The Boston Marathon has symbolized honor and perse-verance for people from all over the world since 1897.But within sight of the finish line on April 15, 2013, terror-ists detonated two homemade bombs. Four peoplewere killed, and 282 were injured. Everyone presentand all the people who were watching on televisionwere changed, with that horrible moment and thetense days that followed etched forever in their minds.Offers of support for the victims flooded in, and visitorsfrom all over the world came to the scene to mourn, express sympathy, and pray for the recovery of the victims. Memorials spontaneously appeared on thesidewalks near the sites of the bombings, just like theydid in New York City after 9/11: T-shirts, caps, and run-ning shoes with personal messages written on them, as well as flowers, banners, artwork, flags, and stuffedanimals. As weeks passed, the scattered sidewalk memorials grew so large they had to be relocated tothe nearby park at Copley Square. The consolidatedmonument continued to grow, an expression of thedeep impact this tragedy had on the city of Bostonand its friends. Sadly but inevitably, with fragile itemsleft outdoors unprotected in the rain and sun, the memorials began to deteriorate. The photos in thisbook capture the memorial at its peak, a few weeksbefore the artifacts were removed for preservation by the Boston Archives. Suitable for all members of the family, the images show us the care and love thatwent into every message that was left at the memorialsite. They also preserve an important moment in history, when horror transitioned into healing and Boston's natural sense of optimism reasserted itself. They com-memorate the birth of the spirit of "Boston Strong."

Douglas Potoksky got his start as a photographer in music magazines such as Acoustic Guitar, Elmore,Mojo, and Rolling Stone. His photos of the street memorials at Ground Zero after the 9/11 tragedy are collected in American Heart. He lives in Whately, Massachusetts.

For readers who have a dream, want a dream, or have lost a dream, this trailblazing self-manage-ment tool masterfully weaves together technology,real-life stories, self-reflection, and solid principles inorder to steer dreaming into doing. Based ona spoken message series called Imagine, whichwas addressed to the congregation at the Cathe-dral of Faith in San Jose, California, Pastor Ken Fore-man realized the hunger people have to discoverGod’s dream for their own lives and to live themout; this book is the roadmap to accomplishing thatgoal. Inspiring others to dream big with unimagin-able results—in their personal lives, professionallives, and in their communities—the book takesreaders on a journey as individualized as them-selves with beautifully pragmatic instruction, acknowledging the many obstacles and pitfallsthat may impede one’s vision. Once readers under-stand that pitfalls are part of the journey, and notjust a hindrance, the dream continues.

“Image is the word inside of Imagine . . . and withthis extraordinary book, Pastor Ken helps us seethat we are all created in the ‘image’ of God; andtherefore to imagine is to see, through God’simage, a dream so big for our lives that it can onlybe attained through the help of our Creator.Through his masterful visual ministry, Ken’s inner GPSnavigates how life-changing dreams were pur-posefully given to history’s great ‘imagineers’; start-ing with Joseph from Genesis and up to today‘smost influential innovators, to remind us of the trans-formative power that comes when you surrender toGod’s dream for your life.” —David Pack,

Major lifestyle changes are almost alwaysprompted by a “wellness wake-up call” that comesin one form or another. The idea behind this book is that wellness wake-up calls don’t have to be organic moments inspired, perhaps, by an upcom-ing class reunion. They can be intentional. With few exceptions, the human body is a self-healing organism that would function perfectly whengiven the things it needs, such as nutrition, exer-cise, and social and spiritual food. Most of the time, however, life gets in the way. The good news isthat everyone has the chance to make right withphysical, emotional, and spiritual needs and to livein a way that allows the body to function better. For those headed in the wrong direction, inaction is a choice. Reversing downward spirals to get lifeback on track requires each person to make achoice to live differently. The scenarios presentedat the beginning of each chapter in the book actas simple barometers to reveal one’s level of well-ness or highlight potential problems in specific well-ness areas—from diet to flexibility, to spirituality and beyond. The results of each scenario intend to guide and motivate everyone to make betterchoices about health and lead to possiblechanges in lifestyle. Each chapter is full of docu-mented data and ideas for exercises, activities, or simple lifestyle changes to support wellness.

In this inspirational discourse, scholar Sarah Widerand Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda celebrate thegreat spiritual and literary figures, East and West, who have inspired their own work as educators, poets, and peace builders, including both the men and the women of the American Renais-sance. They reserve their highest praise, though, for the lesser-known influences, especially teachersand mothers, whose humble, compassionate ac-tions provide the truest foundation for the realiza-tion of ever-greater peace. Ultimately, the book is a tribute to the bonds that give life meaning. Thesebonds are the ones built between friends and fam-ily; those who teach and those we might learnfrom; with the great thinkers of the past who live on in books, poetry, and art; with nature; and mostof all with the best version of ourselves.

The third book of the series is meant for children betweenthe ages of 10 and 12.

Michael Levin, MD, and Charan Langton, MS

Everyone thinks kids hate math. But the truth is, kids don’t hate math—they hate worksheets! Writing down equations takes fine motor skills that young children haven’t yet developed, makingthe process of learning math difficult and tedious. Math done mentally, or verbal math, makesmath fun. Children see math problems as a game and a challenge. In the second editionsof these pioneering educational bestsellers, handwriting is removed from math problems to helpchildren cement fundamental mathematical skills so that they may solve problems without havingto do any writing at all. Developed as a supplement to traditional math education, the lessons arecompletely comprehensive, step-by-step, and leave no area undone.

Michael Levin, MD, is a physician specializing in behavioral and learning problems in young children.Charan Langton, MS, is an engineer. She writes a blog at www.complextoreal.com. They are the authors of Big Words for Little Kids and The Reading Lesson. They both live in San Ramon, California.
