CEDIA (the Custom Electronic De-sign & Installation Association) isleveraging the opportunities af-forded by ISE’s extensive visitor baseto further its drive for increasedmembership across Region 1.

The trade association has alreadyderived impressive results from its bidto attract further members across theRegion 1 territory of Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, India andPakistan. It has confirmed the Region1 membership of Samsung andPanasonic during the show.

Italy, Spain and the Netherlandsare among the latest countries to haveascended to Level 2 status – meaningthat they each have in excess of 10members – while non-UK countriesaccounted for 60% of all new mem-bers last year.

Wendy Griffiths, executive di-rector of CEDIA Region 1, told TheISE Daily that the organisation isseeking to enhance its relevance tonon-English-speaking markets. Inaddition to making informationand resources available in otherlanguages, the process entails “taking on board the different elements of each market, and thefact that different markets have[contrasting expectations]”.

“There is no such thing as a standard CEDIA member,” echoedCEDIA chairman Robert Hallam.

The organisation is underliningits international focus by holding a

“It’s not just about the excellent pre-sentations,” said Adrian Cotterill, edi-tor of dailydooh.com, summarisingMonday’s Digital Signage Conference,“it’s about the coming together, thesharing and the networking.” DiSCOattracted a record number of registra-tions, up 20% on last year. In typicallyprovocative form, Cotterill told DiSCOattendees that “much of what you’llsee in digital signage is a waste of time”and pointed the finger at products apparently designed by engineers.

The day had concluded with twocontrasting presentations – one look-ing at digital signage in possibly theworld’s best known retailer, while thesecond looked at how the needs ofsmall/medium enterprises could bestbe addressed.

Andrew McCall’s company ROITeam had been asked by Harrods toanalyse whether the store’s investmentin high quality digital signage contentwas delivering a return in terms of changing shopper behaviour. McCall described how three types of

communication had been used – cog-nitive, using the written word; emo-tional, using only moving images; anda combination featuring the two – andshopper reaction analysed over thecourse of 437 interviews. The analysisrevealed conclusively that those shop-pers who had been exposed to com-munications with the strong emotionalcontent of which digital signage isuniquely capable expected to spendmore in the store because they felt better about the shopping experience.

The last presentation of the daywas delivered by Daniel Urruchua of :tmtfactory. In response to the significant role played by small andmedium businesses in driving theworld’s economy, and thus its poten-tial as a market, his company has cre-ated a simple, all-in-one package thatmakes it easy for them to take advan-tage of digital signage, at a cost fromonly 110 per month. “The impor-tant thing is to bundle technology, configuration and content all into asingle package,” he said.

The demand for managed/hosted video-conferencing services is likely to increasesubstantially over the next few years, according to Edward Cook, CEO of AVM(Audio Visual Machines).

Cook was speaking during the first dayof the Wainhouse Research-organised Visual Communications Summit, which wasbrought to ISE for the first time this year.

Several factors are helping to boost theadoption of videoconferencing technology, not least increased user confidence. “It hasbecome easier for the end-user in thesame way that IT has,” he observed.

But as videoconferencing steers ever-more firmly in the direction of desktop-basedapplications, there will be a parallel increasein the demand for service management.

Disparate systems and interoperabilityissues are among the factors likely to encourage end-user companies to adoptmanaged/hosted services.

Stepping in for Polycom’s Stefan Karapektkov, Wainhouse Research co-founder Andrew Davis addressed the subjectof voice and visual collaboration services.

Many of the existing services are beingdeveloped primarily for data. Accordingly“there needs to be a lot of work done onboth sides: [from] cloud service[providers] and voice/video vendors,” concluded Davis.

Brähler’s CMic delegate unit, whichis part of its DigiMic conferencing system, won a prestigious iF productdesign award for 2011 in the audioand video category. Given special attention by Brähler at ISE, the CMicis claimed to be the smallest suchproduct on the market.

“We believe that microphoneconsoles and delegates’ unitsshould be as inconspicuous andeasy to manage as possible,” ex-plained the product’s designer andBrähler head of marketing andproduct management, Axel Hep-pener. “Right from the start, ourfocus in developing the CMic wason achieving these two goals.

“It has a modern design in keep-ing with boardrooms where design

Why is ISE important to KNX?ISE is one of the most importanttrade fairs on the KNX calendar, andthis year no fewer than 26 KNXmembers will be exhibiting at theshow. This is undoubtedly a goodsign for the market. We think that notonly integrators and installers butalso end users will find the new developments very attractive becauseKNX is now capable of fully integratingthe entire living environment includinghome automation, multimedia andIT. As such, our hope for ISE is that itwill help us increase the demand forKNX technology.

What do you believe is importantthat ISE visitors find out about KNX?ISE is well known for its focus onaudio and video – but there’s also animportant role being played by otherapplications such as lighting, shutters, alarm, security, ventilation, heating, cooling, air conditioning and watersystems. With KNX and the new applications, a user can both see thestatus of, and control, every applicationwhether he or she is inside or outsidethe building using portable deviceslike the iPhone. It will even enable theuser to monitor meters and manageenergy consumption. That’s all downto the multifunctional KNX interface. Stand: 9F129

difficult problem.” It was a prefaceto the observation that ISE’s visi-tors and the organisation itselfwere setting increasingly high ex-pectations from each successiveevent. People were coming from allover the world and “we need to sat-isfy them,” he said.

Key statistics from his address in-cluded: 715 exhibitors (12% in-crease on 2010); 330 press (+22%)and 26,650sqm of net floor space(that is, not including aisles), up17%. Blackman also highlighted theincreasing sophistication of thestands themselves, some of whichare double-deckers this year.

The ISE event is not just growing,it attracted 150 new exhibitors, many from China and elsewhere inAsia. The exhibitors are drawn from38 different countries.

From Sanyo at this year’s ISE is thenew PLC-HF15000L, equippedwith a four-lamp hot swap system, producing 15,000 ANSI lumens.

Colour reproduction uses afourth LCD panel to separately con-trol yellow light within the opticalengine, which expands the numberof projected colours by 20% and, says the company, results inincreased colour purity. Native 2Kresolution ensures accurate projec-tion of detailed images, while inor-ganic LCD panels produce intenseblacks of a high contrast ratio.

