NEW PERSIAN COOKINGA Fresh Approach to the Classic Cuisine of IranJila Dana-Haeri, Shahrzad Ghorashian, Jason Lowe

The subtleties of Persian cuisine and their exciting mix of flavours are totally distinct from other styles of cooking and make it one of the great cuisines of the world. The traditional emphasis on the use of fresh and seasonal ingredients and the importance of a complementary mix of herbs, vegetables, meat, fish, fruit and spices, accords well with the modern desire for healthy eating and a balanced diet. This highly-illustrated cookbook offers an enticing introduction to traditional Persian cuisine through recipes that are accessible to the non-professional cook and are based on ingredients that are readily available in the West. Jila Dana-Haeri has adapted traditional Persian recipes to fit the requirements of today’s modern cooks, demonstrating that Persian food can be made easily anywhere in the world. Featuring beautiful photographs by award-winning food photographer Jason Lowe, this book will be essential for anyone interested in sampling Persian cuisine and expanding their cultural horizons.224 PAGES 248 X 191MM 2011 9781848855861 HARDBACK £20.0035 COLOUR

ANCIENT HISTORY

THE AGE OF THE PARTHIANSThe Idea of Iran, Vol. 2Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis, British Museum, & Sarah Stewart, SOAS (Eds)

The Parthians are a fascinating but little-known ancient civilization. In the mid-third century BCE a bold and ambitious leader called Arsaces challenged Hellenic rule and led his armies to victory. The dynasty which he founded ruled over what became a mighty empire and restored the glory of Iran following the region’s conquest by Alexander the Great. This imperial eastern superpower, which lasted for 400 years and

stretched from the Hindu Kush to Mesopotamia, withstood the might of Rome for centuries. The Parthians were nomadic horse-warriors who left few written records, concentrating rather on a rich oral and storytelling tradition. What knowledge we have of this remarkable people derives primarily from their coinage, which mixed Hellenism with Persian influences. 176 PAGES 234 X 156MM 978 1 84511 406 0 HARDBACK £52.50THE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES, VOL. 2

THE RISE OF ISLAMThe Idea of Iran, Vol. 4Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis & Sarah Stewart (Eds)

This final volume in the successful series The Idea of Iran addresses the astonishing impact made by Islam during and after the Arab conquest of Iran in the middle of the seventh century. As the Sasanian dynasty crumbled before the invaders’ triumphant onslaught, its state religion of Zoroastrianism was unceremoniously dismantled to make way for the new faith of the victorious desert warriors. Yet why,

if Iran jettisoned its indigenous religion, did it still manage to retain its Persian language and distinctive Iranian identity once Muslim governance took hold? These, and other intriguing questions, are addressed by the book, which includes distinguished contributions from world-renowned scholars such as Hugh Kennedy, Edmund Bosworth, Robert Hillenbrand and Ehsan Yarshater. The volume offers one of the most ambitious perspectives on Persian religion, society and culture to be published to date.128 PAGES 234 X 156MM 978 1 84511 691 0 HARDBACK £39.50THE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES, VOL. 4

THE IDEA OF IRAN SERIESEARLY ISLAMIC IRANThe Idea of Iran, Vol. 5Edmund Herzig and Sarah Stewart, SOAS (Eds)

How did Iran remain distinctively Iranian in the centuries which followed the Arab Conquest? How did it retain its cultural distinctiveness after the displacement of Zoroastrianism – state religion of the Persian empire – by Islam? This latest volume in The Idea of Iran series traces that critical moment in Iranian history which followed the transformation of ancient traditions during the country’s conversion and initial Islamic period. One of the paradoxes of this era is that the establishment throughout the eastern Islamic territories of new Turkish dynasties coincided with the genesis and spread, into Central and South Asia, of vibrant new Persian language and literatures. Exploring the nature of this paradox, separate chapters engage with ideas of kingship, authority and identity and their fascinating expression through the written word, architecture and the visual arts.304 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 2011HARDBACK 9781780760612 £39.50THE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES, VOL. 5

BIRTH OF THE PERSIAN EMPIREThe Idea of Iran, Vol. 1Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis, British Museum, & Sarah Stewart, SOAS (Eds)

Of the great ancient civilizations, that of Persia is the least known and the most enigmatic. This book explores the formation of the first Persian Empire under the Achaemenid Persians. It brings together a multi-disciplinary view of ancient Iran in the first millennium BCE and concentrates on the art, archaeology, history and religion of a geographical area far beyond the present borders of modern Iran in the period

beginning just before the formation of the Persian empire in the middle of the 6th century up to its collapse following conquest by Alexander the Great in the late 4th century BCE.160 PAGES 234 X 156MM 978 1 84511 062 8 HARDBACK £52.50ILLUSTRATEDTHE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES, VOL. 1

THE SASANIAN ERAThe Idea of Iran, Vol. 3Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis, British Museum, & Sarah Stewart, SOAS (Eds)

Seizing power from the previous dynasty – the Parthians – the Sasanians ruled Iran and most of the ancient Near East from 224 until 642 CE. They are particularly fascinating because of their adherence to Zoroastrianism, an ancient dualistic Iranian religion named after the prophet Zarathustra (or, in Greek, Zoroaster). The Sasanians expressed the divine aspect

of their rule in a variety of forms, such as on coins, rock reliefs and silver plates, and architecture and the arts flourished under their aegis. Sasanian military success brought them into conflict with Rome, and later Byzantium. Their empire eventually collapsed under the force of the Arab army in CE 642, when Zoroastrianism was replaced with Islam.192 PAGES 234 X 156MM 978 1 84511 690 3 HARDBACK £39.50THE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES, VOL. 3

LITERATURE, BIOGRAPHY AND TRAVEL

WONDROUS WORDSThe Poetic Mastery of Jalal al-Din RumiLeonard Lewisohn, University of Exeter (Ed.)

