PORTUGUESEHIGHEREDUCATIONSYSTEMHigher education is organised as a binary system, with University and Polytechnic education. Although both teach Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, the biggest difference is in the academic approach: Universities focus on theoretical knowledge leading to research while Polytechnics focus on applied knowledge, professionally orientated, leading to applied research.

BACHELOR’SDEGREESAt Polytechnics, Bachelors have 180 ECTS units and last six semesters. The first cycle of studies ensures students acquire skills and knowledge to enter the labour market. Students must complete all curricular units to get the degree and be recognised by professional orders.

MASTER’SDEGREESPolytechnic Masters may have between 90 and 120 ECTS credits and last three to four semesters. The second cycle of studies ensures students acquire a professional specialization. Students must complete all curricular units and successfully defended in public their thesis their project work or their traineeship report to get the degree.

LANGUAGEAll classes are taught in Portuguese, but students can receive teacher support and study material/bibliography in English. Evaluations and exams can also be done in English.
