    Dude!Wheres My

    Bailout?"Setting Domestic Priorities ... create

incentives to focus instruction on them

and neglect the others" Frank Levy

If you believe the tell-a-vision, banks

    are going under and once-dominant

    American corporations, like GM, Ford

and Chrysler are standing in line for

bailouts but nothing seems more impor-

tant these days than being well hung.

As the credit crisis has applied a lead

weight around the U.S. economy, much

of the attention has been on how it isaffecting business. But individuals are

hurting too, and many are in search of

their own personal bailout, which could

lead to drastic reactions, such as bank-

ruptcy, debt default, having a small

    weenie or even criminal activity.

With two million people losing their

homes to foreclosure this year and

unemployment at a five year high, per-

sonal bankruptcies are on the rise

again as well, up more than 28% overlast year. Expectations are that bank-

ruptcies will top 1.1 million for the year

but apparently getting laid is also a top

priority of the day as it could be fun.

Too much debt is one of the key rea-

sons that more and more Americans

    are being driven into bankruptcy.

But with laws tightening to make

    bankruptcy filings more difficult/expen-

    sive, bankruptcies are nothing like

bailouts or the inability of sustaining anerection for hours at a time! Whoa!

We thought your readers might beinterested to know that you dont haveto endure the recent barrage of tele-marketeers. The National Do Not CallRegistry is open for business, puttingconsumers in charge of the telemar-keting calls they get at home. TheFederal government created thenational registry to make it easier andmore efficient for you to stop gettingtelemarketing calls you dont want. You can register online atWWW.DONOTCALL.GOV or call toll-

free, 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236), from the number you wishto register. Registration is free.Placing your number on the registrywill stop most, but not all, telemarket-ing calls.

Rongnmarie, did a little researchand theres more to it. The Do-Not-Call Fee Extension Act of 2007 alsosets the annual fees telemarketers

canpay to access the registry in fiscalyear 2009. Its $54 for each area codeof data accessed or $14,850 foraccess to every area code in the reg-istry, whichever is less.

We didnt miss the Republican win

prediction in the October issue andjust wondering how crow tastes thesedays. America will never elect a manwhos middle name is Hussein wasanother quote I recall but well be inIraq for years to come still remains tobe seen. You are batting 2 and 0.Weve all witnessed the new true

patriotism which was long overdue nothanks to people like you and the last8 years. Please exclude my emailaddress. Dalia.

Well Dalia, we have to hand it toyou dear lady, youve put us in ourplace but still know nothing aboutwhat crow taste like. It couldnt beworse than disgust or embarrass-ment. What we do know is the per-

centage of the American public thatsbrain-dead these days which is atleast 52% and adding the yet to betallied percentage of the Republicanbrain-dead equates to a scarythought.

Patriotism? Youve got us started. The American who volunteers to fightin Iraq and the American who proteststhe war both express a truer patriot-ism than the American who treats it as

a distant spectacle. You are who youare, how do you like it? And finally, thelast 8 years is what were all going tobe hearing a lot of as our Presidentwill have to have somethingeloquentto say each time he attempts and failsto deliver on his campaign changewe can believe in rhetoric whichinclude bringing the troops home, andfixing healthcare and the economy.

    Opinion Edit

    The Perils ofMakinga Buck

    By JD Tuccilli, HHI

    The most socialist leaning President

weve ever had is headed for the Ovaloffice. Another ex-lawyer has lied hisway to the top, duping more than halfthe population into believeing that hewill change things. Convincing thegullible that 95% of the population willbe much better off with his plans to taxthe incomes of the highest wage earn-ers and spreading the wealth.

Definition:A capital gain is the prof-it that results from investments into a

capital asset, such as stocks, bondsor real estate, which exceeds the pur-chase price. Key word being profit.

Beneath Obama's flowery rhetoriclies a dangerous economic plan thatwill most likely wreak yet more severehavoc on our economy. In light of themost recent bailouts to the tune ofover a trillion dollars, where do youthink hell get the money?

Obama says he is absolutely com-mitted to almost doubling the capitalgains rate - something he will easilyaccomplish with a DemocratCongress. In the coming months -when investors realize that Obamawill raise the cap gains rate - there willlikely be a stampede of asset sales asinvestors rush to take their profits nowto avoid Obama's increased tax ratesnext year. Makes sense.