Widely admired, translated and commented upon, the works of Jalal al-Din Rumi remain largely unexamined from a literary perspective. Emphasis has been placed on him as a spiritual master, and on his Masnavi (Rumi’s great masterpiece, consisting of Sufi teaching stories given profound mystical interpretations). As a result, the poet has often been concealed from view. Yet there is much to be explored and discovered in the poetic legacy of Rumi’s entire corpus:

his dynamic use of imagery; his mastery of lyrical expression; his creative use of poetic devices; the powerful rhetoric of his narrative structures; and more. This substantial volume, offering contributions from leading scholars of Persian literature and culture, focuses on the poetic art of Rumi and the various ways it interacts with the literary tradition that came before and after him. 360 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 20129781848852709 HARDBACK £45.008PP COLOUR PLATES

THE PHILOSOPHY OF ECSTASYRumi and the Sufi TraditionLeonard Lewisohn (Ed.), Exeter University

The spiritual writings of the great Persian poet Rumi (1207–1273) are often characterised as the supreme expression of Sufism, the fascinating mystical strain that runs through Islamic thought and culture. This important volume brings together international Rumi experts and scholars to explore the ways in which the mysticism of Sufism coloured and shaped Rumi’s passionate poetic philosophy. Ranging from

a comprehensive investigation of the language and spirituality of the Masnavi, Rumi’s greatest literary work, to the intriguing relationship between Rumi’s poetic vision and Christians and Sufis, the volume as a whole offers an indispensable companion to the poetry of the man who, perhaps before all others, can best lay claim to reveal the rich complexity of Persia’s soul.360 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2012978184885 269 3 HARDBACK £45.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 23

HAFIZ AND HIS CONTEMPORARIESA Study of Fourteenth-century Persian Love PoetryDominic Brookshaw, University of Manchester

Hafiz of Shiraz has long been celebrated by many as the greatest Persian poet within the annals of world literature. During the fourteenth century he was master of the Persian ‘ghazal’ – the pre-eminent genre of love poetry in the Iranian world in its day and which, in the hands of Hafiz, reached the pinnacle of its development and refinement. Dominic Brookshaw here places Hafiz into a broader literary context by comparing his poetry with his two most important contemporaries: ‘Ubayd-i Zakani and the poet-princess, Jahan-Malik Khatun, whose ‘ghazals’ have received insufficient scholarly attention to date. Brookshaw presents here for the first time many previously untranslated ‘ghazals’. This detailed comparison enables a truer picture of the distinct and innovative nature of Hafiz’s poetry to emerge.288 PAGES 234 X 156MM MAY 20129781848851443 HARDBACK £56.50BRITISH INSTITUTE OF PERSIAN STUDIES, VOL. 3

THE CYRUS CYLINDERThe Great Persian Edict from BabylonEdited by I.L. Finkel, British Museum

Some historical artefacts are destined forever to alter how the ancient world is perceived. The unearthing in Iraq (in 1879) of a clay cylinder-shaped decree from Cyrus the Great, founder of the Achaemenid dynasty of Persia, stands in the same tradition of game-changing discoveries from antiquity as Hammurabi’s famous law code or the intact tomb of the boy-king Tutankhamun. For the Cyrus Cylinder contains in microcosm the whole history of its period. Inscribed with an account of the conquest of Babylon in 539 BCE by the Persian King, it records an event which launched one of the greatest imperial adventures in history. It describes Cyrus’ capture and deposition of Nabonidus, last native Babylonian ruler (represented by the Cylinder text as an oppressor of his own people) and proclaims the Persian as a liberator. The Cylinder has also been called the world’s first declaration of human rights, setting out the decree by which Cyrus freed the Jews from captivity in Babylon. This important volume is the first to discuss the Cylinder and its remarkable history.160 PAGES 246 X 189MM APRIL 20129781780760636 HARDBACK £35.00

A HISTORY OF PERSIAN LITERATURE Ehsan Yarshater, General Editor, Columbia University

A New History of Persian Literature in 18 Volumes.

Persian literature is the jewel in the crown of Persian culture. It has profoundly influenced the literatures of Ottoman Turkey, Muslim India and Turkic Central Asia. It has been a source of inspiration for Goethe, Emerson, Matthew Arnold and Jorge Luis Borges among others and praised by William Jones, Tagore, E. M. Forster and many more. Yet whereas Persian art and architecture, and more recently Iranian cinema, have been written about extensively and at different levels for a varied audience, Persian literature has largely remained the exclusive domain of specialists. And although in the past few years the poems of Rumi have attracted the kind of popular attention enjoyed by Omar Khayyam’s quatrains in the 19th century, Persian literature has never received the attention it truly deserves.A History of Persian Literature answers this need and offers a new, comprehensive and detailed history of its subject. This 18-volume, authoritative survey reflects the stature and significance of Persian literature as the single most important accomplishment of the Iranian nation. Prominent scholars in the field bring a fresh critical approach to bear on this important topic and each volume includes representative samples of this literature.

