Actually, we should use the multiple ‘masters” in the title of this preface, borrowed from the musical Les Misérables for the occasion. Because we are talking to two ‘masters” , namely Frank Boers, managing direc-tor of BOAL Systems and Leo van der Lans, chairman of FC ‘s-Gravenzande. They lead the two companies that come together in the BOAL International U14 Tournament.

Companies? Isn’t FC ‘s-Gravenzande a club? Indeed it is, but one that can easily match a company where pro-fessionalism is concerned. Frank Boers, whose company is the main sponsor of the tournament, has recogni-sed that a long time ago already and greatly appreciates it. He knows from experience that things are much less well arranged at many other sports clubs.

Leo van der Lans, chairman for 15 years already, knows this from his own experience. He refers to the impor-tant steps the club made in terms of professionalism at the time of the merger in 2010. Those steps led to a club with more than 1600 members, with several people in full time employment and with a radiation that goes beyond ‘s-Gravenzande, Westland and even the Netherlands nowadays.

BOAL Systems also has great presence. Worldwide nowadays. When he started, Frank found a company with 90% of its revenue in the Netherlands. Today this percentage applies to business in countries all over the world, albeit still mainly through Dutch partners. Countries where the knowledge and expertise from Westland is highly valued and wanted. Africa, Asia, Equador …. Westlanders are everywhere.

BOAL Systems and FC ‘s-Gravenzande have many similarities. Their roots in Westland, the enormous deve-lopment in recent years and their expectations for further growth in the future. This includes the inevitable challenges that come with this: employees, facilities, financing and more.

Talking to these two “masters” is like the proverbial “In for a penny ……” They can’t stop talking about com-pany, club, region and industry. With the BOAL International U14 Tournament their pride reaches its peak.

THE FOURTH EDITION OF THE BOAL INTERNATIONAL U14 TOURNAMENT IS HERE!

The organisation warmly welcomes you to our “Juliana Sportpark” for the BOAL International U14 Tournament. Players, referees, management, fans and spectators, sponsors and volunteers …… several thousands of peop-le will be at our football ground for these three days.

Since the moment the awards ceremony of last year’s edition ended, we have been working hard to arrange the 4th edition of this appealing event. The organisation is carried out by a committee consisting of Jan van der Deijl, Leo de Haan, Michiel van den Berg, Cees Molenaar, Eric Moraal, Ton v.d. Water and Theo Doelman.

Together with Eric Cornelisse of Joer International, who especially builds and maintains the international contacts, the main component of the tournament is arranged: the participating teams. There are more than enough candidates, but it is important to find the right balance between Dutch clubs and teams from abroad, in order to build an engaging field of participants.. We are of the opinion that we have succeeded very well in doing this once again this year.

Of course many more things need to be arranged. For instance, thinking of places where the players and ma-nagement of the teams will spend the night. This year no less than 58 host families for as many as 126 players play a special role in this element. More about host families can be found further on in this magazine.

Catering is another important part which requires a lot of preparation. Anyone that visits the “Juliana Sport-park” during these three days, regardless whether as a participant, volunteer, referee, sponsor or spectator, they all need to be able to get something to drink and eat at the right times.

And what to think about (assistant) referees? We are the only tournament of its kind that supplies all matches with a fully neutral arbitrary trio. All matches, that is no less than 80, which means we need dozens of “men in black” .

We have mentioned our volunteers earlier already. During these three days an amazing number of 120 of them are helping in many different ways to make the event a success. Where would we be without them?

Finally, our sponsors are of the utmost importance. With BOAL Systems in the lead as our main sponsor (please also see the interview with managing director Frank Boers further on in this magazine), followed by a long list of companies that either sponsor a team or support the tournament financially in another way.

BOAL TOURNAMENT SUPPORTS “JULIANA KINDERZIEKENHUIS”

The BOAL International U14 Tournament is organised for very healthy kids. Unfortunately it is not possible for every kid to participate. The “Juliana Kinderziekenhuis” (childrens’ hospital) in the Hague focuses on those boys and girls that unfortunately are less healthy.