But just in case anyones missed it,were all in a sinking boat where capi-tol gains arent what they used to be.Is Obama planning to wait until it allturns around? And the extra SocialSecurity tax? Hello? Everyday thou-sands of people are losing their jobs. Our President elect is experimentingwith our future and we have to doubthe has the wherewithal to do so. Hehas sold the majority on tax reform ata time when tax revenues are plum-meting. Where pray tell will theDemocrats get the money they plan tospend on another proposed stimu-

    lous package?Senator Barack Obama declared

recently that he wants to reform ourtax code so that it rewards work andnot just wealth. We think that is agreat goal if it means a simple tax sys-tem with low marginal tax rates.Unfortunately, a close inspection ofObamas proposals reveals some-thing disquieting: he would raise mar-ginal tax rates for many middle-income taxpayers, a bad move for

    anyone seeking to promote economicgrowth.

In economics, according toWikipedia online encyclopedia, mar-ginal tax rates are important becausethey determine incentives to increaseincome; at high marginal tax rates, theindividual has less incentive to earnmore. Public discussion of "hightaxes" often refers to overall tax ratesor marginal taxes.

Although Obama is offering a newseries of tax breaks, they underminerather than improve economic incen-tives. First, whether or not you getthose breaks will depend on yourincome. In Washington, taking awaytax breaks as families work harder toearn more money is called a phase-out. Economists have a differentname for itthey call it a tax.Reducing a persons tax credit as his

income goes up also reduces hisincentive to earn more income.

Second, Obama would make somecredits refundable for families withcredits bigger than their tax liability, which would also have the nefariouseffect of raising marginal tax rates. For example, consider a worker in the10 percent bracket with $1,000 of taxliability, before credits, who claims$1,200 in credits. The tax impact of

earning an extra $100 depends onwhether the credit is refundable. If its

not refundable, theres no tax penaltyon earning the extra $100 becausethe workers tax liability stays at zero.

But if the credit is refundable, earning

the extra money pushes the tax upfrom negative $200 to negative$190thats a 10 percent penalty onearning income.

Senator Obamas proposed taxcuts for the middle class are actuallymarginal rate hikes in disguise. If hesaware of this then our President is justanother glib conman. If he isnt, thenhe doesnt know what hes doing.

Doing the Math: SenatorObama would raise the top individualtax rate back to 39.6 percent, imposean additional 2 to 4 percent tax onearnings for some over the existingSocial Security wage cap, and bringback the phase-out of the personalexemption and certain itemizeddeductions for higher-income taxpay-ers. When added up, the top effectivemarginal tax rate rises from 37.9 per-

cent to roughly 48 to 50 percent.Note: These calculations work as

follows: (1) 37.9 percent equals thecurrent 35 percent top income tax rate

plus the current 2.9 percent Medicaretax rate; and (2) 48 to 50 percentequals Obama's 39.6 percent topincome tax rate plus the 2.9 percentMedicare tax rate plus his additional2-to-4 percent hike in the SocialSecurity tax rate, plus an additionalroughly 4.5 percent for the phase-outof personal exemption and certainitemized deductions.Source:http://taxfoundation.org/blog/

show/23491.htmlAnd so the debate about taxes is

really a debate about the role that ourbiggest earners play in our economy.Increasingly, those who sit at the cen-ter of the Democratic Party seem tominimize that role. One theme of theDemocratic convention was that gov-ernment works, and that apparentlyapplies especially to the economy.

And so op-ed columnists now tell us

that the real key to growth is theDemocratic model of using govern-ment to drive the economy throughvehicles like research dollars(although those research dollarscome from taxes on private earnings). We seem likely headed, in otherwords, toward a period of rule bythose who believe that it is govern-ment which is the motor of the world, and that its selfish to think about

keeping too much of the fruits of yourlabor for yourself.

Barack Obama has generated muchof this years discussion with his planto raise taxes on those earning$250,000 and up and reduce them onmiddle and lower income families. But as fascinating as the discussionhas become, we seem to be driftingaway from the important question ofwhat impact do taxes have on work

and productivity (and hence the econ-omy), especially among our mostindustrious and innovative citizens--those whom Ayn Rand once saidpowered the motor of the world?

