Sunday, July 3 @ 11 AM

We are called to be citizens of two different realms. As Americans, we are citizens of the United States of America; as Christians, we are citizens of the Kingdom of God. How do we live in both of these realms? How can we be good citizens in both areas of our lives? Does the Bible teach us anything on this question?

Jesus spoke so clearly on this very subject. The passage is found in Matthew 22:15-22. Jesus was confronted by a group who wanted to trap and entangle him. They tried to cause Jesus to stumble. Instead, he offered a declaration about the relationship of church and state which is a clear beacon for us today. He said, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”

On this weekend when our nation remembers and celebrates our independence and freedom, we need to hear again these words of Jesus. His words call us to good citizenship as Americans and as Christians. What can we learn from our Lord that will help us to be better Americans and better Christians? I will be talking about that in worship this Sunday morning.

Our worship this Sunday will be one combined worship service at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Our REACH worship will not meet this Sunday but will resume on July 10. Just as families often come together around a holiday such as Independence Day, it is appropriate for our church family to gather for one worship service together on this weekend. I hope that you will join us for Bible Study followed by worship in the Sanctuary.

Speaking of families coming together, it is time for my annual family vacation. For years we have gone to Garden City, South Carolina for two weeks of rest and renewal. As our two children, Emily and Andrew, have now grown and married and moved away, the beach vacation becomes the time that we get back together for a brief time. (Sort of like Combined Worship, I suppose.) I look forward to building sand castles with my grandchildren, Liam (3 ½) and Annabelle (1). I will miss you on July 10 and 17. In my absence you will be glad to hear from Dr. Gary Redding again as he preaches for us. I will return for worship with you on July 24.

With gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy in this great country, I invite you to worship this Sunday as we learn again what it means to “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” David Hull

Church Wide News & Opportunities

Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that it has been 25 years since I began working at FBC Augusta. My dear First Baptist Church members have become a part of my life. The time has flown by so quickly. I will always remember my

dear friends and co-workers during my time here. It has been a blessing and honor to serve the Lord and His people. Having worked with the pastors and ministers these 25 years has been a rewarding and fulfilling time in my life. Greg DeLoach, Rodger Murchison, and Tim Owings - thank you for your dedicated work here and always being kind and attentive to me. You have helped me become a better person and employee. Dr. Robinson, I will always remember you, as you baptized me and performed our wedding 48 years ago. The Lord opened the door here for me through a kind gentleman, Tom Dozier. He told me of the opening here and asked me to submit my resume, and the rest is history. A big thank you to my friends and co-workers: Shirley Lescantz, Lavinia Polatty, Susan Jones, Elizabeth Chao, Luci Worthington, Tim Spivey, Tommy Payne, Leah Galey, Paul & Claudia Moller and Lori McPherson, and to the other ministerial staff: Jim Walls, Kurt Wachtel, Patti Fowler, Chip Reeves, Josh Pinson, Kelly Garnto, and Jennifer Huston, I will miss all of you very much. All of you have been so kind and loving to me. Although I am not a member here, I was born and raised, baptized and married at First Baptist when it was located on Greene Street, so my roots began here with many wonderful memories. My husband and I are looking forward to retiring so we can begin a new journey in our lives as we travel and visit with our children and grandchildren that live out of town. May God continue to bless and keep my dear friends at FBC Augusta. Dede Maddox

Our Church in Prayer

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8... Being confident in this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6Suggested Prayer Points:* Give thanks to God for faithfully meeting your daily needs. * Confess that in your walk with Christ, you are not yet where you should be.* Express to God your desire to be taken “deeper into Christ” through Bible study and prayer.* Ask the Lord to give you a heart more like His for the needs of others.* Seek divine inspiration for new ways to “share with those in need.”* Pray God will continue to expand the outreach ministries of First Baptist.Contemplate: By God’s grace, we are no longer who we were; and Christ is developing us daily into who we eventually will become in Him!

Welcome to Cyndi BusbyAs many of you know, Dede Maddox is retiring effective July 15. Dede has been with the Church for 25 years, serving as Ministry Assistant to the Pastor. Her dedication and work ethic are unparalleled, and while we will miss her, we wish for her a happy and healthy retirement. With that said, I want to welcome Mrs. Cynthia Busby to the Administrative Assistant Staff here at FBC as the new Ministry Assistant to the Pastor. Cyndi’s previous employment was at Martinez Baptist Church. Her duties and experience at Martinez Baptist Church make her a good fit for us. Cyndi’s first day will be Wednesday, July 6. Please stop by and welcome her to First Baptist. - Tim Spivey

Our local prayer pager supplier was purchased by a national company. The company is out west and we are not getting the level of service we are accustomed to. Therefore, we are moving to a texting format. This is far more economical and gives us national coverage that was not affordable before. So, now you will text “733” to the person on the prayer list to let them know you have prayed for them. Thanks for your prayers and understanding as we transition to this new system. The effective date is July 1.

Student Ministry

Have you seen the green envelopes? When we donate money using them, that serves as one way we are able to support mission causes. Much of the money we collect through the green envelope stays right here in our community and is distributed to local organizations as well as to our own benevolence ministry. Our benevolence ministry helps meet needs for a number of families and individuals in Richmond and Columbia counties. Each week, we distribute groceries to 25-30 families, some of whom also receive assistance with rent or utilities. Each week it takes almost as many volunteers to help make this good work happen. Please consider putting an extra gift in the offering plate using a green envelope this Sunday. Yes, it is above your regular tithe or offering, but it is another way we reach out to and care for our community. Thank you for your love, prayers, service and support. - Chip Reeves