Constant Light Output Controland an integrated Edge-Blending-function ensure an eye-catching360 panoramic projection, with14,300 x 1,080 pixels currentlybeing thrown onto more than120m2 live on the Sanyo stand.

The new PDG-DWL2500extreme short throw projector, meanwhile, is principally designedto be wall mounted above an inter-active whiteboard, though is equallysuited to desktop or floor projection, providing large crisp images fromextreme short throw distances. Itprovides 2,500 ANSI, native WXGAresolution, although can beswitched to a 4:3 aspect.

Connectivity options includeHDMI, two VGA terminals (oneswitchable for monitor re-drive) aswell as composite and s-video. New interactivevoting systemIML/Fleetwood Group

Fleetwood Group and IML Ltd have allied to develop a new audience response system which isavailable now and viewable on theFleetwood stand.

The IML Click interactive key -pad works together with a Power-Point add-in, IML ViewPointExpress, to extend the functionalityof PowerPoint and enable a presen-ter to include interactive questions aspart of a presentation. Audiencemembers can then respond via theIML Click keypads.

Richard Taylor, CEO of IMLworldwide, said: “We’ve designedthis system with affordability andsimplicity of use in mind. The soft-ware is available in a number of lan-guages and entirely free to downloadacross the globe. Anyone who cancreate a few PowerPoint slidesshould be able to use our system.”

“One of the most challenging aspects of making any audience response system work reliably is that everything hinges on the speed

and responsive-ness of the wireless link,” ex-plained Pat Moody,VP of sales & marketingfor the Electronics Divi-sion of Fleetwood.

“This link has to main-tain its integrity even inhostile RF-dense operatingenvironments where the systemwill have to cohabit with other active2.4GHz sources of potential interfer-ence within a venue, such as Wi-Fiand Bluetooth.

“There is simply no room forerror in a professional voting sit -uation where every entry absolutelymust be counted,” continuedMoody. “That’s why we use our spe-cialty RF protocols to establish theprivate network between the key-pads and base station. These com-munications methods are robustand proven to work reliably timeafter time.”Stand: 10M148

3D videowallHyundai IT

Hyundai IT is demonstrating its fullline-up of display solutions at ISE,including what the company de-scribes as the world’s first 3D video -wall. With a diagonal of 138in, itcomprises nine (3x3) stereoscopic3D displays (Hyundai’s newS468FL) and features almost seam-less bezels giving an inter-screen gapof only 7.3mm. The 3D effect isachieved using po-larised filters onboth the displays aswell as on the pas-sive 3D glasses. Thecompany says thatthe integrated 3D-Formatter makes itpossible to displaycommon 3D videoformats without anyfurther accessories.

For operationsin outdoor areas,Hyundai is presenting for the first time an outdoor display with adiagonal of 70in. The companysays that its housing (that meets the requirement of IP55 to 65), its intelligent cooling and heatingsystem and its special LCD panels(which can operate in temperaturesup to 105°C, making it less sus -ceptible to the ‘blackouts’ that can occur through overheating)make it appropriate for any climate and weather conditions.

Optional features include panelswith LED backlight, auto-bright-ness sensors and touch-screenfunctionality as well as UV andanti-graffiti protection.

Also on show on the Hyundaistand are public displays which areequipped with integrated motion-and auto-brightness sensors. If no motion is detected, the display

automatically switches to standbymode. The auto-brightness sensorcontinuously measures the ambi-ent brightness and adjusts thepanel’s brightness accordingly.Transflective panels use the ambi-ent light in order to increase thepanel’s brightness. With almost40% less power consumption com-pared to ‘regular’ displays, thesenew panels are said by Hyundai tobe much more eco-friendly.Stand: 11I58

MMD

MMD, the marketer and reseller for Philips-branded LCD monitorsand public signage displays, hasannounced its new 3D digital signage display.

The BDL5231V-3D is said to fea-ture an out-of-screen performance, whereby objects virtually fly in frontof the screen, immediately grabbingthe attention of the viewer and with-out the need to wear special glasses.

Based on Philips WOWvx3Dtechnology, the 52in BDL5231V-3Dis designed to help marketing pro-

fessionals create a stunningviewing experience. MMD’s3D displays allow multipleusers to view 3D content atthe same time, providing asustainable 3D viewingexperience.

The BDL5231V-3D uses anew lens design fromDimenco, based on slantedmulti-view lenticular lenstechnology, which delivers aclear 3D image and creates aviewing cone of 150°. In com-

bination with the Dimenco renderingcore, the display offers 28 views withsmooth cone transitions and enablesthe user to adapt the optimal viewingdistance, depth value and offset value.

“The co-operation betweenDimenco and MMD has resulted inthe best available 3D display in themarket,” said Maarten Tobias, CEOof Dimenco. “3D will become one ofthe most important differentiatorsin the signage market, where qual-ity is key.” Stand: 12C80

3D Theatre

“We have already seensome very interesting

developments in the world of 3D.This exciting technology won’t belimited just to the world of enter-tainment. 3D has much more tooffer than ‘just’ to entertain. I amthinking of the already existing 3Dprinter, which will definitely help tospeed up the R&D of various sectors.” Natividad García, chairwoman, Dinitel

“3D has really come to stay this time. It has been an inter-esting technology for the last two to three decades butthis time round it is backed up by a full infrastructureof acquiring media, editing and producing content, playback solutions and 3D-ready displays of all kinds.

“Still, one of the main issues is the lack of standardisation when it comes to sync methods, fileformats, etc. The first success is obviously in single-screen applications, as is already happening in cinemas, followed by home cinema, television andcomputer gaming.

“The requirements for large-event, multiscreenshows are somewhat more challenging. I believe 3Dstereoscopic will mainly be used as a ‘feature’ or ‘special effect’ in certain parts of the show – at least, until production and playback methods become morestreamlined. While 3D’s main breakthrough for thevast majority is in its entertainment value, the technol-ogy is already showing its enormous potential in othersectors, such as training and education, engineering, medical and military applications.” Fredrik Svahnberg, marketing director, Dataton

Vox Pop We ask: Will 3D see the most success in the worldof entertainment, or in other areas?

