Our Candidates……………………………………………………………………9
On the 6th May 2021, we head to the polls to elect our representatives for the next four years. We are in the midst of a pandemic and are facing an economic crisis, so it is now more important than ever that we have strong leaders and creative thinking. Years of local budget cuts have starved our essential services so now when we need them most, they are struggling to support us. Despite the hardship and loss which we have all faced this year, its important that we grab this opportunity to transform our communities, build resilience and empower local people.
Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire Green Party is setting out a bold plan for change. We have produced a road map to revive our communities, protect our green spaces and build for the future. We must reject business as usual and elect green representatives who will start building communities for us all.
We hope that you will join us and together we can make a future to be proud of.
Darren Yates,
Derbyshire Green Party Coordinator

As local representatives we value your thoughts and opinions. We all
share a passion for our communities and want to make them better
places. We don’t believe in dictating how our towns and villages are run
but instead are focused on helping you to shape the places we all live.
We value the voices of everyone in our community and are determined to
represent you properly. The Green Party is the only political party not to
run a ‘whipping system’, which means local representatives are free to
speak up for local people and won’t just spout the party line.
Communicating with residents properly and honestly is a core value of
Green candidates. We aim to be open with local residents about the
issues affecting them and will always be transparent about our views and
procedures. Local politics should be open to local people.
Far too often are we made to feel like local politics is an alien concept out
of our control and too difficult to change. We are determined to change
that. Greens are passionate about including communities in decision
making processes and encouraging local engagement.
Local transport should be…well, local! We know our area better than anyone else and we should have a say in how we get around. Public transport no longer represents us; the timetables clash, important routes are skipped and services run late. Local transport should be in the hands of local people.
3
Identify local congestion hot
spots and look at measures
to ease traffic queues, cut
both travel times and
pollution, and make our
roads safer.Promote better regulation
of bus fares and routes;
working with bus
companies and other local
authorities to implement
more integrated tickets.
Investigate the feasibility of
opening up new rail routes
and railway stations to ease
congestion on roads.
Work with cyclists, motorists
and public transport users,
along with others, to ensure
they are able to influence
policy, highways and public
realm projects. Increase
investment in attractive and
safe routes for walking and
cycling.
The environment is one of our passions, but that doesn’t mean its all we stand for. We want our environment to flourish so we can harness its energy and transform our community. Our area should have a strong local food production, beautiful green spaces and thriving habitats.
4
Not only do we want to
promote the reduction of
waste across the county
and encourage re-use and
recycling, we are committed
to transforming the existing
systems so that nothing is
wasted.
A commitment to significantly
increase tree planting and stop
badger culling on all Council
land. Providing support for
charities, community groups
and farmers to plant trees,
rewild and restore local areas.
We will work hard to divest
public money from
environmentally harmful and
financially unsound
investments.
We will introduce
meaningful Climate
Emergency motions which
work with local communities
across the county in order to
achieve carbon neutrality by
2030.
Public services should be there to support us all when we need them most. The key areas of Social Care and Education should be properly resourced to provide the safety net we all require.
5
Support teachers, parents,
school children and
students of all age groups to
create an education system
that inspires children to be
their best and increase their
exposure to nature, theatre,
music and sports.
Focus on better care which
caters to individual needs.
We will oversee the
introduction of adequate
funding for dementia care,
mental health and disability
support.
Young people need their
spaces to be creative, have
fun and be themselves. We
will fund and restore youth
services, especially those
which assist children with
special educational needs.
Oppose the increase in
privatisation of care services
and stand up for the care
workers who have proved
themselves to be our real
heroes over the last 12
months.
Inappropriate developments have irreversibly changed the natural landscape of our county. We are committed to providing high quality, future proof homes to local people without destroying our precious green spaces.
6
Far too often homes are
built on unsuitable land and
poorly designed leaving
them vulnerable to flooding.
Rather than building flood
defences ever higher, we
will start to build appropriate
and smart housing.
Homes should be built to
keep you warm without
costing the earth. We are
committed to improving
home insulation and making
renewable energy
accessible to all.
Many of our communities
have limited green space
and we want to ensure
these are protected from
inappropriate development
so that we can all to enjoy
nature.
We are committed to
connecting our communities
responsibly. That means
improving local transport links
so that we can easily and
reasonably move around our
county.
Everyone has the right to feel safe - on the street, in their home or online. Simple things like more police on the beat and enforceable laws against malicious trolling can make a huge difference. However, not all crime can be tackled by being tough. Punishment for its own sake is ineffective. It might make us feel better, but it doesn’t change very much.
7
Defend the right of people
of all backgrounds – to
express their faith, whether
that be clothing, food or
reasonable accommodation
of religious observance.
Investment in youth services
and centres helps turn at-risk
children away from crime. All
the evidence shows the cuts
in youth services have
increased crime, especially
knife crime.
Confront racism,
antisemitism and prejudice,
including from an early age
through a broader,
decolonialised curriculum in
schools, focused on
histories and role models
from a diverse range of
backgrounds.
We will work with local
communities to identify
concerns regarding and
measures to reduce crime and
anti-social behaviour. Localised
solutions are far more effective
at understanding and
preventing crime.
Derbyshire Pension Fund has £146 million invested in
fossil fuels. Not only are they environmentally harmful
but financially unsound resulting in £65 million in
losses since 2017.
As we come out of the crisis caused by the pandemic, business as usual is not an option and the Green Party believes the best way to protect jobs is to work with local small and medium sized businesses and invest in their future.
8
The pandemic can be used
as a spring board for a
brighter future. Only the
Green Party will create new
jobs in improved public
transport, renewable energy
and in sustainable
development.
We will promote Derbyshire
and highlight all that makes
our county great. It will be
easy to show Derbyshire as
fantastic place to live, work
and start a business
because…it is!
Use the council’s spending
power, whenever possible,
to support local business
and avoid spending local
public money with private
multi-nationals.
Green councillors will
encourage innovative
apprenticeship schemes
and will push the Council
to take the lead as major
employer in the county.

Alongside studying, Frank has been
fighting hard to make a change for his
community.
As a parish councillor, Frank has
created a plan to plant over 700 trees,
introduced the councils first ever
climate policy and has achieved much
more for his community.
Frank was the youngest candidate,
aged 21, when he represented North
East Derbyshire in 2019 general
election.
Having lived in the area all his life
Darren is committed to seeing the
local community build back better
and greener from the recent
pandemic.
Darren works hard for our area as a
local campaigner, co-ordinator and
member of Chesterfield Borough
Council Climate Change Working
Group.
