Hidden Valley FBLA:

What a year HV FBLA! I want to thank you for allowing me to lead you and watch you grow into Future

Business Leaders of America.

The 2015-2016 school years ended on a high note. We, as a chapter, received our 15th straight Chapter of

the Year title! Not only did we succeed as a chapter, but we also showed off our individual skills. We

brought home 20 awards from state, and had 3 top ten finishes at the National Leadership Conference. It

was an awesome experience watching you guys step up to the challenge in Atlanta and show your true

skillset.

This year at Hidden Valley we were able to participate in many different community service projects. We

participated in local events such as Cycle Oregon, First Community Credit Union Fun Run, and also

helped prepare for the local duck derby. You, as members, helped us fundraise for our organization by

selling chocolate bars and working our student store. We were able to attend conferences such as the

Oregon Leadership Institute, the Regional Skills Conference, and the State Business Leadership

Conference.

I want to encourage you to continue growing as leaders, within FBLA and outside of this wonderful

organization. Our chapter has a past full of success and it is our responsibility to make our future bright.

Congratulations on the wonderful year we have had and I am grateful for everyone that makes Hidden

Valley FBLA the great organization it is.

Sincerely,

Devin Pine, Chapter President

Number of Members – Every year, Hidden Valley FBLA tries to gain as many new members as possible. This 2016-2017 year, the chapter has 80 members. There are 31 freshmen this year, making up the largest amount of our FBLA members. The large amount of freshman, gives the older, more experienced members a chance to take a leadership role and help out the younger members.

Size of School – Due to a very populated Grants Pass High School in 1997, Hidden Valley High School was built along with two other high schools to help with the overpopulated GPHS. Hidden Valley brings in students from twenty miles in every direction to establish student body population of 540 students for the 2016-2017 school years.

Size of Community – Grants Pass, Oregon has a population of 35,000. Grants Pass is well known for being situated by the famous Rogue River. During the summer, there are many things to do around the community, including, jet-boat trips, hiking, fishing, swimming and much more. Due to these activities, our town attracts many tourists every year. Josephine County is a volunteer oriented community. Local businesses are very supportive of our FBLA chapter, and they are extremely helpful in lending a hand when needed.

Open House - Hidden Valley High School hosts an annual Open House for all students to bring their parents and show them around our campus. Parents have the opportunity to talk to our advisers to learn information about our FBLA chapter. We gain the interests of parents and students at the Open House by explaining upcoming events and past projects. This event is very successful in our recruitment process. Chapter Meetings - BAA Meeting – At the beginning of every year, Hidden Valley’s adviser holds a chapter meeting during first break. For this meeting, Each of the members brings a friend that isn’t a part of FBLA to try and recruit them. Every year, the classroom is filled with students who are eager be a part of FBLA.

Classroom Presentations - Officers utilized their public speaking skills by giving presentations to the chapter at Hidden Valley High School. They informed the students of the chapter’s community service activities, social activities, conferences, upcoming events, and many of the benefits and opportunities FBLA has to offer.

Mustang Round Up - Every year, Hidden Valley sends members from all sorts of clubs, organizations, and sports teams to present activities to our incoming freshman. This event is called the “Mustang Round-Up”. During this presentation, students are given the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about any activities HVHS offers. This is a great chance for students to connect with members of our FBLA chapter.

State Officers – In 2016, four of the Hidden Valley FBLA members ran for positions as state officers, three of which were elected. Josie Notter was elected as State President, Austin Green as Executive Vice President, and Abby Hardin as Vice President of Media. Three of the four candidates ran campaign booths at state in Portland, Oregon. This is an accomplishment of which the Hidden Valley chapter is very proud of.

OLI (Oregon Leadership Institute) - Every year Oregon holds a leadership institute for members of FBLA to enhance their leadership skills. At OLI members are able to participate in many different hands-on workshops, at these workshops they are inspired by professional leadership trainers and get the chance to connect with fellow members from around the state.

