Executive Summery of My Internship Experience
My internship was at The Licking County Health Department in Newark, Ohio.
During my internship I was able to learn many new things and gain lots of experience
in areas I was unfamiliar with. In this summery I will describe what I experienced,
what I worked on, and the skills I have acquired during the internship semester.
I have gained a great deal of experience during my internship in areas of
which I am not used to being in. I was able to gain skills and experience in different
types of work that I have never been in before. During my internship I worked
mostly with Tabitha Haynes at the Licking County Health Department. Tabitha is the
Public Information Officer at the Health department and I have learned many things
from her. I am currently in the medical field as an X-ray technologist and I am looking
to advance my status by becoming a manager. Working with a public information
officer has given me a different perspective and different skills that I would
otherwise not have. I believe this internship has helped me see what areas I am
strong in and what areas I need to work on.
The first thing I started to work on after I received a tour, identification badge,
and introduction to all the staff was writing to the public. I conducted a letter to send
out to Licking County that asked for kind donations to The Licking County Health
Department’s Public Health Partnership charity. The letter is listed bellow. The next
task I was given was to write a press release to inform the public about a new mini-
grant received by the Licking County Health Department. I did not know at the time
that I would be composing many press releases for the rest of my internship. These
tasks were something very new to me because I had never written a press release or

anything sent out to the public. The style of writing is completely different from what
I was used to and it truly has been a learning experience. Below are parts of only
some of the press releases I created.

I had the privilege of working with computers everyday, which included word,
excel, power point, and many design websites such as Canva. When I was given a
project, Tabitha would give me the instructions and keep it open to my own
creativity. I was given the tasks of creating a couple different advertisements that
would be in magazines, newspapers, Facebook, signs, or twitter. I also had to create
some other projects such as three certificates of completion for daycare centers that

completed an Infant safe sleep training session with the Licking County Health
Department’s health educators. . Bellow are some of my creations.

A coupe of projects that were on going projects in which I worked on
throughout the whole internship is entering volunteers information and licensures
into a government database so that they may be contacted in the case of a local crisis.
I had to check to be sure individuals who volunteered were licensed to practice
healthcare such as nurse care or being a doctor. I entered more than 200 individuals
and checked their licenses. This helped me gain responsibility and the know how to
check licenses. Since I want to become a healthcare manager, I will need to check
employee licenses to insure they can practice medicine so this experience has been
beneficial. Over my internship period I also did lots of mailing projects where I would
stuff, create labels, and then put the labels correctly on the mail for different
departments. This taught me how to use excel more efficiently and teamwork
working with many different employees in the department.
During my internship I attended many meetings. These meetings ranged from
tabletop meetings for crisis planning, to event planning meetings. The tabletop
meetings I was a part of were to prepare the local organizations like the health
department and hospital for a crisis such as a disease break out. The health
department and Licking County Hospital worked together to run through the steps
they would take to create a smooth running environment and keep people calm.
These meetings were very interesting because each person has a different duty and it
was good to see it all come together and to know the community would be taken care
of in a case of a disaster. I also attended event-planning meetings. I learned the
structure of the meetings and what it takes to create an affective meeting. At the

event planning meetings we planned out how the annual River Round up event
would be funded, supervised, and arranged. This event is a volunteer event from the
community and they take groups of community volunteers down certain sections of
the river cleaning up trash and debris. I learned quickly it was not as easy as it
sounds to plan large events.
Overall this internship has been a positive learning experience. I have learned
many things about public relations, communication, interaction, design, media,
business operation, and organization. I believe all of the things I have learned and
experienced will help me in the near future.
