SLAM IT DOwN…

CELEBRATING wOMANHOOD

By Nirja Vasavada

Recently I came across a performance on social media by a young girl

called AranyaJohar. The performance was called “A Brown Girl’s Guide to Beauty”, presented by Shaadi.com and Unerased Poetry. The melodious guitar strings with which it started, gave a soothing feeling. Performance, however, was anything but soothing. It was meant to upset, disturb and unnerve you; and that’s exactly what it did. It was a slam poetry performance.

A new form of Spoken Word Poetry, Slam poetry is a rising phenomenon these days. A combination of anger, emotion,

expression and performance; slam poetry is one of the most vigorous ways to convey your message to the audience. No wonder then, that it is the most

powerful medium to voice social issues. Interestingly slam poetry has also become a medium of social advertising. The above-mentioned

performance is about the stereotypes that the society has generated about beauty for women – fair skin tone, thin body, long hair and so on. And the main purpose of having this ‘beauty’ is to get married to a ‘suitable groom’. When these stereotypes are slammed down by an online match-making site, it not only becomes their marketing but also their contribution in challenging the social issues that have been around for ages.

The most interesting part in slam poetry is the pace with which the words are woven in perfect rhyme and performed. It feels as if there is a race between mind, heart and body, where the

mind is weaving words, the heart is pouring emotions and the body is bringing this whole concoction of words and emotions into an enthralling performance on the stage. It’s an absolutely unabashed attack on the society. That’s where its power lies – in its brutal honesty.

You need not be a “literature person” to appreciate a slam poetry performance. If you have not watched it yet, just youtube some of the performances and it will leave you shaken.

Festivals in India are an integral part of people’s life. They portray the rich

cultural heritage of the country. Festivals bring a kind of enthusiasm in the routine monotonous life.

“Man is a social animal.” This sentence itself indicates how male oriented our society is! But surprisingly in this male dominated society Navratri is

the festival which celebrates the power of womanhood! It is the festival of nine nights celebrating the female force in the world. It is one of the most important festivals of India marked with much pageantry.

There are different stories woven around this festival. As per the tale in ancient scriptures, when the world was tortured by a mighty vicious demon known as Mahishasura and even the Gods could not defeat him, they all combined their energies and the mighty warrior Goddess Durga was born. The Goddess engaged the demon in battle and killed many of his comrades, like Chanda and Muna, and also came to be known as

Chamundeshwari. For nine days, the gruesome battle continued between the pious Goddess and the vicious Demon, however, on the tenth day, the Goddess subdued the ravaging beast and killed him. This sacred day is celebrated as Vijayadashmi. According to the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama along with his brother Laxman, trusted aid Hanuman and the army of monkeys, attacked the demon king and the great battle continued for tenth day. On the tenth da, the Lord killed the ten headed demon Ravana and rescued his wife. Since then Dushera is believed to be celebrated on that day till date. The word Dushera in itself can

be construed as Dasa Hara, which means cutting ten heads of the demon Ravana. Therefore the festival is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. Navratri highlights the principles elucidated by the Ramayana.

Navratri is said to be India’s longest festival of dance. It is a celebration where people spend nine nights worshipping Goddess Durga, dancing, singing and most importantly dressing up with the beautiful traditional outfits! It is celebrated all over India. Especially Gujrat is very famous for it’s “Raas” and “Garba”.

If we look at the spiritual

aspect of this festival, it is about worshipping the woman power. A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture, transform and destroy! Navratri is puja of “SHAKTI”.Whenever an evil element takes birth on this earth, the power of woman plays a major role to destroy the evil.

In today’s world if we really want to worship different forms of Goddesses, we should learn to give respect to different roles of womanhood, which play a very important part on different stages of our life. The society where a girl child is killed before she’s born, where there have to be campaigns like “Beti Bachao”, the celebration of Navaratri becomes futile. Scientifically we may have progressed, but when these inventions are used for such a shameful purpose, that takes us centuries back. Women are not respected, and it is the most vulnerable part of our society.

True celebration of Navratri will take place when our society willstart giving due rights and respect to all women, when it willaccept and appreciate the real woman power in the real Goddesses living around us.

COMMUNICATE, CONNECT, CONqUER…By Nirja Vasavada

The cases of suicides amongst teenagers have reached a scary level.

Almost every day we read in the newspapers about children, teenagers committing suicide – whether under the influence of the Blue Whale or for a petty reason like failing in board exams. We also hear it at almost all the ‘chai pechurcha’ discussions that “this generation doesn’t understand the value of life.” So can we get away with it? Just calling it a generational problem is not going to bring any solution. What, then, is the solution?

