AtBathurstinqualifying,hisfirstandonlylapwasgoodenoughfor7thfastest,beforeanothercompetitorhadabigcrashwhichbroughtthesessiontoanend.Thiswasaprettygoodresultconsideringthelimitedrunninginthecarandtimeontrack,andAshwaslookingforwardtomixinginwiththechampionshipfrontrunners.
Unfortunatelyfortheteam,thedecisionwasmadetoabandonthequalifyingtimesandinsteadsetthegridforRace1basedonpracticewhichsetthembackto19thforthefirstrace.“Itwasdisappointingthough,thatweweren’tabletostarthigherupinthefirstplaceasperqualifying,asI’mconfidentwecouldhavebeenchallengingforpodiumfinishes,”Ashreported.“Nonetheless,westillfinished10thoverallfortheround.”
InthecurtainraisertotheV8’sAshacquittedhimselfwell,finishingonebehindtheveryexperiencedGlennSeton,racingagainst40regularchampionshipcompetitorsontheworld-famous6.2kmMountPanoramacircuitwasagreateffortindeed.

Threeaimsoffirst-aidincludeactionsthatimmediatelypreservelife,preventfurtherinjuryandpromoterecovery.
BenjaminDisraeli,thefirsttohavesaid:“Iampreparedfortheworst,buthopeforthebest,”providesaperfectmemeforthemindsetrequired.Sure,mostofthetimefirstaidkitsgatherdustandtheoddBand-Aidgetsusedforasavagepapercut;howevertherearetimeswhendecisiveactionisneeded.Forgoodreason.Here’swhy:
Thereareseveraltypesofemergencieswhenevenwithbestintentionsambulanceservicescannotarrivefastenoughtomeetthe first aimoffirstaid:toimmediatelypreservelife.Theyneedandencouragefirst-aiderstostarttheprocesstogivepeoplethebestpossiblechanceofsurvivalandreturningtonormallevelsoffunctioning.Forexample,commencingCPR,usinganAutomatedExternalDefibrillator(AED)incaseofcardiacarrest,relievinganupperairwayobstructionforapersonchoking,andstoppingaseverelybleedingwoundareallsituationswherethedifferencebetweensurvivalandabadoutcomeismeasuredinsecondsormereminutes.Theactionsrequiredinsuchcircumstancesaresimpletolearn,shouldbelearntbyasmanypeopleaspossibleandmakearealdifference.

It’snotjustimmediatelylifethreateningsituationswhenfirst-aidmakesarealmeasurabledifference.Ambulanceservicesalsoneedfirst-aider’shelptomeetthesecond aim:Topreventfurtherinjury.Forexample,thereisevidencethatimmediatelycoolingaburnlessenstheextentanddepthoftheburn.Thismaymeaninsomecasesthedifferencebetweenneedingskingraftsornot;nastyscarringornot.Preventingasuspectedspinalinjuredpatientmovingmaypreventlingeringlong-terminjury.
Immediatelyflushingchemicalssplashedintheeyemaysavesomeone’ssight,andrecognisingthesignsofheartattackandstrokethencallingforhelpcouldpotentiallysavelifeandalsopreserveheartfunctioninthecaseofheartattackorbrainfunctioninthecaseofstroke.Arealdifference.
Promotingrecoveryisthethird aimoffirstaidandthereisevidencethatactionstakenbyfirst-aiderspromotefasterrecoveryfrominjury.Forexample,immediaterest,icetherapyandsimplecompressionbandagingfollowingastrainorspraincanspeedrecovery.

Butwhilemanyviewhearinglossassimplyaninevitablepartofageing,there’sagrowingbodyofevidencethatpointstotheimpactsofhearinglossbeingwiderthanoncethought.Researchersarenowfindinglinksbetweentheconditionandgreaterriskofcognitivedeclineandconditionssuchasdementia,saysaudiologistMeiYenTan,meaningtheissueofmaintaininggoodhearinghealthisbeingbroughtintogreaterfocus.
AnaudiologistatBayAudiology’sLincolnRoadclinicinHenderson,MeiYensayshearinglosscanhavewide-rangingimpactsthatcansignificantlyaffectsufferersdaytoday.
“Whenyourhearingstartstodeclineitcanhavemanyotherconsequences,andthosecanbecomemoreofaconcernasyouage.Forexample,therecanbesignificantsocialimpactsforpeoplewhendifficultieswiththeirgeneralcommunicationleadtoisolationandalossofindependence,”MeiYensays.
“Researchisalsonowgivingusgreaterinsightsintohowhearinglossisrelatedtocognitiveabilitiesandcognitivedecline,andlinkedtoconditionslikedementiaanddepression.Ithinkthoseissuesreallyhighlightjusthowimportantitisforpeopletobeawareoftheirhearinghealth,”sheadds.
“Ahearingcheckisthebestwaytoestablishthecurrentstateofyourhearinghealth,”MeiYensays,“andregularcheck-upsareimportanttomonitoranychangestothatbaseline.”BayAudiologyoffersfreehearingcheckstoanyoneaged18yearsandover,andrecommendstheseannuallyforeveryoneaged50-plus.

Andthereareafewfurthereverydaymeasuresthatanyonecantaketohelpmaintaingoodhearinghealth.
Firstandforemost,it’simportanttoprotectearswhenexposedtoloudsounds.Agradualdeclineinhearing,particularlyathigherfrequencies,isexpectedwithage,buthearingatthesefrequenciescanalsobeaffectedbyexposuretoloudnoise.Protectingyourearswhendoingnoisyworkorattendingloudconcerts,therefore,isamusttopreventfurther,unnecessaryhearingdeterioration.Thosewhohaveworkedinenvironmentswherethey’vebeenregularlyexposedtonoise-anyonefromgardeners,tohairdressers,toairportgroundstaff-needtobeparticularlyawareofinflictinganyfurtherdamage.
Andanothertipintoday’sworldwherewe’reoftenconnectedtodevices-ifusingheadphones,particularlyinnoisyenvironments,noise-cancellingoptionsarerecommended.
It’salsonotadvisedyouremovewaxfromyourearsyourself,cautionsMeiYen,whosuggestspeopleinsteadseeanearnurseoranotherappropriateprofessionalwhowillusetheproperequipmenttoremoveanybuildup.
