The International Monetary Fund in its Regional Economic Outlook for the Western Hemisphere” is projecting regional growth of 2.5 per cent in 2014 for the Caribbean region. The tour-ism-dependent economies are expected to grow on average by 1.4 per cent in 2014 and the commodity exporters by 3.2 per cent. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have made laudable progress in the past fifteen years in reducing pov-erty, building the middle class and pro-moting prosperity for all levels of soci-ety. The sheer values of the Caribbean eco-systems are in the trillions of dol-lars. It maintains stable, governance,

middle income economies, have access to varied currencies, and a highly dis-ciplined and educated skilled human resource base both within the region and in the overseas Diasporas. The re-gion remains under-populated but with an abundance of minerals including oil, gold, gas, forestry and water. Offshore education, health services and information and communication technology (ICT) enabled activities ARE identified as possible additional areas of potential growth, particularly for English-speaking countries. In offshore education, medical schools, represent a small but grow-ing services sector that has responded to a growing and unfulfilled demand

for physicians in the United States. St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada and Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica are two of 23 primarily offshore medical schools in the region, whose graduates together account for close to 70 percent of the international medical graduates enter-ing the US. Demographic trends sug-gest there is scope for an expansion of growth in this sector. Similarly, the cross-border pro-vision of health services has created opportunities for Caribbean health service and health-tourism providers. (A Time to Choose: Caribbean Develop-ment in the 21st Century) .

FAST FACTS“Here and there you find skep-ticism that lots of things have been tried, but there is energy in the Caribbean to talk about what can be done differently for different results.”

TOP NATIONS LOOKING AT THE CARIBBEAN

From 2003 until 2012, China’s in-vestment in the Caribbean has grown to US$500 million.  During his June 2013 visit to Trinidad and Tobago, China’s President Xi Jinping announced US$3 billion in soft loans and investments, as well as a grant of US$8 billion to the re-gion.  Most of the investments are meant for the construction of highways, ports and hospitals.  While small compared with China’s presence in Latin America and Africa, it represents a substantial investment in contrast to the erosion of the US’s position in the region.  Chi-nese corporations’ direct investments in the region have averaged about US$10 billion per year since 2010 in the Carib-bean and Latin American region. Their presence and economic leverage have become very significant in many indus-tries and countries of the region.

Latin America received 13 percent of the country’s total OFDI stock, al-though 92 percent of this went to the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands, and the remaining 8 percent went mainly to Brazil, Peru, the Bolivar-ian Republic of Venezuela and Argenti-na. (Summit on the Global Agenda World Economic Forum, November 2013) France is seeking to have its ma-jor companies engage in five key mar-kets: Panama, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Trinidad and Haiti. (David Jessop, News Americasnow.com) Over the last two to three years, Rus-sian interest in the Caribbean has been growing. Moreover, Russian visitors are growing in the Caribbean. According to Dominican Republic tourism officials, some 158,415 Russian visitors visited the country in 2012, a figure 35 per cent higher than in the previous year, and one that they hope will grow by around 51 per cent this year. How To Set Up A Company Or Open An International Personal & Corporate Accounts In The Caribbean?

There are several locations to open an account for an offshore company in the Caribbean. All reputable banks will require very detailed personal and business information from the owners and con-trollers of the offshore account. In particular, the bank will need to know and identify the actual benefi-cial owner (s) of the offshore company. All such persons, as well as everyone who will be granted account signatory rights, will have to be properly identi-fied and will have to provide a number of documents - such as a certified pass-port copy, a copy of a second photo-ID, a bankers and/or professional refer-ence, a detailed business description and a cash flow forecast. (These docu-mentary requirements may vary.)

While account introduction through an approved intermediary is still often possible without personal appearance of the owner of the company in the bank, nevertheless the banks will require to know their clients in very substantial detail. This is simply required by the laws that regulate banking industry. However, in order to open a bank account for an offshore company, the most important aspect is that of the actual owners and controllers of the company, its business and manner of operation.

The Caribbean Market Village (CMV) is a tourist driven, ‘all included’ des-tination to be established on the island of Saint Lucia in the southern Caribbean. A synergistic blend of five profit centers, CMV, targets honeymooners, vacationers, families, business travelers, local businesses, entrepreneurs and on-island leaders. This novel concept in Caribbean tourism establishes a new philosophy in the hos-pitality business that speaks to value, sustainability, growth and success. Imagine a family-oriented tourist destination, where all you desire in Saint Lucia is at your fin-gertips: fun, exotic foods, laughter, romance, adventure, culture, nature, sea life, teen center, business center, kids through teen water park, a carnival celebration and much more! CMV is the natural evolution of the ‘all inclusive’ concept. This is a business brand that does not exist anywhere in the Caribbean. CMV is comprised of five lines of business, each representing one of the five points of our “starfish” theme. They include 1) Starfish Plaza; 2) Kidsville – Island of Tudor; 3) Saxman Executive Office Suites; 4) Club Excelsior, Saint Lucia; and 5) Serenity Village & Cliffside Suites. While these profit centers are completely autono-mous and complete, they serve to reinforce and strengthen the value offered by each, creating a synergy that is unmatched anywhere else on the island or in the Caribbean. Presently. the CMV is open for investment. For more information about The Caribbean Market Village please contact Sheila Newton Moses.
