Chris was a founder member of Redbridge Pensioners’ Forum, and in 2009 was awarded an MBE “for service to older people in Greater London.” In particular, Chris encouraged Redbridge Council to develop its Lifeline service for vulnerable and elderly people. In the words of John Coombes, who became Chair of the Pensioners’ Forum after Chris took on the role of President, “he should be best remembered for his work on the Lifeline, he fought long and hard to get these for the elderly, and many lives have been saved thanks to him.”Chris remained active until late in life. In 2008, for example, he joined the Development Group for what became Redbridge LiNK, which evolved into Healthwatch. It was only in 2012 that he decided to step down from the Healthwatch Board. Cathy Turland, Redbridge Healthwatch’s Chief Executive, has written that Chris “was knowledgeable, not only about the area but also about the current issues affecting people and would always focus on positive approaches to dealing with the challenges we faced.”RedbridgeCVS staff also paid tribute to Chris’s involvement in the local community, such as his regular attendance at the Redbridge Voluntary Sector Network, until his health made this impossible. Ross Diamond, Chief Executive of RedbridgeCVS, commented that “we’d like to send our condolences to those close to Chris. He was a hugely valued member of the local community and had been a major influence in the local voluntary sector. His involvement changed the world for the better, and we all feel privileged to have known him.”

Redbridge MS Society Says Thanks to VolunteersThe picture on the right, which the MS Society shared with their 429 followers on Twitter, shows their volunteers at a BBQ on Friday 23 September. As the MS Society say, “Good food, Good company, Good weather..what more could you ask for on a Friday afternoon?!”More and more local groups are using social media like Facebook and Twitter to get publicity for free. Lots of information is available to help you get started – look online, come on our training course next May, and you may even find magazines about Twitter in your local supermarket!

Play Park OpensBenton Play Park in Seven Kings opened on 15 September. iThe Park ncludes a floodlit multi-use games area, outdoor gym, play space and car park as well as plants, trees and wildlife-friendly landscaping. The project cost almost £300,000 and funders included Redbridge Council, Vision Redbridge and Sport England. The park provides a place for children to play in an area which lacked spaces where they could do so safely. Congratulations to Roger Backhouse and the other trustees!

Healthwatch Calls on Council to Make Plan AccessibleThe Redbridge Plan is an important and controversial document which sets out plans for the provision of new homes around the borough. Cathy Turland of Healthwatch Redbridge has pointed out that this long and complex document, which runs to 184 pages, isn’t accessible to many local people – such as anyone with learning difficulties or those who have English as a second language. Cathy suggested that information could be made available in different areas about plans for that area, in different formats such as posters. Healthwatch produces many materials in “easy-read” format, and have found that they are popular with a wide range of people.