EARLY MODERN AND SAFAVID IRAN

SAFAVID THINKERSThe Intellectual Creators of Iran’s Renaissance in the early Modern PeriodAndrew Newman, University of Edinburgh

The Safavid era is the key to the emergence of modern Iran. Safavid Iran became a regional superpower, with its reach extending beyond its domains into the Middle East, South Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean. This was the period in which, challenging Ottoman and Mughal power, an Iranian nation state was established, with a defined central government, state sovereignty and settled borders. The Shahs,

especially Shah Abbas, have been credited with Iran’s rise to power but Andrew Newman’s revisionist study demonstrates that the mainspring of Safavid progress was the work of a range of intellectual giants who would dominate the thinking of any era. These iconic figures provided the religious and cultural underpinning of the renaissance of Iran under the Safavids. Their influence has endured to this very day.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 20129781780760841 HARDBACK £49.50

THE PRACTICE OF POLITICS IN SAFAVID IRANPower, Religion and RhetoricColin P. Mitchell, Dalhousie University, Canada

The Safavid dynasty originated as a fledgling apocalyptic mystical movement based in Iranian Azarbaijan, and grew into a large, cosmopolitan Irano-Islamic empire stretching from Baghdad to Herat. Here, Colin P. Mitchell examines how the Safavid state introduced and moulded a unique and vibrant political discourse, reflecting the social and religious heterogeneity of

sixteenth-century Iran. Beginning with the millenarian-minded Shah Isma’il and concluding with the autocrat par excellence, Shah Abbas, Mitchell explores the phenomenon of state-sponsored rhetoric. A thorough investigation of the Safavid state and the significance of rhetoric, power and religion in its functioning, The Practice of Politics in Safavid Iran is indispensable for all those interested in Iranian history and politics and Middle East studies.304 PAGES 228 X 155MM JANUARY 20129781780760964 PAPERBACK £17.99

IRAN AND THE WORLD IN THE SAFAVID AGEWillem Floor and Edmund Herzig, University of Oxford (Eds)

The Safavid era is of special significance in the history of Iran. The age is known for its wealth of contributions to Persian culture and to the arts of the Islamic world, its robust military encounters with its Ottoman and Mughal neighbours and growing contacts with western Europe. But little is known about the social, cultural, commercial and diplomatic relations of

the Safavids with the rest of the world. Iran and the World in the Safavid Age presents the most recent research into Safavid Iran’s foreign relations. It challenges the long-held notion that, with the adoption of Shi’ism, Iranians retreated into relative isolation, suggesting rather that they engaged with the world in unprecedented and exciting ways. With contributions from the leading authorities in the field, Iran and the World in the Safavid Age explores Iran’s relations with other countries and cultures. 672 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 20119781850439301 HARDBACK £45.0025 B&W, 25 LINE DRAWINGSI.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IRAN HERITAGE FOUNDATIONINTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 2

THE MONETARY HISTORY OF IRANFrom the Safavids to the QajarsRudi Matthee, University of Maryland Willem Floor and Patrick Clawson, Washington Institute for Near East Policy

The monetary history of a country provides important insights into its economic development, as well as its political and social history. This book is the first detailed study of Iran’s monetary history from the advent of the Safavid dynasty in 1501 to the end of Qajar rule in 1925. Using an array of

previously unpublished sources in ten languages, the authors consider the specific monetary conditions in Iran’s modern history, covering the use of ready money and its circulation, the changing conditions of the country’s mints and the role of the state in managing money. Throughout the book, the authors also consider the larger regional and global economic context within which the Iranian economy operated. As the first study of Iran’s monetary history, this book will be essential reading for researchers of Iranian and economic history.320 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 20129781780760797 HARDBACK £45.00

PERSIA IN CRISISSafavid Decline and the Fall of IsfahanRudi Matthee, University of Maryland

In this ground-breaking new book Rudi Matthee revisits traditional sources and introduces new ones to take a fresh look at Safavid Iran in the century preceding the fall of Isfahan in 1722. Matthee views Safavid Iran as a network of precarious alliances subject to perpetual negotiation and the society they ruled as an uneasy balance between conflicting forces. An increasingly detached, palace-bound shah; a weakening link between the capital and the outlying provinces; the regime’s neglect of the military and its shortsighted monetary policies combined to exacerbate rather than redress existing problems, leaving the country with a ruler too feeble to hold factionalism and corruption in check and a military unable to defend its borders against outside attack by Ottomans and Afghans. The scene was set for the Crisis of 1722.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM OCTOBER 20119781845117450 HARDBACK £30.00I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IRAN HERITAGE FOUNDATIONINTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 17

AN ANTHOLOGY OF PHILOSOPHY IN PERSIA, VOL. IVFrom the School of Illumination to Philosophical MysticismS.H. Nasr, George Washington University & M. Aminrazavi, University of Mary Washington (Eds)