With the growing prevalence ofvideo-on-demand services in thehome, there is considerable focuson how users will interact withmedia via screens in the future. Some combination of qwerty key-board with the traditional remotecontrol is one route, but the intro-

GestureTek has been at the fore-

It was allegedly the Duchess ofWindsor, the wife of Eng-land’s King Edward VIII, whoremarked that a woman could

never be too rich or thin. A compa-rable maxim in the display indus-try might be that you can neverhave too may pixels. But, realisti-cally, do we now have as muchscreen resolution as we need? Theanswer, inevitably, is: ‘yes and no’.

“The vast majority of projectorsare still used in pretty basic ways,”says Mike Fisher of Futuresource.“If you bear in mind that 85% ofthe commercial EMEA market forprojectors is still SVGA or XGA, ithelps to put resolution in perspec-tive. While there is certainly anincreasing trend towards higherdefinition formats, 1080p andWUXGA resolutions only accountfor less than 1% of sales.”

The average PowerPoint presen-tation doesn’t benefit from HDresolution. As long as low resolu-tion projectors are significantly lessexpensive than their more capablecounterparts, it seems likely thatXGA and SVGA will continue to bethe mainstays of the industry.

But in PowerPoint presenta-tions, image detail is rarely anissue. For sophisticated applica-tions such as medical imaging orCAD, however, it certainly is. Here,as Bob Raikes of Meko points out,the resolution needed is a functionof viewing distance and screensize: that’s why many claimed that4K (4,096 x 2,160) resolution, not2K (2,048 x 1,080), was the onlyappropriate technology for digitalcinema. Conversely, at smallscreen sizes, it can be difficult totell the difference between 1080and 720 resolution.

“In the short term, higher reso-lution means getting rid of alltraces of pixellation,” notes

Richard Cobbold, chairman ofThe Screen. “In the medium term,as we see more larger format dis-plays all around us, the issue willkeep coming back. 1,920 x 1,080 isgreat for a 20in desktop monitor -but pretty low if you are workingclose up on an 80in display.”

Certainly, elimination ofthe‘screen door’ effect that plaguedfirst generations of VGA resolutionprojectors has been a driver inhome theatre projectors and dis-plays, where a ‘film-like’ appear-ance was the holy grail – and asvideo plays an increasingly impor-tant role in commercial AV applica-

tions, it is no less applicable there. Inevitably, 3D comes into this

story too. For some 3D implemen-tations, the requirement is that halfthe pixels address the right eye,the other half the left eye. With a1,920 x 1,080 screen, this meansthat the resulting image is, ineffect, only half a full HD image. For full HD in 3D, screen resolu-tions of 3,840 x 2,160 will berequired. Screens of that resolu-tion are already shipping.

“It is a paradox,” says Paul Gray, director of TV market research atDisplaySearch, “that desktop moni-tors are getting larger, yet resolu-

tions are not increasing. However, with notebooks increasinglyreplacing desktops, screen sizes also reaching a plateau forproductivity tasks.”

Inevitably, Apple’s retina displayis capturing many imaginations asan exemplar of what displays couldlook like in the future – althoughquestions about its scalabilityremain. For the time being, it seemswe have all the resolution weneed – but that’s not to say thatthe industry won’t provide us withmore: not necessarily becausewe need it, but because theindustry can.

Resolution or evolution?

If effective resolution is a function of viewing distance and screen size, what are the applications for higher resolution displays?

How much resolution you really need partly depends on your application, in addition to other factors

Ian McMurray asks leading industryobservers how much morescreen resolution we really need – and why

A new range of Assist touch-screenaccessories for Mitsubishi Electric’sprofessional flat panel displays isbeing introduced at ISE 2011. Thenew interfaces add touch-screen func-tionality to the firm’s existing LCDs,allowing them to be used in interac-tive, high-usage applications such asdigital signage, retail displays, educa-tion and meeting room facilities.

The Assist Touch system consistsof a bezel frame supporting a hard-ened glass screen, which is designedto fit over the LCD front panel. Thesystem acts as an optical interface, while providing what the companydescribes as tough and durable pro-tection for the display. The system isavailable for Mitsubishi’s 42in, 52inand 65in displays and is said to becompatible with all major touch-

screen software packages. Thetouch-screen offers 32,767x32,767resolution with a 10-millisecondresponse time, and can be operatedequally well by finger or stylus.

Mitsubishi Electric’s MDT pro-fessional LCD range has been spe-cially designed for demandingenvironments such as retail, publicdisplay and education.

Presented in a slim-bezel for-mat, MDT displays incorporatetwin light sensors, front and rear, toensure screens are always operatingat the optimum brightness levels forthe environment. Fusion, the new digital signage soft-ware application from SpinetiX, isreceiving its first major public show-ing here at ISE. Designed to dramat-ically simplify the implementationof small-scale signage projects, it isinstalled on every SpinetiX HMPHyper Media Player.

Fusion allows content to bemanaged via a web browser inter-face and can therefore be accessedeither locally or remotely using a PC,Mac, Linux or iPad platform – orany combination of these. Onceconnection to the HMP has beenachieved, SpinetiX says that contentcan be uploaded, edited and pub-lished with minimal technical skilland in record time.

“While largerdigital signage oradvertising net-works are likely

to be run by network personnelwith a certain amount of specialistknowledge, small-scale and single-location rollouts are different,” saidSerge Konter, marketing manager,SpinetiX.

“Our objective with Fusion wasto embed a digital signage applica-tion that works instantly and allowssystem setup to be completed by theinstaller or the end user, regardlessof their technical expertise or skilllevel,” Konter added. “We estimatethat, in most situations, it will takeless than 30 minutes for an initialsetup to be completed under theFusion application.”

Because Fusion is installed onevery HMP and no additional soft-ware is required, there are no sub-

scription licence fees for usersto pay.

QuickStart for HP

In December, Google unveiledits first branded netbook.Driven by Chrome OS, it isthe embodiment of Google’s

vision of a future in which every-thing exists in the Cloud. Expectedto be commercially launched inthe middle of this year, it has onceagain focused attention on whereapplications and data will residein the future.