Practice Presentation Night – To prepare Hidden Valley FBLA members for Competitive Events, the chapter holds mock interviews and presentations. Members from the community judge these presentations by listening and asking specific questions about each competitive event. The interviews replicate the competition setting with appropriate business attire, and professional communication. The goal of this is to simulate a competitive environment to prepare members for competition.

Homecoming 2016 – One of the most exciting parts of the year is when homecoming rolls around. For the past 17 years Hidden Valley’s chapter has been known to be in charge of the annual Homecoming dance. This year's theme was “007”, everybody was excited to dress up like a secret agent and the chapter once again met the expectations. Homecoming not only gives members the chance to raise money but it also helps give members opportunities to display leadership skills while working together.

Chapter Office Meetings – Every two weeks Hidden Valley FBLA chapter officers hold meetings in the class, “Applied Business Projects.” This gives the officers a chance to discuss new ideas and opportunities, as well as working together as a team. The skills learned from these meetings are very useful and the officer will continue to use them into their future in order to be successful leaders.

Competitive Events – All members get the opportunity to participate in competitive events every year. Some of the most successful events the chapter has made it to national competition in is Business Plan, Community Service Project, and American Enterprise. In FBLA competition is viewed as a way to show hard work and excellence and it gives members motivation to keep improving.

Grants Pass Kiwanis Club – The Grants Pass Kiwanis Club is one of the major supporters of the Hidden Valley FBLA chapter. Whenever help is needed they are always there and ready to help. The club helps with things like volunteering at events, funding for student’s trips, and providing a variety of activities for chapter members to get involved. Josephine County Foundation – The Josephine County Foundation is a student-led nonprofit organization that serves the Grants Pass community in many different ways. The Hidden Valley High School FBLA chapter does many projects through this foundation. All of these projects and events help benefit the community in some sort of way. JCF gives many of Hidden Valleys members numerous opportunities to get involved; It’s also a great way for the members to give back to the community as well as gaining volunteer hours.

Student Store – At Hidden Valley, the FBLA chapter sells various items from the student store for students and staff to purchase. The store is open three times every day, during morning break as well as first and second lunch. Every year, the chapter collects about a $4,000 profit. Students who work in the store are paid $3 for every 15 minute shift they work. Homecoming Set Up & Take Down – Every year Hidden Valley’s FBLA chapter puts together homecoming. By helping set up and take down homecoming, the members are able to learn leadership skills while gaining work experience. Homecoming is one of the most helpful fundraisers for chapter members. At this event members are able to raise up to $100 a piece.

Candles – In the past years, the Hidden Valley chapter also took part in a popular fundraiser by selling candles. The members successfully raised about $200.00 with this fundraiser! The money raised went towards the state trip. This fundraiser was beneficial to the members who participated in it.

Concessions – During school sporting events, the Hidden Valley FBLA chapter runs the concession stands. These sporting events include Football, Volleyball, and Baseball. Previously, this year, they raised roughly about $3,400 helping out with this fundraiser. Items sold at these concessions include, hot dogs, hamburgers, candy, water, soda, chips, pretzels and much more.

Scrapbook – Hidden Valley FBLA uses a scrapbook as a recruiting tool every year. During the recruiting event, like Open House, we show students and their families the scrapbook to see every event we take part in. The scrapbook also helps us keep a record of everything we have participated in.

KLDR/The Daily Courier – Many of the chapter's activities have been published in the Daily Courier, the local newspaper. The events are often published to inform everyone in the community. KLDR, a local radio station, also helps us gain recognition throughout Grants Pass. Whether we are having a fundraiser or a fun event for the community to be involved in, KLDR never fails to put our name out to help spread the word.

Yearbook – Every year our chapter makes an appearance in the Hidden Valley yearbook. In our pages it talks about our success in events that we participate in. Also, we show many fun activities we do during the year.

