President’s Message Greetings Members and Friends, In August I attended the President’s Lead- ership Summit in Manhattan Beach. Their motto was “Working as One, Investing in Dreams.” The message was to focus on our Dream programs. Soroptimist International of the Ameri- cas (SIA) conducted research that showed there are 9.6 million women who are heads of house- hold living in poverty around the world and 2.1 million here in the United States. Our Live Your Dream program helps these women improve their education and offers them the best chance to improve their lives and the lives of their children. Through this program, in the fiscal year 2015-2016, $1.9 million in education grants were disbursed to 1,355 women in across 20 countries and territories. 95 percent of the Live Your Dream recipients said that the program increased their self-esteem and 82 percent completed their education and increased their standard of living. SIA’s research also found that there are 10.2 million girls living in poverty around the world and 1.5 million of them are in the United States. Our Dream It, Be It program seeks to support girls who do not have access to the resources or information they need to pursue their career goals. We are specifically trying to reach disadvantaged girls who face additional obstacles including poverty, unstable home lives, living in foster care, or are teen mothers. This program had 8,634 girls participate in the fiscal year 2015-2016 across 14 countries. 90 per- cent of them reported that they felt more confident about their future success and 87 percent felt more prepared to pursue their career goals. So, as you can see there are many more women and girls around the world that need our help. In order to reach our Big Goal of “Invest in the Dreams of Women and Girls through Access to Educa- tion” we must attract more members, attract more financial support, gain more recognition and focus on our Dream programs. Club Chatter Brooke Stephens took a quick run over to Bakersfield to deliver her niece Becky O’Rork to the connecting train to Sacra-mento. Tried to experience Buck Owen’s Crystal Palace only to learn they offer a Sun-

day Brunch and then they are “outta here”. Not to fear, dis-covered Benji’s, a top of the line Basque restaurant with an innocent exterior. Fabulous food, great service and roll-off carts out to the car (just kidding!). Made it back to Santa Barbara for her annual mammogram (did you get yours?) with 3 minutes to spare. Whew! Debbie Gohlke and hubby Bill spent a few days in historic Pacific Grove, Butterfly Capitol of the World. Bill enjoyed 52-holes of golf in two days while Debbie drove the cart and tended the flag. They also had some good food at local eateries, enjoyed a beautiful sunset, and toured the historic lighthouse. Need to go back during monarch butterfly sea-son. Marissa Vanderwyck is proud to announce that her niece, Justine, gave birth to a baby girl on Au-gust 16.. Marissa's great-niece's name is Athena Nyoto (her mid-dle name is a character from Star Wars of which Justine and her husband are huge fans of) and she weighed 8 lbs. 6 ozs. 21 3/4 inches long. Marissa can't wait to baby sit!

Friendship Potluck

September 29, 2017 Submitted by Dale Belcher

Please save the evening of Friday, Sep 29th. For those of you who have met Sue and Rob Pritt over the years, this is a chance to catch up with them. For those of you who don’t know them, it is a chance to meet and visit with a very interesting couple from England (they actually spend half their time in South Africa now that they are both retired. Sue is a long time Soroptimist (England and S Africa) and has visited our club several times over the years. Pot luck will be hosted at Pam Cady’s home. Details to fol-low.

Program Speaker Submitted by Katie Walsh

Carol Leish, MA, disability consultant, motivational speaker, and writer will be our program speaker on September 20. Carol Leish has over 15 years experience in teaching and working with social service agencies. Her programs offer the audience a unique insight to the world of the physically, mentally, and learning challenged person, because she is speaking from her own personal experiences. As a child, Leish sustained speech and vision disabilities as the result of an auto accident. Instead of dwelling on her disabilities, she chose to focus on her abilities and strengths. Leish graduated from CSU, San Bernadino, earning her Masters degree in Education and Counseling. She has taught in both San Bernardino and Ventura counties and has worked for a variety of non-profit organizations. Leish is a contributing writer to the Ventura County Star for issues related to the physically, emotionally, and learning challenged and to the Ventura Breeze for issues related to seniors. Leish realized the importance of educating adults and youth to become more accepting of others, and started her Call Me Capablein-service presentations, and developed the Call Me Capable Game

TM. She inspires her audiences with her humor, dry wit, and genuineness. She invites her audiences to join her on her personal journey of coping with visual, coordination, speech, and depression challenges. She enlightens people by focusing on the strengths that those with challenges have. She makes us realize that we are all more similar than different.

International Literacy Day will be celebrated across the world under the theme of ‘Literacy in a Digital World’. On September, 7-8, 2017 a special two-day event will be organized at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris, with the overall aim to look at what kind of literacy skills people need to navigate increasingly digitally-mediated societies, and to explore effective literacy policies and programs that can leverage the opportunities that the digital world pro-vides.

International President’s Post

Dear Soroptimists around the world, I write this from the World Water Week, Stockholm, where all 3,100 participants are following news of the terrible situation with heavy rain and storms in Texas and Louisi-ana in the USA and in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, South-Asia and more. My sympathy goes out to all the families and friends affected by these horrific natural disasters. I know Soropti-mists will provide support wherever possible. Sadly, the rains and flooding do not seem to be over yet. My thoughts are with you all. It seems ironic that we are here in Stockholm dis-cussing water scarcity, whilst water in abundance is mean-while destroying lives, livelihoods, and homes on opposite sides of the globe. Yet addressing all water issues, including preventing floods and reducing their impact, is part of what the water experts gathered here see as their joint task. My warm regards and Soroptimist greetings, Mariet Verhoef-Cohen President Soroptimist International
