Fasting on the Day of ArafahThe ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah (the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar) is the day of ‘Arafah. It is the day when pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafah to pray. On this day, Muslims all over the world who do not witness the annual hajj should spend the day in fasting, in preparation for the three days festivity following Eid ul-Adha (the celebration marking the end of the hajj commemorating the Prophet Ibrâhîm’s willingness to sacrifice).

Abû Hafsah, may Allâh be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said:“Fasting on the day of Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year, and fasting on ‘ashûra, (the tenth day of Muharram) atones for the sins of previous years.” [Reported by all except al-Bukhârî and Tirmidhî]

In another saying the Prophet’s wife Hafsah, may Allâh be pleased with her, said:“Four things the Messenger of Allâh never neglected: Observing fast on the day of ‘ashûra, ‘Arafat, three days every month, and offering fajr sunnah prayers early in the morning.” [Muslim]

These statements are proof that fasting on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, the day before ‘Eid ul-Adha was a lifelong practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as his wife reported. There are some reports that fasting is prohibited on the day of ‘Arafah. However, it must be understood that this refers to a person performing the hajj.If a person is on the hajj, there is no fast for him or her on the day of ‘Arafah. That is undoubtedly a blessing for him because of the hardships of the pilgrimage. In a saying reported by Umm al-Fadl, may Allâh be pleased with her, she said: “The companions doubted whether the Prophet was fasting on ‘Arafah or not. She decided to prove to them that he was not, so she said, ‘I sent to him milk, which he drank while he was delivering the khutbah (sermon) on ‘Arafah.’ “ [Recorded by al-Bukhârî]

Prohibiting the pilgrims from fasting on these days is a great mercy for them, for fasting will exert undue hardship on the person performing the hajj, while they are primarily concerned with their pilgrimage. Above all, the pilgrim would not be fasting anyway because he is travelling. By Tajuddin B. Shu’aib

We are very pleased to inform you that from week 4 in this term we will be starting weekly cooking classes for boys and girls in year 7 & 8The expected outcomes/purpose for the cooking classes are to:1. Help students to learn about cooking, nutrition and healthy eating. 2. Students will be more encouraged to eat what they make. Perhaps, it is the enthusiasm of creating something themselves, but they will be more likely to eat whatever they have a hand in making. 3. Students learn real lessons in science, language, math and creativity. Cooking will help reinforce all these subjects.4. What a great way to learn life skills. This can be especially helpful when students are on their own and won’t have to rely on fast food and junk food to sustain them. 5. They can help contribute to the family and they can feel the importance of helping. 6. Work together as a team, whether it is with a parent or with a sibling to get the job done. 7. Cooking teaches them planning and making choices. 8. Practice creativity and imagination.Students cooking activities are a great way to express themselves and enjoy their creations. Spellathon 2010 was organised on 1st of September by the Year two teachers as a fundraising activity where students participated in an oral spelling test.

This fun filled activity provided students with a strong incentive for learning new vocabulary and studying for the spelling test. In traditional spelling tests students are often disheartened by having marks deducted for mistakes. This activity, by contrast, was success orientated and confidence–enhancing, as students’ efforts were rewarded according to the number of words they spelled correctly. The objective of this event was to strengthen students’ vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation.

• Word lists were prepared and handed to the students. They had one week to prepare for the Spellathon.

• The participating students then asked their parents, relatives and friends to give a flat donation or contribute a certain amount for each correctly spelt word in the Spellathon.

• The donations collected will be used to buy resources for the classroom.

• Three top spellers were chosen from each class. Top ten students then competed to select the spelling champion for year two.Winner for the Spellathon were

The state of the environment has become a major concern for the world as a whole. As we continue to grow in population more environmental hazards require our attention. Waste is a major concern for many countries, where communities are facing the dilemma of running out of areas to dump waste. The importance of new ways of doing things is becoming apparent. Therefore during the 3rd term, our class learnt about reduce, reuse and recycle. The students got the idea of recycling. They learnt the: who, what, where, when and how of recycling and the processes which areinvolved. The students did an assembly performance on reduce, reuse and recycle.

