The Goleta Valley Historical Society is commemorating the 1942 attack with a special exhibit at its History Education CenterDAILY SOUND / Victor Maccharoli

Sign recalls Japanesesubmarine attack

On February 23rd, 1942,two-and-a-half months afterthe, “date which will live ininfamy,” Richfield Oil Fieldnear Ellwood Mesa becamethe site of the first attack onthe continental United Statesby a foreign power since theWar of 1812 when a Japanesesubmarine shelled the beach.Seventy years later, the

Goleta Valley HistoricalSociety is commemoratingthe incident with a specialexhibit at its HistoryEducation Center, a series oflectures by historian and Ph.Dcandidate Ken Hough, and anew sign marking the site ofthe attack near Ellwood beachnext to what is now theBacara Resort.

“I get goosebumps talkingabout it because it’s some-thing that I’ve been looking atfor several years now,”Hough said at a dedicationceremony to the new sign.At 7 p.m. on the day of the

attack, as President FranklinRoosevelt gave what Houghdescribed as his “darkest”fireside chat, a Japanese sub-marine identified as the I-17surfaced offshore and beganshelling the mainland, firingapproximately 25 5-inchrounds and destroying riggingand pumping equipment at awell 1,000 yards inland. Afew shells overshot their tar-get and hit farmland furtherinland.“World War II suddenly

became a cold hard reality topeople living on the coast,”Hough said.

The I-17 had been one ofthe most advanced sub-marines made by Japan at thetime. Hough said it had beenclose to the size of a footballfield and later models hadbeen capable of launching air-craft.“It was a very small scale

but it was not a minor attack,”Hough said. “Even though alot of damage wasn’t apparentright away, a lot of damagewas done to the Americanpsyche.”The attack brought the war

from some far off islandsright to the front door ofmany U.S. citizens. Peoplebegan buying “AvengeEllwood” war bonds to helpfund the military. GeneralJohn L. DeWitt even cited theattack among other incidentswhen he advocated the intern-

ment of Japanese-Americans.Hough said it isn’t certain

why Ellwood in particularhad been chosen. While it’sbelieved that the JapaneseNavy wanted to prove a hit onthe U.S. mainland was possi-ble, the reason for Ellwood isless clear. A popular rumor holds that

the submarine’s captain hadbeen a skipper on Japanesetanker and while in the area,he’d fallen on a cactus anddecided to get revenge. Whileit makes for a good story,Hough said his research has-n’t found anything to substan-tiate that.Hough said the attack

began to fade from memoryafter the Doolittle raid and theBattle of Midway later in theyear which ended Japan’s

Dear Miss Kitty:

I have been in a long dis-tance relationship for the past1 1/2 yrs with the woman ofmy dreams. We see each otherevery other week end, havetaken many trips, and talk andtext every day. She is mylover, best friend, and I knowthis woman's soul.

I am retiring and movingto her city in 2 months. Wehave done everything right.Fell in love before we becameintimate, met our family andfriends at a comfortable pace, and the next step we alsowant to do perfectly. I plan toask her to marry me and thenext question will be: when?My feeling is "Why wait for along engagement?" (Shedoesn't believe in livingtogether.) Is there a reasonwhy we should wait?

I think youradvice is alwaysspot on so I wouldlike to know yourview on L.D. rela-tionships in generaland what would beyour thinking onmaking her my lifepartner.

Thanks,Bruce

Dear Bruce,You and your beloved

seem to have love wired to afault and need nothing fromme except congratulations-when the time comes.Actually toast yourselves nowsince you really have madethe best-of-all-possible-choices so far and I’m veryimpressed. It isn’t easy inthis day and age to take or

make the timeneeded to get toknow someone andlong distance rela-tionships (LDR's)can both hinder andhelp that processdepending how onegoes about them.LDR’s have a lotgoing for them-plusthe fishing net isthat much bigger if

you are willing to allow forthe differences that having aLDR instead of a local lovecan make. The inherent beauty of a