During the tournament, the organisation receives nice gadgets from many of the participating teams. Last year, the initiative was born to pass on some of these gifts to the hospital, which appreciated this very much. One thing lead to another, we have now decided to make the support to the “Juliana Kinderziekenhuis” by BOAL Systems and FC ‘s-Gravenzande a continuing effort. During and after the tournament we try to fulfill a number of wishes of the children, like football tables, game computers, a bluetooth speaker for the teena-gers’ room and more toys.

The “Juliana Kinderziekenhuis” opened its doors in 1885 and has since then developed into a child orien-ted hospital where the parents are closely involved in the treatments. As the only non-academic childrens’ hospital in the country, it now has a huge polyclinic and 90 clinical beds spread over three nursing depart-ments. Besides that it has an ultramodern neonatologi-cal unit, it’s own operating facilities and daycare. The special emergency department for children is unique in the region.

The strength of the “Juliana Kinderziekenhuis” is that all specialists are together under one roof, which op-timises the multidisciplinary care. Because of that, the hospital has a strong regional role. It has been part of the “Haga Ziekenhuis” since 2004. ADO DEN HAAG “Alles Door Oefening” from the Royal Residence, The Hague, has played on the highest level since it was introduced in most years, playing most years in the “eredivisie”. Only in two periods, the club had to play one level lower, in the 1st division. This year however, the storks are up for their tenth consecutive season amongst the “creme de la creme” of Dutch football. Many youth players from Westland entered into profes-sional football in the green and yellow of ADO.

AJAX AFC Ajax from Amsterdam is the most successful club in Dutch football. 33x national championships, 18x KNVB cups, 8x Dutch supercups, 6 European cups, 3 European supercups and 2x worldcup winners……. it’s an impressive list. Ajax is traditionally renowned for its education of youth players. It is, of course, the club of the player that many see as the best football player in the world ever: Johan Cruijff, who passed away last year. The U14 team is of course part of the famous youth education program.

AZ The club with probably the shortest name in the world was founded in 1967 and was called AZ’67 until 1986. The first and last letter of the alphabet in this case are short for Alkmaar Zaanstreek, the city and region where AZ is located. The club won the natonal championship twice (1981, 2009) and seized the KNVB cup four times (1978, 2001,2002, 2013). The city of Alkmaar is not only known for AZ, but also for its cheese market.

BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN The “Vicekusen”, as the nickname of this club reads, have played in the Bundesliga, the highest level in Germany, uninterrupted since 1979. It almost always ends in the top 5, but was never able to win the national championship. They did win the UEFA cup in 1988 and the German cup in 1993. Bayer’04 Leverkusen is one of the teams that has been present at the BOAL Internatio-nal U14 tournament in all editions.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND On its website BVB describes itself as follows:: “Borus-sia Dortmund stands for intensity, authenticity, bonding and ambition. Everything with us is characterised by an intense effect. Our stadium is the epicenter, where the concentrated energy, which is part of BVB, discharges itself. In the heart of our fans we have a firm place, their unconditional loyalty has been carrying us through good and bad times for over 100 years. We have the abso-lute will to give them something back. Through sporti-ve success and by the promise that we remain as we have always been: straight, open, combative and firmly grounded in the Dortmund soil..”

IF BROMMAPOJKARNA “The Bromma Boys” from Stockholm are renowned for their youth education program. John Guidetti, nowadays a player of Celta de Vigo, is originally a “Bromma Boy”. He only played two matches in Brommapojkarna 1 be-fore being picked up by Manchester City. In the season 2011-2012 he was on loan to Feyenoord. Goalkeeper Kri-stoffer Nordfeldt of Swansea City and formerly sc Hee-renveen was also formed by Brommapojkarna. Bromma was part of the first edition of the tournament and now returns for its second participation in ‘s-Gravenzande.

BRøNDBY IF Since its foundation in 1964 Brøndby IF has developed into one of the top teams in Denmark. They have been playing on the highest level since 1981 and is the most successful club of the country. The way up started with making Per Bjerregaard chairman, who appointed Finn Laudrup (father of Michael and Brian) as player-coach. Brøndby reached its first national championship in 1981, after which many succes followed.