The fourth volume of An Anthology of Philosophy in Persia deals with one of the richest and yet least known periods of philosophical life in Persia, the centuries between the 7th/13th century, which saw the eclipse of the school of Khorasan, and the 10th/16th century which coincided with the rise of the Safavids. The main schools dealt with in this volume are the Peripatetic (mashsha’i) School, the School of Illumination (ishraq) of Suhrawardi, and various forms of philosophical Sufism, especially the school of Ibn ‘Arabi, which had its origins in the works of Ghazzali and ‘Ayn al-Qudat Hamadani. This period was also notable for various philosopher-scientists such as Nasir al-Din Tusi and Qutb al-Din Shirazi. 424 PAGES 234 X 156MM APRIL 20129781848857490 HARDBACK £39.50I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES

AN ANTHOLOGY OF PHILOSOPHY IN PERSIA, VOL. IFrom Zoroaster to Omar KhayyamS.H. Nasr, George Washington University & M. Aminrazavi, University of Mary Washington (Eds)

Volume 1 starts with the Zoroastrian period and extends to the time of Biruni and Oma Khayyam, paying special attenton to the peripatetic school associated with Ibn Sina (Avicenna). During the pre-Islamic period philosophy was intertwined with religion, and it is within Persian religious

texts such as the Gathas, the Denkard, and the Zoroastrian texts of the Bundahisn that philosophical discussions of subjects ranging from metaphysics to cosmology and eschatology are to be found.520 PAGES 234 X 156MM 978 1 84511 541 8 HARDBACK £39.50I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES

AN ANTHOLOGY OF PHILOSOPHY IN PERSIA, VOL. IIIsmaili Thought in the Classical AgeS.H. Nasr, George Washington University & M. Aminrazavi, University of Mary Washington (Eds)

Volume 2 covers five centuries of Ismaili philosophy, and includes extracts from outstanding Ismaili works including the Rasa’il Ikhwan al-Safa (Treatises of the Brethren of Purity) and the philosophical odes of Nasir Khusraw. It is of great siginificance that, in the early centuries of

Islam, philosophers were influenced by Pythagorean and Hermetic ideas, which are usually associated with Shi’i thought in general and Ismailism in particular. Ismaili philosophy at this time was able to integrate strands of Greco-Alexandrian thought such as Hermeticism and Neo-Pythagoreanism, as well as aspects of Mazdaeism and Manichaeism. It also showed marked interest in Neo-platonism.424 PAGES 234 X 156MM978 1 84511 542 5 HARDBACK £39.50I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES

The tradition of philosophy in the Persian-speaking world is extraordinarily rich, creative and diverse. This anthology, which is divided into three volumes, aims to communicate something of that richness and diversity. The term ‘philosophy’ is understood to in its widest sense to include theological debate, philosophical Sufism and philosophical hermeneutics (ta’wil). Extending over a period of more than two millennia, and showcasing translations by well-established scholars, the anthology offers full bibliographical references throughout. For anyone interested in exploring, in all their varied manifestations, the fascinating philosophical traditions of Persia, such a wide-ranging and ambitious work will be an indispensable resource.488 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2010978 1 84511 605 7 HARDBACK £39.50I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES

THE BAHA’IS OF IRAN, TRANSCASPIA AND THE CAUCASUSVOLUME 1Letters of Russian Officers and OfficialsSoli Shahvar, Gad Gilbar and Boris Morozov (Eds)

Despite growing interest in the Baha’is of Iran, research on the history of this often-persecuted minority community has been limited by the availability of sources. The Baha’is of Iran, Transcaspia and the Caucasus will help to fill this gap by assembling for

the first time original material from Russian archives. Volume 1 of this set showcases letters from the Rozen collection, including those of diplomats, army officers and scholars, candidly revealing the Russian perspective on developments concerning the Baha’is in Iran and Russia. In addition to the complete texts in their original languages, the authors provide both annotated translations and analytical introductions which supply essential background information, thus making this book an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Babi and Baha’i history, the history of religion and minorities, Russo-Persian relations or Qajar Iran.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 20119781848853911 HARDBACK £59.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 26

PERCEPTIONS OF IRANHistory, Myths and Nationalism from Medieval Persia to the Islamic RepublicAli M Ansari, University of St Andrews

From the Sasanian to the Safavid Empire, and from Qajar Iran to the current Islamic Republic, the history of Iran is one which has been coloured by a rich tradition of myths and narratives and shaped by its wealth of philosophers, cultural theorists and political thinkers. Perceptions of Iran dissects the construction of Iranian identity, to reveal how nationalism has been continually re-formulated and how self-perceptions have been carried by Iran’s literary past, in particular the mystical love poetry of Rumi, Sa’adi and Hafez. It traces a long history of encounters with the Western world and tracks Iranian thought from Herodotus’ representation of Cyrus to the Constitutional Movement of the early twentieth century. This book ties together the diverse threads of Iranian intellectual activity that have underpinned social and political movements, from nineteenth-century discourses on a liberal nationalism to the anti-Westernism of figures such as Sayed Jamal Al-Afghani and Ayatollah Khomeini. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 20129781848858305 HARDBACK £56.50