Will the rich, the productive, theinventive, buy into this? Or will theysee their ambition and learning andinvention as unappreciated and over-taxed? Ultimately withdrawing someof it at great cost to society. It will be

    an interesting and revealing experi-ment.

The Rail is pleased to bring you a bit edit regarding the latest mind bog-

gling absurdities and follies of the looney left. From Staff reports. Jurys In, Sanitys Out

Pupils Rights?UK. Children as young as five will win the legal right to tell teachers how

they should be taught and disciplined for bad behaviour. The LiberalDemocrats tabled the amendment after a Ofsted survey suggested a third ofpupils do not believe they are properly listened to by their schools.

We seem likelyheaded toward aperiod of rule by

those who believethat it is govern-ment which is the

motor of the world, and that its selfishto think about keep-ing too much of thefruits of your labor

    for yourself.

The Scheme Of ThingsScheme Of ThingsvvswsBy Roger Franklin

    UndergroundBound

Believe what you will, that theMessiah has arrived and every little

thing will be OK, or that preparing forthe worst now is the order of the day.

Regardless, times such as these tend

to bring the survival instinct a bit clos-er to the surface. Unless youre feel-

ing confident that all of this will workitself out, it may be wise to aquaint

yourself with what history has taught

    us.The division between ideologies

hasnt been this clearly defined sinceHitler took on the World. The oppos-

ing ideologies appear such that thefree market, aka laissez-faire, and a

    Government controlled economy, aka

Market socialism, are going toe to toe.

With so much private Industry nowstanding with their hands out, it lookslike the free market has collapsed and

    thus lies the distinct division.

Socialism refers to a broad set ofeconomic theories of social organiza-

tion advocating state or collectiveownership and administration of the

means of production, distribution ofgoods, and the creation of an egalitar-

    ian society. Modern socialism originat-

ed in the late nineteenth-centuryworking class political movement.

Karl Marx posited that socialismwould be achieved via class struggle

    and a proletarian revolution which

represents the transitional stagebetween capitalism and communism.

    But obviously, todays Capitolists

    have suddenly changed their minds.

Theyve given up. Socialism is win-ning out.

Market socialism is a term used to

    denote two different economic sys-

tem(s) based in socialism. The firstterm relates to an economy directed

and guided by socialist planners oneither a local or state level, while the

second refers to a system of freeexchange with socialist organizations

    being predominant. What were see-

ing today appears to be a culminationof what began years ago with hand-

outs such as Welfare, food stampsand Section 8 housing. Ergo the liber-

    al.

Capitolists tend to believe that min-imizing taxes decreases the chance

that the government would fund badprograms as such and prevents citi-

    zens from needing government

money because they have more of

their own. Ergo the Conservative.Socialists mainly share the belief

    that capitalism unfairly concentrates

power and wealth among a small seg-ment of society that controls money

and creates an unequal society. While

this neither includes nor sits well withthe innovative and inspired man or

woman that sacrifices, chooses towork 80 rather than 40 hours each

    week and ultimately acquires a

degree of wealth the old fashionedway, they are nevertheless consid-

ered a part of the problem. While some are actually putting

blind faith in another Ex-lawyer, and

others are convinced the "Messiah"has arrived and help is on the way,

there are a few that think stocking up

on beans, rice and bullets is a viable

option. Drastic, desperate, knee-jerkreaction or not, it is nevertheless onthe minds of more than a few. We

have seen and talked to some of

these folks and were here to tell youthat we have neither lost our minds

nor become the creators of some darktale of death and destruction.

So how far will the economy slideand whats in store should it take a

few years to recover? Obviously, no

one really knows. For the time being, those mindlessly expecting a

Change to kick in currently have noworries. And those thinking beans,

rice and bullets are of course gearing

for something that hasnt happenedyet. Meanwhile, there are those that

may be thinking about all the opportu-nities that present themselves today.

    The underground economy and the

    black market are markets consisting

of all commerce on which applicabletaxes and/or regulations of trade arebeing avoided. The terms are also

often known as the underdog, shadoweconomy, black economy or parallel

    economy.(Source: Wikipedia encyclopedia)

    In modern societies the under-

ground economy covers a vast arrayof activities. It is generally smallest in

    countries where economic freedom is

greatest, and becomes progressivelylarger in those areas where corrup-

tion, regulation, or legal monopoliesrestrict legitimate economic activity.