Cloud-based computing is atthe heart of SaaS – Software as aService – which has found signifi-cant favour in the digital signagemarket. “Today, SaaS probably hasa market share of around 40% –but we expect that it will rapidlyreach 90%,” says Oliver Schwedeof Invidis Consulting, which isISE’s digital signage partner and isresponsible for the organisation ofDiSCO, the Digital Signage Con-ference at ISE.

That’s remarkable growth byany standards – but then, SaaS is acompelling proposition because itticks so many boxes. Increasingly,

businesses are focusing on theircore competencies – and, typically, running a digital signage networkis not one of those. With SaaS, initial outlay is minimal – andthat’s attractive to financial direc-tors looking to minimise capitalexpenditure.

“We expect the concept of theon-premises licence will disappearand will be replaced by monthlypayments that are based onusage,” continues Schwede, whoalso speaks for trade associationOVAB Europe, which is jointlybehind the DiSCO conference.

“What most customers want isminimal capital expenditure and aclear understanding of total cost ofownership. Even though SaaS willtypically mean a higher total costof ownership, that disadvantage ismore than offset for them by theadvantage of lower capital expen-diture,” Schwede adds.

SaaS also resonates with thegrowing desire to be able to accessanything from anywhere – whichmeans that web-based paradigmsare enormously attractive. Andwhile digital signage may appearto have become mainstream, thereare still potential users who areuncertain about the future.

“It will continue to be impor-tant for suppliers to dynamicallyadapt their infrastructure andgives their customers the ability toexpand or shrink networksdynamically,” notes Schwede.

Beyond that, there is the peaceof mind that comes to IT depart-

ments who do not have yetanother system that requires to bemaintained, patched, updated andsupported.

But if SaaS is such a com-pelling proposition for digital signage users, why is it not yet universally implemented? The keyreason given by industry commentators is concern aboutsecurity and loss of control: manymajor organisations feel uncom-fortable in principle with the ideaof third-party storage of data andmanagement of services.

Some also note that, as digitalsignage becomes more event-dri-ven by local triggers – consumerinteraction – it will be hard todeliver an appropriately engagingexperience from the Cloud.

Beyond this: as users becomemore confident, and digital sig-nage becomes not ‘me too’ but adifferentiator, potentially withmission critical characteristics, will they want to take more con-trol – implying that managementof the digital signage systemmoves in-house?

Given the momentum behindit, it is hard to disagree withSchwede in his forecast that SaaSwill become pervasive in digitalsignage.

However, it seems likely thatthe SaaS model will continue toevolve in line with users’ increasing sophistication andexpectations – not to mentionthe growing capability of the technology.

Vox PopWe ask: What do you identify as the most significant factors inthe growth of ISE as an event?

We ask: Which market sectors within the overall EMEA integrated systems market are the strongest performers at the moment – and why is that?

“The complex-ity of today’ssystems andthe speed atwhich they’reevolving isforcing industry professionals toinvest more time in self-education.Be it through product knowledgeshared informally on the exhibitfloor, or the certification programsformally offered, ISE is a premierevent for helping professionals tostay up to date.

“The rise of superior digitalvideo from the new H.264 standardand the introduction of the ISE’sDigital Signage Zone haveattracted record numbers of AVintegrators, who realize that therapid advancement of these tech-nologies can help them becomemore efficient, reduce costs, andmaximise revenue.”Joe Gaucher, CTO andexecutive vice president, Haivision Network Video

I’d say the twostrongest con-tenders aredigital signageand digitalscenographyfor multiple screens in publicand cultural installations. Theintroduction of low-cost softwaremedia servers, based on stan-dard PCs, IP networks and dis-play technologies, has helpedreduce the technical obstacles, and increased the productionopportunities for creative, unusual and eye-catching newdisplay set-ups - at an affordablebudget.

Adopting digital media trends, and utilising the rapid technologyadvances in standard computersand portable touch-tablets for pro-fessional applications, has com-pletely revolutionised thepossibilities for interactive andpreprogrammed multi-displayexperiences. There is muchgreater awareness among clientsabout the commercial and enter-tainment potential of digital sig-nage and scenography, and thatalso drives this sector forward. Lifebelt for wireless mics Sennheiser

Advance frequency planning forwireless systems can only go so far:at festivals and shows with manydifferent artists, and events attractingmajor media interest, it is very com-mon for another star to be includedat the last minute, or an OB team tostart broadcasting on a microphonefrequency that has not been regis-tered with the event organiser.

Broadcasters, sound engineersand RF engineers can now access anew version of Sennheiser’s Wire-less Systems Manager (WSM). Theupgraded version of the controlsoftware for Sennheiser radio micro-phone and monitoring systemsincludes a ‘professional set-up’function.

Among its most important fea-tures, the Manager automaticallycalculates the interference-free fre-quency set for the required numberof radio channels, while a lifebelticon is used to keep a number ofback-up frequencies in reserve in

case there are any RF problems onthe day. A spare microphone canthen easily be synchronised with thereprogrammed receiver.

“We hope that, in this way, wecan make events a bit less stressfulfor sound engineers,” explainedSven Boetcher, Sennheiser productmanager for professional wirelessmicrophones.

The new, upgraded version ofthe control software for Sennheiserradio microphone and monitoringsystems includes a professional set-up function.

“This makes the WSM an indis-pensable aid for sound engineersand RF engineers,” said Boetcher. The user simply enters the requirednumber of channels, includingback-up channels. Then the WSMscans the radio environment andmakes suggestions as to where themicrophone and monitoring chan-nels can best be placed. Stand: 2A58

Vox PopWe ask: What are the drivers and inhibitors when itcomes to the adoption of IP as an integration tool?

“More andmore AV systems arenow connectedto the internet. One driver isthat so much content is now available online (music, movies, even live events and program-ming), making the internet an inte-gral source of media.

“The wide variety of sourcecomponent options and potentialcomplexity of integrating a strongIP-content experience into AV systems has brought a new revenue stream to professionalinstallers. Furthermore, IP provides a tremendous amountof benefits to a professionalinstaller in system maintenance, monitoring, and management.

“Many IP technologies allowintegrators to remotely troubleshoot and solve customer’sissues, saving time and money forboth parties. I suspect thatinstallers who are not yet utilisingIP technologies will be doing so inthe next two to three years.“John Benz, marketing manager, Furman(Panamax/Furman is exhibitingwith SpeakerCraft)

“There is noquestion thatthe industrywill have toadopt IP as anintegrationtool. The maindriver in an IP-based world is

that standards-based technologydramatically reduces the cost of ownership.