FERDOWSI, THE MONGOLS AND IRANIAN HISTORYArt, Literature and Culture from Early Islam to Qajar PersiaRobert Hillenbrand, Edinburgh University, A.C.S Peacock, British Institute, Ankara and Firuza Abdullaeva University of Cambridge (Eds)

Iran’s rich cultural heritage has been shaped over many centuries by its rich and eventful history. This impressive book, which assembles contributions by some of the world’s most eminent historians, art historians and other scholars of the Iranian

world, explores the history of the country through the prism of Persian literature, art and culture. The result is a seminal work which illuminates important, yet largely neglected, aspects of Medieval and Early Modern Iran and the Middle East. Its scope, from the era of the Shahnameh to the period of the Mongols, Timurids, Safavids, Zands and Qajars, examines the interaction between mythology, history, historiography, poetry, painting and craftwork in the long narrative of the Persianate experience. As such, the book will be essential reading and a reference point for students and scholars of Iranian history, Persian literature and the arts of the Islamic World. 352 PAGES 246 X 189MM JULY 20129781780760155 HARDBACK £65.00

SHI’I ISLAM IN IRANIAN CINEMAReligion and Spirituality in FilmNacim Pak-Shiraz

In recent years there has been a remarkable surge in Iranian films expressing contentious issues which would otherwise be very difficult to discuss publicly inside the Islamic Republic of Iran – such as the role of clergy in Iranian society. Nacim Pak-Shiraz here highlights how many Iranian film directors concern themselves with the content of the religious and historical narratives of

culture and society, sparking debate about the medium’s compatibility or incongruity with religion and spirituality. She explores the various ways that Shi’i discourse emerges on screen, and offers groundbreaking insights into both the role of film in Iranian culture and society, and how it has become a medium for exploring what it means to be Iranian and Muslim after thirty years of Islamic rule. This is invaluable for reading students and scholars of Film Studies and contemporary Iranian cinema, but also of the culture and identity of Iran more widely.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 20119781848855106 HARDBACK £56.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF CULTURAL STUDIES, VOL. 17

THE POETICS OF IRANIAN CINEMAAesthetics, Modernity and Film after the RevolutionKhatereh Sheibani, University of Guelph, Canada

In the wake of the Islamic Revolution, Iran experienced not only profound political and social changes, but also underwent a dramatic shift in its cultural and literary discourse. In The Poetics of Iranian Cinema, Khatereh Sheibani argues that Persian poetry, fiction, painting and other art forms

all were influenced by the upheavals of the 1970s and 80s, but that this remarkable cultural revolution is best evidenced in Iranian films. In fact, she holds that film ultimately replaced poetry as the dominant form of cultural expression in Iran. As evidence, she presents a comparative analysis of post-revolutionary Iranian cinema – particularly the work of Abbas Kiarostami and Bahram Bayzai – as an offshoot of Iranian modernity, and explains its connections with the themes present in traditional Persian poetry and conventional visual arts. She thus offers an original contribution to the scholarly literature on Iranian cinema, politics and culture.240 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 20119781848857414 HARDBACK £54.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 33

EPIC OF THE PERSIAN KINGSThe Shahnameh of FerdowsiBarbara Brend and Charles Melville, University of Cambridge (Eds)

Composed more than a millennium ago, the Shahnameh – the great royal book of the Persian court – is a pillar of Persian literature and one of the world’s unchallenged masterpieces. Recounting the history of the Persian people from its mythic origins down to the Islamic conquest in the seventh century, the Shahnameh is the stirring and

beautifully textured story of a proud civilization. But the Shahnameh (or, literally, the ‘Book of Kings’) is much more than a literary masterpiece: it is the wellspring of the modern Persian language, a touchstone for Iranian national consciousness and its illustrations, in manuscripts of different eras, are the inspiration for one of the world’s greatest artistic traditions. Epic of the Persian Kings combines revealing scholarship with stunning, full-colour illustrations from the rich manuscript tradition of the Shahnameh. 256 PAGES 271 X 218MM NOVEMBER 20119781848856561 PAPERBACK £25.00145 COLOUR

NEWTHE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF IRAN UNDER THE QAJARSSociety, Politics and Foreign Relations 1799 to 1921Hooshang Amirahmadi, Rutgers University

This book provides a critical analysis of Iran’s economic, social and political development and shows how the path to modernity, far from smooth, was hindered by both internal and international factors. These included a powerful monarchy with little interest in administrative and economic reform, a large aristocracy frequently holding vital provincial governorships and frustrating effective central government and a failure to modernise the civil service, military, banking, finance or communications – the essential infrastructure for economic development. Reformers were marginalised and business suffered. And the all-powerful ulema were a further brake on modernisation. On the international front, the rivalry of Britain and Russia compounded the problems: both acting to control Iran and to further their own interests. Hooshang Amirahmadi reveals the roots of present-day challenges to modernisation and progress. 400 PAGES 234 X 156MM MAY 20129781848856721 HARDBACK £59.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 30

POLITICAL ISLAM IN POST-REVOLUTIONARYIRANShi’i Ideologies in Islamist DiscourseMajid Mohammadi, Glenville State College, West Virginia