3Rs’ Reduce, Reuse And Recycle

This term the students also learnt everything about the worm farm to have an endless supply of organic plant food by using the scraps and leftovers in the wheelie bin. This was also integrated with the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle. The Year 3B teacher – Sr Zaakia Parveen, organized an incursion with “Worm Shed” to provide the students with the hands on experience to know the capabilities of worms to recycle organic waste and convert it into nature’s own plant food. The students learnt a lot as well as enjoyed a lot by touching the worms and making worm farms by themselves.

The joy of reading and love of books is crucial for each child’s development .It is measured not only in school success but also in meaningful social interactions. This has been a decade of technological advances. From iPods to electronic readers children are bom-barded with electrical images and stimulations. But the surprising truth is that even with all the advances in electronics and gadgetry, reading to children and having them read is still one of the most important skills to give a child.Reading to a child can promote a child’s cerebral and emotional development. While any positive interaction between parent and child is helpful, reading is always a sure fire way to gain a positive foothold into a child’s life. Books open doors to new ideas, cultures and concepts. By reading to young children a parent helps instil a love of books in children and helps them want to read more.Reading still stands as one of the greatest gifts a parent can teach a child. By using the right book and the quality of time reading a parent is able to increase not only the child’s vocabulary but also the child’s love of reading. Using different resources and providing many opportunities to incorporate read-ing into the child’s day will insure success for both parent and child.A library is a very important aspect in the reading and learning process of your child. The extensive genre of children’s literature is an es-sential part of the growing up process. In case you have enough resources, it is always advisable to have an in-house library. If you think you cannot afford a library at home you can always visit the school Library at Kewdale. The Australian Islamic College –Kewdale Library staff work collaboratively with the teaching staff to develop students’ library and research skills. The library frequently introduces new resources and references to support classroom learning, and to keep up with students’ imaginations.

Australian Islamic College Thornlie has won one of two Acer Projector prizes valued at $1399 as part of Optometrists Association’s Children’s Vision campaign competition.

Assalamu alaikum,

The Kindergarten B class from the Thornlie school recently visited a local historical building in Gosnells called ‘Wilkinson Homestead’.This site has an interesting history of European settlement, Aboriginal heritage and has been important to the district’s agricultural development. The children undertook hands on activities in groups. They visited a 1912 school room and had a health inspection of their fingernails. The students learnt how citrus growing was a major aspect of life for many local pioneers. The children then squeezed and tasted fruit, saw a fruit grader in action and made a fruit box stencil! This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to participate in a cultural experience and broadened their experiences by mixing with the wider community.

The photo’s are a snapshot of some of the things we did on the day- playing and climbing in the park, participating in traditional games, ringing a cow bell, singing a traditional song and examining and learning about the different types of citrus fruit picked straight from the trees!Sister Lesley Anne MerdiKindergarten B Teacher

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)

What is the reward of Hajj? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, performing Prayer, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the Sacred House (Hajj), and fasting the month of Ram-adan.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

In his famous book Fiqh-us-Sunnah, the late Egyptian scholar Sheikh Sayyed Sabiq (may Allah bless his soul) states:Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The performance of `Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous ones. And the reward for Hajj Mabrur (pilgrimage accepted by Allah) is nothing but Paradise.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 3, Book 27, hadith no. 1)

In another Hadith, Ibn Juraij reported on the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This House of Allah (the Ka`bah) is the pillar of Islam; so whosoever heads for it with the intention of performing Hajj or `Umrah is under Allah’s Protection. If he should die (during this journey), he will be admitted to Paradise, and if he should return home safely, he will return with reward and gain.” (Al-Haythami, Majma` Az-Zawa’id) www.rasoulallah.net