“Customer expectations arealready set in the corporate andresidential markets. End usersalready have high expectations, asthey can manage a plethora of IP-based devices in their own home.In the corporate market, IP provides advantages which havebeen available to the IT industry forsome time now, where serversand other devices are managedglobally, with significant cost savings being made.

The same can now be done bycompanies like AMX who manageAV devices, rooms and entirebuildings around the globe andcan report back on their status and functionality.

“The main inhibitor to the wideradoption of IP is that the skill-setrequired is not always available insome parts of the professional AVindustry. For more technically orientated integrators alreadyinvolved in VC and collaborativetechnologies, IP is already a way oflife, but for many others they needto train their people quickly. Wealready see customers requestingspecific skill-sets from integratorsand partners in tenders and project selection. In a world of AVand IT convergence, you need totrust that your people can talk inthe same language, no matterwhich discipline they come from. Kevin Morrison, managing director, AMX Europe

“The TCP/IP protocol is the globallanguage of information and communication technology. This is,for the first time, a common plat-form on which the integrationbusiness may integrate thedevices of different manufacturers.

“”The system integrators andtheir customers simultaneouslyalso gain access to a multitude ofcost-effective devices such as i-devices, smartphones, touchPCs, WebPads etc, that can beutilised for control tasks.

“But these new technologiesalso demand that the system integrators gain new knowledge inthe field of IT. If you intend to control devices worldwide, youshould also know how the webworks. In the residential business, this is not yet the case.

“Another impediment is thelimitations the existing IT networksare imposing on transmissionbandwidths. And many IT admin-istrators will baulk at making theirnetwork available for the transmission of voice and pictures. The collapse of many networkswould be inevitable.

“Forcing high quality signalsonto an IT network to then possiblyhave them compressed in transmission and their qualityreduced is also technically questionable.

“Therefore: TCP/IP as a communication means yes; transmission medium no.”Rainer Dubiel, product manager and authorised representative,TLS

Vox PopWe ask: What are the drivers and inhibitors when it comes tothe adoption of IP as an integration tool?

“With moreand moredevices incorporatingInternet connectivity tomeet the demand for streamingcontent, using IP for control andintegration simply makes sensefor manufacturers.

“The only inhibitor we see isthe lack of a standardised, specificeducation regimen that coverswhat integrators need to know in aquick, concise manner, without theconfusing techno-babble associ-ated with most traditional trainingcourses.”Steven Cheung, president, VidaBox

“With manyproducts offer-ing an IP link, the carrot ofeasy installa-tion and themisconceptionthat all theequipmentwill workseamlessly together often disappoints, particularly whenmixing equipment from multiplemanufacturers.

“Many IP interfaces simplymimic the units normal controlfunctions so the IP link becomesjust another method of connection.Above all installers are looking fora simple life anddon’t want tospend long peri-

ods setting up IP addresses, wor-rying about network security and, after all that, being disappointed bythe level of control available.

“If, along with the IP connectiv-ity, manufacturers would include abasic plug-and-play web browserinterface with built-in security to atleast get the system up and run-ning, and augment this by includ-ing software modules that can beeasily incorporated into a controlprogram, this would make theinstallers life easier and thereforemore likely to adopt this approach.Good diagnostic tools are also amust.”David G Tyas, managing director, Ikon AVS andNebulaAudio

“The driversare still unifiedtechnology, cabling andintegration. It isso much eas-ier to keep systems running ifbase technology is the same andsolutions can be easily integratedat high level.

“Cost is probably still the maininhibitor. IP systems are oftenmore costly than ‘legacy’, espe-cially if you do not consider TCO(total cost of ownership) andwiring costs. Installers oftenargue that the cabling cost is notpart of the budget, or they make alot of money on this, so they arenot very eager to use systems thatminimise cabling infrastructure.”Johannes G Rietschel, CEO and Founder, Barix

One of the problems that hasbedevilled mapmakers for millen-nia are the compromises they haveto make to portray an imperfectlyspherical object, the Earth, using atwo dimensional system, a map.

The Mercator projection, thePeters projection... all of them areguilty of some crime against geogra-phy as you can either get the shapeof the countries or their sizes right, not both at the same time.

The MIMO88 8x8 digital audiomatrix is the latest member of theflexible EclerNet family: a series ofdigital audio devices which can beconfigured and controlled from alocal network computer or evenover a remote DSL connection.

The new unit is described as fullyprogrammable and linkable to asecond unit to become a 16x16matrix, with ‘real routing from anyinput to any output’.

It can be configured and man-aged via Ethernet with the includedEclerNet Manager software, whichalso offers many other controloptions including Windows-basednetworked clients (a graphical, cus-tom-made screen for each user), TP-NET third-party control protocol forthe integration with external controlhardware like Crestron, AMX,Extron, Vity, STI, Medialon, Ecler’sWPTouch wall panels and so on.

The included EclerNet Manager

software lets the installer create aproject in offline mode, includingall the required networked devices(MIMO88 matrixes, NZA ampli-fiers, NPA amplifiers) and configurethem according to the installationneeds.

Once in the field, the auto-dis-covery and device finder functionsare designed to make the installa-tion power up simple, using thegraphical drag-and-drop method tolink each hardware piece with its vir-tual equivalent, says the developer.

After this, a f inal touch-up(equalisation, dynamics, delay andother parameters) is all that’srequired for the installation to beready for daily operation. “ISE has grownprogressivelyover the pastfew years andis now a critical part ofthe AV eventcalendar in Europe. The growth ofthe Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH)space has been one of the mostsignificant growth factors in the AVmarket in the last couple of years.ISE as a whole is reflecting thistrend, with a growing number ofexhibitors demonstrating solutionsas opposed to point products.

“Harris uses ISE as an opportu-nity not only to show the latestproducts and technologies in thisspace, but more importantly tomeet customers and partners. Theshow gives Harris and other ven-dors a solid platform to demon-strate how we can contribute to thegrowth of the DOOH and digitalsignage business.