The key words of course being cor-

    ruption, regulation, and legal monopo-

lies. This is sounding more familiar all

    the time Isnt it?

Goods acquired illegally can takeone of two price levels:

They may be less expensive than

legal market prices, as the supplierdoes not incur the normal production

costs or pay the usual taxes. Alternatively, illegally supplied

goods may be more expensive than

normal prices, as the product in ques-tion is difficult to acquire or produce,

dangerous to deal with or may hardlybe available legally.

    The underground economy should

not be confused with the black mar-ket, which deals strictly with illicit or

illegal activities. A number of activitiesin the underground economy do fall

into a gray area legally and morallyspeaking, but many cash-based busi-

    nesses are considered legitimate, or

at least work under the tacit approvalof the government itself. Black market

activities are almost always under thecontrol of organized crime or corrupt

    governments.

But unless you are independentlywealthy, or have charity in the hole

somewhere, you most assuredly havesurvival in mind these days which

comes closer to food, clothing andshelter legal or otherwise. As every

industry in the Country is on the

precipice, it may be only a matter oftime before the underground econo-

my touches everyone. Just let 20 mil-lion unemployed men and women hit

the streets, and rice, beans and bul-

lets may be in short supply and goingfor a premium.

    Socialists mainly share the

    belief that capitalism unfair-

    ly concentrates power and

    wealth among a small seg-

    ment of society that controls

    capital and creates an

    unequal society. This also

    includes the innovative and

    inspired man or woman that

    sacrifices, risks and ulti-

    mately acquires a degree of

    wealth the old fashioned way.

Hollow Spy CoinsWe know that coins can be used to

play a prank on others by squirting

water, but here is something muchmore serious. It allows you to storeprecious information within withoutgiving the game away. Do you have amicroSD memory card containingrisqu images of your weekend thatyou do not want anyone else to see, ever? Well, store it within the HollowSpy Coin of course! You can use it asa form of currency without beingdetected or charged for fraud, although that wouldnt make real

financial sense since the nickel alonewill cost $30.

    Harley Hail Yeahs!

In 1903, the same year Henry Ford incorporated the Ford Motor Company

and the Wright brothers first flew, William Harley and his friends Arthur andWalter Davidson launched the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. They gave

their bike a quality engine, so it could prove itself in races, but planned to

manufacture it as a transport vehicle.

That same year the merchant, C. H. Lange, sold the first officially distrib-

uted Harley-Davidson in Chicago, a city given to "motoracing" and auto-tour-

ing. Another of the Davidson brothers, William, joined the company, which

soon burst the seams of its first manufacturing center and, by 1906, had to

move to larger quarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

knows what to do now. Our newPresident has ridden to theWhitehouse on the Change we canbelieve in mantra but immediatelybegan choosing his cabinet from oldschool Dems. Obama based his innovative cam-paign on an emphatic and convincingcommitment to change the culture ofWashington and bring in new people, new ideas, and new ways of doing

business. But now, Obama has defi-nitely changed his tune. As president-elect, he's brought back the oldWashington hacks, party regulars, and Clinton sycophants that he so fre-quently disparaged. Like JimmyCarter, the last President who ran asan outsider, Obama has reached outto the same old folks who dominatethe Democratic Party and representthe status quo.

His Transition Committee looks likea reunion of the Clinton

Administration. No new ideas of howto reform the system there. TheChairman, John Podesta, wasClinton's Chief of Staff. He presidedover the outrageous last minute par-dons and his style is strictly inside-the-beltway and make-no-waves.

Washington insider President-electfind anyone who isn't a Beltway has-

    been?

Judging by the appointments to histransition committee and leaks about

possible top staff and Cabinet choic-es, Obama appears to be practicing

the politics of status quo pork. Onething is for certain regarding our

Presidents promises and that is theFreedom of Choice Act.

Sen. Barack Obama became a co-

sponsor of the 2007 Senate version of

    the bill (S. 1173). Responding to a

question regarding how he would pre-serve reproductive rights in a speechgiven to the Planned Parenthood

Action Fund on July 17, 2007, he

declared "The first thing I'd do, aspresident, is sign the Freedom of

Choice Act. That's the first thing thatI'd do.