1. School’s New Timetable: before I joined the school, there were three different timetables for lower primary, upper primary and the high school. Alhamdulillah, now we have one timetable with slight differ-ences to fit the needs of our lower primary, upper primary, high school students and Friday prayer. The new timetable will help to ensure more efficient running of the classes. It is based on 6 periods instead of 7 periods without affecting the time for instruction. This will allow us to achieve uniformity with the other two schools and better use the AIC info system for attendance. Accordingly, teachers’ timetables can be viewed online as of term 4 and students reports will be done electronically. 2. Teachers’ Qualifications: all our teachers are qualified and have WACOT registration. Six teachers have PRT status and all of them are assigned mentors to supervise them. All our teachers have their WWCC done. 3. Numeracy and Literacy: I have an appointment with the National Partnership Consultant from AISWA ‘Kath White’ to see her during the first week of term four to discuss with her our school’s results in NAPLAN and how we can further improve students’ performance in literacy and numeracy.4. Sports Teacher: a new Physical Education teacher has been employed for our primary students Year 1 – 7. 5. Lots of maintenance work has been carried out in the school including new carpet for some of the classrooms, upgrading the lab, painting many of the classrooms, pruning / cutting some of the trees …etc. I urge the parents who have not yet paid their children’s fees to do so to enable us to do more maintenance work and to purchase additional of resources for the students. I would like to remind our respected parents that the quality education they ask for requires them to pay the school fees.6. New Enrolments & School Fees: Alhamdulillah we have 8 new enrolments since I joined the school. New enrolments will only be considered if both parentscommit themselves to pay the fees and make advance payment. Inshallah all the parents will make necessary arrangements to pay their children’s 2010 school fees. 7. Year 7 Graduation ceremony will be in Week 6 / Term 4. The boys will then join Kewdale High School in week 7.8. Thornlie Mosque and BER Project: Currently we are work-ing on Thornlie’s mosque and BER issues. We will keep the community updated in this regard. Thanks to those who showed their support regarding the mosque issue.

9. The school organized an Eid celebration on 20th September. Thanks to Mrs Hayes who organized the event. Some of the school’s friends joined us on that day including the Principal of Thornlie Primary School and year 7 students and teacher. representatives of the Indonesian and Malaysian consulates and Mr Chris Tallentire, Member for Gosnells. Below is an extract from Hansard of a speech Mr Chris Tallentire gave in the Western Australian Parliament follow-ing the Eid celebration he attended at the AIC:

Extract from Hansard[ASSEMBLY - Thursday, 23 September 2010]

Mr Chris Tallentire; Acting SpeakerAUSTRALIAN ISLAMIC COLLEGE

EID CELEBRATIONStatement by Member for Gosnells

MR C.J. TALLENTIRE (Gosnells) [12.58 pm]: I had the honour of attending the Eid celebrations at the Australian Islamic College in Thornlie. The event was an excellent presentation of the fine values that are at the core of the Islamic faith and make Islam one of the world’s great religions. I was especially impressed by the way AIC students, parents, teachers and administrators are so keen to contribute to our Western Australian community and how the AIC is opening itself to the broader community. I was delighted that year 7 students from nearby Thornlie Primary School were guests at the Eid celebration. Helping young Western Australians to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of other cultures and faiths is essential to making Australia a strong participant in our increasingly internationalised world. I especially want to acknowledge the excellent work being done at the AIC by Dr Hamza Amira, Chairman of the AIC Board; Dr Mahmoud Eid, new principal of the AIC; and Mrs Enda Hayes of the AIC. In the past there have been some serious problems with the financial administration of the AIC, but I am very pleased to report that the school community has emerged from difficult times stronger than before. The excellent behaviour of the children, their academic performance, their love of their country and their desire to be strong contributors are exemplary. The latest challenge facing the AIC is getting the City of Gosnells to approve two separate projects. One is approval for projects funded through the federal government’s Building the Education Revolution program and the other is approval for the use of a prayer hall. I hope that these problems can be resolved in the very near future. I am very proud to have the AIC in Gosnells in my electorate. I congratulate the college on its good work.

On Tuesday 26th October, the City of Gosnells Council voted against the continued operation of a public prayer facility at The Australian Islamic College Thornlie- a facility which has been in place for nearly 20 years.Over 200 people from the Muslim Community and TV/print media gathered for the meeting which included the conditional approval for a new Library and classrooms for the Thornlie College.

Healthy Food

Fruits and vegetables have high amounts of water, fibre vitamins and minerals making it easy on your digestive system. Eating more raw than cooked vegetables are better for you because the more they are cooked the less nutrients there

are. Cook vegetables with as little water or fat as possible.

