The Oldsletter has a new look because this editor could no longer use the outdated application our new printer needs. Fortunately member Scot Taylor made InDesign available so we could go on with the Oldsletter. Right now I’m on a learning curve but we should be able to do special things to come. Our new webmaster, Lynn Kissel has compatible equipment and some day in the future we may be able to make this Olds-letter available to those who would want it electronic over the web. Could I get a show of hands? On your next application (2009) we will have a box to check so we have a good idea of who wants an electronic color version. No promises yet, but we’ll see.If you have not already, take a look at our new website. Lynn has a write up on page 4 Larry Ewing, Editor/Librarian

President’s MessageHi EveryoneHere is the update on our progress of preparing a proposal to host the 2011 Nationals. We have selected Circus Circus Reno, Nevada and a proposal was presented at this years Nationals by Joe Varley, but was not selected. The OCA board needed more in-formation on the host hotel to make sure that it would meet all the requirements. Our proposalcommitteeplanstocontinuetoget/fillintheneededinformationpertheOCAguidebook. The 2011 National Hosting Club will be selected at next years Nationals.

July 5th, 2008 Treasurer Report By Jeanie Marsden

As of this date, we have $15,985.05 in our Treasury. We only made $495.25 from the swap meet, Partly due to an endeavor to advertise in the Crui-sin’ News magazine, which cost us $420.00. Lessons learned! Our T-Shirt campaign has been very successful. We have sold 150 so far and have plenty to use for the next years’ car shows. ZoneShow--So-Calissplittingtheprofits,checkreceivedof$595.81fromthezoneshowandwemade$101.50fromthe50/50raffle.Expensesfortrophiesare$462.78whichbringsourtotalprofitto$234.53.Our President had expenses of $110.85, for generating and mailing a survey to the membership about the 2011 Nationals meet. Last newsletter expenses, $294.17. *We voted to give Spo Orloff $300- for his hard work on the website as a parting gift.

The NorCal Olds Website Has a New Look! By Lynn KisselHave you visited the NorCal Olds Club website recently? It would be better if you reported that we should make a change to the“MembersCars”page,changingthedescriptionforyour“1912Hupmobile”toa“1912Oldsmobile”.The website is divided into public (open to the world) and private (NorCal Olds club members, only) content. At the moment, the only private content is back issues of the Oldsletter, and only the most recent issue is available. In the fullness of time, the webmasters plan to get electronic copies of all back issues of the Oldsletter available to club members.Access to the private content is controlled by a common username (‘ncoc’) and password (‘rocket 88’). It’s anticipated that we’ll change the password yearly and publish it in the Olds-letter.Also as time permits, we hope to generate a complete list of *ALL* (or as many as we can remember or reconstruct) events of the club, clear back to its founding days in 1975. A note from our Pacific Southwest Zone Directors Following is a review of the highlights of the recent Board Meeting at the National Meet in Dearborn, MI on July 30th. Please publish this in your next newsletter. The board meeting went smoothly this year, and lasted approximately 8 hours. We received reports from the 2009 and 2010 National Meet host chapter committees. The Pennsylvania group for 2009 at Seven Springs resort has some details to iron out, but are well ontheirwaytohavingplansfinalized.TheMassachusettsgroupforthe2010MeetatStur-bridge, MA seems to have nearly all details completed at this time. We need to know the name and contact information for each chapter for the member who over-sees the chapter roster and OCA compliance list. This will make it much simpler for the OCA Vice President to complete his compliance report later this year. In the future if this contact information changes, please notify the OCA Vice President of the change to eliminate delays. Please have this information to us by the end of August. The Young Drivers Program has been eliminated due to lack of participation. Those who are currently enrolled in the program will be continued as long as they abide by the requirements of the program. A new OCA membership Directory has been published and is available only on CD. It is pass-word protected, so please note this when you receive your copy. Details on purchasing one will be in a future JWO. They will cost $ 5.00, plus any applicable postage. In order to encourage more chapters to bid to host a National Meet, the board has voted to give the chosen chapter a $5,000.00 one time payment to support the efforts of the chapter (this does NOT have to be repaid). This is to encourage chapters who may have a small treasury to bid on the Meet, and to discourage chapters from padding the cost of hotel rooms or activities. Higher hotel and activity prices discourage members from attending the Meet. In the past, chapters receiveda$4,000.00“seedmoney”checkwhichwastoberepaidbeforetheMeetstarted.Thisand other details concerning the National Meet will appear in JWO in the fall. Sincerely,Joe&GloriaVarley,PacificSouthwestZoneDirectorsOldsmobile Club of America

Minutes of meeting, June 29, 2008President Dan Haggerty, called the meeting to order about 1 P.M. in Larkey Park in WalnutCreek.AllofficerswerepresentexceptforJeffStanishandLindaSutherland.Wealsohad one of our new members there, Rick Razos with his 1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

As there were no meetings since March, there were no minutes to read.

