The purpose of these papers is to highlight four geographically distinct parts of Dundee. Theydetail the historical development of different parts of the city.

The transition of these areas demonstrates how man continually changes the built environment.These changes can often be linked to economic or social influences, and can be quite dramatic.The role of the physical town planner can be viewed as a positive intervention, which, through thetown planning process considers a wide range of views and opinions. These can range frompolitical input, in the form of local councillors and local communities to amenity bodies.

It is hoped that these papers will be of interest to those students who are keen to pursue a careerwithin the town planning profession.

Listed BuildingsBuildings of architectural and/or historical interest classified into three categories A, B andC(Statutory), by Historic Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Ministers.

Statutory ListCompilation of the details of Listed Buildings prepared by Historic Scotland and available to viewin the Planning and Transportation Department.

Site Planning BriefsA document produced by the Planning and Transportation Department to outline the form thatdevelopment should or would be accepted as appropriate on a particular site.

Types of Planning ApplicationFull Application : This is the most common type of submission used when it is intended

that all the information necessary is available to enable the authority toreach its decision.

Outline Application : Before going to the expense of preparing detailed drawings, an applicationfor Outline planning permission may be submitted to ascertain whetherthe development is acceptable in principle.

Listed Building Consent : Listed Building Consent is required for any works for the demolition ofa Listed Building or for its alteration or extension in any manner whichwould affect its character as a building of special architectural or historicinterest. The need to obtain Listed Building consent is a separateprocedure from the need to obtain planning permission.