LDR is that it tends to mimicthe old fashioned romance ofcourting. Distance becomesthe protective parents to winover - and natural conse-quence allows an authenticand gradual closeness todevelop and deepen. Desire

can smolder and burn steadilyinstead of flaming out withthe easy pizza, beer and amovie on the couch plan thatis all too easy to fall into towhen living in the same town.Distance does one of two use-ful things rather quickly-either the heart grows fonderor out-of–sight, out-of -mindappears and makes the deci-sion for us. Either way thegreen or red light shows uppretty fast. LDR’s enjoy the unique

benefit that each person canexperience, realize and enjoythat keeping and maintainingone’s identity, friends andhobbies can be done withoutever sacrificing the relation-ship. This is an extremelyvaluable tool to have in thesanity vault for the future.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Director Michael Moore championed non-fiction filmmakerson Wednesday night at a pre-Oscar event honoring nominees forbest documentaries, attributing a growing appetite for the artform to a public starved for the truth. The often controversial director, who won an Oscar for gun

control movie "Bowling for Columbine" and scored the highest-grossing documentary of all-time with anti-war film"Fahrenheit 9/11," was hosting a symposium at the Academy ofMotion Picture Arts and Sciences featuring nominees for bestdocumentary features and short subjects."We've been living in a time where people have been lied to

a lot," Moore told Reuters. "People are tired of it and they wantthe truth, and documentaries represent the truth."Throughout his career Moore has been criticized by some for

being too one-sided in films that range from 1989's "Roger &Me" about laid off auto workers to 2007's healthcare analysis"Sicko" and two years later, "Capitalism: A Love Story."

After the red carpet has been walked and Oscars given out onSunday night, Hollywood's stars will dine to what master chefWolfgang Puck calls his "greatest hits" of recipes.Puck, who is perhaps more famous than some of the celebri-

ties he will feed, on Thursday unveiled his menu for the annualGovernor's Ball following the Academy Awards. He and hisstaff of 350 will serve some 1500 guests including HollywoodA-listers such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie."You can almost call it Wolfgang's greatest hits over 30

years," Puck told reporters about the meal. "This is the perfectmenu because there's something for everybody."An 18-year veteran of the post-Oscar party thrown by the

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Puck and ChefMatt Bencivenga have whipped up more than 50 dishes includ-ing hors d'oeuvres and small-plate entrees offered buffet style.

TMZ: Did Brown steal telephone?Miami officials on Thursday said they are investigating R&B

singer Chris Brown, who is currently on probation for assault-ing ex-girlfriend Rihanna, following reports that he may havebeen involved in the theft of a mobile phone.Celebrity news website TMZ.com reported that a 24-year-old

woman filed a police report in Miami Beach this past Sundayfor "robbery by snatching" and that Brown was the culprit. The TMZ report said the woman tried to take pictures of the

singer as he was leaving a nightclub and Brown took her iPhoneand drove away.Miami Beach police did not immediately return calls for

comment, nor did Brown's representatives.

CINEMA IN FOCUS

Americans are often con-flicted over their loyalties totheir country, wanting towave the flag bravely withour troops, while at the sametime questioning the motivesof some in our government.Right from the start, ourFounding Fathers built intothe Constitution a series ofchecks and balances that weremeant to protect us from our-selves. This was based on adeep-seated distrust of thekings of Europe who imposedquestionable practices andvalues on their subjects whileclaiming it was for their owngood. In 21st Century America,

we are caught in the samedilemma. We want to cheer wildly at

a stadium for the NationalAnthem and at the same timewe cringe at some of the can-didates running for President. At a deeper level, there is a

nagging fear that people of illintent or selfish interests willdominate an otherwise cleanpolitical system, and our realand projected ideals for ourcountry will be compromisedand lost.“Safe House” takes us into

the murky world of the CIA, agovernment agency that isconsidered by most people asa necessary evil; a counter-point against a troubled worldoutside our country’s borders. While the FBI may be por-trayed in films as the house-

cleaning police force fightingagainst the likes of Al Caponewho attacked mom and popenterprises in the heartland, the CIA is most often por-trayed as a clandestine worldof spy’s and counter-spy’swhere evil itself sometimesinfiltrates the ranks of itsmembers. In the world of the CIA,