CHELSEA FC The Blues were founded in 1905 and have played in the Premier League since 1990. Chelsea is one of the few European top teams, together with Manchester Uni-ted, Ajax, Juventus en Bayern München, that managed to win all three European competitions ((Europacup I / UEFA Champions League, Europacup II, and UEFA Cup / UEFA Europa League). The Londoners have a co-opera-tion with Vitesse, which regularly leads to players being placed in Arnhem temporarily to gain experience.

CLUB BRUGGE On its website, “Club” describes itself as follows: “Club Brugge is more than a football team. CONSADOLE SAPPORO Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo is one of the older foot-ball clubs in Japan, founded as Toshiba SC in 1935 as the company team of Toshiba in Kawasaki. For a long time it played at lower levels, until its promotion in 1989 to the Japan Soccer League, the predecessor of the J-League. In 1995 the club separated from Toshiba, moved to Sapporo on the Hokkaido island and adjusted its name accordingly to Consadole Hokkaido Sapporo. Consadole stands for “ the people of Hokkaido” . Striking detail: The stadium of the club has a moveable pitch, just like the Gelredome in Arnhem.

EVERTON FC With 1878 as the year of foundation, this is the oldest club in the tournament. The team of manager Ronald Koeman and as of next season, also player Davy Klaas-sen has been fighting at the highest level since 1962 for the hegemony in Liverpool in the “Merseyside Derby” , the clash between blue and red, between Everton and Liverpool. This match is alternately played at Goodis-on Park (Everton) and Anfield (Liverpool), two stadiums which are just a mile apart, separated only by Stanley Park.

FEYENOORD The club of “Zuid” (South) and of “actions rather than words. This is the club of Wim van Hanegem and Coen Moulijn. The club that managed to win the national title for the first time since 1999 last year, which led to tremendous joy with the fans and a celebration with 150.000 partying people (or were there even more?). The club also with the largest and most loyal fan base and the most popular football stadium in the Nether-lands. Feyenoord is one of the clubs that has taken part in all editions of the BOAL International U14 Tournament until now.

FC ‘s-GRAVENZANDE As the organising club it is the only non-professional team in the tournament. It can however proudly refer to a youth education program which would not appe-ar negatively in professional surroundings. It was not by chance that it was nominated for the Rinus Michels Award for best education program last year. The result of this program is that the number of self-trained play-ers in the selection increases year by year and the first team, that reached the championship in the 1st class and with that a promotion to the Hoofdklasse last year, was mainly made up of “own boys”. Chances are that several players from the team in this tournament will be part of the first team in a few years as well.

PSV The Philips Sport Vereniging from Eindhoven, which had to leave the national championship to Feyenoord last year, following two consecutive titles, completes the national top three in this tournament. PSV wants to be a serious candidate for the national every year, has Cham-pions league ambitions and strives for a professional top sport atmosphere on and around the pitch.The most important goal of PSV’s youth training pro-gram is the development of individual talent. The result should be to “deliver” two new players to the selection on average per year.

SWINDON TOWN FC “The Robins” played in League One, the third level in English football, but could not prevent having to step down one level in the last season. Founded in 1881 (or was it 1879 after all) the club exists almost as long as Everton. Swindon Town moved into professional foot-ball as early as 1894 ,an amazing date compared to Dutch football, where this was’nt introduced until 1956. Swindon Town put down an excellent performance in last years edition of the BOAL International U14 Tourna-ment by ending 7th .

Vfl WOLFSBURG Vfl Wolfsburg was founded immediately after WW II and therefor celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2015. Since 1997, the “greens” have been pllaying in the Bundesli-ga. Their one time top performance was in 2009, when they won the national title. During last season the Dutch players Riechedly Bazoer and Jeffrey Bruma were part of the Wolfsburg team. . “Die Wolfe” made their debut in the BOAL International U14 Tournament in 2016 with a 12th place. The club of Volkswagen will be eager to improve on that result this year.

126 players from 7 teams will spend two nights with a host family during the 4th edition of the BOAL Interna-tional U14 Tournament. Besides a great experience for both the families and the boys, this brings the organi-sation a substantial advantage in the tournament budget.

