Introduction
What is Scaffold to the Stars?
Phase I of Scaffold to the Stars provides access to a collection of open educational learning digital resources (textbooks, videos, problem sets) to support instructors who teach developmental (remedial and credit bearing) mathematics courses at Ohio’s two-year and regional campuses. The library of resources is organized around key topics and learning objectives drawn from the Ohio Transfer Module outcomes. Scaffold to the Stars resources are available online at http://ilearnohio.org/projects/scaffold/.
What is Scaffold to the Stars?
Phase II of the Scaffold to the Stars project builds on the project’s prior work and focuses on providing collections of resources (modules) geared towards students who need to "brush up" on mathematics. Many colleges and university math departments have placement tests. These modules are designed to help students place into a college math course, rather than a non-credit bearing remedial course. The online modules and can be found at http://ilearnohio.org/projects/scaffold/.
Who can benefit from the modules?• STUDENTS• Students preparing to take a college placement test• Students that are currently enrolled in a
developmental math course and need extra help• Students that need to “brush up” on certain topics
• INSTRUCTORS• Provide students with resources to supplement
instruction• Support current instruction
Module Topics
① Arithmetic: Integers, Ratio and Proportion, and Percent② Polynomials: Expressions and Formulas③ Equations: Linear and Systems④ Equations: Quadratic and Systems⑤ Functions: Linear and Quadratic⑥ Functions: Logarithmic and Exponential⑦ Trigonometry: Functions and Inverses, Right Triangle
Trigonometry, and Simple Identities⑧ Probability and Statistics: Data Representation,
Measures of Center and Simple Analysis
Should I review the modules in a certain order?• The modules can be accessed in any order, however,
there is a bit of a sequence to what is provided. If you are struggling with a specific module, try accessing the prior module.• Within the modules, topics are addressed in a
progression that parallels most instruction around that content. If you skip straight to the middle of a module and find it too difficult, go back until you are at a point in the module that you are comfortable and begin your work there.
Structure of the Modules
• Each module will start with a brief overview of the content and resources contained in the module, including an explanation of how the slides were organized.• Then, you will see an outline of the topics to be covered
in the module.• The slides that follow the outline will address the specific
topics to be covered. Each slide will include either a URL or supplements to the topic, along with a brief description of the resource.
① The modules were created to help you refresh these topics that you have already encountered in previous courses. Spend as much or little time on each page or reference so that you feel confident on that idea.
② Before clicking on a link read the short description to help you know what you will be doing (and why) with the resource/web page.
③ Come back to the module (powerpoint) to proceed at anytime.
④ The more time you spend refreshing on these topics the more likely you’ll be to score better on a college placement test.
General advice while using the modules:
How do I access the modules?
• The modules are available online at http://ilearnohio.org/projects/scaffold/.
• If your college/university has access to the ilearnOhio LMS, then you can access the modules at https://scaffold.ilearnohio.net.
Note that you will need either PowerPoint or some PPT reader