Local News Station – Our Partnership with Business team was featured on a local news station, News 10 KTVL, for their Disability Awareness Weeks. It aired twice at 6 and 11 o’clock. During this interview, the Team talked about different awareness days, and a wheelchair basketball team. It was great publicity for out Hidden Valley FBLA chapter.

Project JAIL – Project JAIL is a community service project geared towards raising awareness about the hazards of impaired driving. Partnering with the nationwide program of, “Every 15 Minutes”. The first day is a school wide assembly; at this assembly students perform a mock crash. With the help of local emergency response services we perform the scene making it as realistic as possible. On the second day we present a video of the crash and have a guest speaker talk about their experience with impaired driving. This program helps students see the reality of this dangerous scenario.

Project LEARN – Listen, Educate, Appreciate, Respect and Notice. Project LEARN was made to have Disability Awareness Weeks at all of the local high schools. Each day of the week had a different disability focus, and was a different learning experience for the students. The high school students spent the week experiencing one of several physical disabilities, including being deaf, blind, mute, and wheelchair bound, or having the loss of a leg. The goal was to educate students on what it takes to go through each day with a disability.

Project CASH – Correctly Applied Spending Habits is a two part project. It was designed to teach elementary students about the American Enterprise System and the importance of budgeting and to instigate a penny drive for the Josephine County Foundation. This year, eight classrooms at three elementary schools were taught for 2 weeks. Each day had a different concept to be taught.

Kids Dash – On June 11th, 2016, twenty kids from Hidden Valley High School went to Grants Pass High Schools track facility to hold a vision clinic for children of all age groups participating in the track and field events they had. This brought great leadership skills and development to the volunteers helping out the kids and interacting with them as well.

Winterfest – This year, 25 FBLA chapter members volunteered at the Bear Hotel for an event called Winterfest. Small groups of about two or three would help out the kids at different stations. They had a variety of activities set up such as, writing letters to Santa, coloring books, decorating ornaments, fishing, and building sleighs, etc.

Day of Service to the Community – For the past five years, FBLA members have volunteered at the Illinois River Fork State Park for “Public Land Day” and a “Day of Service”. They had many tasks they accomplished such as, cleaning the library, pulling weeds, and cleaning up the trails. Each year, Hidden Valley FBLA attends multiple conferences including the National Fall Leadership Conference, Oregon Leadership Institute, the State Business Leadership Conference and the National Leadership Conference. At each of these conferences, members gain valuable skills and knowledge to help them become great business leaders in the future. As well as equip them with new knowledge for the future ahead of them.

National Fall Leadership Conference Three Hidden Valley High School FBLA members attended the National Fall Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas, this past November. Attending the conference was Oregon FBLA State President Josie Notter, Oregon FBLA VP of Media Abby Hardin, and local adviser Chris Pendleton. Notter presented a unique workshop called “A to Z” of State Officer ship. The group was able to learn many valuable tips for the many workshops we were able to attend. The group was also able to see many of the sites that Dallas had to offer, including a fabulous Dallas Cowboys football game.

State Business Leadership Conference Every year, Hidden Valley’s FBLA chapter attends the State Business Leadership Conference or SBLC. This conference is a great opportunity for members to build leadership skills and network with other chapters around the state of Oregon. Hidden Valley’s chapter does significantly well every year in their competitions.

National Leadership Conference 32 members of Hidden Valley’s FBLA chapter attended the 2016 National Leadership

Conference (NLC) in Atlanta, Georgia. Students and advisers participated in motivational and professional workshops to help improve their ability to succeed in FBLA. The conference showed Hidden Valley’s Chapter not only about what it’s like to be in an FBLA competition, but also gave them useful tips on how to succeed in the business world in the future. NLC is a great opportunity to network with students from all over the nation. The chapter had many members attend and the competitors from Business Plan, Community Service Project and American Enterprise Project all placed in the Top Ten. This was a great accomplishment for the chapter.
