Bosch is in talks about possibly selling its brake business, a company official confirmed Thursday.And both its South Bend and St. Joseph locations are a part of that division.

"Bosch has begun reviewing alternatives for its North America Foundation Brake business," said Becky MacDonald, spokeswoman for Bosch. "And that includes discussions with a prospective buyer," about a possible sale, she said.

MacDonald noted, though, that no decisions have been made at this time."And there can be no assurances any decision will result in an agreement between the two companies," she said.

MacDonald said about 300 employees remain in the brake division at the South Bend plant and related Automotive Proving Grounds in New Carlisle. However, not all are in the foundation brake area. In addition, there are other employees in corporate and non-engineering roles in South Bend

Bosch in St. Joseph employs about 190 people, some of whom are in the foundation brake area.

MacDonald said she could not identify the prospective buyer or whether jobs at either facility might be affected.

"I can't speculate on any outcomes," she said.

The auto industry has been among the areas hardest hit by the recession. Sales started slumping more than a year ago as gas prices soared to more than $4 a gallon.

The bankruptcies of Chrysler and General Motors further decimated the industry.All of it has hurt suppliers like Bosch.

"There are several factors," MacDonald said.

"This is not a profitable business in some areas," she said, citing the overall brake business. "And the downturn of the economy has contributed to that lack of profitability.“

About 100 workers have been laid off from South Bend's Bosch facility in two separate moves in the past year. The latest in May involved 50 workers at the Bosch Chassis Systems and Full Brake office in South Bend and the related Automotive Proving Grounds office in New Carlisle.

As a Technical Buyer of Prototypes, equipment, and other engineering products, I had the opportunity to travel to many Bosch supplier locations in Mexico, Germany and all over the United States.

The best comparison I have of myself as a Project Manager is to describe myself as a CPU of a computer.

I process data as quickly as possible and route it to the necessary area for further action to maximize efficiency. I monitor as needed, but leave the action up to those who can best process the data.
