Muharram is themonth with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, “The number of the months according to Allah is twelve (men-tioned) in the Book of Allah on the day He cre-ated heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified.” These four months, according to the authentic tra-ditions, are Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, declared: “One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab.”

The specific mention of these four months does not mean that any other month has no sanctity, because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah.

In fact, every month, out of the twelve, is originally equal to the other, and there is no inherent sanctity that may be attributed to one of them in compari-son to the other months. When Allah Almighty chooses a particular time for His special blessings, the same acquires sanctity out of His grace.

Thus, the sanctity of these four months was rec-ognized right from the days of Sayyidina Ibrahim, alayhi salam. Since the Pagans of Makkah attributed themselves to Sayyidina Ibrahim, alayhi salam, they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months.

In the Shariah of our Noble Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, the sanctity of these months was

upheld and the Holy Quran referred to them as the “sanctified months”.

Muharram has certain other characteristics special to it, which are specified below.

Fasting During the Month

The Noble Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has said: ‘The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram.”

Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet one who fasts in these days out of his own will is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. The Hadith cited above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are most reward-able ones among the Nafl or voluntary fasts.

The Hadith does not mean that the award promised for fasts of Muharram can be achieved only by fast-ing for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit. Therefore, one should avail of this opportunity as much as he can.

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH AWARDS

Students are recognised for their personal endeavor, achievement and contribution to the community, participation and a real concern for the environment.

PRINCIPAL MORNING TEA

A quarterly event that takes place each term is our Morning Tea with the Principal. This was initiated in 2002 to encourage students to form a good habit and take pride in performing extra school work dur-ing the term breaks (as a homework package) to enhance their Literacy and Numeracy skills. The number of students receiving this honour has grown exponentially over the past 6 years.

STUDENTS UNITING NATIONS

(SUN) PROGRAMAn initiative that began in 2004 by Sutherland Primary that in-cluded the local Jewish and Muslim schools’ Upper Primary students to run team building and social events.

The core purpose of this initiative is to build friendship and understand-ing amongst different cultures, nations and religions.

THERAPY FOCUS COMPETITION

Therapy Focus and DET, in their an-nual state-wide health promotion that promotes inclusion, diversity and the abilities of children with disability, invited all primary stu-dents to illustrate or paint a pic-ture for a story book that taught students the value of tolerance and understanding for people with disabilities.

80 of our students entered this competition and were rewarded with a complimentary copy of the published book, The Hidden Trea-sure of Moondyne Joe.

DIANELLA SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Our Yr 5 -7 boys have been participat-ing in the Champions School Soccer Competition. After losing the finals last year (on pen-alties) the boys and their coach Br. Mac were out for victory. With great pride Br. Mac informed the whole school how the boys played with tremendous effort, skill, team spirit (winning 4 and drawing 1 out of the 5 games). They finished equal top, however, were denied the trophy due to ‘a goal difference’.

Wake Up Call Issue 165 / 6 December 2009

THIS TERM The Australian Islamic College library in Kewdale organised the Scho-lastic Book Fair as an opportunity to fundraise for the school library and also provide an excellent opportunity for school students to purchase their favou-rite books. It ran through a week from 5th Nov 09 to 11th Nov 09, with the official opening ceremony taking place on Friday morning, 6th Nov 09.

So how was the Scholastic Book Fair? It was an exciting week for the AIC school library at Kewdale; starting from the preparations, right till pack up on the last day! The students, as well as parents were welcome to the library during its open-ing hours all through the event, giving them a chance to skim through books they found interesting, so that they may purchase them at a later visit during the week. The opening ceremony in itself also generated a lot of excitement with all the guests of honour that included Mr Abdallah Magar (Founder of AIC), Sr Nasreen (Acting Principal) and Sr Zainap Akoojee (Head of Primary), who all graced the event. All the invited guests who arrived to support the Scholastic Book Fair were warmly welcomed by the library staff, its volunteers, and sweet little visitors from kindy.