“The growth of ISE is also sup-ported by the new DiSCO confer-ence, which is being held at theheart of ISE where key industrydevelopments are discussed. Weare pleased to be a Platinumsponsor of that event and to sup-port the ongoing education of themarket. All of this means that ISEis becoming a leading event inEurope for the DOOH business.”Ian Collis, director of marketing, Harris BroadcastCommunications, Europe

“ISE has really developed nicely asthe number one CE trade show fordealers and manufacturers in theEMEA region for a number of reasons. For one it offers a key

location, and itis wellequipped tohost an eventof this size, interms ofhotels, dining, logistics, andtransportation. It is also properly promoted andwell organised, and receives coop-eration and support from two lead-ing industry organisations.

“Blending together the residen-tial and commercial marketsunder one roof, the result is awell-attended show with greatrepresentation from all over theEMEA region. For exhibiting ven-dors, this presents a formidableopportunity to engage with dealersand distribution partners through-out the region.” Pete Baker, vice presidentsales and marketing, RTI

“Its continuedresponse toongoing industrydevelopment;the ISE organis-ers keep up withindustry trendsand responds tocustomer needsswiftly. Forexample, the organisers observedthe rapid growth in digital signage, and created the digital signagepavilion last year to promote inno-vations in this industry. At ISE2011, the pavilion has expanded totwo halls, proving the organisersprecise insights into AV industrydevelopment.”Ravel Chi, vice president, Cayin Technology Co

Wouldn’t it be great if reporters inthe field could upload their contentdirectly to the broadcast station, without using any cables or com-puters? Well, it’s now possible, saysArbor Media.

With a special add-on module, reporters can now use their smart-phone to record news and instantlytransfer the AV material via the cen-tral NewsGate system to the stationscontent archive.

The reporter in the field shoots apicture or records an audio/videoitem. They open the special News-

Sightline-friendlystage monitorNexo

ISE 2011 sees Nexo debuting thefirst production models of its new45 N-12 monitor loudspeaker, which introduces a new concept instage sound – line monitoring. Withits super low profile, the new wedgeis designed to appeal to those withconcerns about sightlines andcamera angles for stage and screenproductions.

François Deffarges, Nexo’s tech-nical director, commented: “This isactually the first purpose-designedwedge that Nexo has ever made. Webelieve our design philosophy ofline control will offer real benefits toengineers, performersand audiences.”

The 45 N-12 draws on Nexo’spatented Hyperbolic ReflectiveWavesource, which is used through-out the GEO range of high-perfor-mance loudspeakers.

The design works by wavesourc-ing, creating virtual acoustic sourcesbehind the enclosure itself andbelow the stage, using reflectionrather than coercion to determinethe shape of the wavefront.

Unlike a conventional high fre-quency waveguide in which the exitis rectangular, the Nexo monitor’swaveguide forms a ‘smile’, enablingcabinets to be linked together toform arrays without interferencebetween wavefronts.

According to Nexo, monitorengineers will find thatthe N-12 design pro-duces a ‘very sharplydefined dispersion pat-tern’ while simultane-ously offering a ‘hugeimprovement in terms oflevel before feedback’.

Other featuresinclude a magnetic lock-

ing system joining multi-ple monitors together,

allowing scalability for bothcoverage and SPL level, as well

as a non-slip base with a skidsystem and ergonomic handle.

DesignScreenHD

Screen hides itself awayISE 2010 was, it seems, a veryworthwhile event for Design-ScreenHD so worthwhile that thecompany is back again for ISE 2011,but with a stand four times as largeas last year’s.

A young company, Design-ScreenHD came to ISE in 2010 tobegin the expansion of its businessoutside France – and as a result ofbeing at the show, signed a distribu-tor in Germany and made excellentcontacts in other countries.

Once again, DesignScreenHD isfocusing on the screen that the com-pany describes as unique and revo-lutionary. Responding to therequirement that a screen shouldnot be visible when not in use – butthat cabling and ceiling casing canbe obtrusive and unsightly – the

company’s screens feature what itcalls a triptych mechanism.

Said to be the only screens avail-able that are fully tensioned on afixed frame, they fold, using apatented mecha-nism the companysays must be seento be truly appreci-ated, into a third oftheir extended size.

The screenbecomes, in effect, completely con-cealed behind apicture framewhich the user fillswith an image tocomplement theroom’s décor. Stand: 5Q120

Inconspic-uous place-ment andclear, consistentvoice pick-ups areamong the claims madefor the BP893, whose low-profile design and ease of useare said to make it ideal foruse in theatrical perform-ances, houses of worshipand broadcast studios.

The microphoneincludes a 1.4m, perma-nently attached miniature cable. Itsfree end connects to the providedAT8539 power module via a lockingfour-pin connector. The connector isalso compatible with all A-T UniPakbody-pack transmitters. The output

of the power module is a three-pinXLRM-type connector.

The microphone requires 11V-52V phantom power. A recessed

switch in thepower modulepermits thechoice of flatresponse orlow-frequencyroll-off via theintegral 80Hzhigh-pass Uni-Steep filter, to

help control undesired ambientnoise. It comes equipped with apower module, a cable clip, twowindscreens, two element covers, amoisture guard, a belt clip and aprotective carrying case. The micro-phone is available in either black ortheatre beige.

Sub ticks WAF box‘WAF’ is an acronym known tomany in the home audiovisualworld. The ‘Wife Acceptance Factor’means that AV equipment mustcomplement a room’s décor – or beinvisible. Similar aesthetic concernsare, of course, often found in com-mercial environments.

That’s the thinking behind theAmbienTone Sub 1 from in-akustik.Its new in-wall subwoofer isdesigned to complement the com-pany’s AmbienTone flat panel loud-speakers. The Sub 1 is drywall-fittedin a modified piece of gypsum plas-terboard and can be plastered, painted and even wall-papered over.

According to the company, thespecial design of the Sub 1 means

that it delivers very low structure-borne sound, meaning minimumwall vibration and noise transmis-sion to neighbouring rooms. It fea-tures an inconspicuous 10mm slitabove the skirting board or belowthe ceiling as its sound outlet.Stand: 5O88

Connected TV worldCentre of attention on the Loewestand is the company’s range ofConnect televisions. Available in32in and 40in screen sizes, they fea-ture edge LED backlighting toimprove image quality while reduc-ing power consumption.