Meat and Seafood: Eat fresh meat and seafood with skin and fat removed. Also, eat less of red meat and eat more chicken and fish. This helps

in controlling cholesterol. Food Combinations: Do not eat fruit after any other food or on an empty stomach. Fruits take 20 minutes to digest whereas other foods take 1-2 hours. When eaten one after another fruits ferment in the stomach while waiting

for other foods to digest. This can cause bloating, belching and other non-desirable side effects. It is therefore recommended to eat fruits 20 minutes before your meal or 1-2 hours after your meal. Also, eating protein (dairy foods, fish) and carbohydrates (bread, pasta) with salads or raw or lightly steamed vegetables will help prevent or eliminate many common digestive problems.

Drinking Water: Drinking plain water and not fluids is best to keep the body healthy and functioning properly.

Flavored water(e.g. lemon juice added) requires digestion by the body causing extra work to be done by your system. To know how much water you need to stay healthy follow this simple formula: - divide your body weight by 3 the answer is the

number of ounces of plain water you need to drink daily to help your body stay properly hydrated Thus, by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, cutting fat in your meat and fish and drinking plenty of water you can maintain good health Insha Allah. Also, by eating foods at the right time and combining certain foods you can help to decrease or eliminate many digestive problems. Exercising regularly also helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Raw Fruits and Vegetables:

Guidelines For Healthy Eating.

*Flavor options:you can use coconut extract instead of vanilla extract,or ground cinnamon instead of cardamom.1)Mix all ingredients in a bowel ,cover let it rise for 1 hour up to 4 hours.

2)Deep fry it in hot oil using tablespoon to drop the dough,or by your hand, until browned ,drain on absorbent paper.

The following story is mentioned in Surah Qalam, Chapter 68 of the Holy Quran.

Once there was a wealthy and pious man. He had a big garden full of green trees laden with fruits. After the fruits were picked, this rightful man used to distribute some fruits among the poor who would gather at the garden every season to take their share.Allah liked this act of the man. By the grace of Allah the garden used to give rich harvest every season. Truly, one who spends for the sake of Allah gets the reward in the hereafter as well as in this life. This man had many sons who were not so pious as him. When their father died, they discussed a plan and said to each other that their father was not a wise man. He did not know how it was difficult to earn livelihood. They did not like the habit of distributing some of the fruits among the poor. They felt as if all their efforts would go to vain if the poor had some share. One of the sons had a concern. What will they tell the poor people when they gather to take their fruits next time? They thought over its implications, as they were worried about losing their prestige. However, they were not afraid of Allah’s wrath. One of them suggested removing all the fruits in the night and thus clearing the garden before dawn so that nobody could come and ask for his share. Everyone agreed to this suggestion. Since they were not even afraid of Allah, they forgot to say ‘Insha-Allah’, which means if Allah Wills, “...they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning, without saying Insha-Allah (‘if Allah Wills’)” (Verses 17-18). If a Muslim does not say Insha-Allah before doing something Allah may not fulfill his wish. But those who have no faith in Allah fail to remember Allah is all Powerful. He knows no bounds in His Governance. All the brothers went to sleep with a view to getting up early in the morning and gathering the ripe fruits. In the meantime, with the Will of Allah “...there passed by on the (garden) a visitation (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep.” (Verse 19)In the early morning, all of them got up and hurried up and “...called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, Saying: ‘Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits.’ So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today.” (Verses 21-24)As they were proceeding towards the garden, they were quite unaware that Allah had willed otherwise. Because the garden had become “black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins)” (Verse 20). So when they reached the garden, they said this was not their garden, and that they had strayed away from the right path to the garden. But when they saw there was no other way around, they were wonder struck! Soon they realized the situa-tion and yelled: “Verily, we have gone astray,” “Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!” The best among them said: “Did I not say to you ‘Why not glorify (Allah)’?” (Verses 26-28). He had been advising them earlier against this act, for he had said it is only Allah who would enhance their fruits if they continued to give away some of them in charity. All of them felt regretful over their misdeed. They turned, to one another, in reproach and said: “Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong. Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed!” All of them, then, sought Allah’s pardon and said: “We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter).” (Verses 31-32)It is very beloved to Allah that we share with the less fortunate whatever we have. While some of us only feel hungry during the month of Ramadan, there are many who are hungry everyday. Let us be more generous with our wealth and help all those who are in need. We will not lose anything by giving away some of our wealth, we will only gain.