For the folks unawares this Act willoverturn partial birth abortion bans,

    scrap parental notification laws, elimi-

nate bans on taxpayer-funded abor-tions -- that's what the Freedom of

Choice Act does. Illustrious editorFranklin declares the partial birth

abortion is the single most brutal,

    inhumane procedure today.

    Flailing & Bailing

    Another day, another bailout. Little

Joe thinks that all this bailout talk isbringing the schemers out of the

woodwork. This time homeowners getto benefit from mortgage-modification

programs, designed to stem the tide offoreclosures by making it easier for

borrowers to stay current on their

loans. But the latest plans from Fannie Mae

and Freddie Mac, joining banks suchas J.P. Morgan Chase and Citigroup,

    hold plenty of risks.

    Take investors in mortgage-backed

securities. Modifications to mortgageholders' interest rates could leavesome MBS holders with reduced inter-

    est payments. Forgiveness of princi-

pal, meanwhile, could lead to capitallosses.

A bigger worry could be that thesemodification programs are too effec-

tive. In that case, "many current bor-rowers will wave the white flag of sur-

render and also try to get a modifica-

tion," Rod Dubitsky, a senior strategistfor asset-backed securities at Credit

Suisse, wrote in a recent report. The danger is that loan holders who

    otherwise could meet their payments

would decide to fall behind to get theircut of the bailout. That could unleash

a chain reaction that drives defaultrates even higher.

That means another dose of moralhazard. Federal officials stopped wor-

rying months ago about that for com-panies, as they piled up bailout uponbailout to keep the financial system

from collapsing. But its collapsinganyway folks. Now officials risk inject-

ing warped incentives into the behav-

    Its a Hit!

    Austrailia

    The much-trumpeted epic Australia

    arrived in theaters on Thanksgiving,

providing grand entertainment toturkey-stuffed viewers. It's filled with

glamour, gorgeous scenery and has asocial conscience. It's long, but that's

to be expected for a film of its scale.

Set across the backdrop of a raciallydivided country on the eve of World

War II, it is directed by Baz Luhrmann(Moulin Roge and Strictly Ballroom)

and stars Nicole Kidman and HughJackman. Unless Hollywood decides

to release some decent movies after

a lame year, Australia probably willget some kind of Oscar attention and

is sure to be a box office hit.

The Duch e s s Starring: Keira Knightley & RalphFiennes Directed by: Saul Dibb

This elaborate period piece is sure towin a nomination for Best Costumes

and is worth seeing for that reasonalone. But The Duchess is a pleasant

surprise in that it's more than abodice-ripping costume drama,

    although those elements are definite-

ly there, and in abundance. The film will be enjoyed more than

    women than by men and

should be a particular hit withfans of the late Princess

    Diana.The Duchess is based on

the true story of GeorgianaCavendish, the Duchess ofDevonshire in the late 18th

century. Like Diana, she wonthe hearts of the people and

set fashion trends in her day. Also

like Diana, she married a cold, unfeel-ing man years older than herself, and

her personal life was filled with mis-ery. And in another parallel to Diana's

life, her much older husband outlivedher and married his mistress after her

death. What is so fascinating about

the similarities between the twowomen is that Diana was the direct

descendant of Georgiana.Few other actresses can outmatch

    Keira Knightley's consistent beauty

displayed in this movie, which high-lights her cheekbones and flawless

skin in every scene; however, Nicole

Kidman is a good rival in Australia.Knightley competes on screen and in

    her marriage with Ralph Fiennes,

    whose character is the

    antithesis of her own.

Fiennes is in his element asthe quietly cruel, dead-eyed

duke, who treated his dogsbetter than his wife. The

    most powerful man in

England after the king, heruled with an iron fist. The

fact that his wife was bright, beautifuland the darling of the entire nation

only made him resent her, and he

used all of his power to punish her forit.

The film opens with the duke nego-tiating with Georgiana's mother to

marry the 17-year-old. He was con-sidered at the time to be the catch of

all England, but the marriage turned

out to be a match made in hell for theyoung girl. The duke's only interest in

her was that she produce an heir forhim.