The Loewe MediaPortal bringsthe TVs’ multimedia functionalityinto one place, with the MediaNetfunction allowing the easy integra-tion of online content into thehome entertainment system.

A built-in LAN interface allowsaccess to content from the homenetwork via MediaHome, and aUSB port gives further media stor-age connectivity capability. The TVs

also feature three HDMI ports andtwo CI+ interfaces.

The DR+ streaming function is afurther highlight. This allows pro-grammes recorded with the DR+hard disk recorder to be viewed eas-ily on other Loewe televisions withthe new SL Chassis.

Streaming is carried out via LAN,WLAN or Powerline via the mainselectricity as desired. It means that arecording on the Connect LED’sintegrated DR+ hard disk in the liv-ing room can be played on a Loeweset elsewhere in the house.

Both TVs are equipped with inte-grated Dolby Digital Plus, AC3 andDTS. Stand: 5N114

Despite the sceptics and doom-sayers, it seems consumers aretaking to 3D TV faster than they did to HD when it launched

“Adoptionis runningat a fasterrate thanHD in itsfirst year”

Although TV commercialshave so far tended toemphasise the elementof spectacle in the early

stages of this new 3D era, therelooks to be more to 3D’s secondcoming than what you might call‘Avatar, Pixar and sport’.

Away from the cinema aisles –where this new technology isalready as much a part of the fur-niture as popcorn and overpriceddrinks – there have been somelegitimate expressions of concernabout the long-term outlook for3D in the home. Will consumersreally be willing to invest in 3D-compatible systems when somany have shelled out so recentlyfor HD TVs? Might they not bemore inclined to prioritise sur-round sound – or simply wait forthe lay of the land to become a lit-tle clearer?

While a recent UK poll con-ducted by YouGov for Deloittefound that only 89 of 4,199respondents were likely to spendmoney on a 3D-enabled TV setover the coming year, the majorityof forecasts suggest that residential3D is now poised for dramaticgrowth. Releasing its predictionsjust weeks after the first 3D TVwas introduced into the UK,Kelkoo revealed that 40,000 3DTVs were expected to be sold inthe country in 2010, and sug-gested that the UK 3D TV marketcould be worth €7.25bn by 2015.

Data furnished to The ISEDaily by research organisationFuturesource Consulting in late2010 further confirms the gener-ally rosy outlook. In WesternEurope, 1.1m 3D TVs were

expected to be sold last year, risingto more than 3m in 2011. Overthe long-term, the 2% householdpenetration due to be reached bythe end of this year may risetowards 40% by 2015.

Falling 3D TV receiver pricesundoubtedly constitute a signifi-cant factor. According to Future-source, overall prices havedropped by nearly 35-40% inmany major markets and arealready running at lower thanexpected levels.

“The industry continues with astrong commitment to promoting3D TV sales, and in most [WesternEuropean] markets set adoption isrunning at a faster rate than forhigh-definition during its first year,”says Jim Bottoms, director & co-founder, Futuresource Consulting.

There are, however, somenotable caveats regarding theavailability of sufficient content, with Bottoms observing that thenumber of 3D Blu-ray titlesreleased in 2010 constituted “acause of major disappointmentfor the industry as a whole”.Hardware/film “bundling partner-ships” may well have added toconsumer confusion.

Amongst the broadcasters, Skyin particular has led the way inrolling out 3D services, and thereis an expectation that more willfollow as ownership of hardwareincreases. But if it’s still relativelyearly days for 3D in the home,Bottoms recalls a Futuresourceevent that took place as recently asJune 2009 at which “many indus-try people were saying that 3D TVis still some years away. Look howfar we have come!”

Technomad

Weatherproof ampAudio specialist Technomad isintroducing its PowerChiton4weatherproof amplifier at this ISE.Capable of producing 1.6kW for 8-ohm systems and 1.8kW for 4-ohmsystems, the new PowerChiton4offers more than three times thepower of the current highest-powermodel (500W) in the same com-pact, NEMA-enclosed package aspreviously-available PowerChitonamplifier modules.

The PowerChiton, with its IP66protection classification, is a nearlybomb-proof, amplifier-in-a-shell,says the maker. The IP66 ratingconfirms ingress protection (IP) forpersons (electrical safety) andequipment (dust, dirt and waterpenetration). The latter makes Pow-erChiton amplifiers suitable for out-door installations for protectionagainst the elements.

The product retains all of theseprotection features while vastlyincreasing power, creating newopportunities for designers and inte-grators to specify and install Power-

Chiton amplifiers within distributedaudio systems. Its low-profile, mod-ular design also gives systems

designers and

integrators theflexibility to place the ampli-fiers closer to the loudspeaker, including wall and pole-mount sys-tems, or to install the modules onthe back of the loudspeaker withspecialised hardware.Stand: 2A57

“Users can move the item and seehow it would ‘look’ on them at various angles, colours or designs”

This could be the yearAugmented Reality (AR)goes mainstream. It’s afield variously estimated

at US$350m (ABI Research) to$732m (Juniper Research) by2014 with others bumping the figure up to $1bn. According to analysts Gartner, AR is one of thetop 10 current disruptive technologies – even though thetechnology has been aroundsince at least the 1970s.

In contrast to virtual reality(VR) which consists of a 100%graphical overlay and demandsconsiderable computing power tocreate rich and believable virtualworlds, AR uses as its baseline theexisting world and blends newinformation into it.

Its most familiar use has beenas a graphical analysis tool oversports replays or in virtual setsmixing live action with animatedgraphics in real time.

Thanks to the growing penetration of smartphone andmobile computing devices, AR isnow being seen as an interactivetechnology with which con-sumers and the developmentcommunity can get to grips.

Today AR is primarily used inretail, marketing or theme parksbut as technology advances it willbe deployed in markets fromentertainment and education toinformation services, surgery andindustrial maintenance.

The handful of developersinvolved in AR are clear that

there is a business out there toexploit. This might be in theform of virtually exploring andlearning about a new product, ora simulated experience, or evenpresenting digital assets in thephysical world to help navigate, inform and bring in new layersof information.

