NSW PSSA Rugby League Classic Shield Knockout and ‘Legends of League’ ReportOn Thursday, 19 June, our Senior Rugby League team will be travelling to Lennox Head to play rugby league against Lennox Head in the 4th round of the NSW PSSA Rugby League Classic Shield Knockout.

Our team has been training very well and playing great rugby league of late. The team will be travelling to Lennox Head by bus and will leave Tweed Heads South Public School at 9.00am. The team will return back at school at approximately 2.15pm.

We know that the game against Lennox Head will be a tough encounter. We are looking forward to the clash. We won last year against Lennox Head on our turf in the 4th round and the boys will need to stay focused if they are to win away from home.

The team looked very impressive winning two of the three games that they played on Wednesday, 11 June at South Tweed Ovals in the ‘Legends of League’ Gala Day contest. The boys were strong in attack and punishing in defence. Noah played very well and made sure that the other players stayed in their positions on the field. Nathaniel played very well his first game and has cemented his spot in the team.

Tweed Heads South Public School also sent our Junior Rugby League team to the ‘Legends of League’ Gala Day and the boys did not let their followers down. They were in devastating form on the day under the guidance and expert coaching of Mr and Mrs Hicks. The team played four games and crushed their opposition in all four games. Bayden was the best and fairest player in our team and led his team well while Shayden continues to score numerous tries each time he plays. Shane scored an excellent try running 50 metres through the centre of the field. He was strong in attack and defence.

All of the players were very well behaved as usual and had a great day representing Tweed Heads South Public School playing rugby league to the best of their ability.

Mike Donnelly and his colleagues from the ARL organised the carnival and did a great job. The referees and medical staff were very efficient.

The canteen staff of South Tweed’s Juniors Rugby League Club also did an excellent job supplying enough food and drinks for everyone. The groundsmen kept the fields in great order during the day.

Our boys are beginning to use the rugby league skills that they have practised and mastered in training. Great work boys! These players have been playing together for a while now and are putting their combinations together. Many thanks to Mr Taylor and Mr Nicholls for giving up their time to train the boys at school leading up to rugby league commitments.

Preschool NewsWhich tree has the biggest girth?

This is the question that preschool investigated last week. We learnt that when we measure a trees, ‘girth’, we are talking about how thick or ‘round’ the tree trunk is. We used our bodies to measure the girth of the trees in the playground. The tree with the biggest girth was 8 children.

Yoga Fun

We enjoyed our second and final Yoga session with Miss Jo last week. Some of us were so relaxed during relaxation time that we fell asleep!

Healthy Harold

We are looking forward to our visit to Healthy Harold this week! We have been reading the big book ‘The Magic Lunch Box’ during language time and we can’t wait to tell Healthy Harold everything we know about packing a healthy lunch box.

Tweed Heads SouthSoccer StarsOn Tuesday, 10 June, 28 students represented Tweed Heads South Public School at Arkinstall Park for the PSSA Soccer Gala Day.

All students played their best demonstrating teamwork and sportsmanship. Unfortunately the boy’s team were defeated in both games by Cudgen and Centaur Public Schools and the girl’s team achieved one win and one loss to Banora Point.

Well done to all students’ involved. A great effort!

Life EducationThat wonderful character Happy Healthy Harold is on his way to Tweed Heads South. Along with his helper Nicole, Healthy Harold will be here to deliver his message about staying safe and being healthy.

The Life Education Van will be at school from Monday, 16 June to Friday, 19 June will programs to teach our students about safe living. These programs are the followed up with a series of lessons in the classroom that complement our Personal Development and Health programs. It is especially important that all students attend the Life Education van. A permission note with all the details about the visit was sent home on Tuesday. Spare copies available from the office.

Marcelle Bernard Practise practice! That was just one of the many messages that Marcelle Bernard delivered to the students to help them to overcome their fears of public speaking.

In an energetic, enthusiastic and engaging performance, Marcelle took the students on a journey to demonstrate the skills of speaking in public. Marcelle had many anecdotes from being very nervous to talk in public as a child to now making a living out of speaking in public. The students responded well and were enthralled for the entire performance. They left feeling inspired for when it is their time to speak in public.

Future LearnersAs the teacher librarian my focus is well stated in the following quote from the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians, December 2008: “All young Australians will become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.”http://www.curriculum.edu.au/verve/_resources/National_Declaration_on_the_Educational_Goals_for_Young_Australians.Teacher librarians actively engage in leading and demonstrating the use and application of action research to secure data to inform decision making for the future development of our school learning community.

Being a teacher librarian and managing the library involves:• Asking questions and recommending future actions• The school library adds value to the teaching and learning program of the school.• School library programs improve student achievement and learning outcomes.• Teacher librarians embrace new models for interacting with learners using 21st century technology.• Teacher librarians deliver inclusive, whole school digital literacy programs

As we introduce and use more technology, Teacher librarians:• Provide equity of access to a range of digital resources and technologies.• Demonstrate expertise in using technologies for information creation, storage, retrieval, dissemination, organisation and communication.• Respect and adhere to guidelines and laws for intellectual property and fair use of information in a school setting.• Model the attributes of a responsible digital citizen.• Support teacher colleagues in exploring creative and innovative ways to use technologies to develop new ways of teaching and learning, and• Use technologies to support problem solving and creative thinking by encouraging colleagues to set assignments that advance students’ skills in using technologies to access information and to create and design products that demonstrate the students’ understanding of the content.