What gets families to bring some total strangers, often from abroad, into their homes? Sonja Langenberg en Louis Zuidgeest live and breath football anyway, with lots of experience both on (Louis, 10 years in the first team of RKSVM) and off (both, als volunteers) the pitch. Two years ago, they were the last to be convinced to help out and welcomed two boys from Bayer ‘04 Leverkusen into their home. Since then it has become a natural thing, because the experience was very positive. They especially commend the high level of disci-pline the young talents show. Their favourite guests are from the club from Rotterdam. Huh? Can’t they just go home every evening? Well no, because these players come from all over the country. Besides that, the Feyenoord management chooses to let them stay at host families on purpose, because it helps them improve their social skills.

When the boys enter their temporary home for the first time on Friday evening, just about the first thing they ask is: “What is the wifi code?”. So you better have wifi in your home, because after a tiring day they do like to be able to communicate with their homefront. Playstation also works well by the way!

A very special host family is the one from Yolanda Doornbos. A few years ago she read about the search for host families and reacted spontaneously. So why is she special? Well, Yolanda, with her 13-year old son (who is a big fan of Borussia Dortmund), lives in Honselersdijk and did not have any ties whatsoever with FC ‘s-Gravenzande. But it seemed an interesting challenge to host a few boys from abroad for a few nights. Her house is big enough for that and as a result she offers a bed to no less than 4 boys every year. Guess what? Their club colours are yellow and black!

After a series of matches, the guests apparently have enough energy left for special activities on the Satur-day evening. Going to the beach is a logical favourite. Hans van der Struif, host parent from day one, tells about the barbeque that some host families organise together. The international group finds its way to the burgers, schaschlicks and “sateetjes” in an amazing unified way. To return to “battle” the next day to go for the tournament win full force. ......

So why would you consider being a host family? Because it is an exciting challenge!

FC ‘s-Gravenzande is very much in the spotlight because of the achievements of its 1st team. This involves quite some money and radiates to the rest of the club, also its youth. This leading tournament creates just as much radiation however. I value the fact that through this the youth gets direct attention and financial resources as well. Therefore, Pieta and I gladly contribute our part. Perhaps it also leads to some extra business for Florista by Pieta. Cor van Trigt

Youth are the future. Schouten Zekerheid finds it important for children to develop and therefor supports many initiatives where youth is involved. In sports, for example the youth at Feyenoord, but also socially, for example at the Sophia Children’s hospital. I played football in the ’s Gravenzande youth, so I know what a fantastic club it is. 1. The tournament will be played according to the rules of the KNVB.

2. The tournament is open to players born on or after 01-01-2004, only players of FC ‘s-Gravenzande born

on or after 01-01-2003 are allowed to take part as well.

3. During the tournament, the standard rules apply regarding substitutes per match. This means five players

or four players and one goalkeeper.

4. Matches will be lead by KNVB referees.

5. Each referee is assisted by two neutral, experienced assistant referees during the tournament.

6. Before the tournament, each club has to hand over a list at the secretariat mentioning the following data

of their players.:

- Surname

- First name (s)

- Date of birth

- Shirt number of every player.

7. Players must play with the same shirt number during the whole tournament. This is because of the electi-

on of the best player of the tournament.

8. The match duration is 2 x 15 minutes.

9. Each team is required to start the game in time. If a team shows up five or more minutes after the speci-

fied time, the opponent will be announced as the winner with a score of 3-0.

10. The first mentioned club in the schedule plays in the original club outfit.

11. The preliminary round will be played in four groups of four teams. They play a half competion. After the

half competion they play further confirm the ‘knock out system’.

- The numbers 1 up to and including 4 of these groups will play for the 1st - 8th place.

- The numbers 5 up to and including 8 of these groups will play for the 9th -16th place.

12. If the results of two or more teams are the same in the group the goal difference is determinative. If this is

also equal, then the team that has scored the most goals is the winner. If this is also the same, there are

penalties taken by five different players. If there is still no decision, the other players of the team will take

the penalties alternately until a decision has been made.

13. When a player gets his third yellow card, he is not allowed to play the next match.

14. If a red card is shown directly by the referee to a player, that player must leave the match and can’t play

this match as well as the next match anymore.

15. A “Fair Play Cup ‘ is awarded. The designated referees will determine the winner of this prize.

16. For the best player and best goalkeeper of the tournament prizes are available. An independent commit-

tee will determine the winner.

17. In all cases where these regulations can’t be used, the tournament committee will decide.