The relationship between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Western World is fraught with challenges and tensions. In order to generate the capacity for greater engagement and dialogue, there is a need for the West to better understand the complex ideological developments that

are central to Iran. Majid Mohammadi charts the central concepts and nuances of the ideological map of post-revolutionary Iran, and examines the rise and development of Shi’i Islamism. He recognises that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iranian political discourse are the outcome of contesting perspectives and ideologies: identity-oriented, socialist, nationalist, authoritarian, Shari’a, scripturalist, mystical, militarist and fascist. This is a comprehensive, comparative contribution to one of today’s most important topics: that of the relationship between Political Islam and the West.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 20129781848852761 HARDBACK £56.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 24

NUCLEAR IRANThe Birth of an Atomic State David Patrikarakos, The Economist

The Iranian nuclear crisis has dominated world politics for almost ten years, with the country now facing increasing diplomatic isolation, talk of strikes against its nuclear facilities and a disastrous Middle East war. Behind the rhetoric from all sides there is little real understanding of Iran’s nuclear strategy, and the history behind it. This ground-breaking book argues that Iran’s nuclear programme and the modern history of the country itself are irretrievably linked;

and only by understanding one can we understand the other. From the programme’s beginnings under the Shah, the book details the central role of the US in the birth of nuclear Iran. The author’s unique access to ‘the father’ of Iran’s nuclear programme, as well as to key scientists under the early Islamic Republic and to senior Iranian and Western negotiators, sheds new light on the uranium enrichment efforts that lie at the heart of global concerns. His insight into the effect of the ‘stuxnet’ virus on Iran’s capabilities makes for particularly fascinating reading. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 2012HARDBACK 9781780761251 £24.50

ART, ARCHITECTURE AND CULTURE

THE ART AND MATERIAL CULTURE OF IRANIAN SHI’ISMIconography and Religious Devotion in Shi’i IslamPedram Khosronejad, University of St Andrews

Shi’i Islam has been the official religion of Iran from the Safavids (1501-1732) to the present day. The Shi’i world experience has provided a rich artistic tradition, encompassing painting, sculpture and the production of artefacts and performance,

which has helped to embed Shi’i identity in Iran as part of its national narrative. In what areas of material culture has Iranian Shi’ism manifested itself through objects or buildings that are unique within the overall culture of Islam? To what extent is the art and architecture of Iran from the Safavid period onwards identifiably Shi’i? What does this say about the relationship of nation, state and faith in Iran? Here, leading experts trace the material heritage of Iranian Shi’ism within each of its political, religious and cultural dimensions.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 20119781848851689 HARDBACK £51.5050 INTEGRATED B&W, 8PP COLOUR PLATESI.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IRAN HERITAGE FOUNDATIONINTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES , VOL. 29

PERSIAN GARDENS AND PAVILIONSReflections in History, Poetry and the ArtsMohammad Gharipour, University of North Carolina

From Timur’s tent in Samarqand to Shah ‘Abbas’s palace in Isfahan and Humayun’s tomb in Delhi, the pavilion has been an integral part of Persianate gardens since its earliest appearance at the Achaemenid garden in Pasargadae in the sixth century BC. Despite its significance, the pavilion has often been neglected in the study of gardens and the cultural contexts of its

development. This is a gap that Mohammad Gharipour seeks to address, emphasizing pavilions as vibrant and dynamic parts of Persian gardens. Using textual and visual media not only clarifies the significance of gardens and pavilions as cultural icons, but also explains their typological diversity and their spatial, formal, and functional qualities. This book reaches back through Persia’s rich history to explore the material and psychological relationships between human beings, pavilions and gardens, the impact of gardens on political, cultural and social affairs.320 PAGES 246 X 189MM JULY 2012HARDABCK 9781780761213 £56.00

FROM IRAN TO HOLLYWOOD AND SOME PLACES IN-BETWEENReframing Post-Revolutionary Iranian CinemaChristopher Gow, University of Glasgow

The rise in popularity of the New Iranian Cinema has been a fascinating success story and critics have hailed Iranian films as alternatives to the global influence of mainstream Hollywood cinema. Drawing on seminal ideas of ‘art cinema’, Christopher Gow examines how the success of this cinema and the films of Abbas Kiarostami,

its foremost proponent, can be accounted for by the extent to which they fit into a pre-established notion of art cinema. Gow also seeks to expand understanding of post-revolutionary Iranian cinema by examining the links between the New Iranian Cinema and émigré Iranian filmmaking from the uncompromising German films of Sohrab Saless, to Vadim Perlman’s exploration of the Iranian experience of exile in the Oscar-nominated House of Sand and Fog. He reveals how this large and dispersed émigré Iranian cinema challenges our understanding of New Iranian Cinema itself and of national cinema in general.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 20119781848855267 HARDBACK £51.509781848855274 PAPERBACK £17.99

WAR IN IRANIAN CINEMAReligion, Martyrdom and National IdentityPedram Khosronejad (Ed.), University of St Andrews