Treasurer Jeanie Marsden stated that the current balance is $16,050.52. We only made $495.25 from the swap meet, due to advertising in Cruisin’ News, which cost us $420. There were no ap-preciablebenefitsfromthat,sowillnotdothatagain.

She also stated that we have 19 new members since January. We have 198 paid members and are in compliance with the OCA requirements. The new members each received a T-shirt.

Ken Van Gundy reported that the Micke Grove car show is set for October 12. Please remember that there is a $5 charge when you enter the park, which is not part of the car show fee.

Larry reported that when he took the July/August issue to be printed, he found that the print shop (which he has been using for some years) was closed up and out of business. He then went looking for another shop and found one, which is charging less than the previous place. And they do satisfactory work. .

Lynn Kissel is our new webmaster. He will be doing a little adjusting and is hopeful that more members will check the web page more often. He suggested e-mailing the newsletter to those members who have e-mail. This was discussed and it was agreed that we would continue to mail the newsletters as our members seem to prefer that.

Lynn also asked how to contact the Historian so he can get some background for the changes he isthinkingofmakingonthewebpagetomakeitmoreinterestingtonewpeople.BobGriffith, who is the historian, has been transferred by his company to 1000 Oaks, but said he will continue to be the historian. It was suggested that we give him a nice thank you in our next newsletter. Lynn said he would contact Bob directly for some historical information.

Larry suggested that the club might want to reimburse Spo (Steve Orloff) for his expenses in es-tablishing and keeping the web page running for the eight years he took care of it. Larry advised that Spo had spent about $600 on behalf of our club. A motion was made, seconded and carried that a check for $300 be mailed to Spo with a thank-you note for all his work on our behalf. Jeanie will take care of this.

Carmen stated that no one had heard from the MacTavishes or George Ledger about coming to our meeting today. She also said that the date to visit Lyle Burgess’ shop has been set for Octo-ber 18. She will send a note to Larry with more details for the newsletter.

New business: Larry discussed the feasibility of putting the newsletter on our website, with a password so that only our members would be able to access it. Lyle stated that he can make a members only area on the website. Since only half of our members have e-mail, it was decided

to continue mailing the newsletter. Also, the idea of having a password to get to the minutes was not well received. Larry said that the calendar of events and additional information are on the webpage. Lynn has his own website, so there will be no cost to our club for the present, but there will be a fee for the website at some point. Lynn said that we need some way to contact theofficersonthewebsite, butafterdiscussingitfurther, itwasagreednottodothis.JeanieMarsden, as membership chair, is listed with her name, address, phone number and e-mail. Micke Grove – Carmen said if she is given the number of people attending by October 1, she will buy the meat, buns, and charcoal for the cookout. People with names from A to K will bring salads and from L to Z will bring desserts.

Old business: National Meet in 2011:Dan reported that the hotels in the Bay Area are too expensive – most want about $200 per night. He checked in the San Jose/Santa Clara area because of the Great America attraction, as well as a central location to all parts of California. He has now contacted Reno-Tahoe areas. He said that Circus/Circus in Reno was interested. Their rooms run $79 to $99 per night, they have a ca-sino, bars, restaurants, etc. They would offer 50,000 feet for a swap meet space and parking for 500cars,whichwouldbethetwotopfloorsoftheirparkinggarage.Thissoundedinteresting.