Not only that, but all of the students who had come to visit the library during this week were also awaiting a special visitor. This was none other than Clifford the dog who contributed to the much expected enthusiasm surrounding the Book Fair. The students, especially from the kindy and primary years, were simply overjoyed by his entry each time, and they had a chance to have loads of fun with him on several occasions during the week.

The library had great support from all the parents and the kindy, pre-primary, primary and high school teachers, and especially all the volunteers. They have all contributed immensely into making the Book Fair a pleasant success and great fun. All in all, it would perhaps be right to say that the Scholastic Book Fair was thoroughly an exciting, fun and produc-tive event!

As third year Nutrition students at Curtin University, we have enjoyed running the Nutrition and Cooking classes at AIC during the last couple of months. Most of us have never worked in a Muslim environment before and we enjoyed the opportunity it gave us to interact and get to know the students of AIC. We appreciated the enthusiasm that the students have for cooking with many of the students requesting copies of the recipes that we have made in class. The students seemed to improve in their cooking skills over the time we worked with them and also improved in their knowledge of healthy foods and kitchen safety. Thank you to the teachers and principal for allowing us this opportunity. Being involved in the cooking program at the school was a great experience. The students seemed to really enjoy the cooking sessions and it was a rewarding exercise to be a part of. The program has great potential to teach the students about healthy eating, as well as teach-ing them about new cooking skills. It would be great if the program could become a regular program run at the school and could really benefit the students at the school. Working with newly arrived students from AIC has been a great learn-ing experience for me.The students are very respectful and welcoming. Many of them were very enthusiastic about the cooking sessions and were willing to try new foods. The students were fully engaged in our activities and were keen to as-sist us as well as eager to acquire new cooking skills. I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences being involved in conducting the cooking workshops at the Australian Islamic College. I found it very rewarding meeting kids from all around the world and from such differ-ent backgrounds to my own. The students were mostly enthusiastic and interested in learning new skills both in and out of the kitchen. I think that they gained quite a lot out of the sessions and I hope that they will continue in the future with the help of the teachers and vol-unteers. The students and their teachers have been very welcoming. I have en-joyed the friendliness, enthusiasm and good manners of the students and have a lot of fun with them. I have enjoyed working with Rabab and the Teachers too.

IN YEAR ONE

LEARNING

In year one learning is more then just pen to paper much of students learning experiences are hands on and context embedded. This year the student in 1c Sr Donia’s class have been given the opportunity to show some of theses experiences through the use of technology. For the past term room 1c have been investigating plants through an integrated approach to learning in the science and technology learning area. A KWL was introduced at the beginning of the term to establish

what students Know, What they want to know and lastly what they have learnt.

Fostering curiosity is of great impor-tance in early childhood as it’s the beginning of inquire. It is here that students start to question the world around them. Interesting questions are then formulated and students be-gin to understand their environment.

Thought context embedded learn-ing students have been given the opportunity to grow bean seeds and then plant them on school grounds. Student have been watching them grow for the past 5 weeks and re-cording their data on a visual growth

chart. We then integrated technol-ogy through a program called photo story. Here students took digital photos of their learning journey. They took turns to transfer their photos on the photo story program which en-abled them to view their experiences through a digital story like book. Music and digital effects where added to enhance the story.

At the end of term 4 the digital story will be finished and students will be able to take a copy home to show their learning journey to their family on DVD format. By. SR Donia Elbakdadi

crossword puzzle

One hot day, an ant was searching for some water. After walking around for some time, she came to a spring. To reach the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her way up, she slipped and fell into the water. She could have drowned if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that the ant was in trouble, the dove quickly plucked off a leaf and dropped it into the water near the struggling ant. The ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to dry ground.Just at that time, a hunter nearby was throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to trap it.Guessing what he was about to do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feel-ing the pain, the hunter dropped his net. The dove was quick to fly away to safety.Moral of the Story: One good turn deserves another.