While the cinema of post-revolutionary Iran is internationally acknowledged, the world outside Iran has been ignorant of the Iranian war films that are the subject of this pioneering book. A massive production of over 50 Iranian feature films concentrating primarily on fighting and military operations have appeared since the 1980s with the beginning of the war between Iran and Iraq. This book presents a detailed exploration

of the Sacred Defence Cinema, established by Seyed Morteza Avini, a cinema that directly connects this specific war to the faith and religious belief of volunteer guardians of the revolution. The main objective of Sacred Defence Cinema is martrydom. As the distinguished film scholar Hamid Dabashi writes in his Introduction to the book: ‘If national cinemas are predicated on national traumas, in the volume that Pedram Khosronejad has put together we are at the heart of the heart of Iranian cinema’.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 20129781848852853 HARDBACK £54.50I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IRAN HERITAGE FOUNDATION

KHATAMI’S IRANThe Islamic Republic and the Turbulent Path to ReformGhoncheh Tazmini

When Mohammed Khatami stormed to his 1997 election victory in a landslide result, the world waited anxiously for the reforms and radical changes that he would bring to the Iranian Presidency. By the end of his term in 2005, general disillusion had spread among his supporters. But when in early 2009 Khatami again announced his candidacy for the Presidency, he was

greeted with massive enthusiasm and support. The Ahmadinejad period of the previous four years had dramatically restored the fortunes of this mild-mannered, cerebral cleric who sought to bring Iran into the twenty-first century, end its international isolation, mend relations with the US and take its place as the leading regional power. But who is this enigmatic cleric, so little known in the West, whose grasp of Iran’s realities seems so much firmer than that of many of the secular figures around him? This book for the first time reveals the background, formation and thinking of a man who may yet change the face of politics in the Middle East.240 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 20129781848851825 PAPERBACK £14.99

THE IRAN CONNECTIONUnderstanding the Alliance with Syria, Hizbullah and HamasAmal Saad Ghorayeb

As Iran’s suspected nuclear ambitions place it on an apparent collision course with the western powers and the Arab Gulf states, understanding its regional alliances takes on a huge strategic importance. The Lebanese group Hizbullah, the Palestinian group Hamas and Bashar al Asad’s Syria are all critical players in the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the puzzle of their relationship to their Iranian allies has confounded diplomats for

many years. Would Hizbullah start a war on Israel’s northern border in the event of an Israeli air-strike on Iran? Can Syria be prised from the alliance? How will Hamas’s negotiating position evolve? Drawing on her unique access to decision-makers in Lebanon, Tehran and Damascus, Amal Saad Ghorayeb unpicks this unusual strategic bloc of secularists and Islamists, Arabs and Iranians, Sunni and Shia, and seeks to provide a rigorous analysis of its mechanics. The Iran Connection is essential reading for anyone looking to understand the real dynamics of today’s Middle East.256 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 20129781848857407 HARDBACK £29.95

MODERNITY AND THE STATELESSThe Kurdish Question in IranAbbas Vali, University of Bogazici

The Kurds are the largest stateless nation in the world. They live under the jurisdiction of four sovereign states – Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria – which deny their national identity and suppress its political and cultural manifestations. The diversity that springs from this division has deprived

the Kurds of ideological cohesion and political unity. Offering a wealth of new information on the history and politics of Kurdish nationalism, this book also looks at the wider issues of stateless nations, their identities, rights and obligations and the problems such nations pose for normative political theory which presupposes the framework of the modern nation state.256 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 20129781860640506 HARDBACK £39.50LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES, VOL. 26

UNDERSTANDING IRANFrom Ancient Times to the Islamic RepublicWilliam Beeman, University of Minnesota

In this riveting book, William Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Although Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its natural identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage

producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. Iran’s national epic, the ‘Book of Kings’, is one of the gems of world literature with flawed heroes and sympathetic foes striding through its verses. This poetic ambiguity is felt in every aspect of Iranian social and political life today. Thoughtful and informative, Beeman’s book explains this dazzling and much misunderstood country with a verve and in a style which make it a pleasure to read.224 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 20139781845119690 PAPERBACK £9.99

KURDS AND THE STATE IN IRANThe Making of Kurdish IdentityAbbas Vali, Bogaziçi Universiti, Istabul

In early 1946, Kurds declared an independent republic in north-west Iran. The Mahabad Republic, as it became known, was the first time that the Kurds experienced self-rule in the modern era. Although short-lived, the Republic had a formative influence on the subsequent development of Kurdish nationalist movements in Iran and the wider region. Here, Abbas Vali disputes the conventional view that the Kurdish Republic

was the result of a Soviet conspiracy to dismember Iran, a side-effect of the Cold War. Instead he emphasizes the diversity of the internal Iranian and Kurdish factors that led to the formation of the Republic, arguing that the Republic represents the culmination of a new and modern Kurdish national identity. This was an identity which emerged in response to the exclusionary effects of the political and discursive processes and practices of the construction of a modern Iranian nation-state and national identity since the Constitutional Revolution of 1906. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 20119781848857889 HARDBACK £49.50INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 36

GERMAN FOREIGN POLICY TOWARDS IRAN BEFORE WORLD WAR II Political Relations, Economic Influence and the National Bank of PersiaRashid Khatib-Shahidi, University of Oxford