He seduced her best friend, Lady

Elizabeth (Hayley Atwell) and openlycontinued an affair with her, bringing

her into the royal home to live withthem, humiliating Georgiana. The

Duchess came to terms with the

agreement by taking a lover of herown, Charles Grey, an old family

friend who later became England'sprime minister. However, the Duke

did not agree that what's good for thegoose is good for the gander. He

    became enraged by Georgiana's

affair and effectively put an end to itby threatening to take her children

away from her and ruin Charles' polit-ical career if she did not end the rela-

    tionship. She capitulated by breaking

off the affair, but not without announc-ing to the duke that she was pregnant

with her lover's child. Her forthright-ness was further punished by the

duke, who had the baby taken away

from her.The movie is solid, benefiting from

the extensive research used byauthor Amanda Foreman for her best-

selling 1998 biography of Georgiana, the book on which the film is based.

It's a sad story about a woman who

was the most popular figure in hercountry, except in her own home.

    Happy-Go-

    Sally Hawkins, Eddie Marsan and

    Alexis Zegerman Dir: Mike Leigh

Watching this movie was a strange

experience. Hours after seeing it, I

was glad I did, although sittingthrough it was not very enjoyable.Throughout the film, I kept wondering

what the movie's point was and why

the critics loved it so much. Criticsacross the board have given it four or

five stars, praising it as a funny, uplift-ing movie. I kept waiting to laugh or

be uplifted, but that didn't happen

often enough. Most of the funnyscenes were not very funny, and the

good feelings imbued by the moviedidn't come until hours after it ended.

The indie film set in London focus-es on a short period in the life of

    Poppy (Sally Hawkins), a 30-year-old

primary school teacher with an irre-pressible spirit. One critic describes

her as "occasionally annoying." Thatis an understatement. The hyperki-

netic Poppy is extremely annoying for

most of the movie. On top of that, there is virtually no plot and the lan-

guage is hard to understand. Notonly are the fast-speaking Cockney

    accents confusing; the mannerisms

and expressions are hard to relate to.It's hard to imagine an American audi-

ence really appreciating this movie, despite what the critics say.

    Classic Film Quotes:

When all was black & white

"Elementary, my dear Watson!" - was a

phrase never spoken by the lead char-

acter in the many Sherlock Holmes nov-

els from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This

quote was rather found in a film review

in the New York Times on October 19,

1929. It became popularized only after

its trademark use in The Return of

    Sherlock Holmes (1929) (the first

Holmes film with sound), with Clive

    Brook and H. Reeves-Smith.

    It Could Be A

Lot Worse..,But it isnt, its only this bad.

Remember back in September, whenCongress was told it had to absolute-ly, positively pass that $700 billionbailout so the government could buyup toxic debt securities and get creditflowing again? It did, costing somelawmakers their seats in the last elec-

tion but hey, that plan has now beenscrapped. Or has it? The governmenthasn't bought any toxic debt to speakof. Or have they? One local mortgagebanking source let us know that theFeds have been throwing $250Knotes at banks left and right with nostrings attached.

There were some uncomfortablemoments last month when the CEOsof Ford,General Motors and Chrysler

trooped to Capitol Hill to begCongress for money to stay in busi-ness. One of those momentsoccurred when it was revealed thatthe executives had each arrived ontheir companies' private jets. Theydidn't even think about jet-pooling tosave a few bucks, much less flyingcommercial. Another occurred when itbecame clear than none had broughtwith them a plan for how they would

use the infusion of taxpayer money.

So who do you believe?Regardless, now there's a new plan. And yeah, half that $700 billion hasalready been spent and there isnt asingle individual in the Country feelingany relief. The upside is that our Statehas no Insurance or Auto Industry todepend on and thats a definite plus. With Toruism being SCs mainIndustry and gas currently below $2 agallon, were in as good a shape as itgets and thou the Holiday seasonmay not be what its been were antic-ipating a festive month. Delights!Venison Chop with Berry Sauce

This recipe makes the most of theclassic combination of game meatand slightly tart red berries. It's novel,it's lower in fat than beef or lamb, andit makes a great match with a Rhnered.

