The Cadet Scholarship has given me the opportunity to see what real engineers do every day and I have not even started my freshman year of college yet. It's really great!” Alex will join previous Cadet Scholarship recipients, Missy Bernard and Conor Hoey at Worchester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) this fall, majoring in Electrical Engineering. As a part of the scholarship program, Alex has had the opportunity to shadow a variety of people at HG&E, but a great deal of his time has been spent working directly with electrical engineer, Luai Elamir. “Currently, I am working on a transformer storage project and learning about all aspects of HG&E's business,” Alex said. “I always knew HG&E provided Holyoke's heat and electricity, but I didn't realize how many other things were going on here. I was especially impressed by the hydroelectric operation.” Alex has always had an affinity for math, from his days in Sr. Susan's class at Blessed Sacrament School, to his calculus class at Holyoke High School (HHS). He's always had a love for science, especially enjoying Mr. Benoit's Physics II class at HHS, which is the class that piqued his interest in electrical engineering. Alex explained that Mr. Benoit really went above and beyond to make things interesting for the students, which helped him to choose a career path. It's not all about math and science for Alex though. He's an avid golfer in his spare time, getting out to Wyckoff Country Club as often as possible after work. He loves to travel, and is looking to join the study abroad program at WPI when he becomes eligible. He was the voice behind the HHS football team's live tweets, and a member of the HHS Herald staff. We are excited to see what's in store for Alex in the future! The Cornelius J. COMMUNITY CORNER

HG&E Around HolyokeMeet Your Serviceman: Gavin O’Hara

A long way from his childhood home in

Ballaghaderreen, Ireland, Gavin O'Hara

moved to the United States on 2000.

After working in a few different

industries in Western Massachusetts,

Gavin began a plumbing apprenticeship.

“One day I was working in Galway and a

friend came by and asked if I'd like to

move to the US with him,” said Gavin.

“That's how it started, from there he

planned the whole trip, we landed in

Springfield and began working for a

roofing company.”

Gavin explained how different it is growing up in Ireland, many young people move away.

Settling down in the Holyoke/Springfield area seemed natural, as there are many families in

Western Massachusetts with ties back to Ireland.

Gavin worked at a few local establishments, which provided him an opportunity to meet

many people. He was introduced to plumbing and gas fitting, which he found interesting so

he began an apprenticeship at a company in Agawam.

For many years, Gavin applied to be a serviceman at HG&E and was elated when he was

hired in 2014. He really loves the job and is able to bring a unique skillset in plumbing,

which allows him to work on a variety of interesting projects.

“Before working here, I worked alone,” said Gavin. “Working as part of a team is great and I

really like all the guys.”

Gavin lives in Holyoke with his wife and three children.