Early twentieth century Iran had been dominated by the competing influences of the two great imperial powers of the time – Russia and Britain. But an emergent, highly industrialised and assertive Germany in the 1930s became an attractive ally through which Iran could cut loose from domination by Britain and the Soviet Union, allowing it to seek modernity outside the constraints of old imperial interests. It was the National Bank of Persia, established in 1927 under German management, and with Kurt Lindenblatt as its governor, that was to be the vehicle for Germany’s economic expansion into Persia. But this was a relationship that came to an abrupt end with the Allied invasion of Iran in 1941. NEWISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE IN IRANPoststructural Theory and the Architectural History of Iranian MosquesSaeid Khaghani, University of Manchester

The architecture of the Islamic world is predominantly considered in terms of a division between ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ – a division which, Saeid Khaghani here argues, has shaped and limited the narrative applied to this architecture. Khaghani introduces and reconsiders the mosques of eighth- to fifteenth-century Iran in terms of poststructural theory and developments in historiography in order to develop a brand new dialectical framework. By presenting a new way of thinking about and discussing Islamic architecture, this will be valuable reading for all interested in the study of the art, architecture and material culture of the Islamic world.288 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 20119781848857292 HARDBACK £59.5016PP COLOUR PLATES, 8 INTEGRATED B&WINTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 4

BECOMING VISIBLE IN IRANWomen in Contemporary Iranian SocietyMehri Honarbin-Holliday, Canterbury Christ Church University

Becoming Visible in Iran disputes the widespread stereotypes about Muslim women prevalent in the West, providing a vivid account of young women in contemporary Iran. Beginning at home, women are infusing dramatic change by challenging the patriarchal conceptions of their fathers, brothers, uncles and others within the intimate sphere of family and home. Empowered by education, they transport the power of their minds and being from the domestic to the public and political. Through detailed interviews and striking narratives, Mehri Honarbin-Holliday presents the experiences of these young women who wield a key if indirect political influence on the seemingly male dominated politics of this society, as they achieve a new visibility. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2012PAPERBACK 9781780760865 £14.9915 B&W INTEGRATEDINTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 14

Provocation is the key theme in the antagonistic relationship between the US and post-revolution Iran. The two nations are the source of a growing tension felt around the globe. Politics of Confrontation is a penetrating critique of international relations theory within the historical framework of US-Iranian relations from the early reign of the Shah to the revolution

under the Ayatollah Khomeini, with particular emphasis on the final years during the Carter administration. This thorough examination provides the first in-depth look at US documents seized from the American Embassy by revolutionary students during the infamous hostage crisis. Babak Ganji’s findings are an essential addition to the discourse of foreign policy theorists as well as being invaluable for historians of the US, Iran and the Cold War.328 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 20119781848859647 PAPERBACK £25.00

CULTURAL REVOLUTION IN IRANContemporary Popular Culture in the Islamic RepublicAnnabelle Sreberny & Massoumeh Torfeh (Eds) both at SOAS

The Islamic Republic of Iran has entered its fourth decade, and the values and legacy of the Revolution it was founded upon continue to have profound and contradictory consequences for Iranian life. Despite the repressive power of the current regime the immense creativity of popular cultural practices, which negotiate and resist the system, is a potent and dynamic force. This book draws on the expertise and experience of

Iranian and international academics and activists to address diverse areas of social and cultural innovation that are driving change and progress. While religious conservatism remains the creed of the establishment, this volume uncovers an underground world of new technology, communication, media and entertainment that speaks both to women seeking a greater public role and to a restless younger generation that organises and engages with global trends online.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 20129781780760896 HARDBACK £56.50

ARAB-IRANIAN RIVALRY IN THE PERSIAN GULFTerritorial Disputes and the Balance of Power in the Middle EastFarzad Cyrus Sharifi,Kings College London

Iranian ambitions in the Persian Gulf and rivalries with Arab neighbours are subject to intense – and heated – speculation, controversy and debate. Here, Farzad Cyrus Sharifi scrutinises the rival Arab-Iranian claims to Bahrain, the Shatt al-Arab waterway, and the Abu Musa and Tunbs islands in the years after World War II and before the Iranian revolution. Through investigation of previously unexamined primary materials and interviews with leading players, this book sheds new light on the evolution and dynamics of hegemonic and nationalistic Arab-Iranian rivalries and how these rivalries began to find symbolic expression through territorial disputes. POLITICS AND CONTEMPORARY IRAN

Contents:Introduction; Persia, The International Environment and Germany’s Commerical Approach; German Policy towards Persia; development of German Relations with Persia and its National Bank; Trial for German Policy towards Persia and the National Bank; The controversy surrounding the National Bank and the end of the Taimurtash Era; The Lindenblatt Affair and the National Bank; Germany’s Re-established Influence in Persia; Summary and Conclusion.288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 20129781848853249 HARDBACK £39.50

The Iranian nuclear crisis has dominated world politics for almost ten years, with the country now facing increasing diplomatic isolation, talk of strikes against its nuclear facilities and a disastrous Middle East war. Behind the rhetoric from all sides there is little real understanding of Iran’s nuclear strategy, and the history behind it. This ground-breaking book argues that Iran’s nuclear programme and the modern history of the country itself are irretrievably linked;

and only by understanding one can we understand the other.