One of the best known con-sumer AR apps has been built byLayar. Given a location and usingthe iPhone's built-in compass,Layar superimposes a 'radarmap' – consisting of detailspulled from sources such asWikipedia, Flickr, Google, andYouTube – onto a picture you'vetaken of the scene.

Other systems employ soft-ware running on a standard PCwith a webcam which recogniseswhen a marker (a logo, barcode,or any item like a chair) is dis-played to the camera, tracks itand superimposes a 3D animated

model or CAD rendered imageon top of it.

Users can move the item andsee how it would ‘look’ on themat various angles, with differentcolours or designs. From jew-ellery and watches, this hasgrown to include all items thatcan be worn on the body.

At London Fashion Week2010, Carri Munden of malebrand Cassette Playa placed aug-mented reality barcodes amongher costumes, triggering 3D ani-mations as each of the modelsposed in front of a video camera. On screen the audience saw aseries of CG helmets, new faces, and flashes of shape and colouradorning the models’ bodies.

Markerless system have alsobeen developed in which the userjust needs to show a hand or theirface for software to recognise theshape and superimpose objects. The Holy Grail is to create a pho-torealistic image but that isdependent on computing power.

We’re not that far away frombeing able to wear a pair of sun-glasses containing a screen andwireless IP connection so thatgraphics could be overlaid on the real world as we walkaround. Contact lenses could act as a visual overlay or immer-sive displays may appear in 10 to 20 years.

AR is a technology on thecusp of moving from gimmick tomainstream utility and its poten-tial has barely been scratched.

Augmented Realitybecomes a mainstream technology

The list of Symetrix Jupiter processorapps is continuing to grow as thecompany brings out new ones tomeet the specialised needs of vari-ous types of user.

Users simply download a freeapp from the Symetrix websitethat meets their requirements, and the Jupiter hardware takescare of the rest.

Symetrix has organised itswebsite to help users quicklyidentify the app that fits their sit-uation. The apps maybe viewed by cate-gory – such as mix-ing and routing, public address anddistribution, soundreinforcement – aswell as by venue, such as home the-atres, classrooms and houses of wor-ship. They may also be viewed bythe input and output counts of thethree Jupiter hardware products:Jupiter 12 (12/4), Jupiter 4 (4/4), orJupiter 8 (8/8).

Trent Wagner, senior product

manager for Symetrix, commented:“Jupiter apps allow us to rapidlyadapt the platform to customers’needs by creating

The strong points of an IP signaltransmission system arise from thetransmission of contents that arerich in details, such as Excel charts, says US company Just Add Power, adding that most systems have diffi-culties in provid-ing an acceptableimage quality ona distant screen.

Entert h e e n -h a n c e dP ro N E TAdvanced solution from Just AddPower. ProNET is a HDMI/DVItransmission system that transmitsdigital signals, including Display-Port, over a standard IP network andtherefore over any distance. The sig-nals are transmitted with a resolu-tion of up to 1080p.

ProNET is able to route up to 20sources to up to 65,000 displays inpoint-to-point or multipoint-to-multipoint operation, according to

the developer. The signal distribu-tion is apparently affected over man-ageable standard network switchesthat are able to prioritise the AV datastreams, assuring a failure-free trans-mission.

Switching between the differentsources is carried out quickly andwithout black screen by intelligentHDCP management, says Just AddPower.

Vox PopWe ask: Which territories within the overall EMEA integratedsystems market are the strongest performers at the moment –and why is that?

“That’s alwaysa bit more of acomplicatedquestion toanswer than itsounds –especially ‘why’. Business is stillbeing done all over EMEA –athough it’s a lot less easy to fore-cast than a couple of years agoregarding which markets willgrow and which ones won’t.

“There is rarely a ‘pattern’ tofollow these days, as countriessales can be skewed very notice-ably if a couple of big contractscome through in a short space oftime. ‘Why’ a market does well orbadly in the CI business is alwaysfor many reasons; disposableincome, house construction meth-ods, lifestyle, traditions and tech-nology infrastructure all play apart. We still enjoy good businessin the UK, Benelux, Russia, theMiddle East, Scandinavia, Italy,Poland and Switzerland, butacross the board, our CI businessis up on last year.”Martin Harding, managing director, BMB Electronics

“Secondly we have seen anupturn in integration business. This is partly due to heavy invest-ment in new products at morecompetitive prices but still withclass-leading functionality andperformance – also due to signifi-cant investment in sales and mar-keting efforts, with a quadruplingof our tradeshow budget and theopening of a new sales office particularly for sales of Calibre-branded products throughout theEMEA and Asia.

Eight screensonyourdeskSMS

Any serious PC user will happily talkabout the advantages of having atwo-screen set-up: the ability to havea web page open for reference whilecomposing a Word document, forexample, or two Excel spread sheetsside by side for comparison. Reallyserious PC users – video editors, forexample – can always find a use forthree screens.

But there are power users forwhom even three screens aren’tenough – bankers, stock exchangeanalysts, control centre operatorsand so on - and for them, SMSSmart Media Solutions has intro-duced the Multi Control.

The Multi Control offers thefacility to mount up to eight screensin a gentle curve that takes up mini-mum desk space. Said to be easy toset up because of its simple andexact edge-to-edge mounting, it isalso claimed to make maintenanceequally straightforward with allremaining screens remaining opera-tional while one is serviced orreplaced. The Multi Point can bemounted on a ‘boomerang’ foot, ora clamp allows attachment to theedge or corner of a desk.

Solutions are available for two, three, four, six and eight screen con-figurations. Screens of 19in are saidto allow the maximum degree ofadjustment, although the bracketcan accommodate screens up to22in. Stand: 4Q40

Paradigm“We used to present a bric-a-brac of technology that engineers could dipinto but this year we are much more solutions and design orientated,”Paradigm founder Greg Jeffreys (below) told The ISE Daily yesterday. “Thereis nothing new about Pepper’s Ghost but we’ve done really well with them. It’s not rocket science but we’ve developed a technique for stretching thefoil, so that you can rig and de-rig it. Using back projection, we’ve achievedsuperb contrast, with a genuine back to the background. It gives a strong3D effect because the eye has no point of reference. We’re showing it thisyear with an interactive interface, which gives an idea of some of thepotential new applications.”Stand: 3A87
