I went to Julie’s [his wife] family’s house to eat” “and went shopping… and got a bunch

of stuff.”

Mrs. Brown: “I made dinner with my family, and I talked” “I shopped on Friday” (Black Friday)

Mrs. Bittman: “ I made ten pies, and had family come over to my brother’s house.”

Madison: “Spent time with a lot of my family”

Mr. Skidmore: ” I ate food, and went hunting, and I also slept a lot, and worked on my pun jokes.”

Tito: He ate, visited family, watched The Boss Baby and a movie called Pele.