“safe houses” are runthroughout the world by lowlevel employees to hold highlevel criminals being trans-ported to trial.Such is the case of a safe

house in South Africa main-tained by Matt Weston (RyanReynolds). For months Mr.Weston is in a state of bore-dom until he is informed thata top rouge spy, Tobin Frost(Denzel Washington) hasbeen captured and is beingbrought to him for safekeep-ing. Within minutes of Frost’s

arrival surrounded by a hand-ful of CIA operatives, the

“safe house” is compromisedand unknown assailants killthe operatives protecting theprisoner. From here the restof “Safe House” unfolds asMatt Weston escapes andtakes Tobin Frost on the runwith him. The mystery is,who is trying to kill TobinFrost, and why?“Safe House” is similar to

the “Bourne Identity” whereit is hard to tell who the badand good guys are. TobinFrost had been one of thebrightest stars in the CIA sys-tem who “went rouge” adecade ago and has beensought ever since. In thisstory he turns himself in tothe local Embassy in SouthAfrica to protect his life, eventhough his greatest threat maybe coming from inside theU.S. government. At its core, “Safe House” is

not about whether our gov-ernment is good or bad, butrather it is about the tempta-tion of greed that confrontspeople in positions of trust. Itisn’t surprising that somepolice officers give into greedand take money to protectlocal mobsters, nor is it sur-prising that some spy’s wouldgive into greed when the levelof money offered for statesecrets is greater than whatthey make in salary in a life-time.The question that “Safe

House” raises is what wouldwe do when confronted by

significant temptation? Oneanswer in this story is thatevil will follow you through-out the rest of your life. Theother answer is that you willpay giving into temptationwith the price of your soul.“Safe House” is an intrigu-

ing but predictable spy storythat will entertain you, but italso is a morality play in thatgood triumph’s over evil. Itmay not give you a high levelof confidence in our govern-ment, but it will challengeyou to personally make theright choice when confrontwith temptation.Discussion for those who

have seen this film:1. The temptations we each

experience is specific to ourown spiritual weakness. Howare you most tempted andwhat has been the effect whenyou fell for that temptation?2. The fear that someone is

abusing their authority is builtinto our system of law. Doyou believe this balance ofpower is working? Why doyou answer as you do?3. As a story, do you

believe the violence presentedwas necessary to tell the tale?

Local lovers often get caughtup in the whirlwind whichnew love can be and lose whatis healthy self interest. Likethe slow leak in a tire, a quiet-ly undetected slipping awayof the self. This is somethingthat can eventually leave therelationship flat and in serioustrouble out on the love high-way. It is easily correctedonce the puncture has beenidentified but the relationshipdoesn’t always make itthrough the repair. LDR’s also avoid the easy

trap of cohabitating for thecash savings. Life isn’t agame show folks - and it isapparently all too easy toshack up with what is behinddoor number one and cut thecosts of having two couchesto eat pizza on. Financialconsiderations are somethingto factor in but with a LDR itwill never be a prime reasonfor being together. When the

time comes- if it does - reallove and not the Domino’scoupons will be the motivat-ing factor to make the travelarrangements. Speaking of travel, this is

one of the best ways to testcompatibility, and it seemslike you have navigated thisnicely. If you can’t get alongat George Bush Internationalat 3am after a bumped flight-you might want to call it aday. Traveling is a good minimarriage test and dependingon where you go-brings outthe best, the worst and theMacGyver in all of us. Howone handles the “I didn’tdrink the water but I did havethe ice even though we readthe travel guide” will speakvolumes about the possiblefuture Mr. or Mrs. LDR.

Darling Bruce, Boys andGirls, the blueprint for happi-ly-ever -after is a documentthat needs continual tweak-ing. Nothing is set in stonebut that you promise to love, respect and understand that

all relationships have theirups and downs but when theyare good they are alwaysworth fighting for. Based onwhat you wrote, Bruce youand yours have a good set inthe works and I certainly givemy blessing (for what it’sworth) to call Elvis and do itright and do it now. If Elvisisn’t available let me knowand I will get my preacher-for-a-day license from thecity!

Have a naughty day!
