Dynamic range

TI 2 and TI 8 beam : From one pilot to 4 trains of 72 bunches

5 109 (pilot) to 4.9 1013 p/extraction (ultimate)

Slow extracted beam

CNGS : 2 extractions of 10.5 s in a 6s cycle2.4 1012 p (SU) to 3.5 1013 p/extraction (ultimate)

Beam Position monitors

Precision required :+/- 0.1 mm

BPM radius 30 mm

Within 20 mm : precision : 0.3% --> +/- 0.1 mmOutside : precision : 1% --> 0.3 mm

resolution : 1 per mil --> 0.03 mm

Select : all bunches individually (same electronics as LHC)2 processes running in parallel (one accumulating the average data, one for a particular bunch or all bunches individually).+CNGS : beam angle accuracy : 0.1 mrad

Intensity measurementsBeam current transformers : Very good absolute precision difficult

Relative 1 %

Intensity measurements possible with BPM if both X and Y axesequipped :+/- 1% precision in radius of 15 mm+/- 2 % in radius of 20 mm

Also

Some BPMs will be equipped in both planesInteresting tool to check the intensity along the line, where losses might occur

Equip the line with both BCT and few X/Y BPMs

Beam loss monitors

Ionization Chamber :

30 BLMs in each TI18 in TT41

Sensitivity/resolution ~3000 e- /primary chargesVery broad dynamic range (0.1% of pilot/ultimate)

If more required : one selected bunch, a selected train, ------> need to equip screen with PM or electronic shutter

Profile measurements : Optics checksEmittance measurements

Precision:

Measure the emittance taking these precisions into account (+ error on Twiss)

Measure pilot, integrate a whole batch.

Others : Gaussian beam

Non-Gaussian: rms with better precision

Selection:

Pilot (Alumina screen) ~ 5%

~ 4%

Extraction LSS4 and LSS6

- OTR : Use of OTR being investigated

- BLM:

Special BPM in front of septum magnet

Aperture radius : 100 …110 mmrequired precision & linearity : 100 … 200 mover 50 % of aperture, i.e. 0.1 … 0.2 %------> factor 20 ….

- BPM :

Important for setting up (low intensity),for post mortem for the extracted beam,for interlocking to beam dump for circulating beam(bad bumper setting or septum position).
