Secure information solutions:
The path to greener, more secure data centres at lower cost
Exploiting new technologies to gain data centre savings without compromising service
Capita Secure Information Solutions (as SunGard Public Sector UK) was awarded
the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2008for its continued development of public safety systems,
contributing to emergency services control room improvements and thereby saving lives. In the UK more than 50 million citizens
are served by agencies that rely onCapita Secure Information Solutions.

Capita Secure Information Solutions (Capita), with its UK based Campus Data Centres can deliver at least 35% savings* compared
with conventional Data Centres and still meet all these needs…
The challenge
There is unprecedented pressure on all public sector organisations to cut spending but services, many dependent upon ICT, have to be maintained. It is widely recognised that to reconcile these conflicting requirements new ways must be found to provide these services rather than resorting to a series of incremental cuts to an established model.
Technologies are changing – “Cloud Computing” is the promise but the unique needs of the UK public sector means that many approaches enjoyed by the private sector cannot be exploited.
“Staff and citizens depend on us”
Costs must be cut BUT
“We don’t have the capital”
The data centre needs a refresh BUT
“Our current facilities are power hungry”
We want to be green and we must avoid penalties BUT
“In practise it is very difficult to manage”
Sharing is an option BUT
“It must be secure and in the UK”
Third party hosting is one way forward BUT

NO “BUTs”
The financial case for the Campus Data Centre is compelling
35% lower costs* than conventional data centresBuilt on inherently secure sites using the latest clean technology and on an unsurpassed scale, the Campus Data Centre sets new standards in cost effectiveness without compromising security availability or the environment. Based in the UK, with security endorsed to the highest levels, these facilities meet the unique requirements of the public sector.
5* Based upon 10 year total cost of ownership, conventional
data centre PUE 1.8, electricity costs of 10p/kwh
The Campus slashes data centre costs
Savings
■ Due to low energy charges, power usage alone can be up to 50% less than conventional Data Centres
■ Economies of scale reduce costs even further
Sustainability
■ Usually there is a cost to being green – Capita’s data centres comply and save money
■ Cutting consumption on this scale enables you to minimise carbon penalties
Security & availability
■ A choice of security options means you only pay for what’s needed
■ A choice of resilience on- site, reduces the need for expensive off- site backup

The unique advantages of the Campus Approach
Modular construction for flexibilityThe Data Centres are built on a modular basis on a secure campus so differing levels of security and resilience can be accommodated on a single site, to meet the requirements of the users.
Inherent security and redundancyBuilt on, and surrounded by former MoD land, the facilities are endorsed to the highest levels of physical security. Close proximity to the dual source of national grid infrastructure with multiple, high capacity feeds which ensures continuous power supply.
Scalability and economyBased in rural locations away from major conurbations means that growth is, effectively, unlimited. A phased approach to add modules over time will ensure ongoing availability of space. Operating on this scale delivers savings in supply and service contracts that are passed on to users.
CO2 footprint cut by 50%
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is the standard coefficient of efficiency for data centres and relates the total energy used, to that actually consumed by the IT equipment that operates the secure data centre facility. Conventional data centres
range between 2.2 and 2.8 but the Campus Data Centres (due to their advanced cooling and other features) have a
PUE of 1.2 resulting in a carbon footprint that is almost half the industry norm.

Meeting all the standards:
Comprehensive security regime
throughout the site with the highest
levels endorsed by CESG to IL6
available on an “as required” basis
Enhanced physical security
complemented with a risk
management system in compliance
with ISO 27001 (Information Security
Management) and JSP 440 (Controls)
Accredited to BS 25999
Tier III high availability
All modules built with 100%
recyclable materials and local sourcing
to produce a building envelope that
combines a 65 year design programme
with a 1 hour fire rating
Accredited to ISO 14001
Environmental Management Systems
Meeting differing, evolving needs on a “just enough” basis

The Force views that value for money has been successfully delivered in the first year of service.
The Force has realised its aspiration of price predictability for this set of services.
Mike Walton, Head of ICT, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
We are seeing year on year reductions in the cost of running our network, and it is performing at faster speeds, with better, more consistent uptimes – which all makes for a better all round
quality experience for our users. And, of course, the strategic investments we have made in the system and the infrastructure will future proof our growth in the years ahead.
Roger Fowles, Corporate Technology Manager, London Borough of Lewisham
Lewisham Borough Council reduced their budget by 40% with Capita’s aid, saving £1.5m per year
Since 2006 Capita has been working in partnership with Lewisham to improve the resilience and capabilities of the Council’s infrastructure.
A roadmap has been developed and followed that progressively implements new infrastructure delivering a steady stream of savings.
The proposition – in summary
The Campus Data Centre from Capita sets new standards in data centre cost effectiveness and is specifically engineered to meet UK public sector needs.
It delivers:
avings – at least 35%* can be expected relative to traditional data centres
ustainability – The CO2 footprint is 50% of conventional data centres
ecurity – Inherent security and a UK base means it meets the most stringent public sector demands
afe pair of hands – Capita can provide services on a “just enough” basis to make sure you gain cost savings