I strongly believe that the solution lies in communication. If we are able to communicate well with our children, that creates an environment of warmth which eventually leads to the feelings of friendship and security. The suicide ratio is increasing mainly because the youth today is vulnerable and prone to fall for the depression trap. The Blue Whale game creators identified this weak nerve and as we know, more and more children are falling prey to this vicious circle.

What is scarier is the fact that this is not restricted to one city, one state or one nation; but it has become a global concern.

Should we, then, turn to make them watch the Rajshree ‘Sanskaar’ movies instead of social media? We need to understand that if our children are moving ahead, we would have to move ahead with them. So if they are there on social media, the parent would also have to be on social media – not to keep watch over them, but to be with them, to be their friends, to provide them the same warmth and security that you would at home. The best way to curb depression is to make people feel your presence in their world, while giving them their space. It might be tricky for some of us, but hey, who said communication is easy!

Lipstick Under My BurkhaDirector: Alankrita ShrivastavaWriter: Alankrita ShrivastavaStars: Ratna Pathak, Plabita Borthakur, Konkana Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra

Reviewed By Nitin Pillai

We are not ready. As a nation, we are ill-prepared to view

Alankrita Shrivastava’s creation about the lives of four women in the sleepy town of Bhopal, which is not mainstream. The plot echoes the routines of a 55 year old widow, a college student, a housewife and a soon to be bride, however the routine is only limited to the introduction of these characters. Ten minutes into the movie we are introduced to an aspect, which made many cinegoers cringe, snigger, laugh and taunt.

T h e d i r e c t o r unapologetically portrays the forced duality that these women are arm twisted into. While the matriarch-Usha Parmar (Ratna Pathak), respected and feared by all, finds solace in erotic pulp fiction; the college going Rehana Abidi (Plabita Borthakur) sneaks out to sing

Miley Cyrus tunes and steals in order to fit in with her college mates. Shireen Aslam (Konkana Sen Sharma) must hide from her dominating husband that fact that she is the star sales girl for her company because he prefers her to be at home to take care of their 3 boys. Leela (Aahana Kumra) would prefer to travel the world with her boyfriend rather than being tied down in marriage for social

stability and acceptability. The leading ladies of the

movie, without any theatrics, guide you into a world were women are suppressed, their desires ridiculed and thwarted. Usha’s liking for her swimming instructor is condemned and she is chastised by the same people who live off of her, Rehana’s passion for singing and her desire to fit in with the college crowd is censured by her

parents and her so-called friends. Shireen is assaulted by her husband when she confronts him with his infidelity and Leela’s engagement is broken off by her finance as he gets to know of her past. All women, are condemned by society for what they wished, rather than what they did. The movie claims that had this been done by the men, most of them would be allowed, applauded or even

encouraged to do so. However, the regressive mindset that still prevails shackles women into doing or dreaming anything which doesnot fit the society’s mould.

The brilliance of cinematography is evident in the binary sets. Most of the scenes where suppression occurs are based in small, confined rooms (rooms of the housing colony, narrow staircases, and store rooms) which adds to the claustrophobia. Whereas the scenes of liberation are shot in open spaces such as the swimming pool, parking lot and foyers of the housing colony.

Lipstick Under My Burkha is bold, honest and audacious. Unfortunately it is not for everyone. Most of us will squirm in our seats or turn the other way as the move plays out reality, we may get over our awkwardness and may start guffawing at what is happening by ridiculing the story line primarily because we have not matured up for such a movie. We are not ready for Lipstick Under My Burkha, and it is shameful that we are not ready, yet.

GENDER SENSITIzATION wORkSHOPS CONDUCTED BY SAUHARD AND wDC, GLSU

“Can you wear whatever you wish, whenever you

wish, without fearing anyone?” was the question asked by the young fellows of Sauhard to some of our students. The question sounds quite simple, and as expected most girls answered negatively while most boys answered positively. The next question was specifically to boys who answered positively: “so can you wear a skirt in a party without any fear or hesitation?” There was no answer, there was only laughter. This was a question that nobody had ever thought of. In the next ten minutes there were a number of questions asked, like “Have you seen a female coolie, a male nanny or a female truck driver?” Most answers to these questions were in negative. This was at an experimental workshop by Sauhard fellows Rajvi Parmar and Bhavi Barad at Faculty of Business Administration (NRBBA).

Following this workshop GLS University’s Women’s Development Cell in collaboration with Sauhard initiated these gender

sensitization workshops at all the institutes affiliated to GLS University, and received an overwhelming response from students as Faculty of

Management, Faculty of Computer Application and IT, Faculty of Commerce conducted these sessions.

The workshop was divided

into three parts: Youth Parliament, Debate and Role Play. The main idea behind keeping this workshop was to make students think and

question the stereotypes related to gender prevail in our society. More than 250 students across GLS University benefited from this workshop.