Kenny mentioned that Reno used to have a chapter, but it is now defunct. The swap meet is 100%profittoOCA,andalltherestisprofittoourchapter.Also,Circus/Circuswillrebate$5per room to our club.Diane reported that Dave Kennedy had contacted the casino people in the Roseville area who are planning to build a hotel in the next three years to ask about space, cost, etc. However, he had not heard back from them prior to our meeting. Dan said he wasn’t in favor of waiting to see if the hotel would be built, that we need to present our program to the OCA at the upcoming Na-tional Meet in Dearborn in July. John Wallin suggested staying in Jackson – he will get informa-tion and forward it to Dan. Allan Marsden will contact the National Motor Museum (formerly Harrah’s) and see what they will offer in the way of a tour. Dan will check on some other rooms and facilities and report back at our next meeting.Jeanie moved that we accept Circus/Circus for the National in 2011, seconded by Larry, and carried. So far, our proposal is the only one being submitted to OCA. The question of security for the cars was raised, it will be looked into. The buffet at Circus/Circus runs about $24 to $35 per person.

Regarding merchandise to sell, there will be the T-shirts as well as additional items. We have access to a management team, but they would have to be paid, which would mean an extra $7 additional for room and parking for each person to cover the cost. The Varleys, our zone direc-tors,willgototheNationaltopresenttheprogram.JeaniesuggestedvotingDaninofficeagainin 2010 so he can continue working on this project.

Larry reported that the club trailer was sold last month for $268. It was picked up by the buyer, soitisfinallyoffourhandsandoffofJackTognotti’sproperty.

The 16 members present had brought their own lunches and we all enjoyed the sunshine and peaceful atmosphere of the park. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 P.M.Respectfully submitted, Diane Kauffman, Secretary

On 26-28 June I was able to attend the Hurst/Olds Club of America’s(H/OCA) National meeting in Flagstaff, AZ with my 1969 Hurst/Olds and son Sean. Afterowningandrestoringmy69H/OsinceMarch1980,Imadethebigpushtofinishit to make this national meet. This is the furthest west this national meet has been held, the next furthest meet prior was in Missouri and I wasn’t going to miss this one for sure. I rented a Penske truck and trailer as I don’t own any tow equipment and couldn’t cost justify buying any. My wife Sherie was having breathing problems and the doctor rec-ommended she not go to a high elevation, so Sean and I made this a father/ son adven-ture trip. I loaded the 69 H/O on the trailer with Sean’s help, threw our suitcases in the back and we were off on 25 June. I kept close to the 55 mph speed limit for trailers and stopped at Barstow, CA to and from Flagstaff to break up the driving. We got to the host hotel, Little America 26 June just as the H/OCA president Calvin Badgley with his 1 of 100 made 1974 H/O Delta 88 Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car was checking in. There we hooked up with Dennis Baker from Clovis, CA driving Gerald and Carmen Nickels 72 H/O, and Grant Warner from the SO CAL chapter in his 83 H/O.

Here on the show field are more Hurst conversions, ‘69 to ‘74

On 27 June the club arranged a train trip from Williams, AZ to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We had a whole train car to ourselves and it was great, got to visit with a lot of folks I’ve only met my E mail. We spend the morning and early after-noon looking around the South Rim. I’d never been there before, quite a sight. Quite a number of families came, Paul Panczuk drove his 69 H/O all the way from Indiana with his wife and two small kids, at least they had air conditioning. After the train trip we had a welcome party and the annual H/OCA club meeting back at the hotel.

On 28 June the club held a car show in the parking lot of the host hotel. Surprisingly, considering the value and rarity of these cars, the H/OCA does not do a judged show, it’s a drivers club!! The overall show was small compared to the ones back in the Midwest, but a great turnout of early H/Os: Six 68s, Five 69s and three 72s!! Other interesting ones were a 75 H/O with 1800 mi, yes one thousand eight hundred origi-nalmilesandtheonly68H/Owithanoriginalwhiteinterior.ThiswasthefirsttimeIshowedmy69H/OandthefirsttimeIshowedacaratanH/OCAnationals.Ihavebeen a member of the H/OCA since October 1983 and quite a few members were won-deringifthey’deverseemycarfinishedbeforetheydied.Actually,Iwaswonderingthat about myself as well. Sean was quite a trooper, he helped with the logistics and didn’t complain. He knew topullouttherampsatthehotelwithoutmetellinghim,etc.TheStanish“Boys”hadarrived. He was, however, disappointed that the show on Saturday didn’t have judging. I guess he was planning on taking home a big award. What a great trip and I was sure glad I was able to make this one.