    Venison Chop with Berry Sauce

4 venison double chops, about 2

pounds Marinade (recipe follows) 4 Roma tomatoes, chopped 2 tablespoons dried currants 1 cup fresh or frozen huckleberries(or other berries) 2 cups veal broth (or 1 cup beefbroth plus 1 cup chicken broth) 2 tablespoons fruity olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper

Marinade 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 rib celery, chopped 1 small carrot, chopped 1 shallot, chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 cups dry red wine 1 tablespoon peppercorns, cracked 2 or 3 sprigs thyme or 1 large sprigsage 1 bay leaf

    1. Trim the venison chops, removingthe bones to make medallions.Immerse them in the marinade in aglass, plastic or stainless-steel con-tainer just large enough to hold them.Cover the container and refrigeratethe medallions overnight. Reservethe bones.2. The next day, brown the bones for15 to 20 minutes in a skillet filmed

with oil, or brush them with oil andbake them at 475 F for 30 minutes.

    3. Remove the medallions from themarinade and set them aside in therefrigerator.4. Transfer the marinade to asaucepan. Add the browned bones, the tomatoes, 1 tablespoon of the cur-rants and all but 1 tablespoon of theberries. Boil gently until the mixturereduces in volume to 1 cup, about 20minutes. Add the broth and continueboiling gently until the mixture

reduces again to 1 cup. Strain thismixture through a fine sieve andreturn it to a clean saucepan. Add theremaining tablespoon of currants andthe berries. Simmer for 2 to 3 min-utes. Taste for seasoning. Keep thesauce warm while you cook the veni-son.5. Heat the olive oil in a skillet largeenough to accommodate the venison.Over high heat, brown the medallions

3 to 4 minutes on each side, season-ing them with salt and pepper to taste.

The meat should be light pink, notred. Remove the medallions from theskillet to paper towels to rest for 2minutes.6. Serve the medallions with thesauce and fresh noodles tossed witholive oil, salt and pepper.Serves 4.

MarinadeIn a small saucepan, heat the olive

oil and brown the celery, carrot, shal-lot and garlic for 5 to 7 minutes. Stir inthe remaining ingredients. Simmerthe mixture for 10 minutes. Let it cool.

In addition, a combination oflittle sleep and overnight-elevatedblood pressure appears to be linkedto an increased risk of the disease.

    Know your Grapes?Pinot Noir (red)

Pinot Noir is the classic grape of red burgundy, whose greatest winesare concentrated in the east and south-east-facing limestone hills of

Burgundy's Cte d'Or. This thin-skinned grape is a notoriously tem-peramental variety, which has proved difficult to grow in certain cli-mates and soils. There's no other grape like Pinot Noir with its won-

derfully heady perfumes, and thrillingly pure, sweet, red berry flavoursof raspberry, loganberry, mulberry, cherry and strawberry. It takes well

to French oak and, in bottle, develops truffley and gamey undertones.Along with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir is one of the

major grape varities in Champagne, and plantings of Pinot in the region

are even more extensive than those in Burgundy itself. Despite its fick-le nature, it is a tribute to its desirability among consumers and pro-

ducers and it has inspired growers all over Europe and the New World.

    Bio:

    John Hooker19172001

Hooker was born on August 22,

    1917 in Coahoma County near

Clarksdale, Mississippi, the youngestof the eleven children of William

Hooker (18711923), a sharecropperand a Baptist preacher, and Minnie

Ramsey (1875?). Hooker and hissiblings were home-schooled. They

were permitted to listen only to reli-

gious songs, with his earliest musicalexposure being the spirituals sung in

church. In 1921, his parents separat-ed. The next year, his mother married

William Moore, a blues singer whoprovided John's first introduction to

the guitar (and whom John would

later credit for his distinctive playingstyle).

Hooker's recording career began in1948 when his agent placed a demo

disc, made by Hooker, with the Bihari

brothers, owners of the ModernRecords label. The company initially

    released an up-tempo number,

"Boogie Chillen", which becameHooker's first hit single. Though theywere not songwriters, the Biharis

    often claimed co-authorship of songs

that appeared on their labels, thussecuring songwriting royalties for

themselves, in addition to theirstreams of income.

    Sometimes these songs were older

tunes renamed (B.B.King's "Rock MeBaby"), anonymous jams ("B.B.'s

Boogie") or songs by employees(bandleader Vince Weaver). The

Biharis used a number of pseudo-

nyms for songwriting credits: Juleswas credited as Jules Taub; Joe as

Joe Josea; and Sam as Sam Ling. One song by John Lee Hooker,

"Down Child" is solely credited to"Taub", with Hooker receiving no

    credit for the song whatsoever.

