Next came communications, with a video and voice platform in the network that delivered that same consistency of service across Europe. A massive amount of work was undertaken to deliver a simple and compelling proposition to our customers. To build out the communications platform at the rapid rate required, we needed a more powerful, flexible and expansive computing platform. This need drove the latest piece in the jigsaw: IaaS in the form of Interoute Virtual Data Centre (VDC).  Introducing a cloud computing platform directly into 67,000km of blindingly fast network changes the game.

We’re in 14 global locations, covering all of Europe (London x 2, Slough, Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Geneva, Paris, Madrid, Milan & Zurich) and worldwide (Hong Kong, Los Angeles & New York) with more zones being added this year. Computing and data can be built out and held in any of these zones via one interface or using our API.

Highly developed networking tools mean you can control exactly where that data does and doesn’t go, and you can move data around at will without getting charged a single penny, cent or nickel.

On Interoute VDC your applications fly. Our multiple locations mean the latency from our platform is typically a fraction of that of our competitors, who often choose only one or two zones per region. This means that you can place your data and compute power closer to your users and customers. This is important because it means that in some instances you can satisfy the same workload with a lot less resource, which in turn means less cost (hurrah). Our platform works on the premise of closely coupled network and computing, resulting in better application performance and less need for re-writes due to ‘loosely’ coupled cloud environments.

In this example, we show how building a multi-site synchronous mirrored SQL solution across three European data centres helps increase availability, ensure data protection and make server maintenance easy.

We’ve used high-safety mode synchronous replication with automatic failover using a witness server. Since we only needed two SQL nodes in the cluster, we used SQL standard edition. Deploying virtual machines in three VDC zones, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin delivers a truly distributed cloud architecture, with all three zones interconnected over an Interoute VPN. This helps ensure ultra-low latency across the cluster.

With Interoute VDC, you don’t just get a server ‘somewhere in the cloud.’ You get access to 14 interconnected global locations across our inherently secure MPLS VPN. This means geographic sensitivity and incredibly fast speeds.

SQL Mirroring betweenAmsterdam & Paris

In the Paris VDC zone, we paired the primary SQL server with a domain controller to create a redundant environment. In Amsterdam, we deployed a mirrored SQL server, a domain controller and a witness server to check which of the nodes in the cluster is active at any time. The reporting server in Berlin automatically queries the database in either Paris or Amsterdam, depending on which server is active.

To demonstrate the mirroring function, we logged into our Interoute VDC account and powered off the active server in Amsterdam. When we then queried the database, the systemautomatically delivered the results of the secondary server in the cluster: the Paris SQL server.

Ensuring data protection across our geographically diverse network is as simple as that. Not only does this system help avoid service interruptions but also delivers a fully redundant environment. And since we do not charge our customers for bandwidth transfers, our users can benefit from our network, without incurring extra fees.
