PresentationPrésentation

Euskadi (Basque Country) with its three historical territories, Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia and Alava, is a highly diverse world, offering stark contrasts in its three modern, cosmopolitan capitals, which have transformed themselves and adapted to changing times while retaining their personality. They are three parts of a whole, complementing one another, and offering much in the line of culture, gastronomy and shopping in a pleasant and friendly urban environment.

The exceptional nature of this land cannot be understood without the Bay of Biscay which has molded the geography of Euskadi at will, and forged its people’s personality. A trip along its coastal roads affords a view of a landscape of sheer cliffs, only interrupted by spectacular beaches, pretty fishing ports and towns bursting with flavor.

Together with its coastline, Euskadi’s green countryside and mountains are an ideal place to enjoy nature and take a break from frenetic urban life. A labyrinth of mountains and deep valleys hold towns full of tradition and a plentiful supply of rural accommodation and activities.

However, if anything captures this diversity and this contrast, it is gastronomy, the true unifying bond of our land, a luxury affordable to everybody in all corners of the Basque Country. From its traditional cooking, handed down through generations and based on locally-grown produce, to the most vanguard and signature cuisine, internationally renowned as proven by the 26 Michelin stars awarded to its restaurants.

And how better to accompany this great cuisine than with one of the great wines from Rioja Alavesa region, a large plain populated with red grape vineyards and stately wineries that have raised Alava Rioja wine to the category of an art, or with txakoli, a unique white wine found only in Euskadi, or with natural cider made using traditional methods.

There is so much to savor in Euskadi. Basque Country savour it.

Euskadi (Pays Basque) et ses trois territoires historiques, le Gipuzkoa, la Biscaye et l’Alava, forment un univers de diversité, un contraste palpable dans ses trois capitales modernes et cosmopolites, qui ont su se transformer et s’adapter aux temps nouveaux sans perdre leur personnalité. Trois parties d’un tout, complémentaires entre elles, avec une grande offre culturelle, gastronomique et commerciale dans un environnement urbain agréable et humain.

Toutefois, la singularité de cette terre ne saurait être comprise sans le Golfe de Gascogne qui a dessiné à sa guise la géographie d’Euskadi et a forgé la personnalité de ses habitants. Sillonner les routes de la côte nous permet de contempler un paysage de falaises escarpées, interrompues uniquement par des plages magnifiques, des ports de pêche charmants et des villages pleins de saveur.

Près de la côte, nous découvrons une Euskadi verte et montagneuse, idéale pour profiter de la nature et échapper au quotidien trépidant. Un labyrinthe de forêts et de vallées abruptes parsemées de villages traditionnels avec une offre intéressante de tourisme rural et actif.

Mais si cette diversité et ce contraste se traduisent dans la réalité, c’est bien par la gastronomie, le véritable trait d’union de notre terre, un luxe à la portée de tous aux quatre coins du Pays Basque. De sa cuisine traditionnelle, transmise de génération en génération et basée sur les produits de la terre, à la cuisine d’avant-garde et d’auteur, de renommée internationale comme l’attestent les 26 étoiles Michelin de ses restaurants.

Et pour accompagner cette excellente cuisine, rien de tel que les grands crus de la Rioja Alavesa, une immense plaine peuplée de vignobles rouges et de caves majestueuses, qui ont élevé le vin alavais à la catégorie d’art ou le txakoli, un vin exceptionnel que l’on trouve uniquement en Euskadi, ou encore du cidre naturel élaboré selon les pratiques traditionnelles.