Another, "Turn Over a New Leaf" is

credited to Hooker and "Ling".Despite being illiterate, Hooker was

a prolific lyricist. In addition to adapt-

    ing the occasionally traditional blues

lyric (such as "if I was chief of police,I would run her right out of town"), he

freely invented many of his songsfrom scratch. Recording studios in the

    1950s rarely paid black musicians

more than a pittance, so Hookerwould spend the night wandering from

studio to studio, coming up with newsongs or variations on his songs for

each studio. Due to his recording con-tract, he would record these songs

    under obvious pseudonyms such as

"John Lee Booker", "Johnny Hooker",or "John Cooker."

His early solo songs were recordedunder Bernie Besman. John Lee

Hooker rarely played on a standard

beat, changing tempo to fit the needs

of the song. This often made it difficultto use backing musicians who werenot accustomed to Hooker's musical

vagaries. For much of this time periodhe recorded and toured with Eddie

Kirkland, who is still performing as of

2008.He fell ill just before a tour of

Europe in 2001 and died soon after-wards at the age of 83. The last song

Hooker recorded before his death, is

"Ali D'Oro", a collaboration with theItalian soul singer Zucchero, in which

Hooker sang the chorus "I lay downwith an angel". He was survived by

    eight children, nineteen grandchil-

    dren, numerous great-grandchildrenand a nephew.

Among his many awards, Hookerhas a star on the Hollywood Walk of

Fame and in 1991 he was inductedinto the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

and won a Grammy LifetimeAchievement Award.

g ywe should have let the play go through."Green saidthe confusion occurred because there was a mis-understanding about whether Rivers' pass orTomlinson's lateral was in question.

Asked about the officiating - the Steelers drew115 yards in penalties to the Chargers' 5 -

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin declined to com-ment."No, I have never seen a game ended with13-to-1 in penalties, but I am not answering ques-tions about the officiating," Tomlin said.

The first 11-10 game in NFL history shouldn'thave ended that way, referee Scott Green saidafter a last-minute touchdown was errantly takenaway from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.Theofficiating mistake didn't affect the outcome sincethe Steelers still would have won, but the touch-down would have changed the score to 17-10 - or,

more likely, 18-10, since the teams were lined upfor an extra-point try that was never attempted.

    How Points AreShaved

If an influential player performed poorly enough tothrow one game to the opposing team, for

instance, he'd likely spend much of the next gameon the bench, rendering him useless as a fixer. Butpoint shaving is a more subtle art: Players on thetake don't get paid to throw games--they get paid towin by just a little less than they're expected to.Point shaving works because of the point spread.Invented in the early 1940s by Charles McNeil, aprep school math teacher and bookmaker, thespread is the number of points that one teamseems likely to beat another by, as set by individ-ual bookmakers. Whether the bookie is on the up-

and-up at a Las Vegas casino or Paulie Walnuts ina North Jersey social club hardly matters: to makemoney, bookies just need to get an equal amountof cash wagered on either side of a contest. Theyaccomplish this by adjusting the spread. If theLakers are favored tobeat the Celtics by sevenpoints, say, and suitcasesfull of money start comingin betting on the Celtics tocover, the spread will getbumped down in an effortto get more people totake the Lakers. This bal-ancing act guarantees aprofit because of what'scalled "the vig"--the feethat gamblers pay theirbookie on any winningbet (calculated at 11/10).Since bookies take in 100percent of the moneyfrom losing bets, but payout only 90.91 percent of

gthey profit nomatter whowins the game-- so long asthey cancajole the pub-

lic into puttingup an equalamount onboth teams. There's noth-ing objectively"right" about agiven spread:it just reflects where the public is parking its money, and how bookies anticipate the action. And thepublic doesn't always behave rationally.

As a result, it's not all that hard for a crooked play-er to exploit the spread--just lighten up a little ondefense, make a few key turnovers, slip once ortwice in transition, and the crucial two or threepoints are shaved off your team's victory margin.College basketball seems particularly vulnerable tofunny money, since the players tend to be young, easily influenced, and cash-deprived. An analysisby JustinWolfers, aUniversity of

    Pennsylvaniae c o n o m i s t ,suggests thatpoint shavingcorrupts per-haps 6 percentof games withlarge spreadsat the collegelevel (or 500hundred total

    games over the16 years heinvestigated).
